Parents & carers are invited to attend Wellington Shire's first ever Early Years EXPO on Thursday 14th July 2016.

Families with children looking to enrol in kindergarten in 2017 are encouraged to attend to find out about kindergarten enrolment.

With many local businesses on hand with a focus on the health & wellbring of children this event puts a spotlight on the first eight years of life, which is a time of enormous growth & development.

'ThingleToodle and his friend 'Professor E. Speriment' will be attending the Wellington Early Years Expo!
A well-known & much loved part of Victoria's road safety education program, will be engaging children in a 20 minute show starting at 12.30pm where they will learn some key road safety education concepts such as:
- Holding hands with an adult before crossing the road
- Stop! Look! Listen! Think! before crossing the road
- The importance of using child car seats or booster seats correctly

There will be guest speakers talking about kinder readiness & the enrolment process for UnitingCare Gippsland & Sale Combined Kindergartens at 11.00am & 1.00pm.

'FriendShip' Launches

As East Sale Kindergarten celebrates its 60th year of operation from our home here on the RAAF Base & on behalf of the staff, children & families, we welcomed a number of visitors to our centre on Thursday 8th May to celebrate the launch of the 'FriendShip':

Practice Leader Sue Grogan-Williams - UnitingCare Gippsland (our Cluster Manager)
Wing Commander Jim Svede & Chaplain Bruce Grey - East Sale RAAF Base
Ian Riley & Regina Regulska - Fulham Correctional Centre
Phil Ireland & Martin DeWys - Sale Bunnings

Special mention must also go to some others involved in this project who were not at the official launch last week:

Wendy Reeves - who created our flags
Donna Niewenhuys (Sprint Screen Printing) - who added the images to our flags
Col Carmody (Carmody's Tyre Service) - recycled tyre donations for our landscaping around the 'FriendShip'

The dream for a boat here at East Sale Kindergarten for children to explore their fantasies was born by Mrs. Murray. As we all know, Mrs. Murray loves her pirates & she wanted our children to have the opportunity to sail the seven seas of this world any day that they were at East Sale Kindergarten.

This dream was shared a few years ago with me & I thought it would a wonderful addition to our already fantastic outdoor play space. We endeavoured (along with numerous families) to find a second hand boat that could be refurbished & find its place in our playground - but unfortunately we were all unsuccessful.

Not giving up on the dream though, it was right in the spot where the 'FriendShip' now sits, that our idea was shared Ian Riley from the Fulham Correctional Centre & the seed was planted for the construction of the wonderful vessel that stands in our playground today!

We were able to share in the journey of the construction of the 'FriendShip' along the way & the children's excitement built with every image that was shared with us.

Nearing it's completion, it was then that we approached Bunnings here in Sale to assist with the provision of paint to bring the 'FriendShip' to life. We were delighted to hear the Dulux was onboard with our project & the paint was so very kindly donated.

Whilst we chose the colours that were already represented in our outdoor environment, the painted scheme was left solely in the hands of Ian & his crew & we are absolutely thrilled with the outstanding job that they have done. I'm sure everyone would agree too!

The 'FriendShip', once complete was ready to sail it's way into our outdoor environment & it was thanks to the RAAF Base here at East Sale for the use of a forklift & driver that saw that event take place.

Three sections of the 'FriendShip' were carefully manoeuvred into position & with the assistance of some of our kindergarten families, she was bolted together & ready for the children to explore the very next day!

Many adventures onboard the 'FriendShip' have already taken place & we are sure there will be many more to follow. With her flags hoisted, the 'FriendShip' was officially set sail by Mrs. Murray christening her in a showering of glitter (of course!) before all the children did exactly the same & came onboard for a celebration photo!

Thank-you Ian Riley & your crew at the Fulham Correctional Centre - without your inspirational ideas & hard work, this dream would never have come to fruition - the children at East Sale Kindergarten, as they sail the seven seas each day, can't thank you enough!

Nude Food Day

Nude Food Day is on October 16, 2013. It's an initiative in Australia during National Nutrition Week that encourages us all to focus on a healthy body and a healthy planet. Created by Nude Food Movers, in particular it wants us to make our lunches healthy, nutritious and environmentally friendly meals by filling them with fresh food and eliminating all unnecessary wrapping. Nude Food Day is a fantastic opportunity to teach children about how their actions can impact the environment and their health. Focussing on the positive message of ‘nude food = a healthy body + a healthy planet’, we want children at East Sale Kindergarten to be empowered to choose healthy, rubbish free food for their lunches and snacks.

Wild Action Zoo

Look who visited our 4 Year Old Program at East Sale Kindergarten on the last day of Term 3! Dan from Wild Action Zoo!

The children were most impressed watching Dan bring black box after black box into our Kindergarten - "What's in the boxes?", the children kept asking. "You'll have to wait & see!"

Strong Foundations Conference

Today, just after 7am, all the staff at East Sale Kindergarten ventured off to Warragul to attend the annual UnitingCare Gippsland - Strong Foundations In Early Childhood Education Conference.

Attending the conference, was a wonderful opportunity for our staff to network with other professionals & to hear from a wide variety of speakers on a diverse range of topics.

Our MC for the day was Libbi Gorr - ABC Radio - who brought a wonderful candour & humour to the day AND our Morning Guest Speaker was Professor Margaret Sims who spoke about her research interest focussed around quality community-based services for children & families.

Morning Concurrent Sessions were held prior to morning tea - Shirley attended Planning for Resilience with Professor Margaret Sims; Rosanna & Kim attended Music In An Inclusive Environment with Louise Dorrat & Denise attended Learning Stones Project with John Murray.

Afternoon Concurrent Sessions were held after lunch - Shirley & Kim attended Embedding Quality with Catharine Hydon; Rosanna attended Building Children's Resilience with Louise Dorrat & Denise attended Creating A Circle Of Security with Jenny Enter & Sara Janssen.

Each of the concurrent sessions provided staff with a mixture of ideas & concepts to reflect on in our daily practice as Early Childhood Educators. In fact, quite a bit of that reflection & discussion about the day took place on the journey back home! *grin*

Our Afternoon Keynote Speaker was Michael Grose who spoke most entertainingly about Parenting & Raising Kids To Thrive. I've included some information about Michael's website at the bottom of this post as I believe a number of our families might find it very useful.

Following the Panel Discussion, Evaluation & Farewell we all then made the journey back home, arriving in Sale at about 6pm. It had been a wonderful (but long) day of socialisation, networking, information & reflection AND we all look forward to introducing aspects from it all into our daily work here at East Sale Kindergarten!

Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge

Did you know that The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open to children of all ages!

Families & Early Childhood Professionals are being encouraged to share the joy of reading with young children EVERY DAY!

The challenge for young children is to read 40 books – or have 40 books read to them! Children who successfully complete the Challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement at the end of the year & have the opportunity to have their names published on the Achievers Honour Roll in 'The Age' newspaper.

Today the children in our 4 Year Old Program learnt about how to be 'SneezeSafe'. You can actually find out more information about SneezeSafe by visiting here!

Did you know that when you sneeze, an irritation inside your nose can actually come flying out of your nose at more than 160km per hour! No wonder germs can spread so easily at that kind of force!

We learnt how to stop the spread of Cold & Flu by following 3 simple steps:

CATCH IT

Germs spread easily. Always use a tissue to catch your cough & sneezes.

BIN IT

Germs live on tissues for several house. Throw the tissue away immediately.

KILL IT

Hands transfer germs. Wash your hands as soon as possible.

At the end of learning all about being SneezeSafe, the children were given some information to take home for Mum & Dad to read, a Travel Pack of Kleenex Tissues & a SneezeSafe Sticker!

RAAF Excursion

After months of planning & excitement - the day had finally come! Our excursion to visit the RAAF Fire Station & also the RAAF Central Flying School (CFS) was held today BUT unfortunately Mother Nature wasn't on our side with rain & flash flooding forecast as well!

Nonetheless, we decided to go ahead with our excursion - we all rugged up, coats & beanies, scarves & jackets and headed out aboard our bus & had a simply fantastic day! For our 4 Year Old families at East Sale Kindergarten, make sure you check out our 'Learning Journal' entry for this week as we'll provide more detail & photos on exactly what the children got to do & see in there!

First stop was the RAAF Fire Station! With a brand new Fire Truck only delivered last week, we were one of the first to get the grand tour of it's fantastic features! The children were most impressed by the size of it!

After boarding the bus again, we travelled to the Central Flying School (CFS) where we were shown all the special things that a pilot wears, all their safety gear AND then the most exciting thing happened . . . we all walked out to one of the aeroplane hangers & got to look at a Roulette up close & personal! So close in fact that we even got to climb onto the wing of one & look inside where the pilot sits!

What a simply amazing day we had, despite the terrible weather. I'm sure that the children's excitement & interest in all they saw & learnt will flow over into the remaining weeks of this term as we reflect on the day & look to extend their learning opportunities at the same time!

Sale Greyhounds BINGO Night

On behalf of the East Sale Kindergarten Family Group we would like to extend a very big thankyou to everyone who supported our raffle at the Sale Greyhounds Bingo Night on Monday. We really appreciate the efforts of families who donated items, asked businesses for donations & also those who attended the evening. The Bingo evening was a big success for East Sale Kindergarten with over seven hundred of dollars being raised & owe also had one of our 3 Year Old families having a big BINGO win too! Congratulations!

We were absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of donations received. We were able to put together a fantastic raffle table and still have a few prizes left over for use for other fundraisers later in the year!

We would like to thank the following local businesses that donated goods or vouches for our raffle prizes - your support was so very much valued & appreciated!

Bread Donuts!

Oh how we love cooking at East Sale Kindergarten & today Mrs. Murray showed us how to make a sometimes food - Bread Donuts! Those of you who are former families of East Sale Kindergarten will remember them well I'm sure as they seem to have been a favourite here for quite some time!

First you make a Jam Sandwich - take some bread, cut the crusts off, spread some Strawberry Jam on, put the lid on the sandwich & then cut it into four (4) pieces.

While the children were busy making their sandwiches, Mrs. Murray & another group of children started preparing the batter - just a simple pancake batter is perfect!

Next - very carefully - a grown-up will heat up a little oil in a frying pan & then each square or triangle of sandwich is dipped into the batter, fried until golden & then rolled in a little caster sugar with cinnamon!

Mmm! Remember though - these are only a sometimes food!

The latest issue of 'Grow & Thrive' from The Royal Children's Hospital is now available & focusses on Oral Health.

"Healthy teeth and gums are essential for children’s immediate and long-term health and wellbeing, and can almost always prevent the common problem of tooth decay and its many related complications. There's lots you can do to promote the importance of oral health."

Footy Colours Day

It's been a very big week at East Sale Kindergarten in the 4 Year Old Program & today we ended the week by holding a Footy Colours Day!

Today we all came dressed in our favourite team colours (or some just their favourite colours), we created footy pom poms & painted our favourite footy jumpers, had our faces painted with footy stripes, had a 'Team' photo taken, played a game of footy & then enjoyed a terrific sausage sizzle outside in the wonderful sunshine! Thanks Mrs. Murray! They were great sausages!

What an awesome day! If families would like to see our 'Team' photo, just take a peak in our 'Learning Journal' at Kindergarten the next time you are in!
