Recovery.org Tracks Stimulus Spending: Should Americans Spend or Save?

As Recovery.org tracks stimulus spending, the question is whether the average American should spend or save.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Americans' use of credit cards fell last May as more and more people lost jobs and were forced to tighten budgets.

By June, unemployment reached 9.5%, the highest in the last 25 years.

Not only credit card borrowing decreased. Bank loans fell, too, since banks became much stricter in all their consumer loan approval requirements. This is because loan delinquency has also been continuously rising.

Non-revolving credit has dropped, as well. This includes automobile and mobile-home loans.

In the first quarter of 2009, the total net worth of households was reported to have fallen by 2.6%. Even if the Obama administration's stimulus package has propped up Americans' income in May, people are still feeling the crunch and, as a result, are spending less and saving more than they have in the last 15 years.

There is concern that reduced borrowing and spending will further cripple the US economy since 70% of gross domestic product is made up of consumer spending.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't. It's a very difficult place to be in.

Changes being planned on Facebook will allow more efficiency in making money online. According to reports, Facebook will enable users to select who can see each new post. That means you can divide your friends into segments or niches and target each post to a specific segment or niche. You can therefore use your Facebook account to promote various products and services and promote all of them without alienating anyone.

Do you ever experience being annoyed by a barrage of promotional posts about things in which you have no interest at all? With too many of those from you, your Facebook friends just might block you altogether. The new Facebook tool will avoid this scenario. You can customize your promotions according to each specific group.

This is something that cannot be done on Twitter now. Once Facebook implements these changes, Twitter will hopefully follow suit.

Being Offline Decreases Earning Capacity

Due to heavy rains and lightning, we had a four hour brownout last night. Then when the power came back on we found out that the lightning had zapped our modem, as well. It was a 15 hour wait before someone finally came to replace our modem and bring us back online.

I realized that being offline drastically cuts one's earning capacity online. I couldn't do research for my writing, couldn't update my blogs, Twitter and Facebook. Well, I don't monetize Facebook but blogs and Twitter are among my marketing ventures online. Add to that my freelance writing assignments which I submit by email.

I can't live without an internet connection.

Most publishers have reported a drastic decrease in Google Adsense earnings in the past few months. This is predicted to continue in the coming months and is seen as a result of th global economic crisis. There are fewer advertisers and the cost per ad served has been lowered, as well.

This should not discourage bloggers from continuing with Adsense, though.

Of course, it would be prudent to add other possible sources of income online. But Adsense should not be totally scrapped from your list. Google, after all, is one of the more solid companies that should be able to weather this crisis.

All of us need to adjust to what is happening to the worldwide economy and just continue blogging and working onward.

New Single Family Houses Sales Continue to Slide Down

According to Mortgage News Daily, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau has reported that sales of new single family houses have dropped again in November 2007 at nine percent below the October rate. Builders' inventories have, therefore, been increasing. Ironically, average prices in November rose to $239,100 from $229,500 in October. Comparing yearly averages, the November 2006 median price was not far off at $240,100.

It seems that builders would rather offer other concessions instead of lowering their price. Usual add ons are appliance upgrades and financing terms.

Philippine Credit Card and Auto Loans Rise

Manila Bulletin Online reports that credit card receivables and auto loans in the Philippines have increased by 22.3 percent and 20 percent respectively in the first quarter of 2007 as compared to the first quarter of 2006.

That's a lot of credit purchases and a lot of cars.

Past due credit card receivables have decreased, though, to 14.2 percent in comparison with last quarter's 16.4 percent and last year's 20 percent ratio to total CCRs.

Good. This points to better credit management among consumers. Hopefully, the numbers will reveal even better discipline in the future.

The Philippines is a third world country. When personal budgets are tight, proper use of credit cards can be a big help. The downside is that credit cards could also be abused, leading to more debt.

I wish schools in the Philippines would also include personal finance management in the curriculum, from elementary to high school.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, 85% of of internet purchases are made using credit cards online.

The paper goes on to say that businesses should allow consumers to use credit cards or risk losing sales. This is reportedly true even for offline purchases. Up to 80% of impulse buying opportunities are lost when a business establishment does not accept credit cards.

If we look at this from the point of view of consumers, we can clearly see how our own credit cards can entrap us into unplanned spur-of-the-moment purchases, both online and offline.

So keep your credit cards hidden from your own eyes in the deep recesses of your wallet. Try to forget you have them, especially when you see that item you have long been lusting after. Keep in control and you won't have to regret it the morning after.

I would like to clarify that I do not have anything against using credit cards. In fact, I believe that credit cards are a big help in stretching our budget.

It is important, however, to know how to use your credit card wisely so as not to find yourself buried in debt.

1. Know your own budget. Know how much you can afford to spend each month. Allot a specific amount for credit card payments.

2. As soon as you get your card, take note of the cut-off date when your purchases will be totalled. Mark this on your calendar.

3. Also as soon as you get your card, take note of the deadline of monthly payments. Mark this more prominently on your calendar.

4. Monitor your credit card purchases and have a running balance. Make sure that you are within the budget you set for yourself. Total your purchases at the end of the cut-off date.

5. Pay your credit card purchases in full each month. This way you don't pay interest. You still get several weeks of credit and, if you plan your purchases well, these few weeks can already help you stretch your cash flow.

6. Take advantage of zero interest installment plans IF you cannot afford to buy the product in cash.

If you have the money, though, you will almost always get a good discount if you pay in cash.

The next best thing, for items that you really need right now, is the zero installment plan. Just make sure that you factor in the monthly payments in your monthly credit card budget.

7. Do not withdraw cash against your credit card except in serious emergencies. Cash advances have much higher interest.

8. If you find yourself unable to pay the full amount due, pay the highest amount you can afford to minimize penalty interest. As soon as you get some more cash, immediately pay off the balance. Remember that the longer you stay in debt, the higher you pay in interest.

If you use your credit card wisely, it can be a good financial tool rather than an instrument of immediate gratification with dire consequences.

US Consumers Are Becoming Wiser On Credit Use

The Chicago Tribune reports that Americans have borrowed less and paid more on their credit card debts in April.

Likewise, retail sales were said to have dipped and banks received less demand for consumer loans.

This is good news if it means more people are being more conscientious in their use of credit. If you're not careful, there are a lot of ways credit can bleed you dry.

Recently, I came across articles reminding consumers that withdrawing cash against one's credit card is a very expensive habit. If you look closely at the small print, you will see that doing so incurs even much higher interest than making your usual purchases.

Perhaps people have been alerted to these credit dangers by the recent spate of credit defaults, from credit card debts to housing loans. It's time to wake up and take stock of one's financial situation.

So do you really, really need to make that purchase on credit? Can you really afford it?

The Increase in Credit Card Minimum Payments Could Be Good News For You

When credit card companies increase their minimum payments, consumers howl in protest. When you look at the bigger picture, though, this could actually be a good thing.

The higher minimum payments cover interest, fees and a portion of the principal every month.

With the previous lower minimum payments, only the interest was covered and the debt period was basically extended. You feel like you're getting off easy but you end up paying much, much more than you actually borrowed. Sometimes, the debt even lasts for years.

There is a very real danger that credit card debt can push you into bankruptcy, especially if you persist in paying only the old low minimum payments. In fact, the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 orders credit card companies to inform consumers in monthly statements of how long they will remain in debt if they pay only the minimum required for their balance.

The new setup actually forces you to decrease your principal and shorten the life of your debt, freeing you earlier and with less interest.

But I can't afford a higher minimum payment monthly, you say. Then it's time to rethink your spending habits. The higher minimum payments will force you to take stock of what you can and cannot afford, and make the necessary adjustments before it's too late.

The higher minimum payments may even save your future.

Bad Loans Span the United States to India

According to the South Florida Business Journal, BankAtlantic Bancorp, Inc. announced a dive in its profits and a rise in bad loans and non-performing assets in its residential real estate development portfolio.

According to the Union Tribune, the biggest independent U.S. mortgage bank, Countrywide Financial Corp., also experienced a decrease in profits and an increase in losses from bad debts and payment defaults.

Even in India, banks are reeling from bad loans.

According to the Economic Times at Indiatimes.com, State Bank of India (SBI) chairman OP Bhatt warned that non-performing assets in home loans are growing and will most likely spill over to other segments such as small and medium enterprises.

Seems like debt problems are spanning the globe.
