Thunderhawks Earn First District Title East Boys Advance to Sweet Sixteen!

The Lakota East boy's basketball team proved that "the third time is not always the charm" defeating Princeton one more time in route to claiming their programs first District Championship. The Hawks 48-36 victory over the Vikings propels them to the Division 1 OHSAA Regional Semi-Final game on Thursday in Columbus. The title matchup between Princeton and East was a familiar battle between two school's who knew each other very well.

"It was like a league game," said East head coach Wally Vickers. "Princeton certainly was motivated by the revenge factor. The mental and physical toughness of our players was key to us winning."

In previous meetings between the two schools Princeton had outrebounded the Hawks. Coach Vickers challenged his players to hit the boards and it showed. East held a 33-21 advantage in the final rebounding stats. The Vikings led most of the first half and into the third quarter. Jalen Goodwin's back-to-back treys gave East their first lead late in the quarter. East struggled from the line early on (4-12 at one point), but made 10-12 charity throws in the final 3:20 to clinch the win.

RJ Leppert's seven fourth quarter points added to his game high total of 15 to lead East. Jalen Goodwin scored 12 second half points. Leppert had a double-double also grapping 11 carooms. Brian Evans also had double figure rebounds with 10.
The Thunderhawks (23-1) will play fifth-ranked Westerville South (23-1) in a regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Columbus Fairgrounds Coliseum. This will be the 2nd time Coach Vickers has been at the coaching helm for a regional semi-final contest (1998-99 Hilliard Darby).

"Westerville is a team a lot like us," said Vickers. "They like to pressure the ball and play great defense. They have great coaching too. We will have to play our best to advance."
The Thunderhawks faced Pickerington North (20-5) in the Regional Finals on Friday, March 11th at Otterbein College. On the line was a trip to the State Final Four. East entered the game with an overall record of 19-5. The Lady Hawks had an amazing season but was never able to get a lead in this one falling by a final score of 52-40 and finishing as Regional Runnerup.

The Panthers got off to a fast 10-3 start in the first 5 minutes of the game. East struggled with turnovers and missed opportunities at the foul line to fall behind by a score of 14-8 at the end of the quarter. North stretched their lead to 13 with less than two minutes left in the half. Turnovers and foul troubles plagued the Lady Hawks in the 1st half, while Pickerinton made layups. East went on a 7-0 run as time ran out in the first with the Hawks down 27-21.

North maintained a 6-8 point margin most of the 3rd quarter. PN led 36-27 going to the fourth. It was 40-33 with 5 left in the 4th when the Panthers spread it out on offense and made East chase them. Pickerington completed free throws as East fouled. With 3:11 left East found themselves down by 11. Time began to run out on the Lady Hawks and their dream of a Final 4 berth.

The Thunderhawks lose only one player to graduation and will for sure be back next year with a senior laden team and another run at a state title.

Congratulations to the players and coaches on a season to remember!
The Lakota East Girl's Baskeball team upset Reynoldsburg High School by a score of 46-44 in the Regional Semi-Finals on Tuesday night sending them to Friday's Regional Finals with an opportunity to go to the State Final Four. East is now one of eight Division 1 girls basketball teams remaining in the postseason tourney.

Reynoldsburg was the No. 5 ranked team in the state coming into the contest. The Lady Hawks used a combination of defense, rebounding and clutch shooting to defeat the Raiders at Otterbein College. In the early going East fell behind 19-4 before coming all the way back and leading at the half by a score of 27-24.

The game came down to the final few possessions to determine who would advance. Reynoldsburg had possession at midcourt and trailed by one point, 45-44, with 39.1 seconds left to play. But that scoring attempt failed when East's Imani Outlaw stole the ball and was fouled 18 seconds later. Outlaw hit the first free throw, but missed the second. Reynoldsburg sophomore guard Yamonie Jenkins got off a 3-point try from the right corner, but the ball bounced off the rim and Lakota East rebounded it as time ran out.

East outrebounded Reynoldsburg 43-29, and 28 of those were defensive boards. Molly Blomer led everybody with nine rebounds, Wyckoff finished with eight (12 points) and Alyssa Grevenkamp was next with seven. Blomer also had 10 ponts.

East will return to Otterbein University's Rike Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the regional finals to face Pickerington North, which defeated Columbus Northland 58-50 in Tuesday's second game.

Pickerington was a No. 5 seed coming out of the Columbus Powell District. The Panthers (20-5) last appeared in the State Final Four in 2007. Lakota East will be playing in their first Regional Championship game in the school's basketball history.

East Sends Off Our State Qualified Wrestlers

On Thursday,3/3/11, Lakota East High School held a Send-Off for the State Qualified Wrestlers. Our Thunderhawks will compete in Columbus starting on Thursday! The athletes qualifying are:

Austin Daly (So., 103 lbs.) lost in round 1 on some very controversial calls. He made no excuses and did not waist time feeling sorry for himself. Austin went on to win 5 straight matches (3 of which were over some of the state's top ranked wrestlers with the last being over Noble-Lebanon who placed 8th at State last year) to place 3rd and qualify for State.

Ryan Miller (Sr., 130 lbs.) has been a strong State contender for 3 straight years, but has fallen short each of those years. This year, Ryan won his first round match, but lost in the Quarterfinals by 2 pts. to the eventual champion. He was determined to not fall short again this year--his final year. Ryan rattled off 4 straight wins to place 3rd and become a State Qualifier. In order to qualify for State, he had to defeat Zeigler (Moeller) who had already defeated him twice this season. Ryan made sure it would not happen 3 times in a row and won by a score of 5-4. He then dominated Nick Bloch (Lakota West) for the 5th time this season and a 3rd place finish by a score of 10-4.

Justin Brown (So., 119 lbs.), who wrestled on the Freshman Team as of last year, has had an amazing 3 weeks. Two weeks ago, he placed in his first varsity tournament (GMC-3rd). A week later, he placed at his second varsity tournament (Sectional-2nd). This weekend, Justin lost a controversial first round match. Like Austin, he did not sulk. He came back strong winning 3 matches in a row. In the consolation semifinals (that match to qualify for state), he lost a tough 8-4 decision to Parrott (Kettering Fairmont) who pinned him earlier in the season. Justin then bounced back and won his match for 5th place and a State Alternate position to his opponent from Fairfield by a score of 7-6.
Good Luck at State!!!
The Thunderhawks brought a program record 13 wrestlers and 1 alternate to the District Championships this past weekend at Fairfield H.S. The top 4 wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the State Championships this coming March 3rd-5th. At the end of day one of competition, East had 11 of the 13 wrestlers still competing. However, all 11 were in the consolation bracket. This means that they were all 1 loss away from elimination. The Thunderhawks came out on fire on day 2 and wrestled with a ton of heart.

Justin then bounced back and won his match for 5th place and a State Alternate position to his opponent from Fairfield by a score of 7-6.

Four other Thunderhawks came extremely close to placing in the top 6. These four were all one win away from placing. In the match that would have placed them Eric Sullivan (Jr., 135 lbs.) lost a tough 1-0 decision, Taft Maness lost a tough 5-3 decision., Jacob Burton (So., 171 lbs.) lost a 12-4 decision, and Tyler Ray lost a 5-3 decision. All of these wrestlers were 2-2 on the event. Other wrestlers who won a match and scored team points for the Hawks were Jacob Landers (Jr., 112 lbs.), Shane Jenkins (Jr., 125 lbs.), Neema Mohammadi (Sr., 140 lbs.), and Tim Bowman (Jr., 285 lbs.). All wrestlers involved gained a great deal of experience that will help them next season.

Record Breaking Weekend at Sectionals for East Wrestlers

This past weekend, the Hawks set a new program record by qualifying 13 of 14 wrestlers to Districts, with the 14th qualifying as an alternate. This is the second highest number of qualifiers of any school in the District Championships. East placed 3rd as a team behind #1 Moeller and #2 Mason.

Tyle Ray (189) captured his first Sectional Championship this weekend by defeating Jerry Thornberry (Moeller) by a score of 5-4. The great thing about this victory is that Thornberry pinned Tyler at the Coaches Classic early in the season and then defeated Tyler by 7 pts. two weeks ago in the dual. That's improvement!! Tyler has now etched his name on two East Wrestling Awards Boards and it seems that he is shooting for more this coming weekend!!

Justin Brown (So., 119 lbs.) captured a 2nd place finish in the Sectional. Justin handedly beat Jacob Artrip (Mason) in the semi-finals (a wrestler that he narrowly beat in overtime two weeks ago in our dual). He then fell in the finals to one of the state's best wrestlers (Brian McVeigh-Moeller).

Ryan Miller (Sr., 130 lbs.) competed in his 3rd Sectional final and 4th District Qualification by placing 2nd overall. Ryan dropped a close 1 pt. decision to Tim Zeigler (Moeller). He will be looking to avenge that loss as he will be shooting for his first District Title this coming weekend.

Tim Bowman (Jr., 285 lbs.) placed 2nd and apperared in his first Sectional final. This is Tim's 3rd District Qualification. Tim avenged a loss from a week ago to Myers (Mason) in the semi-finals. He then fell to Caleb Denny (Moeller) in the finals.

Austin Daly (So., 103 lbs.) qualified for his second District Championship by placing 3rd. Austin battled illness all week and still competed very hard--losing only a 2 pt. decision in the semi-finals to Tyler Tepe (Moeller).

Jacob Landers (Jr., 112 lbs.) and Shane Jenkins (Jr., 125 lbs.) both placied 4th qualifying them for their first District Championships.

Eric Sullivan (Jr., 135 lbs.) has qualified for his first District Championship by placing 4th in a very competitive weight at Sectionals. Eric has proven that when he is on, he can beat the best wrestlers in our District.

Neema Mohammadi (Sr., 140 lbs.) qualified for his second District Championship by placing 3rd. Neema wrestled very tough; losing only a close decision in the Semi-finals to the eventual champ from Moeller.

Taft Maness (Jr., 152 lbs.) and Douglas Davenport (So., 160 lbs.) both placed 4th and qualified for their first District Championship. Taft has proven all year long that he can compete with the best kids in our District. Douglas is very athletic and is getting more acclimated with every match that he wrestles (he has not been in the varsity line-up all year).

Johnny Detherage (So., 215 lbs.) also qualified for his first District Championships by placing 4th. Johnny has not been in the varsity line-up all year due to injury, but is getting stronger and stronger with each match that he wrestles.

Jacob Burton (So., 171 lbs.) qualified for his first District Championships by placing 3rd. Jacob has proven all year long that he can compete with the best wrestlers in our District.

Daniel Helton (Sr., 145 lbs.) qualified for District as an Alternate by placing 5th in the Section. Daniel had an extremely tough draw at Sectional by pulling two of the better wrestlers in the District in the first two rounds.

The District Championship action will begin on 2/25 at 2:45 p.m. at Fairfield H.S. Quarterfinals and 1st Round Consolation will begin at 7 p.m. On 2/26, 2nd Round Consolations begin at 10 a.m. Semifinals and 3rd Round Consolation Matches will begin at approximately 12 p.m. Championship Finals will begin at 6 p.m.

Miller and Ray Capture GMC Championships Jim Lehman Named GMC Coach of the Year

<img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.eastthunderhawks.com/images/1011/wrestling_teampic.jpg"><br />
Lakota East matmen showed great improvement at Saturdays GMC Championships at Oak Hills. The Hawks placed fourth overall behind Mason, Lakota West and Fairfield. This years finish was the East wrestling programs best placing since the 2004-05 season when they also finished 4th. East put 3 in the finals (a first since 2003), had 2 GMC Champions (a first since 2004), and placed 7 wrestlers in this year's championship. <br />
<br />
Ryan Miller (Sr., 130 lbs.) captured his 2nd GMC Title with a dominating 1st period fall over Nick Bloch (Lakota West). Tyler Ray (Sr., 189 lbs.) not only captured his first GMC Title, but placed in his first varsity level event. He has made amazing strides this season and the sky is the limit for Tyler in the next couple of weeks. Austin Daly (So, 103 lbs.) was the 3rd East finalist falling 1 pt. short of capturing a title. Jacob Landers (Jr., 112 lbs.) placed at his first varsity level tournament by finishing in 3rd place. Justin Brown (So., 119 lbs.) also placed at his first varsity level event by finishing in 3rd place. Shane Jenkins placed at his first level tournament and finished in 4th place. Quite an accomplishment for these fine young men and hopefully now that they have had a taste of standing on the podium, they will continue to make it a habit. <br />
Tim Bowman (Jr., 285 lbs.) was East's 7th placewinner with a 3rd place finish at heavyweight. Eric Sullivan (Jr., 135 lbs.) and Neema Mohammadi (Sr., 140 lbs.) had two of the deepest weight classes in the tournament. Both competed very well, but fell just short of getting over the hump and placing. For complete GMC results click here . <br />
<br />
To cap the weekend off Lakota East head coach Jim Lehman was named the GMC Coach of the Year! <br />
<br />
Next up for the Hawks is the Sectional Championships at Moeller H.S. on Feb. 19th. Wrestling starts at 10 a.m. The top 4 wrestlers at each weight qualify for District Championships. The highest number of East District qualifiers was 10 (2002) and the Hawks will be looking to top that mark.

On Saturday, February 5th, the sold out crowd at the Mason-Lakota East boy's basketball got a special treat. Performing at halftime were a talented group of young ladies known as the Firecrackers. These young ladies from the Kings Local School District are a unique and entertaining group of 4th through 8th graders who coordinate intricate jump rope stunts to music and dance. They have performed their amazing jump rope skills for many universities, schools, and special events.
Junior High Student-Athletes Learn Leadership Skills

<img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.eastthunderhawks.com/images/1011/SALT.jpg"><br />
On Tuesday, February 8th, over 50 student-athletes from Hopewell and Liberty Junior Schools visited Lakota East High School for the Annual SALT Leadership Conference. <br />
<br />
The Lakota East Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) invited emerging student-athlete leaders to learn what it takes to be a Thunderhawk. Topics discussed were sportsmanship, integrity, positive attitude and the expectations of a leader. Senior John Brady spoke to the students about the importance of building friendships. Senior Mike Kitching spoke about the importance of working hard in all aspects of your life. <br />
<br />
The students were also treated to an inspirational speech by former Lakota basketball standout, Brooke Wyckoff, who was a 9-year veteran of the WNBA. Wyckoff is now an assistant coach with the #2 ranked East Girl's Basketball team. Her message to the students focused on how their attitude –not skill level-- can "make the difference" in their peformance and overall success in life. <br />
<br />
The students day also included a tour of Lakota East, lunch, and breakout sessions. Topics included sessions on diversity, the parents role in sportsmanship, expectations of being a Thunderhawk leader, and showing positive school spirit. At the close of their day all of the students had the opportunity to present their ideas about each topic. <br />
<br />

Hawks Fight Off the Vikings - East Boys Tie All-Time Win Record at 18-0

The Lakota East boy's basketball team defeated Princeton on Tuesday, February 8th by a score of 57-49 to claim their program's first outright GMC Championship. The same two schools shared the title in 2005. The Hawks continued their string of 18 straight victories with no loses and built a three game lead in the conference with two games remaining.

Tuesdays rematch at Princeton was nothing less than a dogfight for Coach Vickers Thunderhawks. The Vikings, playing on their home court before another capacity crowd, sought redemption from a season opening loss to the Thunderhawks. Princeton raced out to an early 11-5 lead in the 2nd quarter. Mark Minch came off the East bench to score six points and get the Hawks even. Senior R.J. Leppert sent the Hawks into half time with a 22-16 lead scoing the final six points of the quarter.

East built a 14-point advantage in the second half, but saw it fade when the Vikings mounted a furious come-back attempt. With 1:16 left in the game East had a 49-47 advantage. After Princeton missed an opportunity to take the lead, Michael Boyd scored on a layup while getting fouled. He missed the free throw, but Cameron Lee grabbed the offensive board and stuck it back in while getting fouled for a 53-47 edge with 38 seconds remaining and sealing the win.

Princeton outrebounded East 36-26, but the Hawks commited fewer turnovers and shot the ball better. Goodwin led all scorers with 15 points, including 11 in the second half. Boyd (seven assists, six rebounds) and R.J. Leppert (seven rebounds) scored 11 points apiece for East, which tied the single-season program record for wins and established a new Lakota all-time mark for most consecutive victories. The East victory wrestled the GMC Championship away from Princeton who owned the title for the past three years.

The Thuderhawks will face Colerain on Friday, February 11th. East will honor their six seniors that evening (Jalen Goodwin, RJ Leppert, Brian Evans, Jeff Cargill, Cameron Lee, and Michael Boyd).

East Takes Care of Business Against West

The annual East-West matchup is usually a "toss the records out" type of contest. The two teams had split the last 10 meetings, with three of the games decided by three points or less and two going to OT. Tuesday nights game between the two school district foes was a lopsided affair with East establishing a new margin of victory in the annual series. The Thunderhawks 74-34 win, before a standing-room-only crowd at West, exceded East's 24-point spread in 1999-2000, also establishing a new all-time scoring mark in the rivalry.

The No.1 ranked Hawks outscored the host Firebirds 25-13 in the first quarter and it was all downhill from there. East continued to expand their lead and led at the half by a score of 36-17. Senior Cameron Lee led both teams in scoring with 17 points. R.J. Leppert added 12 and Mark Minch 10. Micheal Boyd dished out 5 assist while Allante Foster had 4 steals.

East is now 14-0 on the season, 8-0 in the GMC and currently the 7th ranked team in the states Division I polls. They will host Sycamore this Friday.

East Wrestling Season Remains Unblemished

The East Wrestling Team is quietly marching through their 2010-11 season with an impressive string of wins over quality opponents. This past weekend the Thunderhawks (#6) knocked off Oak Hills on Friday (59-13) and Fairfield on Saturday (32-26). In an exciting, down to the wire match against the #4 ranked Indians, both teams won 7 bouts. The difference maker was the bonus points that East picked up in the match. Falls were recored by Ryan Miller, Taft Maness, and Tim Bowman. Jacob Burton and Tyler Ray picked up bonus points by getting major decisions. Other decisions were recorded by Austin Daly and Justin Brown. Against Oak Hills pins for East were earned by Austin Daly, Ryan Miller, Eric Sullivan, Nathan McGuire, Jacob Burton, Tyler Ray, and Tim Bowman. Other wins were notched by Jacob Landers, Justin Brown, Shane Jenkins, and Neema Mohammadi.

After this weekends action, East extended its dual match unbeaten streak to 11 straight wins without a loss. Last season (09-10) the Hawks attained their best dual meet record in school history (14-5). This year, they are off to the best dual start in school history. Earlier this season East placed 8th in the prestigious SWOWCA Classic.

"This season we have a group of kids in the program that have wrestled for quite some years and are passionate about the sport," said East head coach Jim Lehman. "Our group of current sophomores are the first to go all the way through our very own East Kids Wrestling Club."

Over half of the East starting line-up put in 40-50 off-season matches this past spring and summer. They traveled the country competing in many national level tournaments and participating in top qauality training camps. According to Coach Lehman that hard work is paying dividends this season.

"We are very pleased at where we are at right now, but we have our sites set on improving every day and achieving our ultimate goal of having state qualifiers and state placewinners," said Lehman. "We have a lot of work ahead of us, but these boys are absolutely ready for that challenge. As I tell the boys--"it is like driving a car, we will check our rearview mirror once in a while, but we need to keep our eyes on the road ahead of us."

East Wins Overtime Thriller!

The Lakota East boy's basketball team escaped with a 69-65 overtime win against Mason on Tuesday night to remain unbeaten on the season. The Hawks showed character and poise in the extra session going on a 8-0 run after the Comets had tied the game with 7 seconds remaining in regulation.

The very tight contest saw both teams gain and lose big momentum swings. East built a 14 point lead in the early going of the contest only to see it evaporate late in the 2nd quarter. Mason took a 7 point lead in the thrid quarter sending their raucous "black hole" student section into a frenzy. Midway through the fourth quarter the Hawks went on a 8-0 run and returned to the consistent team play that has produced 12 straight wins (ties a team record). East also produced a big fan turnout which went ballistic when the Hawks came all the way back and grap a 53-50 lead late in the final frame, before the Comets sent it to OT.

Michael Boyd had a career night with 20 points and 8 rebounds. His six steals were key in the East come-back. RJ Leppert's 10 fourth quarter points also helped East regain the lead. Leppert finished with 12 points and four steals, while Jalen Goodwin (11 points) and junior Allante Foster (eight points, nine rebounds, four steals) also had major contributions.

The win for the Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak to Mason. The two schools will meet again at East on Feb. 1st. Next up the Thunderhawks will host Oak Hills on Friday, Jan. 21st.

Thunderhawk Basketball Programs Excel At Big Showcase Venues

                The Lakota East boy's and girl's basketball teams participated in prestigious high school showcase events this past weekend with both earning impressive wins.

The boy's team took their annual trip to Dayton for the Flyin to the Hoop showcase on Monday, January 17th. Their opponent was Lee, Alabama (16-6), last years Division 5 defending State Champs.

The Hawks used their relentless defensive pressure and transition offense to send the Generals spinning to a 81-59 loss. The 81-point offensive effort marked East's highest scoring output on the season. Five Thunderhawk players scored in double figures; Michael Boyd 14, Stedman Lowry 13, Mark Minch 12, RJ Leppert and Allante Foster both had 10.

The boy's put their undefeated 11-0 record on the line when they face a tough road test against Mason (9-2 overall, 4-1 in the Greater Miami Conference) Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m. Lakota East is currently in first place in the GMC, with a #1 city ranking and #10 ranking in the state.

The Lady Hawks played Hathaway Brown in the prestigious Classic in the Country Showcase in Berlin, Ohio on Sunday, Jan. 16th. The Thunderhawks made a big splash at the tourney by defeating the Division II two-time defending State Champs by a score of 52-37.

Hathaway was heavily favored, but East proved to be the better team this night. East trailed 25-22 at halftime, but outscored Hathaway-Brown 30-12 in the second half to win going away. The girls played great team D holding a State power house to 37 points. Offensively, East had major contributions from several players. Leading the way was Imani Outlaw with a career high 19 points. Whitney Wyckoff scored 14 pts and grabbed 10 rebounds. Alysaa Grevenkamp was just one point shy of a double-double with 9 points and 10 bounds. Molly Blomer and Bernice Satterwhite each had a combined 12 points and 10 carooms.

East's record improves to 10-2 overall with a #3 ranking in the city polls. The Hawks have two big games this coming week. On Wednesday they host the top ranked and undefeated Princeton Vikings. On Saturday they visit district rival Lakota West.

<img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.eastthunderhawks.com/images/1011/wrestling_teampic.jpg"><br />
The Thunderhawks traveled to Cleveland this past December 28th and 29th to compete in the Brecksville Holiday Invitational. This tournament is the oldest and one of the toughest high school wrestling tournaments in the country. The 45 team field included 3 state championship teams and 14 other schools that finished in the top 10 in their respective states. Last year, the Hawks finished in 24th place with 59 points. Many of those points were claimed by Pedro Powell who finished in 3rd place. <br />
<br />
This year, the Hawks did not have any individual placewinners, but had 3 wrestlers (Austin Daly, Ryan Miller, and Tim Bowman) who were all one win from placing. The team finished in 34th place with 42.5 pts. The rest of the team competed very hard, with the majority of the line-up losing some extremely close matches to some top seeded individuals. <br />

Hawks Knock Off Dayton's No. 1 Ranked Team

<img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.eastthunderhawks.com/images/1011/varsity_teampic2.jpg"><br />
The Lakota East boy's basketball team are proving they are the "real deal" and a team to be reckoned with after recently winnning the Hilton Head tourney and now upseting Dayton's #1 ranked team, the Wayne Warriors. The Hawks went into a hostile environment at Wayne High School on Tuesday night December 28th, with both teams looking to keep their season records unblemished. East came away with an impressive 66-58 victory to remain undefeated on the young season at 6-0. <br />
<br />
In a physcial contest with a lot of fouls the game saw no margin wider than five points until the final minute, Wayne led 12-9 after the first quarter, but East took a 27-25 advantage at halftime. Leading 42-41 entering the fourth quarter, Wayne took a 56-55 lead with 1:28 left on the fourth straight point from Waynes Marcus Crider. East responded with a three-point play by senior Jalen Goodwin that started a game-ending 11-2 run as Wayne went 1-of-4 from the floor with two turnovers in that stretch. <br />
<br />
Senior Michael Boyd led East in scoring with 14 points. Jalen Goodwin added 11 while Allante Foster contributed 10. Cameron Lee grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 3 assists along with 7 points. The Hawk defense held Michigan State recruit Travis Trice to only 15 points and Providence signee Marcus Crider to 9 points. <br />
<br />
East returns to GMC action on Tuesday, January 4th when they visit Colerain.

Thunderhawks Complete Season Opening Upset Over Princeton

<img alt="" border="0" src="http://www.eastthunderhawks.com/images/1011/varsity_teampic2.jpg"><br />
The Lakota East boys basketball team opened their 2010-11 campaign with a a mild shocker on Tuesday, Dec. 7th by defeating the three-time GMC defending champs by a score of 54-48 at the Hawks Nest. The city rankings probably don't mean much this early in the season, but it was a big win for the Hawks basketball program. The last time East defeated Princeton was in the "James Dews era", five years ago on 12/9/05. <br />
<br />
East came back from a 11-point deficit to rally in the 4th quarter behind a clutch game-tying basket by RJ Leppert with 3 minutes remaing to put East ahead for good at 50-48. Crucial free throw shooting by Michael Boyd and Cameron Lee in the final minutes and a stout Lakota East defense held the Vikes scoreless for almost the last minutes of the game keying the win. <br />
<br />
The Thunderhawks (1-0) got a game-high 14 points from senior Mike Boyd and 11 from senior Jalen Goodwin. Seniors Cameron Lee and R.J. Leppert added nine points apiece. Boyd also added 4 steals while Leppert pulled down 9 carooms. Jeff Cargill added 8 rebounds. <br />
<br />
Princeton (1-1) led by as many as 11 (42-31) late in the third quarter, and by 10 at 45-35. But the Thunderhawks started chipping away. Back-to-back baskets by Jeff Cargill and Goodwin was followed by Stedman Lowry's 3-pointer from the left wing, making it 47-42 with 5:21 to go. <br />
<br />
East entertains Hamilton on Friday night, Dec. 10.

Abbey Cramer Commits to the Bearcats

Lakota East senior, Abbey Cramer, will swim Division 1 next year for the University of Cincinnati. Cramer, a swimming standout for the Thunderhawks, held an informal media signing on Tuesday at the high school. Abbey narrowed her decision to three schools; UC, Ball State and Ohio State before making the final nod to the Big East Bearcats.

"I felt like UC had a tight hold on their sprint program," said Cramer. "UC sprinter Josh Snyder recently won the NCAA 50 free and has been very successful. He was a lot like me not getting started in the swim program till later on. The UC head coach also didn't start out until later in his high school years. All of these reasons and more were big factors in my decision." UC's strong Nursing program was also a big consideration in Abbey's career pursuits.

Cramer holds Lakota East all-time swim records in the 50 and 100 free. Last season she was a state qualifer in the 50 free as well as the 200 free relay event with a goal on returning to Canton again this year. She also earned 2nd and 3rd Team All-GMC recognition in the 50 and 100 free last season. She was a USA Sectional qualifier for her club team the Mason Manarays. Not only is Abbey a tremendous swimmer, her extra curricular activities at Lakota East include particiaption in the J.Kyle Braid and Salt student leadership programs.

"Abbey will have great success at UC," said East head coach Dennis Beck. "With her dedication and hard work ethic I expect she will continue to just get faster."

"She is one of the most naturally gifted athletes I have ever worked with," said Manaray coach Todd Billhimer. "I'm looking forward to her development at UC."

Pictured with Abbey are her parents, Susan and Joe, along with coaches Billhimer (left) and Dennis Beck (right).

Girl's Tennis Earns First GMC Championship

                The Lakota East Girls Tennis team captured the 2010 GMC Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday, October 2nd at Mason. The Lady Hawks won both the regular season and tournament giving them their first outright league championship.

East worked their way through the first day of matches qualifying three to the finals; 1st singles Carolyn Pitman, 2nd singles Taylor Holden and 2nd doubles Sofey Fugate & Leeah Floyd. Freshman Haley Harrison, (Katie Strahan's replacement at 3rd singles due to injury), had a tough road losing to the 4th seed, Nanki Hura from Sycamore. Harrison moved on to the backdraw defeating players from Fairfield and Hamilton to qualify for Saturday's match against Colerain's Megan Grender in hopes of a 5th place finish. Thunderhawks 1st doubles team, Samar Sheriff & Taylor Stephens, won their 1st round match versus Fairfield but were faced with a rematch with a very strong and experienced team from Sycamore, Martin & Fonseca. The loss against Sycamore put the duo in the 3rd/4th Place match versus Lakota West's McNear & Dunn. The first day of the tournament ended with a victory for Sheriff & Stephens who earned a 3rd place finish at 2nd doubles in the GMC. After the first day of competition there was hope for a East GMC title.

Saturday's matches started with a win for Lakota East as Haley Harrison defeated Colerain's Grender in a proset 8-4 earning 5th place. Next off the courts with a solid victory and a 1st place championship at 2nd singles was Taylor Holden defeating West's Nicole Soutar 6-2, 6-0. Holden's victory heightened her teammates hopes that they just might achieve the Thunderhawks first GMC title for the women's tennis program. Carolyn Pitman gave a valiant effort in the 1st singles finals match but fell to West's Brooke Broda. The Thunderhawks would need a win in the finals of the 2nd doubles court. It took three sets but in the last match of the day East's Fugate & Floyd were victorious over another talented Sycamore doubles team defeating Dosani & Miller 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-2 earning the 1st place championship at 2nd doubles and giving East the GMC title.

"It's been a tremendous season," said East Head Coach Karen Barnes. "Since early August the team has felt the GMC championship could be a possibility and they've worked hard individually and as a team to make it a reality."

Barnes received the GMC Coach of the Year honor as she guided the Thunderhawks to a 16-1 record overall and 9-0 regular season confererce mark. Carolyn Pittman earned the GMC Player of the Year awrd. Taylor Holden, Sofey Fugate and Leeah Floyd all received 1st Team All-GMC recognition.

"With five seniors on the team it makes the championship even more special, said Barnes. "I couldn't be more proud or happier for all the girls who contributed during the season and during the tournament to make this happen."

Lakota West and Sycamore finished tied for 2nd followed by a fourth place for Mason. East will be back in action at the Sectional Tournament at Mason on Wednesday, October 6th.

Come From Behind Hawks Capture GMC Championship

                The Lakota East boys' golf team roared from behind at the 2nd day of the conference tournament on Thursday to win the 2010 Boys GMC Golf Championship. With their fallen teammate Jordan Day on their minds and in their hearts, the Thunderhawks won an inspirational victory capturing their third league title in the past five years. East won back-to-back titles in 2006 and 2007.

"I am so proud of how they have responded to our tragic loss (Jordan Day) all year," said East Coach Jeff Combs. "The guys were calm, positive and confident the entire round which is what made the difference."

East began the day tied for fourth, six-srokes behind first-place teams Lakota West and Middletown. The golfing Hawks (623) put up a team total score of 309 on the final day, enough to edge out 2nd place Mason (626) by 3 strokes. Lakota West (627) finished third and Middletown (629) placed fourth.

East junior Mike Goldman posted the second-best score of the day with a 73 and finished with a total of 154 for the tourney. Sophomore Wyatt Frazier finished tied for fourth place along with his teammate Goldman. Lakota East junior Ben Gallow finished in a tie for eighth place. Rounding out the two-day East scoring were, Tyler Gibbons 160, Tyler Overberg 163, and Anthony Fiorenza 169.

"Mikey Goldman's round was spectacular yesterday on a day that didn't see many scores below 80---and only 1 below his 73," said Combs. "Tyler Overberg finished about an hour before the others with a 79 which really pumped up the guys on the course."

Wyatt Frazier, Ben Gallow, Tyler Gibbons and Mike Goldman (all underclassman) recieved 1st team All-GMC honors. Tyler Overberg was a 2nd team All-GMC pick. Head Coach Jeff Combs was named the GMC Coach of the Year for the third time in his career.

"In all my years of coaching, I have never been more proud of a team's performance," said Combs. "The guys had Jordan on their minds, and in their hearts all day and I think it carried them through the pressure."

East Alum Khetag Pliev Places 7 th in 2010 World Championships

<img alt=" border="0" src="http://www.eastthunderhawks.com/images/1011/khetag.jpg">When Khetag Pliev was a senior at Lakota East High School in 2002, he had compiled a very impressive resume: 2 State Championships, USA Cadet and Junior National Freestyle Championships, and a NWCA Seniors National Championship. He was also chosen as the 2002 Larosa's Male Athlete of the Year. Khetag was not your typical high school wrestler. He did not jump up and down, leap into his coach's arms, or pump his fists as he won his numerous state and national championships. At that time, many people misunderstood his quiet, humble, nonchalant personality for someone that did not care. However, they were nothing but further from the truth. He cared very much, but he constantly had his sights set on bigger and better things. As a young athlete, he had a goal of winning a World and Olympic Title. Former East Head Coach, Bob Latessa, was quoted as saying that “Khetag's goal of becoming an Olympic Gold Medalist was a very realistic one.” At the age of 26, Khetag is getting closer and closer to meeting his ultimate goals. This past September 9-12, Khetag competed in his 2 nd Men's Freestyle World Championship in Moscow, Russia. Last year, he had a disappointing 0-1 finish at the championships. He made better on that performance this year. Khetag was 2-2 in this year's event (which placed him 7 th ). In the first round, Khetag defeated Antans Azarevics (Lettonie) by a score of 4-1, 2-0. In the second round of competition, Khetag was defeated by Khetag Gazyumov (Azerbaijan) by a score of 0-3, 1-6. Gazyumov went on to win the World Championship Title. In his first wrestleback, Khetag defeated Aristide Diatta (Senegal) by fall in the first period. In his next match, he was defeated by Ruslan Sheikhau (Belarus) by a score of 0-1, 0-1. Sheikhau ended up placing 5 th . This is not where Khetag would like to have finished, but it seems that he is getting closer to reaching his ultimate goals of winning World and Olympic titles.
