So Far In 2009

Okay, the idea of keeping this news page updated on a regular and frequent basis sounded fairly reasonable and manageable, but.............

With winter all but over, ESA artists are making plans for spring and early summer.

Whitney and Syed will be returning home from their annual three month show in Scottsdale, AZ and spring break with family in CA just in time for all four of us to exhibit in the local Waterworks 50th Anniversary Celebration Invitational Art show right here in Salisbury. Following a trip to Malaysia to visit Syed's family, their plans include Whitney's gourd workshops (http://www.whitneypeckman.com/ ), painting exhibition and of course, a schedule of weekend fine art shows for all of us.

Michael was honored recently with a dedication ceremony for one of his sculptures. "Sentinel 2" was purchased by private citizens and donated to the city of Salisbury for a permanent location in the designated "entertainment district".

Gallery 122 will host a 12 week sculpture show in the gallery beginning May 1st. The show will feature smaller works from the same 13 artists who are exhibiting in the 9 month Salisbury sculpture show 2009 (http://www.salisburysculptureshow.com/)

New Year Greeting from 4 Artists at ESA

Where the time has gone since Oct. I don't know! 1500 people went through ESA on Home Tour weekend, enjoying the loft living spaces, studios and galleries. Many hadn't been in the building since it was the Bambi Bakery back in...........'02 maybe!

November was full of shows around NC and then the Holiday Season. Now we have a New Year and many opportunities for new beginnings, new ideas and new work. ESA will be making some physical changes this year - so keep watching in the spring.

There will be shows of our own work and that of a few invited artists, along with some classes and workshops. Announcements will be made ahead of our official "Open" month of May, but please email us and we'll put you on our mailing list for all of our events.

And just because we aren't "officially" open till May doesn't mean we wouldn't love to see you and show you the galleries - just ring the bell at 122 and if we aren't traveling to a show, we'll gladly show you around.

It doesn't seem like it could be October in just two days, but the busy summer all four of us have had will soon be a memory.

The months of August and September included lots of travel to art shows, sculpture shows, exhibitions, a fantastic blues concert held in our building, and a certain amount of time (for some way more than others) devoted to learning about the candidates in the important presidential election coming up soon.

As we move into fall we look forward to the events we have planned (listed on this website) for our "open month" of October,and our fall art show show schedule taking all of us to different cities. And very important, is the new art that each artist is working on in their studios.

The first major event involves getting ready for the historic home tour here in Salisbury--nothing like the thought of several thousand people coming through your home in one weekend to get you moving in the direction of finishing up little (and big) home projects. Makes us all realize that this huge project will always be "a work in progress." Also looking forward to the weekend being an opportunity to showcase art in the galleries.

We continue to look forward to our Pecha Kucha Night and adding presenters to our list for the evening. After attending a PKN in Charlotte last week we are even more excited to have our event.

Botkins Sculpture Show and Installation

Michael and Connie recently returned from Ohio where Michael participated in the 2nd Annual Botkins Sculpture Show. Last year Michael was commissioned to design and fabricate the first sculpture to be installed in the Botkins Community Park. The installation and ceremony took place before the show. In attendance at the ceremony were many Botkins citizens and dignitaries including the patron for the sculpture, Mr. Frank Thaman of Sidney, Ohio.
" I had the opportunity to speak during the ceremony where I told the audience that I was honored to have the first sculpture in the park and hoped that it was the first of many to come".
The communities goal is to create a sculpture garden in the park for the enjoyment of both local residents and visitors.

Art sales Are "Hot"

Whitney and Syed are both working in their studios and keeping the galleries open and events happening for the months of June and July.

Michael and Connie have now started their art show and travel schedule.

That schedule began with record high 100+ degrees at Rittenhouse Square Art Show in Philadelphia.It was then on to 90+ degrees on the boardwalk in Virginia Beach VA.

Sooo.. the weather and the sales were "hot".

In June Michael & Connie traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio for the first year of the Riverspan Sculpture Show located on the Purple People Bridge. There were 85 sculptors from throughout the U.S. exhibiting during the weekend. For more information on Riverspan: http://www.riverspansculpturegroup.org/

First Annual Sculpture Show Planned

In effort to provide a stimulating and creative atmosphere for the Public Art Committee,EastSquare ArtWorks hosted the monthly early morning meeting last week. Commitment and curiosity resulted in great attendance. Among the items on the agenda was discussion and reports concerning the proposed first annual sculpture show in historic downtown Salisbury currently in the planning process for next year. Michael's sculpture along with the "5 Sculptors" exhibition at ESA helped to keep their minds on the matters at hand.Before and after the meeting, committee members visited both Gallery 120 and Gallery 122 to see the artwork of the resident artists.

Heard through the grapevine later was the group enjoyed the meeting place so much, they would like to try meeting at galleries and studios more in the future.

A Framing Night Out with Bruce Wilson

Who knew what a difference the right choice of frame makes to a painting? Bruce's talk and examples of framing options opened up new ways of seeing artwork in your home. His stories and anecdotes brought smiles to us all - thanks, Bruce, for a delightful evening at EastSquare ArtWorks!

The variety of art work on display led to much excitement, many questions (and sales). The artful centerpieces, tasty nibbles and intelligent conversation kept us energized and looking forward to the next ESA event. Thanks for all the emails and enthusiasm over our burgeoning arts incubator.

MAY and We're OPEN

Beautiful day in the neighborhood!! We're still painting and placing artwork, but people are stopping by and helping us celebrate the openings of our studios and galleries. Look for our bright new entryways for Gallery One Twenty (mustard) and Gallery One Twenty Two (terra cotta)...a nice addition to a heretofor drab parking lot.
