May 8: Burglary, not forced, residential, 2000 block of Minor Ave. E., 5:10 p.m. – A resident of a condo thought he heard his wife enter the downstairs door of the unit. When he went to check, he found that the wife was not there, the door was closed and his car keys were missing from a post by the door. He looked for a suspect outside but found no one. Returning to the condo, he found a second set of house keys were missing. The missing keys included car keys and keys to the condo building. A responding police officer checked for prints but found none. A vehicle was spotted that residents said was not regularly seen in the area.

New Park and Pedestrian Walkway in Eastlake needs your support

Dear Eastlake Neighbors:

I am writing to you to look for community support for the development of a pedestrian connection, possibly a pathway + stairs, via the East Howe right of way. If you're not familiar with this public right of way, it is approximately on the north edge of the old Siam Lake Union property on Fairview and is currently subsumed into the parking lot of the adjacent office building. This connection would allow access from Capitol Hill through Colonnade Park to Fairview Ave E.

Currently, the development of the former Siam site offers a chance to design and have funded a pathway/ connection along the East Howe right of way, if the community shows enough interest. If we do not support a preservation of this public right of way at this time, it likely will be lost forever to public use.

Another reason why it would be especially good to act now is because of the vacancy NOAA has created and the resulting potential for incorporating better public access to the shores of Lake Union at this location. The developer for the Siam site is expressing a strong interest in contributing to the design and development of this pedestrian walkway, so right now a few things have come together to create a brief window of opportunity to talk back a public access route, and at the same time enhance our neighborhood's pedestrian-friendliness.

To summarize, I am make a plea for your help in bringing back/ preserving E Howe as a critical link from Capitol Hill to the east shores of Lake Union. Please express your support NOW so this path may isn't lost to the community forever.

KING 5 News: SPD swarms Eastlake in weapons raid (with video)

UPDATE: The SPD Blotter has a report up on this incident. The SPD says eight people were arrested at the home in the 2300 block of Minor Ave. E. The blotter item says:

One of the men, 27, was wanted on an outstanding federal fugitive warrant as well as local charges and his brother, 33, was also wanted on warrants.

Detectives who searched the residence found two AR-15's, one equipped with a military-style grenade launcher, and a large smoke grenade. Photos of the recovered weapons are at the SPD Blotter.

Six of those arrested were interviewed and released. The two men with warrants were booked into the King County Jail.

KING 5 News reported last night on a Seattle Police Department weapons raid at a house at Minor E. and E. Louisa on Thursday evening.

KING's video report shows SWAT team members on the streets and a flash grenade going off. KING reports that people in a house at the intersection were detained.

KING's report says police were acting on a tip that a wanted felon was in the house and that weapons were also there.

The raid came after an announcement on Wednesday that SPD has partnered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the FBI in a renewed drive to get weapons off the city's streets.

Body parts found in Eastlake linked to murder victim

UPDATE: The Seattle Times reports that the murder victim whose body parts were found under the Ship Canal Bridge is Donald S. Meyer, a 53-year-old Ballard man.

The Seattle Police Department is reporting this morning that body parts found under the Ship Canal Bridge in December belong to a murder victim discovered last July.

According to the SPD, DNA tests confirm that the body parts found in the 3100 block of Fairview Ave. E. on the morning of Dec. 10, 2011, belong to a 53-year-old man whose torso was discovered at a recycling plant in Georgetown in July, 2011.

The SPD Blotter quotes Seattle Police Department Homicide Unit Lieutenant Steve Wilske as saying:

“We’ve been able to link the two sets of remains. They are from the same person.”

The case is still being investigated, Lt. Wilske is quoted as saying, adding that detectives believe it was "not a random act."

Three volunteers from Heroes for the Homeless were checking the hillside on the morning of Dec. 10 when a volunteer stepped on a plastic bag containing a human leg.

Roanoke Park planting party photos

Eastlake neighbors gathered at the newly renovated Roanoke Park (E. Roanoke and Fairview E.) on Saturday, March 31, to put in new plants.

Despite cold and rain, a group of about two dozen volunteers gathered to do the planting. Amanda Bailey, a local landscape designer, did the planting design for the park, which was renovated by the city. Carsten Stinn, a local resident and project manager at Perkins+Will, spearheaded the project. Perkins+Will allowed Stinn and others to work on the project as part of the firm's committment to the community.

The project was sponsored by the Eastlake Social Club with the support of the Eastlake Community Council, the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department and the Seattle Department of Transportation. Funding for the $50,000 project is coming from the city.

A second piece of Roanoke Park, which faces Mallard Cove, remains to be renovated. Funding for that project isn't yet available.

March 28: Fire, 2300 block of Fairview Ave. E., 12:41 a.m.
March 28: Trespass, 2300 block of Eastlake Ave. E., 10:15 a.m.
March 29: Burglary, forced, non-residential, 2300 block of Eastlake Ave. E., 3:15 a.m.: A person who lives above a tavern on this block heard a window being broken. She stepped onto a balcony and saw a suspect running south on Eastlake carrying a flatscreen TV from the tavern. The suspect was described as a black male 5' 8.5-11", 200 pounds, shaved head, wearing a blue or black sweatshirt that had white stitching around the collar. He also had on faded baggy blue jeans and snekaers. Another witness saw the same thing. A K9 unit was called and tracked the suspect westbound onto E. Lynn and possibly in the alley west of the 2300 block of Eastlake E. The suspect was not apprehended.
March 29: Burglary, unoccupied structure on residential property, 3200 block of Eastlake Ave. E., 1:46 p.m.: An unknown suspect entered the parking garage attached to this apartment building between March 29 at 6 p.m. and March 30 at 3 a.m. and took items from the victim's car's trunk. Stolen were two bottles of wine, a camera and lens, and one iPod.
March 31: Injury, 3200 block of Harvard E., 3:34 a.m.
March 31: Commercial burglary, 2000 block of Yale E., reported 10:06 p.m.: Sometime between March 23 at 8 a.m. and today at 6 p.m., two bicycles were stolen from a basement area.
March 31: Disturbance, Eastlake E. and E. Lynn, 9:10 p.m.
April 1: Burglary, residential, unoccupied, 1500 block of Eastlake E., reported at 2:39 p.m.: Sometime between March 24 at noon and today at 2 p.m., a suspect gained entry to the parking garage in this apartment building and stole the victim's bicycle. There may be video surveillance footage of the area.

Volunteer work party Saturday to plant Eastlake's renovated Roanoke Park

The renovated Roanoke Park will move a step closer to completion on Saturday, March 31, when Eastlake neighbors gather to put in plantings.

A volunteer work party will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and everyone is invited.

The small park at the foot of E. Roanoke, site of the Boeing Company's original airplane factory, has long been in need of renovation. Ivy had taken over the site which includes four Heritage Trees and a public access point to Lake Union.

As we reported in February, work on renovating the park began with neighborhood resident Carsten Stinn. Stinn is a project designer at Perkins+Will, a national design firm with an office in Seattle that dedicates one percent of its staffs’ work hours to developing projects that will benefit the greater community. Stinn proposed the park project to Perkins+Will and the firm decided to undertake it. Employees from the firm spent more than 200 hours drawing up plans for the park.

Stinn recruited others in the neighborhood to help, including Johann Wassermann, a surveyor; Amanda Bailey, a local landscape designer; and Mary Hansen, Linda Furney, Dane Jensen and Tim Ahlers. The project was sponsored by the Eastlake Social Club with the support of the Eastlake Community Council, the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department and the Seattle Department of Transportation. Funding for the $50,000 project is coming from the city.

Saturday's work party is the next step in the project. Stinn would also like to renovate a second piece of the park, which faces Mallard Cove. Funding for that project isn't available at this time.

News from TOPS: New principal named; fundraising auction is this Saturday

Two items from TOPS@Seward, Eastlake's neighborhood school:

New principal: A new principal for the school was announced by Dr. Susan Enfield, interim superintendent of Seattle Public Schools, on March 21, The new principal is Dr. Chris Scott, who will assume the post at TOPS@Seward on July 30.

According to a letter from Dr. Enfield to the TOPS community, Dr. Scott comes from Raleigh, N.C., where he's currently the principal of a gifted and talented magnet school. According to a note from Dr. Enfield:

Dr. Scott earned his doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he focused on social justice and equity in public education and conducted research addressing educational opportunities of American Indian students.

The process of hiring Dr. Scott included interviews with a team of four parents, three certificated staff and one classified staff member. Members of the hiring committee were nominated by the TOPS Site Council.

Janis White, chair of the TOPS@Seward Site Council, said in an email that the selection of Dr. Scott was "really exciting news! It's also a great example of how a school community can collaborate with the District to choose its instructional leader -- many people worked hard to make this happen."

In an email to TOPS parents, White said:

Many people worked hard on this process – the parents who answered our surveys about the qualities they were looking for in our next principal, parents who attended community meetings to discuss the search, parents and teachers who helped write the job description, the Site Council and the parents and staff on the selection committee who spent many hours reviewing applications, interviewing candidates and reaching consensus on their recommendations to the Superintendent.

According to SeattlePI.com, more than 850 stores in Washington have applied for a license to sell hard liquor under new rules put in place by the passage of Initiative 1183.

That initiative, passed by voters in November, gets the state out of the liquor sales business. Gone will be the state liquor stores. Now you'll be able to buy hard booze at stores that receive a spirits license from the state.

So far, the only store in Eastlake to apply for a spirits license is Pete's Super Market at E. Lynn and Fairview E. Pete's application is "pending," according to the Washington State Liquor Control Board's website. Pete's is known for its big wine selection.

Vanessa Ho, writing at SeattlePI.com, says I-1183 "allows stores at least 10,000 square feet to sell vodka, gin and other spirits. There’s an exception for smaller stores, if no other store sells liquor in its 'trade area.' The state still needs to define that term."

Eastlake resident seeks your help to get into space

Eastlake resident Lauren Furgason is trying to get into space and she is asking for your support.

Furgason, 25, is one of 20 finalists in the Space Needle's Space Race 2012 contest in honor of the Needle's 50th anniversary. The prize: a sub-orbital space trip.

As part of the contest, Furgason made a video in which she tells her reasons for wanting to go into space. She explains in the video:

When I was three, I ran away from home, trying to get to the moon. And while the Space Needle has watched over Seattle, I’ve ventured far from home, working hard to make my way around the earth. Now I’m ready to see what’s beyond, what’s waiting overhead.

To help send her on her way, she needs people to vote for her video on Facebook. Click here to view the video and vote for her.

In her video, Furgason talks about her passion for adventure and is seen training for the flight wearing a costume spacesuit, drinking a Rocket Fuel energy drink and spinning on a playground "centrifuge."

Born and raised in Seattle, Furgason is a University of Washington graduate. She works as a strategist for a branding design agency near Pioneer Square. This is the first time she's done a video like this. She got friends to help and then spent a day shooting.

She says her adventurous spirit inspired her to enter the contest.

"I'm always in search of my next adventure," she says. "Not in a bucket-list kind of way, but to see and understand the world at large so I can be more well-rounded as I continue to make life decisions everyday, and influence the way I think in my career."

If she wins, her goal would be to help represent the next step in space travel, commercial fliers like herself.

"To be a local that has grown up in the shadow of the Needle, it would be an honor to represent this once-in-a-lifetime experience that would be to inspire people around the world to dream big," she says.

And how great to think that Eastlake would have its own representative in space!

Restaurant notes: Blind Pig reviewed, new Louisa's menu and more

New menus, new review, new baby and more from Eastlake's restaurant scene:

BLIND PIG REVIEW – The Seattle Times' restaurant critic, Providence Cicero, wrote a glowing review of Blind Pig Bistro, 2238 Eastlake Ave. E., in the Feb. 17 edition of the paper.

Cicero praised chef Charles Walpole's cooking and singled out several menu items that she hopes "never get erased" from the restaurant's menu chalkboard. Those items included a "raw Fat Bastard oyster sprinkled with icy granules of grapefruit and pimenton" and a hamachi crudo.

From Cicero's review:

Walpole makes imaginative use of winter produce. Roasted kale and radish bulk up fluffy quinoa: a cool salad with a warm poached-egg topper and the salty crunch of fried capers in every compelling bite. Golden beets, blood oranges, sorrel and fennel deliver sweet, acid, grass and crunch in splendid unison.

NEW MENU AT LOUISA'S – Alcena Plum, owner/chef at Louisa's Cafe Bakery, 2379 Eastlake Ave. E., unveiled a new menu on Feb. 6. The restaurant is now serving breakfast until 3 p.m. daily.

In addition, Plum says she's done "an entire overhaul to our breakfast/lunch menu, going back our Southern Comfort style roots. That means old-fashioned brunch favorites that even a Northerner could fall in lurve with." Check out the new menus here.

Plum says on her blog that this is just the first of several changes at Louisa's.

TWO EVENTS AT SERAFINA – Serafina, 2043 Eastlake Ave. E., has two events coming up:

Neo Classic: A Modern Approach to Classic Cocktails, 3 p.m., Feb. 25: Jay Sambar shows how to use classic cocktail recipes as a starting point for creativity at the bar. Cost is $60.

Mayor McGinn to have Town Hall in Eastlake on March 6

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn will hold a Town Hall in Eastlake from 5-6 p.m. on March 6.

The event will be at the TOPS@Seward School, 2500 Franklin Ave. E.

The event is one of a series of Town Halls that McGinn will be participating in all around the city as part of his Engage Seattle initiative. The idea is to give people who live and work in Seattle a chance to have direct contact with the mayor and tell him what's on their minds and what their concerns are.

Work begins on renovation to Roanoke street end park

Construction work has begun on a community project that will renovate the Roanoke street end park, home to four Heritage Trees and one of Eastlake’s access points to Lake Union.

The project is the result of a collaboration between community members and Perkins+Will architects, under the sponsorship of the Eastlake Social Club and with the support of the Eastlake Community Council, the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department and the Seattle Department of Transportation. Funding for the project is coming from the city.

City crews began removing asphalt at the site last week to get an idea of the extent of tree roots under the project. It is expected that new planting at the site might take place by the end of March. Completion of the project is expected by April 2012.

The first work on the park renovation came from neighborhood resident Carsten Stinn. Stinn is a project designer at Perkins+Will, a national design firm with an office in Seattle that dedicates one percent of its staffs’ work hours to developing projects that will benefit the greater community.

The aging park had long been on Stinn's radar so he proposed it to Perkins+Will as a community project. The firm chose to dedicate time to the design and management of the renovation.

The park, located where E. Roanoke turns onto Fairview E., was in need of some help. Ivy had taken over much of the space. Benches were falling apart and asphalt walkways were cracked.

When Perkins+Will agreed to work on the design for the park, Stinn connected with a neighborhood resident, Johann Wassermann, a surveyor who agreed to help. Perkins+Will employees spent more than 200 hours drawing up plans for the park with an initial survey. (See the attached renderings.)

Amanda Bailey, a local landscape designer, donated many hours of her time to craft a planting design. Other Eastlake residents who donated their time included Mary Hansen, Linda Furney, Dane Jensen and Tim Ahlers.

Stinn describes the pre-renovation park as a “sea of asphalt.” His hope was to separate the park more from the street and provide more plants. Plans also include more access to Lake Union at the park. Ultimately, he’d like to see a pedestrian and bike path marked in the area. The renovated park will also be accessible to the disabled.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department had public meetings to gather community input on the project. The city will do the major construction on the project, Stinn says, and neighbors and employees of Perkins+Will will do the planting and provide artwork.

“It’s really nice to see that there’s collaboration,” Stinn says about working with the city.

According to David Graves, senior planner for Seattle Parks, the city has reviewed Perkins+Will’s proposal and made modifications so it meets city standards. Money for the project is coming from the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop fund.

The Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop Master Plan identified improvements to a street end or street ends around Lake Union to enhance the loop experience as a projects to be funded. Cost of the project will be approximately $50,000.

Graves praised neighbors for being the motivators behind the project and also Perkins+Will, the firm where Stinn is employed, for allowing him the time to work on the project.

It had been hoped that funding would be found to include work on a second, smaller section of the park that lies parallel to Roanoke and faces Mallard Cove. There is currently a bench and a trash can on that site. Both Stinn and Graves would like to see it renovated when funding is available.

Eastlake restaurant notes: Super Bowl parties, U District Food Bank benefit

UNIVERSITY DISTRICT FOOD BANK: The Neighborhood Grills, which include the Eastlake Bar and Grill, will be sponsoring their 10th annual benefit dinner for the University District Food Bank from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

[Full disclosure: I volunteer for the food bank.]

Go out to eat at the Eastlake Bar and Grill (or its sister restaurant, the Green Lake Bar and Grill) during the benefit dinner hours and, at a minimum, 50 percent of the cost of your meal will be donated to the food bank. Order off the special menu and 66 percent of the cost will go to the food bank. The goal is to raise $6,000, which would cover half of what the food bank will spend on food purchases in February.

The University District Food Bank serves Eastlake and northeast Seattle. Last year was their busiest yet, with 55,000 customer visits and 2.3 million pounds of food provided.

If you can't go out to dinner on Wednesday, you can donate to the food bank on their website.
