The Children’s Bureau, within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, funds the National Foster Care Month initiative each May through a partnership with Child Welfare Information Gateway. You can find out more here.

It’s hard to think of anything more beautiful than a family created or grown through adoption or foster care. Such a wonderful gift for everyone involved. Here’s what the moms had to say regarding local adoptions and foster care. If you’re looking for an adoption support group please see this post.

Foster Care in Memphis

Foster Care

Youth Villages Foster Care
Youth Villages is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to helping emotionally and behaviorally troubled children and their families live successfully. Eighty percent of Youth Villages children have multiple problems, which may include developmental or learning disabilities.

Shelby County Department of Children’s Services

 • I recommend fostering through Shelby County DCS. You will need to complete their training course, known as PATH as well as doing personal interviews and paperwork (home study).
 • We foster through DCS. There is a lot of training, paperwork, etc., but endless opportunities to help out.

1.17 Adoption and Foster Care Support now Memphis Family Connection Center

Camelot
Camelot partners with foster parents to provide loving homes in Tennessee for children in our care.

Omni Visions, Inc.
Every child has a right to be a member of a healthy and supportive family. Children served by Omni Visions are in state custody due to abuse, neglect, unruly or delinquent behaviors, extensive medical issues or significant behavioral and emotional needs. Omni’s primary focus is to support the family in overcoming barriers that prohibit both the child’s development and the ongoing operation of a positive system. Counseling and intervention services are based on an understanding of how each family functions, recognizing that each is unique and may require the services of different professional and para-professionals.

Meritan
Children need adults they can trust. They need, “Someone to choose me!.” And many need medical support, psychological peace and a place to thrive. We aim to protect them from less than a full life, but we cannot achieve our goals alone.

Porter Leath
Porter-Leath was founded as an orphanage, the precursor to foster care, in 1850, so you won’t find a more experienced partner to be there with you and your foster children every step of the way. With over 165 years of experience, we’ve seen it all! As your partner in the foster care journey, Porter-Leath will provide initial funds for necessities, a monthly stipend, 24 hour support, case management, medical support, and continual training on how to best help your foster children. In addition, you and your foster children will enjoy annual celebrations that recognize your commitment to helping youth find a stable, nurturing home.

Adoption Resources

1.17 (My understanding is that 1:17 converted to MFCC. See below.)

Adoption Connection Memphis
One of the oldest social service agencies in Memphis, Adoption Connection is licensed as a child placing agency in Tennessee and Mississippi and has a reputation as a leader in adoption programs locally, statewide and nationally. Adoption Connection offers its services to all individuals regardless of race, religion, or national origin. Part of Jewish Family Service.

 • We were using Jewish Family Service until I got pregnant (go figure). They do a lot of adoptions locally and work with all families (not just Jewish ones). Dont leave them off your short list!
 • Jewish Family Service! WONDERFUL agency that works well with both adoptive parents and birth parents. I adopted my son directly from them and my sister adopted two through an agency in Utah but used them for the home study and tons of advice.
 • We adopted from Adoption Connection. Had a great experience and highly recommend them!

Shelby County Department of Children’s Services
Hundreds of children are under the guardianship of the State of Tennessee. The Department can find them foster homes, group homes, and other residential settings. But children need a permanent home.

Bethany Christian Services
A global nonprofit organization with local offices, caring for orphans and vulnerable children on five continents

 • We adopted through Bethany Christian Services, and are getting reading to go through the process again with DCS.
 • My sister has done two local adoptions, one through Jewish Family Services and one through Bethany.

Agape Child & Family Services
A Christian-based organization which provides children and families with healthy homes in the regional area through community restoration, homeless services, mentoring, foster care, adoption, maternity services and counseling.

Hannah’s Hope
We develop and administer programs designed to promote the welfare of children. Our focus is on assuring that children are able to live with loving parents who offer acceptance and the security of a permanent home.

LifeChoices
Life Choices is committed to providing a non-judgemental and Christ-like environment in order to educate and empower women to make life-affirming decisions. The vision of Life Choices is to strategically change the procurement of abortions by providing intervention, education, and support services for women and families in crisis and by raising awareness in the community as to the obstacles we face and the opportunities available in addressing pro-life issues.

Memphis Family Connection Center

Memphis Family Connection Center
Memphis Family Connection Center provides connection based trauma-informed care to the Shelby County, TN adoptive, foster care and special needs community. Holistic attachment centered counseling, connection based play, occupational therapy, calming techniques, nutrition plans, sensory care, resources, and educational support are all provided through the TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) model.

Ways to give

MattressFirm Foster Donations
You can help local foster kids shine with confidence by bringing your gift of new pants, shirts, sweaters, dresses and more—for boys and girls of all ages—to a Mattress Firm location near you. Or donate online today, and your gift will be used to provide foster children with special services and programs.

Foster Care 2 Success
College-bound foster youth may feel especially alone with no family or community connections, and a history of moving often and attending multiple schools may have left them poorly prepared for college-level work. Our Academic Success Program (ASP) partners the dedication of trained volunteer coaches and the convenience of technology with the resources of our experienced staff to provide encouragement and guidance to students, helping them do well academically and personally.

Together We Rise
Together We Rise is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization comprised of motivated young adults and former foster youth. Our vision is to improve the lives of children in foster care, who often find themselves forgotten and neglected by the public. We collaborate with individuals, companies, and community partners to bring resources to foster youth and use service-learning activities to educate volunteers on issues surrounding the foster care system.

Foster Kids Charity
Foster Kids Charity strives to make sure that every child in the foster care system has their basic, personal needs met. This is accomplished by providing foster children in Texas with basic emergency items: food, clothes, hygienic products, school supplies and more.

Comfort Cases
Every child deserves to know that they matter. When Comfort Cases provides a case to a child in need, we not only offer them new items that they can keep during their journey, we also provide them with dignity and the notion that someone cares about what they are going through.

One Simple Wish
Grant a wish for a kid in foster care. You can browse by kid, location, etc.

Teacher Gift Ideas http://eastmemphismoms.com/teacher-gift-ideas/ http://eastmemphismoms.com/teacher-gift-ideas/#comments Mon, 21 May 2018 02:00:00 +0000 http://174.120.18.194/~suza1386/?p=1329 Ever wonder what teachers really want for gifts from their students? I asked them!

The post Teacher Gift Ideas appeared first on East Memphis Moms.

]]>
Here’s a legacy post from Suzanne from 2016 which I have updated with some of my ideas for 2018:

From Suzanne:

A mom asked for recommendations on teacher gifts. I asked the moms, but then I realized I was asking the wrong people. I have so many friends who are teachers or used to be teachers that I decided to ask them. After all, it’s what the recipient wants that matters, right?

From the teachers:

 • As a teacher, we mostly appreciate gift cards. Even a 5 dollar target or sbux card is great! (Target e-gift card | SBUX e-gift card)
 • As a teacher, I always appreciate ANY gift, but I too tend to get too much food that isn’t good for my waistline….it is constantly in the teachers’ lounge too! I love getting a gift card to Barnes and Noble or even an iTunes gift card!
 • We’re always grateful if you think of us. Especially the often forgotten special area teachers. Trust me, as a teacher, if I’m given something, it will get used somehow.
 • The coolest gift I ever received was a gift card to the mall… so it was good in ALL of their stores. The BEST gift? I’m a huge baseball fan, and one year a family got tickets to the Cardinals game for me. 1st base… field level. Awesome!! ($50 Visa Gift Card)
 • Always appreciated gifts for the classroom… Books for our library, toys/puzzles for indoor recess, magazine subscriptions, etc.
 • As a reading teacher, I like getting grade-appropriate books to add to my classroom library. I also ask the student to write their name and the year on the inside front cover. When students borrow them the next year, they always notice the signature.
 • The best gift that I ever received was a donation made in my honor to an animal sanctuary. (Memphis Humane Society | Alive Rescue Memphis | Sunny Meadows)
 • Gift cards are awesome… Or something I can use in my classroom like stickers, books, special markers, stamps and stamp pads.
 • (and my favorite comment): I liked liquor. But people get mad when I suggest that. Also, long heartfelt notes were awesome.

Here are the top things teachers said they do NOT want.

 • Scented things like lotions and candles. All gifts are appreciated. However, there are some that get re-gifted to others….lotions and candles. Those are such personal preferences.”
 • Plants, mugs, picture frames, magnets, etc. you can only take so many lotions, candles, plants, mugs and picture frames.
 • Candy and Sweets A lot of my colleagues are on diets and food isn’t always the right thing, especially sweets.”

What do teachers want? To sum it up in two words: Gift Cards. If you know what your child’s teacher likes to do in their spare time than go for a store focused on that. Not sure? How about an activity? And what teacher doesn’t need help buying books or other school supplies? If you can only spare $5 it is still appreciated. Or organize the other parents and pool your funds to provide one larger gift from all of you.

Pull out a note card and handwrite a thank you note to the teacher. A personal message thanking them for their efforts is huge. Have younger kids throw in a drawing or note of their own.

Teacher Gifts

Here are some suggestions:

 • Interests/Hobbies. Starbucks, Michael’s/Hobby Lobby, Home Depot/Lowe’s (gardening or home improvement projects), Barnes & Noble or Booksellers, iTunes, Dick’s Sporting Goods/Sports Authority
 • Practical. Target, Knowledge Tree (tons of teacher supplies), Office Depot/Staples, Kroger, Kohl’s, Stein Mart, Oak Court or Wolfchase Mall, TJ Maxx, Kid Station (if they have young children)
 • Activities/OutingsYolo or Sweet CeCe’s, movie theater, spa’s (mani/pedi), restaurants
 • Check the list – a lot of room moms actually have teachers fill out a list at the beginning of the year of their favorite restaurant, treats, drinks, hobbies. Ask your room mom for some suggestions.

More ideas I came up with today:

 • Instead of flowers, a European garden or plant that will last awhile.
 • If the teacher likes chocolate, Whole Foods has some really nice dark chocolate bars that are wrapped in pretty paper
 • If the teacher likes cooking or baking, get high-end ingredients like some nice vanilla extract or unique-shaped pasta or BBQ rub.
 • A case of La Croix
 • Enough with the apples! Unless it’s an Edible Arrangement.
 • Don’t add to the clutter and don’t decorate her home!
