Are You Using Your Time And Talent?

Are you using your time and talent well? Have you targeted those skills you have and used them to your very best advantage?

One of my favorite motivational speakers, Zig Ziegler tells a story about one such man who did not. There are lessons to be learned for anyone who is serious about succeeding in their work on the internet.

For the sake of brevity I will paraphrase much of the story about a man who failed to use his time and talent well.

He tells of a man who lived in a small southern community and was well-known and respected in the area.

One day he was trading at the local general store purchasing some food and other items. The clerk had been washing some vegetables and her hands were still wet when the customer gave her a bright, new twenty-dollar bill.

She noticed that some of the green ink came off on her hands, and just for a moment she wondered if it might be counterfeit. She had known the man well for many years and dismissed the very foolish idea from her mind.

But later after he had left, her concern grew and she called in the local sheriff to examine the money. They decided to pay a visit to the man's house. There they discovered in the attic his equipment for making counterfeit money.

There was an easel, some paint brushes and a can of green paint. This man was a brilliant artist who was hand painting twenty-dollar bills so well that they could be passed undetected unless the receiver had wet hands.

They also discovered several beautiful paintings in the house that were later sold for very large amounts of money at auction following the conviction of the counterfeiter.

The paradox is that it took him about the same time and effort to produce one of these valuable paintings as it did to make one fake twenty-dollar bill.

So as you can see he could have been a very successful artist if he had only used his time and talent well.

It is my hope that this article will give you pause to assess your use of time and talent as you work on line. Use your talents and develop those other skills you need by reading, studying and practicing.

How to Plan & manage a Fundraising Event!

Staging a special event is a reliable method for fundraising and a good way to publicize your organization and your cause. This article contains some practical advice for event planning, promotion and management.

1. Decide on the Right Type of Special Event

There are several types of special events. Each has its own purpose and can be very effective if used for that purpose. Confusing the type of event can result in disaster. There are fundraising events, in other words, events that are run to make a profit for the organization. People pay to attend, buy something at the event, or gather pledges and then participate in the event. Similar to these types of events are what is often called third party events. These events are staged by someone or some organization other than the charity for the benefit of a charity. Another form of event is used for cultivation of prospects, recognition of donors or volunteers and to make announcements, such as the launch of a campaign. The purpose of this type of event is not to raise money at the event but to publicize the charity and inform potential donors about something new, with the intention that they will follow-up with a donation.

2. Make Appropriate Decisions Based on Type of Event

If you are running a fundraising event, you need to decide how you will make money with the event. This may seem obvious, but it is sometimes overlooked. Ask yourself if the funds will come from admission tickets, sponsors, sales of items in additional to the admission cost, a silent or live auction, door prizes, and so on. For third party events take these things into consideration. If you are working on the charity side, make sure that you have an understanding of what your role will be. It is easy to get asked to do more than your organization may have the resources to do. If you are the third party, understand how exactly how your event will benefit the charity. If the main purpose of your event is to make announcements and cultivate prospects, you will make more if you offer something for free and make the request for a donation later. Pay attention to how the media are managed at the event

3. Planning the Event

Cover the basics first – secure the venue, have enough food and drinks, book entertainment or speakers, look after details like parking, coat check, security, and washrooms. Prepare a budget based on these basics then adjust as more things are added or sponsors are secured. Prepare a detailed checklist of everything you will need – invitations, RSVP, who orders what and do it well in advance. Make a timeline working back from the day of the event and mark the deadlines for getting invitations out, placing ads in media, payments of deposits, to suppliers and entertainers, and when the RSVP must be received. Walk through the venue and imagine how people will move as they come to the event. Anticipate people’s needs and if at all possible, don’t have people waiting in lines at any time, get them a drink ASAP, and get them seated or involved.

Double-check everything.

4. Promoting Your Event

Brand your event. Even if it is a relatively small event, a unique name, slogan and logo can help to sell the event. Consider building a special website for the event, with a link from your organization’s website. A unique URL can help to brand the event and this can also make tracking registrations easier. If you are sending invitations to your mailing list, usually about six weeks to a month is an appropriate time to mail invitations. Use email lists and emails invitations and have people register for the event on your website. If the event is open to the public, advertise in the media, using the media that will target your audience. As an example, if your event is upscale, advertise in business media or if your event is family oriented, advertise in community newsletters. Issue press releases when the date of the event is set, about a week before the event and just after the event.

5. The Day of the Event

Rehearse the program – time speakers and make sure they know where to stand and what to say. Test the audiovisual equipment and have backup systems in place. If you are doing something that requires some technical skill, like a video presentation or sound feeds for media, hire a technician to be on standby. Always have a contingency plan for bad weather, late speakers, and emergencies.

6. If You Are in Charge of the Event

Never forget that you are working. It can be easy to relax with a few drinks and get into the mood of the event, especially if things are going well. Never forget that you are working. Be prepared to deal with the unexpected. Keep reviews your checklist. Remember that key people - celebrity guests, speakers, and entertainers - want to be taken care of and told what to do. Never leave them alone or ask them to decide something. Meet people where they arrive, assign someone to be with them at all times and respond to whatever they request. The most common breakdowns at an event are poor venue (too small, inadequate parking, not enough washrooms), poor food service, a/v breakdowns, and key people who don’t show up or show up late. Try to anticipate these problems and solve them if they occur.

7. Wrap – up

Do a final accounting for the event as soon as possible. If a fundraising event, take all costs and revenue into account but also all take other benefits into account, such as an assessment of the value of the publicity you gained, new people you met and so on. If the event is for an announcement or donor cultivation, make sure you have follow-up planned – follow-up calls and letters to participants and to media. Get thank-you letters out to sponsors, suppliers and volunteers as soon as possible.

Advises Elms, “Don’t ever try to sell to the buyer what you think they need to own.” Users are already telling you what they want to buy — you just have to listen. These tools show you what consumers are saying they want and how they’re saying they want to find it. Tip 1 — Start Small.

Many of Johnston’s students are eager to dive in head first, ready to invest all their savings into overseas imports or shopping network returns. But Johnston discourages such risky moves for two reasons.

• They haven’t considered all the costs — the enormous minimum quantities that may be required, or the price of having their goods shipped from overseas, not to mention the incidental charges they may incur in the process.

EBay is a great tool for beginners just learning about online retail. There are several reasons why it’s a smart place to start:

• It’s quick, easy, and inexpensive.

• The traffic is built in, and the people that are seeing your listings are seeing them because they’re specifically searching for your type of product.

• It’s a good way to get exposed to the ins and outs of the business.

Tip 4 — There’s No Such Thing as “Get Rich Quick!”

Starting an e-business is just like starting any other business — it takes patience and persistence. Don’t expect to be magically rolling in money overnight. And don’t just jump at every “opportunity” that comes along, for fear of missing out. Research it first; if it sounds too good to be true — well, you know... Don’t Spam Your Ebay Customers

The big question is how do you keep in touch with your customers without being accused of spamming or just making them unhappy with all of your emails? There are a couple of easy ways of doing this while building a stronger relastionship with them.

The first way is by doing a series of follow-up emails to your customers. Here is how I have mine setup. First let me tell you that I use eBay’s Blackthrone auction porcessing software. It still has some bugs in it since it is new but I think it may be the best product overall. There are dozens of other services out there that do the same thing. Anyways, using some kind of auction processing software just makes life easier but you can do everything yourself.

I take every chance I get to document each step in the post auction process by notify my customer through email. I send out an email when payment is received, when I ship the item, I wait one week before telling them I posted feedback and two weeks after shipping I send out a survey to make sure the customer was happy.

This whole process keeps my name in front of them for almost one month. You will never get one complaint about spamming but just the opposite. Your customers will thank you for the great communications. Oh yea, I wait until Friday to send out the feedback and survey emails so they will get them just in time for the weekend auctions. Sending these out in the middle of the week won’t get that good of a response.

A hybrid car was NOT recently crowned as the 2009 Green Car of the year by America's Green Car Journal! Are hybrid cars just a fad? Is another form of power the "Real Green"..?

Yet these overpriced, misshapen things on wheels are touted as the answer to saving the environment. Maybe they will go the way of the "Pet Rock" for those old enough to remember it.

The car that got more points than the Hybrids, and took the crown, was none other than the Volkswagen Jetta TDI "clean diesel". No less than 9 experts from environmental and automotive backgrounds were impressed enough with its fuel economy, low emissions and strong performance to give it a big thumbs up.

Surprised.? Well, this TDI "clean diesel" version of the well known Jetta has been selling in North America since August last year.! The research and technology employed in advanced "clean diesel" engines means we can now drive "normal looking" cars and still leave a smaller carbon footprint on the environment.

Repair costs will also probably be a lot lower too. Have you seen all the electronics and extra motors in those hybrids.? Has anyone looked into whether or not the manufacture of Hybrids and their vast number of components, creates more carbon emissions than "normal car manufacturing" ? I'm sure we may be shocked at the answer.

Just a few techie specs on the Jetta then:
2.0 Liter 4 Cylinder TDI motor that produces 140 hp and it still manages to get 50mpg and meet the most stringent emission control standards, California's Tier II, Bin 5. . and all this with a quiet engine that gives you plenty of grunt when you need it.

Now, I'm not pushing VW's or saying you should avoid Hybrids. What I am saying is that when you are at the next car auction, maybe keep an eye out for some of the "clean diesel" powered cars as an alternative to the Hybrid.

It maybe another 12 months or more before you see these Jetta's coming through the lanes to bid on. But don't overlook it just because it is a diesel. Even at the repossessed and seized car auctions, you never know what will turn up.
