<p>I wonder what has brought all these people out int the square? Finley Butler tells us: &#8221;It says in a book of my grandmothers called ‘Carlin How - Times Past ‘ that this image is of &#8221;volunteers leaving for Boer war, 1900&#8221;.<br />

<p>Yes the railway bridge as it used to be at Carlin How, do you remember driving under it? I do and if you met a bus coming the other way there was not a lot of room.</p>

<p>Not yet completed Mount Pleasant at Carlin How, but Alan Pearson tells us: &#8221;Mount Pleasant is not on the 1894 Ordnance Survey map, but in the 1911 census no 15 Mount Pleasant is occupied by my great-grandfather Chapman Pearson. There were 13 people living there on census night – and they had a shop there as well!!&#8221;</p>
