Sydney Sports Camp 2009

“I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

WHEREAS for the past 79 years Easter Seals Nova Scotia has been helping children, youth and adults with physical disabilities obtain necessary devices such as wheelchairs, walkers and communication aids; and

WHEREAS Easter Seals provides family and community support including job skills training for adults with physical disabilities, support networks and information for families with disability concerns; and

WHEREAS  March is Easter Seals Month

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED all members of this the dedication and commitment of Easter Seals Nova Scotia to the people of the province.”

During the month of March and beginning of April Easter Seals Nova Scotia fund-raising and awareness events were well attended & contributed to raising over $125,000 for Easter Seals Nova Scotia’s programs and services for Nova Scotians with physical disabilities.  These events  included a Giant Easter Egg Hunt at the Mic Mac Mall; the sale of Paper Eggs throughout the province, a coin box campaign in the NSLCs across the province, and the Easter Seals Mail Campaign. Thank you to our many volunteers, sponors and donors throughout this campaign! 

Activities include scavenger style hunt for treats for kids 6-12 from 9-9:30 am and Bunny Walk escorted tour for kids 0-5 to collect treats 9:30-10am.   Special prizes for finding the one Golden Egg and 3 Silver Eggs include up to $100 to Cleves Source for Sports.   Bunny Land will be open in the mall from 10:30-8pm for photos with the Easter Bunny for $7 each and colouring contest ($2 to enter).

The commencement of this year’s event marks an urgent call for public support for Easter Seals programs and services in 2010. Increased program demands are exceeding available funding. We need public support. We need your help.

How can you help?
Easter Seals Nova Scotia needs to be proactive and fill this gap between meeting our communities’ needs and having the means to do so, by demonstrating to Nova Scotians that this must be a shared responsibility.

There are many ways to get involved and to give:

• Easter Seals’ Paper Egg campaign: March 8 to April 4^th Purchase an “egg” for $2 at participating stores across Nova Scotia: Lawtons, TB!S, Price Chopper, Money Mart, The UPS Store, Sylvan Learning Centres, New Leaf Cafes, Sobeys  and Walmart (starting March 25). Paper Eggs will also be sold in the Mic Mac Mall at Bentley Leather, Bombay Company, Frame It, Gap, and Orange Julius.
• Easter Seal’s Giant Easter Egg Hunt! Saturday April 3 from 9-10am, for $5 each, children can participate in the largest Easter Egg Hunt in Atlantic Canada, held indoors at the Mic Mac Mall in Dartmouth.  Register online at www.easterseals.ns.ca.
• Easter Seals’ Spring Mail Campaign Donations can be directed through the mail in response to the Easter Seals’ spring-time mail campaign.
• Easter Seals Nova Scotia online Donations can be made online at www.easterseals.ns.ca.
• Easter Seals Nova Scotia’s upcoming events Individuals, families & teams can register for exciting community events to raise money for Easter Seals. Visit www.easterseals.ns.ca for information about upcoming summer and fall events: Zip Zone (Rappelling off the Macdonald Bridge), Drop Zone (Rappelling off 1801 Hollis Street CREIT Building), and the Adventure Challenge (a Geo-Cache race!)

Why give to Easter Seals Nova Scotia?
Easter Seals Nova Scotia is a provincial charity where all money raised through fundraising events in the province stays in Nova Scotia directly helping individuals and families in need. Easter Seals Nova Scotia works in collaboration with the government of Nova Scotia to ensure that no family gets left behind regardless of annual income.

Donations made to Easter Seals Nova Scotia help families and individuals with physical disabilities afford wheelchairs and other assistive equipment; attend accessible summer camps and recreation programs; and participate in adult day programs, work training and community employment.

Easter Seals Nova Scotia is a registered provincial charity. Charitable tax receipts are issued where applicable.

“New Leaf Cafés give our clients the opportunity to be independent, to learn something new every day, and be contributing and valued members of our community. We are excited to be opening at Parkstone Enhanced Care and look forward to fostering new relationships and learning from one another.” says Veronica Dale, Manager of New Leaf Enterprises.   As Joyce puts it, this initiative is about “community helping community.”

The Resident’s Council at Parkstone was instrumental in seeing a New Leaf Café in their residence. Shannex invited the Resident’s Council to select a retail venue of their choice. Ballem said the reason they chose New Leaf Café was because of a very positive experience she has at New Leaf Café at the Rehabilitation Hospital on Summer St and because she figured staff and residents both would appreciate a café venue.

“Everybody wanted it, everybody supported it. We went to all (194) residents to see what everyone wanted, and they all wanted a New Leaf Café. We wanted it for our staff too, they are part of our family.”  – Joyce Ballem

Congratulation to all the superheros who conquered their own fears to make their leap into action!! In total these individuals raised $120 000 for Easter Seals Nova Scotia!
