Why?

More free time

Lots of sunlight makes you feel active

More daylight during class hours

What training changes should you prepare for in summer?

Drink lots of water, before, during and after practice

Bring a towel (for all the sweating)

Bring outside shoes to lessons (because it's so nice out)

Wear comfortable clothing to and from lessons and change into the uniform in the school. You get the best of all situations: comfortable, dry clothing coming to and from class and the proper etiquette of being dressed for class correctly.

Don't forget to be safe if training outdoors. Be aware of cars and lanes of traffic. Look out for people that may not see that you are practicing.

Open House Classes

Eastern Ways will have an Open House event Saturday, December 17 from 9am-12noon! One who will persevere, who will never capitulate. A Black Sash will do anything to succeed."

This "Black Sash Attitude" is found at the heart of the Black Sash Club, special weekly Club-member only classes that focus on specialized, advanced, and difficult material. Right now, it includes 2 person forms, practical weapon training and advanced Kung Fu energy development and Chi Kung.

The Black Sash Club also gets special yearly seminars with Tai Sifu Hubbard for free- so don't miss out! This year's seminars come up on August 27!

Summer Time

The summer is especially challenging for people with families! Vacations and school breaks can make a person busier than ever!
When summer comes, it is especially important to dedicate time to your training. If you have a more open schedule during the summer, set aside a portion of time every day to your training. It's simple math: 10 minutes a day is 70 minutes a week. 70 minutes a week is 280 (or more) minutes per month. 280 minutes per month is 840 minutes by the end of summer.
That's 14 hours by summer's end! The equivalent of 14 additional group classes or 28 additional private lessons - and it only took 10 minutes a day!
Let's not forget that most of us find that when you practice for 10 minutes, you feel good. You want to practice even longer. That time will continue to accrue, and before you know it, it's 20 minutes, 30 minutes, the sky's the limit!
Don't forget to hydrate and keep your body fueled! If you are burning calories, you may need some calories to keep things going! Don't get heat exhaustion or dehydration from pushing too hard without being prepared!

Tournament Training

The Eastern Ways Tournament is coming! How do you train for a tournament? This is a great question, and one that can depend on the sort of competition that you are doing.

The first step to good preparation for a tournament is to get to group class! Why?
1. The group class may give you the opportunity to practice competing in front of an audience. As tournament approaches, we will be reserving more time during groups to prepare for tournament, and letting students demonstrate in front of the class.

2. Listen to the instructor. It sounds basic, but the things that we emphasize in class are the same things that we emphasize for good scores at tournament. Sink down! Relax your shoulders! Use your waist! Sound familiar? We'll be looking at those things at tournament, too.

3. Look at what other people are doing. If you see advanced students, remember that they have probably been to tournament and competed before, so they may know what judges look for. Even if they haven't competed, they have tested and performed many times before. Their stancing, power and general confidence will reflect this, so copy what you see!

4. Look at students who are at your level, too. You may be competing against these people and you want to know what to expect. If they have a technique that works well for them (strong eye contact, good gil-siks [yells], low guard stance), see if it will work for you too. If it's not your strong point, what will you do to compete against it?

Be prepared! Preparation will mean you can have fun and get the most out of the experience!

Maximize your training time with Grandmaster!

Here are a few ideas of ways to maximize your training time with Grandmaster:
1. Bring a camera so that you can have your photo taken with Grandmaster (maybe with your Instructor too?)
2. Write down some questions that you've always had on Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Chinese history, feng shui, lion dancing, Chinese medicine, etc. If your Instructor didn't know the answer (we're not perfect), Grandmaster probably will.
3. Bring a Grandmaster book, video, or even a sword scabbard, and ask Grandmaster to sign it. Don't have any of the above? Write in a notebook about what you did at the seminar, and ask Grandmaster to sign it.
4. Have a school project that you need sources for? If it's on Chinese history, martial arts, etc, maybe you can use Grandmaster's help.
5. Take a look at Grandmaster's website (www.plumblossom.net). Is there a story there, or a piece of information that you want to know more about? Why not ask him.

Spring is coming!

This is the time of year that makes it easy to train a little harder! The weather is getting warmer and we're getting more sunlight, so take to the outdoors for your training! Make sure that you have good shoes, lots of water, sunblock and sunglasses.
Don't be foolish about your outdoors training; if training in a parking lot (such as the one at your favorite Eastern Ways location) be aware of traffic and other potential hazards like holes or pedestrians. If training in a park or other area, be aware of conditions - it may be wet, uneven, etc. - and also remember that your average park-goer may not be as used to Choy Li Fut or Tai Chi as you are, so when you swing that spear or sword around, they may stare...or call the police. Be aware! :)
Don't train in the street; a lot of us have tried it and done it, but it's just not safe, and we train for health and well-being first, right?

Have fun!

This is it!

Hi everyone!

This is the start of the new Eastern Ways® training blog!

As a start, check out the new classes starting in Fair Oaks the first Wednesday of February (Feb. 3).

6pm - Fitness Challenge!
