CVPD seeks help in locating suspects in stabbing at the Chula Vista Sports Bar located at 1073 Third Avenue.

Chula Vista Police Officers were called to the Chula Vista Sports Bar, located at 1073 Third Avenue, just before midnight on Sunday, August 22, 2010.

The 27-year old off-duty bar manager became involved in an argument with 4 customers described by witnesses as 3 Hispanic male adults and a Hispanic female adult.

The argument continued into the parking lot at the rear of the bar. One of the three Hispanic male adults stabbed the bar manager at least 3 times, once in the stomach and twice in the back. The suspects then vandalized the victim’s car, parked in the lot. All 4 suspects fled in an older white Nissan Maxima.

Emergency responders transported the stabbing victim to the hospital for treatment of serious wounds. CVPD Detectives were called to the scene and are investigating. The suspects remain at large.

Anyone who has information related to the stabbing incident is encouraged to call the Chula Vista Police Department at (619) 691-5151.

A rare World War II plane that has been sitting at the bottom of Lower Otay Reservoir for more than 65 years was raised today.

For over 60 years, the Navy SB2C-4 Helldiver sat about 90 feet below the surface of the lake just East of the Arco Olympic Training Center near Eastlake, (Chula Vista) California.

In February 2009 Duane Johnson was out on his boat looking for bass when he noticed a strange object on his fish finder.

“We saw what looked like a two by four or something… something wasn’t right,” Johnson said. “As I’m looking at the picture more I see a tail on it.”

After a year and a half of investigations, former Navy Capt. Bob Rasmussen is overseeing the recovery project that he only dreamed of. He’s the director of the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Fla.

“There are only three or four SB2C Helldivers in existence anywhere and this is one of them,” said Rasmussen.

E.D. Frazar was forced to ditch the Helldiver in Lower Otay Lake on May 28, 1945 when the engine failed. He and Army gunner Joseph Metz swam safely to shore.

“When they were coming in over the lake, they were on a target run and the engine blew up, so they had to ditch because they weren’t high enough to bail out,” according to Joseph Metz’ son Jim.

Dick Frazar, the pilot’s son, flew his own single-engine plane from Texas to witness the event. “It’s not about my dad, it’s about the heritage and the legacy of our country. The fact that the aircraft is being recovered is really cool.”

The plane’s ultimate destination will be at the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, Florida.

There will be a public meeting this Friday about the 300MW natural gas fired power plant proposed on public parkland in the Otay Valley Regional Park.

Date: 8/20/2010
Time: 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Location: Montgomery-Waller Recreation Center, 3020 Coronado Ave., San Diego

Some feel this project is being overshadowed by the controversial Sunrise Powerlink and the shutting down of the South Bay Power Plant, and is thus slipping under the community’s radar.

The need for additional power is not in contention, but some are concerned about this plant’s impact on a protected habitat.

Pio Pico Energy Center, LLC, (PPEC) submitted an Application for Certification (AFC) to the California Energy Commission (CAEC) on June 30. With a maximum capacity of 4,000 hours per year, the application states that this plant directly satisfies San Diego’s area demand for peaking and load-shaping generation.

The generating facility would utilize three General Electric (GE) LMS100 natural gas-fired, combustion turbine generators (CTGs). A new substation to be built on the project site would interconnect to two 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission lines located within 1,500 feet of the PPEC.

There are many questions about what the impacts will be to habitat, wildlife, the Otay Lakes County Park, future trail connections and mitigation.

Here is a list of unanswered questions about this project:
-How much smog would this power plant produce?
-How will air quality impacts be mitigated?
-How much mercury would this power plant produce?
-How tall will the smoke stacks be? What will the visual impacts be to the park?
-“This project contains a property purchase of equal or greater habitat value adding 16.5 acres adjacent to the park. Requirements include a set of open space parcels of at least 14 acres near the park to be preserved.” San Diego News Room, 8/18/10
-Where will mitigation be done and at what ratio?
-In the above mentioned article, it was said that PPEC has potential to replace some of the nearly $3 million in average annual revenue from the South Bay Plant, and will be reinvested in providing local public services.
-What would these “local public services” be?
-What is the total amount of revenue expected from this power plant? How much of that will be going back into the park?
-What will the impacts be on future trail connections and the Otay Lakes County Park?

When someone’s motto is “the only easy day is yesterday its probably a good indicator of how they look at life.

That motto happens to belong to the Navy SEALs. The U.S National Field Hockey Team had the opportunity to live that motto with the SEALs, military experts with the toughest training in the world. Their endurance and willpower was put to the test with some of our military’s finest.

“It was our first time out there, and it was tough…to say the least,” said striker Katie Evans, “They taught us a lot about teamwork. It was hard, but a lot of what they do applies to our team too. I think we came away with a lot of good lessons and advice from them.”
