Lock Haven PA, 7 February 2012 - After over a month away, Eastern Wrestling is returning to tha task of providing wrestling information, news and updates. EW stopped posting on December 30th, as this writer took 3 Lady Eagles from Lock Hvaen University to Austria for 12 days of training. After returning, other tasks related to the program prevented a return to consistently updating the site. Of particular note was a weekend mini-camp with athletes from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. The Maruaders, with their coach Stefanie Howorun (a former Canadian national team member) participated in six training sessions that included technique, live wrestling, and conditioning. The training was open to the public, and attendance at the afternoon sessions was high. We're now back to a more routine pace, so we will return to keeping EW up to date, as well improving what we offer. Please contact EW with suggestions and ideas as to the best way to meet your needs and interests. Also, remember that you can advertise your school or club activities here for free. Hawkeyes Have Three Top Seeds at Midlands

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Eleven University of Iowa wrestlers are listed among the top contenders at the 49th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The tournament committee announced the top contenders field today. Nine of Iowa's tournament-best 11 top contenders are among the top eight seeds, including No. 1 seeds Tony Ramos (133), Montell Marion (141) and Derek St. John (157).

The Midlands Championships are hosted by Northwestern University Dec. 29-30 inside Welsh-Ryan Arena. Iowa has won 21 team titles at the Midlands Championships, more than any other team in the 48-year history of the event.

Final brackets for the event will be released the morning of Thursday, Dec. 29. A complete list of tournament contenders is as follows:

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Eight members of the Nittany Lion wrestling team continue to be ranked in the latest version of the Intermat national individual rankings. Four Nittany Lion All-Americans are ranked in the top five and all eight are listed in the top 15. Penn State is No. 5 in the latest NWCA/USA Today Coaches dual meet poll and Intermat gives the Lions a No. 3 nod in its tournament power index (TPI).

Three-time All-American Frank Molinaro (Barnegat, N.J.) is 11-0 on the year and ranked No. 1 at 149. All-American David Taylor (St. Paris, Ohio) is 9-0 thus far and is No. 1 at 165 and All-American Ed Ruth (Harrisburg, Pa.) is 10-0 at ranked No. 2 at 174. Two-time All-American Quentin Wright (Wingate, Pa.) is No. 5 at 184 with an 8-2 mark.
Senior Cameron Wade (Twinsburg, Ohio) is 8-2 at heavyweight and is ranked No. 8. True freshman Morgan McIntosh (Santa Ana, Calif.) is 6-2 at 197 and ranked No. 11 while red-shirt freshman Dylan Alton (Mill Hall, Pa.) is 8-2 at 157 and ranked No. 10 as well. True freshman Nico Megaludis (Murrysville, Pa.) is 9-1 at 125 and ranked No. 13.

Penn State is No. 5 nationally, trailing No. 1 Iowa, No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 3 Minnesota and No. 4 Cornell. Ohio State (6), Illinois (7), Michigan (8), Nebraska (14) and Northwestern (18) are the other Big Ten schools ranked in the top 25 while Purdue is receiving votes. Iowa tops Intermat's TPI with 91.5 points, followed by Oklahoma State with 90.5 and Penn State with 85 (tied with Minnesota). Cornell is fifth with 66.5.

The Nittany Lions head to the Southern Scuffle for New Year's, taking part in the two-day, team scored tournament on Jan. 1-2 at UT-Chattanooga. Penn State's next home dual is on Sunday, Jan. 22, when Iowa invades Rec Hall for a 2 p.m. dual that is already sold out. The Nittany Lions then host Ohio State on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. Fans can purchase a limited number of `standing room only' tickets for the Ohio State dual by calling 814-865-5555. Tickets are priced at $8 for adults and $5 for youth (18 and under) and can be purchased from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day or in person at the Bryce Jordan Center box office. A maximum of four tickets may be purchased per person.
The full season slate of live dual meet and tournament action will air locally on WRSC AM (1390 AM) with Friday evening duals being simulcast on WRSC FM (103.1 FM). Lock Haven's WBPZ (1230 AM) will also carry the entire season live, WIEZ (690 AM) in Huntingdon/Lewistown carries all Sunday events and further affiliates may be added soon. Ernest James Named PSAC Wrestler of the Week; Boro Ranked 24th by NWCA

EDINBORO, Pa. (Dec. 21, 2011) – Edinboro University sophomore Ernest James (Medford, NY/ Longwood) has been named the PSAC Wrestler of the Week for the week ending December 19. James led the Fighting Scots to a 37-12 win over Clarion in their EWL opener on Monday night.
James improved to 17-4 with an impressive win by fall over Quintas McCorkle at heavyweight to wrap up a match in which the Fighting Scots won five bouts by bonus points. He has now matched his win total from a year ago when he finished 17-16. It marked the second time he was honored by the PSAC.
In addition, James is one of six Edinboro wrestlers ranked in the latest weekly polls. He is now 17th according to Amateur Wrestling News, along with 20th in the InterMat rankings. In addition, he is 21st in the WrestlingReport.com poll.

As a team Edinboro remains 24th in the latest NWCA/USA Today Division I Coaches Poll. The Fighting Scots are also 18th in InterMat’s Tournament-Strength Rankings, 17th in WIN Magazine’s Tournament Power Index, and 14th in the WrestlingReport.com rankings. Edinboro is also ranked fifth in the NWMA Division I Mid Major Poll. This poll includes all Division I wrestling schools that do not sponsor a football program in a BCS conference. The poll is endorsed by the National Wrestling Media Association and is chaired by the National Collegiate Open.

First, EW would like to send Christmas greetings and the wish for a happy new year to everyone. Thanks for using the site to keep updated on wrestling news of interest to eastern fans. As you may know, the purpose for starting the EW site is to promote wrestling in the eastern US in general, and specifically to be a vehicle for helping to support the Women's Wrestling Project. We would like to build our readership and viewer stats to be able to encourage advertisers to place ads on our site. All the proceeds from our site will be used to directly support ATHLETES - young girls and women who are training seriously for wrestling. More specifically, we want to make wrestling in PA and the surrouning states the center of international wrestling excellence - as evidence by eastern women earning medals and championships and the world and Olympic levels. As a result, we believe that what we learn form developing the women's side will provide more infformation for success on the men's side as well. With the women, we have a great opportunity to start closer to the begining of the process of athlete development, without repeating some methods or concepts are aren't productive, and developing those that are. You can help us by 1.) using the site frequently; 2.) recommending it to others; 3.) forewarding our link or linking your site to ours; 4.) subscribing to EW; 5.) visiting the Women's Wrestling Project site and repating the steps above; 2.) telling other coaches about EWand the Women's Wrestling Project. If you subscribe to, or contact us, we will not sell your email or contact information, or share it in any way with anyone. It will only be used to keep you informed of wrestling news and events, including the Women's Wrestling Project. At EW we believe that the eastern US should be the center of excellence in the world for both men's and women's wrestling. We have the athletes, coaches, and infrastructure, but we must be purposeful. I believe starting with a focus on the womne's side will pay tremendous dividends for our sport in many ways. RENO, Nev. – After a year off from the Reno Tournament of Champions, Oklahoma State returned to stake its claim inside the Reno Events Center – and a pair of Bulgarians.

The second-ranked Cowboys crowned five champions with Jon Morrison (125), Jordan Oliver (133), Jamal Parks (149), Chris Perry (184) and Blake Rosholt (197). Rosholt wrestling unattached, hammered teammate Cale Byers, 6-0, in the finals.

Wyoming, the 2010 Reno TOC champions, finished second with Oregon State, Binghamton and Michigan State rounding out the top five in the 20-team field. Oklahoma State won the 2009 title by 69 points. The margin in 2011 was 44 ½ after totaling 166 to Wyoming’s 115 ½.

“It was a tough day from the standpoint of matches that were rolling by really quick,” said Oklahoma State coach John Smith. “There’s a little attitude difference here and I do think we showed some conditioning issues at times. We can improve there. But overall I’m pretty pleased with where we are right now. We can take a lot of positives from today. We won some tough matches.”

#7 Illini Moves Past UT-Chattanooga 30-6

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois wrestling team started their home schedule with a victory as they took down UT-Chattanooga 30-6 to improve to 7-1 on the season. Eight of the ten Illini won their matches, including Jesse Delgado, Daryl Thomas, Eric Terrazas, Guy Kirby, Jackson Morse, Jordan Blanton, Tony Dallago and Mario Gonzalez. Delgado recorded a technical fall and Dallago logged a pin in their respective matches to help boost the Orange and Blue over the Mocs at Huff Hall.

"I thought the guys looked really lethargic," head coach Jim Heffernan said. "They seemed tired and not mentally fresh. However, it was good to be home after a long hard week and it gave a chance for our home crowd to see Delgado and Dallago wrestle. I think Kirby's victory was the highlight of the dual. He did a great job."

The Bucknell wrestling team entered Saturday's Bison Duals in Davis Gym looking for its first win of the year and it ended up with two. The Bison defeated EIWA foes Princeton (27-9) and Sacred Heart (51-0) by convincing margins before concluding the day with a tighter-than-the-score-indicated 21-12 loss to Central Michigan, which is ranked 19th nationally in the latest NWCA/USA Today rankings. Derrik Russell, Corey Lear, Joe McMullan and Stephen McPeek each posted perfect 3-0 marks on the day as Bucknell (2-6, 2-0 EIWA) collected 21 individual victories.
