Why Learn And Master Guitar Chords Scales And Arpeggios

Why learn and master guitar scales, chords and arpeggios? You need to do so for the purpose of mastering the guitar. A professional understanding of the guitar will not be possible without a complete understanding of the building blocks of guitar playing and application. In time, you will become aware of the fact that it is not via just one channel, but through many channels of guitar musicality that your total ability to know and apply the instrument will be greatly improved.

You need to learn and master guitar chords. Chords are a special and favorite subject of not just the guitar player, but also for the guitar music maker who desires to make chord progressions and great sounding music. The guitar improviser needs to understand chords to embellish them and to improvise over them in a way that will sound unique and within the musical framework being played over. It is important to have the proper instruction and guidance in learning guitar chords due to the fact that while there are many chord books, online diagrams, and other download programs giving you chords to play on the guitar, in reality, these do not provide what you need to master chords in a way that will make you a great player, music maker or an effective band member. You need guitar software that is high end and will get the job done for you.Learn and master guitar scales to be able to play lead guitar like all the guitar heroes that you admire from all of your favorite bands and artists of various styles.

Guitar scales will take you through a window of playing that is a full complement to your guitar chords. You may think that you don’t need to learn and master guitar scales because you either have no interest in becoming a blazing lead player or because you do not think that you will ever be able to realistically understand or obtain the ability to do so. But regardless of whether or not you can become a master of guitar scales for these reasons, you need to learn guitar scales because they are important even to melody ideas. As a music maker you want to have a grip upon, and knowing of, your guitar scales so you can make great music. Also your lead playing does not need to be fast and furious. It often won’t be of use to the music you are expressing anyway. And while you are thinking of all o
1000
f this you have to learn and master your guitar arpeggios to become a well rounded guitarist and to playing the things that you sometimes think are scales from various songs when in reality they are playing arpeggios. What you need to do is to check yourself into a guitar program that will give you the things like this that you need to become better at your craft. It can be difficult no matter what level of player you are, whether beginner, intermediate or some level of advanced as the time you put into learning the guitar and the money you spend on doing so, rarely gives you the results you desire. This is hardly surprising. Remember, it can be tough because the instrument is difficult to get a grip upon, and there are many options learning the guitar from a music college, to private lessons, to the “hokey dokey” world of online guitar learning and cheap program downloads. You can get the most incredible and quality level of guitar education available if you are willing to spend more than fifty bucks on your passion and you find the ultimate guitar software product that is guaranteed to take you there. There has been a guitar evolution in the learning field for students so they can really learn and master their guitar chords, scales and arpeggios.

Knowing how to choose the right guitar and how to identify a bad one, will save you from countless headaches, not to mention finger aches.

Acoustic guitar bodies come in basically the same hourglass shape, with some variations, but they do vary in size, color, wood-type, style, and extra features. You can even buy an acoustic guitar so small that fits into a hiking backpack.

The most common type of guitar in use today is the folk-style of guitar. This is the guitar you will see played around most campfires and parties, and is the one found in most music groups, church choirs, and in the corner of most homes.

Guitars come in a very wide range of prices, but when it comes to instruments, in general, you get what you pay for, especially when you buy new. There’s a difference between getting a bargain and buying cheap.

But whether you buy new or used may be determined by many personal factors, and each has their own pros and cons.

Buying new, gives you a warranty and, hopefully, a return period, if for some reason you’re not totally satisfied with your purchase, or something goes wrong.

Under ‘normal’ circumstances, a used guitar can usually be purchased cheaper and has already gone through its “break-in” period.

Commercially built guitars are usually mass manufactured. “Custom-made” guitars are exactly that. They are custom built and tailored to your specifications by a highly skilled guitar maker.

Prices for a custom-built guitar vary considerably, depending on the skill level of the craftsperson you contract the job to, but, as a rule, they are generally quite higher than a commercially built guitar of “similar” quality. Each custom built guitar is unique and therefore hard to compare in price to a commercially built guitar.

FOR THE “TECHIES”

Understanding some of the parts of a guitar will definitely help you when it comes to the Pre-Purchase Checklist.

BODY: This is the part with the sound hole in the front. It is where the strumming is done, and it can vary in size. The actual size, shape, type of wood, coating, and general build of the body also affects how the guitar will “sound”, whether it’s a rich and warm sound, or a thin and ‘twangy’ sound. The body tends to be the part that also gets scratched, damaged, and generally banged-up the most.

NECK: This is the long piece extending from the body and ends at the ‘head’ of the guitar where the ‘Tuning Heads’ are, also known as ‘machine heads’. The strings travel from the ‘Bridge’ on the body, across the sound hole, along the ‘Fret Board’, which is attached to the front-side of the neck, and finally arriving at the tuning heads where they are wrapped around tuning posts. The tuning heads are then turned by hand, which then turns the posts, making the strings tighter or looser, thus affecting their ‘tuning’. Necks tend to warp and twist if not looked after, or if the guitar is left propped against a heat source.

BRIDGE: The Bridge is normally located on the front of the body, by the sound hole, and on the side of the hole opposite to the neck. The strings are usually fed through the bridge first before they cross the hole and travel up the neck to the tuning heads. The bridge is like an anchor-point for the strings. Metal bridges are best, but on most acoustics they are either hard plastic or wood. Bridges have a tendency to crack and split over a long period of time.

FRET BOARD: The fret board is glued to the front of the neck. This is the part you press the strings onto to make chords or play individual notes. Because it’s glued on separately, a fret board can be made of a wood that’s different from the neck.

The strings travel over the fret board and the distance they are above the fret board makes a difference to the playability of the guitar. If the strings are too far above the fret board, then they will be hard to press down, making the guitar hard to play.

When a beginner plays a guitar, initially his or her fingertips are very soft and need to be hardened. A guitar with the strings too far above the fret board, also known as having a ‘high action’, will cause the player’s fingers to hurt so much that they are likely to put the guitar away in discouragement and possibly stop playing altogether.

STRINGS: Acoustic guitar strings, come in a wide variety of ‘flavors’. They can be made out of nylon, brass, steel, or a combination. Nylon strings are usually only found on Classical guitars and Student guitars, because they’re easier on the fingertips. They have a rich, warm sound to them.

Strings sets come in different ‘weights’, or sizes. Strings that come from a package marked ‘Heavy’ are usually quite thick in size and sound “beefy”. Strings that are light, or extra light, are very thin and usually have a brighter sound to them, but are also quieter sounding than heavy strings.

String choices are purely personal taste. Light strings are easier to press than heavy strings but also sound quite different. The more often strings are played, the dirtier they get. If a cloth isn’t run over and under them, from time to time, the sound becomes very dull

THE PRE-PURCHASE CHECKLIST

- Before you buy a used guitar, cost-compare against the price of a new one, unless the guitar is quite old. You could also compare its used price to other used prices by going to an online auction and either searching for the same or a similar guitar.

- Check the overall condition of the wood for cracks, scratches, splits, dents, chips, etc.

- Also check the lacquer finish for cracks and splits.

- Check the neck/fret board for warping and twisting. You can do this by holding the guitar flat on its back, with the sound hole facing upward. Bring the guitar up to eye-level, with the neck running away from you and the edge of the body almost touching your face. Let your eyesight skim across the front of the body and down the fret board. You should be able to see if the neck is twisted or bowing.

- Tune the guitar, or have the seller tune it for you.

- If you know how to play about five or six chords then play them. If you don’t know how to play, ask the seller to play them for you. This check ensures that the neck of the guitar is not warped, even though you couldn’t physically see it. If the neck is warped, and the guitar is properly tuned, then some of the chords will sound good, but others will sound as though the guitar is not tuned. If this happens, check the tuning again. If it persists, then don’t buy the guitar.

- Check the bridge of the guitar. If it’s made out of wood or plastic, make sure it’s not cracked or splitting. The bridge needs to be rock-solid, as a lot of pressure is exerted on the bridge by the strings.

- Check the tuning heads. Do they turn easily, or are they very stiff and hard to turn. Even with the high tension of the strings, a quality guitar will have tuning heads that are fairly easy to turn.

- Check the ‘action’ of the guitar. Are the strings a fair distance from the fret board? Are they easy or hard to press down at various points on the fret board?

- If you are buying the guitar for yourself, and you know how to play, even if you’re a beginner, then play the guitar.

- How does it feel?

- Is it easy or hard to play?

- Can you fit your hand around the neck/fret board comfortably to play chords?

- Is the guitar a comfortable size and shape for your body? Is it easy to hold?

- If you plan to play standing up, ask for a guitar strap.

- Do you like the sound, the color, etc?

- If you don’t play, have someone else play it for you so that you can judge what it sounds like.

WHERE TO BUY

Buying a guitar from a physical retail music store allows you to ‘test drive’ the guitar and ask more questions up front. Buying online or from a catalog may bring you more cash savings.

No matter where you buy your guitar, if you know what to look for, and spend a little extra effort in your search for that ‘perfect’ guitar, not only will your fingers thank you, but also your ears, and all those who will come to join you around the campfire, or even go to see you in concert. Who knows?

Happy playing.

Few guitarists, if any, have been as influential as Eric Clapton. He started by learning the riffs of blues masters Freddie King, B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, and Robert Johnson, among others. Combining this encyclopedia of blues licks with his own original phrases, he developed a style which has become the template for blues/rock guitar playing.

Eric first became known in 1963, as the lead guitarist for the Yardbirds, a virtual university of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitar players, whose graduates also include Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. The solos on early singles “I Wish You Would” and “Good Morning Little School Girl” provided a glimpse of the stem cells from which Clapton’s body of work would emerge. The voices of this stylistic DNA were the Fender Telecaster, Fender Jazzmaster, and Gibson ES-335 guitars, played through Vox AC-30 amplifiers. In 1964 Yardbirds manager Giorgio Gomelsky gave Clapton the nickname “Slowhand”. The legend is that when Eric broke a string onstage, the audience would engage in a “slow handclap” until Clapton had finished changing it.

In 1965, following the release of the hit single “For Your Love”, Clapton left the Yardbirds because of artistic differences. Instead of the pop stardom the rest of the Yardbirds desired, Clapton wanted to play music that was true to his blues roots. He joined forces with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, whose alumni also include original Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green and Rolling Stones’ guitarist Mick Taylor. Mayall and Clapton recorded “Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton”, nicknamed “The Beano Album”, because Clapton was pictured reading a Beano comic book on the cover. Highlights included a smoking version of “Hideaway”, Freddie King’s instrumental classic, and Robert Johnson’s “Ramblin’ on my Mind”, which is Clapton’s first recorded vocal performance. With the Bluesbreakers, Clapton combined Gibson Les Pauls and Marshall amplifiers to produce a guitar sound noted for high volume, feedback, and sustain. Eric’s reputation grew to the point that fans began to write “Clapton is God” on the walls of buildings around London as a tribute to his guitar playing prowess.

After a year in the Bluesbreakers, Clapton decided to further expand his musical horizons by forming his first “supergroup” with bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker in 1966. They chose the name “Cream” because they were considered “the cream of the crop” of British blues musicians. Their debut album, “Fresh Cream”, was followed by the classic “Disraeli Gears”. Clapton and Bruce shared singing and songwriting duties, and in the hit single “Sunshine of Your Love”, they traded vocal lines. The tune was their tribute to Jimi Hendrix, and included a spectacular solo by Clapton that quoted the 50’s song “Blue Moon” in the opening phrase. The ingredients for Clapton’s Cream recipe were the Gibson Les Paul, SG, ES-335, and Firebird, plugged into two 100-watt Marshall stacks. Eric was one of the first guitar players to popularize the Vox Wah Wah pedal, which was heard on “Tales of Brave Ulysses”, from “Disraeli Gears”, and “White Room”, from the studio disc of the two-record set, “Wheels of Fire”. The live disc of “Wheels of Fire” contained a reworking of Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads”, in which Clapton took the colors of a Mississippi delta blues Rembrandt and painted a psychedelic rock guitar Picasso. “Badge”, from “Goodbye Cream”, featured the use of a Leslie rotating speaker to create a phasing effect during the bridge section of the song. The DVD “Cream’s Farewell Concert” offers a taste of Cream’s live perfomances, which were flavored with extended jams cooked up by the three instrumental virtuosos.

During his time with Cream, Clapton jammed with several other British rock bands, including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. As a guest in the studio, he contributed the solo to George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, from the Beatles’ “White Album”. The DVD “The Rolling Stones’ Rock and Roll Circus” contains Clapton’s performance with “The Dirty Mac”, a group lead by John Lennon, which included Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards on bass.

After Cream’s breakup, Clapton formed Blind Faith, a congregation which included singer/ songwriter/ keyboardist Steve Winwood, bassist Ric Grech, and former Cream drummer Ginger Baker. The highlights of Blind Faith’s self-titled album were the hit single “Can’t Find My Way Home”, and “Do What You Like”, in which Baker contributed a devastating drum solo. Clapton’s instruments of “Faith” were a Gibson ES-335, a Gibson Firebird, and a Fender Telecaster with a Stratocaster neck, played through a Fender Dual Showman or Marshall amp. The DVD “London Hyde Park 1969″ documents the band’s debut concert.

While touring with Blind Faith, Clapton became friends with the opening act, Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett. He recruited their backup musicians, keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle, and drummer Jim Gordon, to form his next band, Derek and the Dominos. With Allman Brothers guitarist Duane Allman sitting in on slide guitar, the Dominos recorded “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs”. The two record set featured extended guitar workouts on “Keep on Growing”, “Tell the Truth”, “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?”, the blues standard “Key to the Highway”, Jimi Hendrix’ “Little Wing”, and “Layla”, on which Clapton and Allman overdubbed interweaving slide parts onto an extended coda written by drummer Gordon. Eric’s main guitar at this time had become the Fender Stratocaster. His amplifiers of choice were a Fender Champ in the studio, and either a Fender Showman or a Marshall onstage.

Clapton’s solo career bagan in 1970 with “Eric Clapton”, mainly written by Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, with the Dominos providing the musical backing. “461 Ocean Boulevard” followed, featuring Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff”, which was Eric’s first foray into reggae. Other highlights of his solo career were “Slowhand”, which included a cover of J.J. Cale’s “Cocaine”, “From the Cradle”, an album of blues standards, “Unplugged”, a Grammy winning acoustic album, “Riding with the King”, recorded with B.B. King, and “Me and Mr. Johnson”, a tribute to Robert Johnson. Clapton’s main axe during his solo years was a hybrid Stratocaster nicknamed “Blackie”, which was put together from the parts of three different 1950s Strats. In 2004 “Blackie” was auctioned for $959,500, with the proceeds going to Clapton’s “Crossroads Centre, Antigua”, a charity he formed to help victims of alcoholism and substance abuse. The DVDs “Crossroads Guitar Festival” and “Crossroads Guitar Festival 2007″ chronicle concerts in which Eric was joined by guitar players Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Hubert Sumlin, J.J. Cale, John McLaughlin, Steve Vai, Joe Walsh, Carlos Santana, Johnny Winter, Albert Lee, Jeff Beck, Robbie Robertson, Robert Cray, and Jimmie Vaughan, among others.

With his impressive resume of musical accomplishments, beginning in the 1960s and continuing to the present day, Eric Clapton’s incredibly wide ranging influence reverberates throughout the guitar playing community.

Learning The Guitar Fretboard

If you want to learn guitar at a decent level, you have to memorize the fretboard. This is an essential task to do, because it will help enormously in learning chords and scales. For example, let’s take a simple chord: C major. It is made up of three notes: C (root), E (major third) and G (fifth). If you know the fretboard, you can play it at any position, because you know where every notes are.

First position is simple: first finger on the first fret (2nd string), second finger on the second fret (4th string) and third finger on the third fret (5th string). What if you want to play a C minor chord? Simply replace E major with E minor. In other words, replace E with Eb. But where is Eb? You have to know the fretboard, you know. If you know the fretboard you know that: the first string is called E and even the sixth string is called E. If you are playing the first position C major chord, you are pressing neither the first string nor the sixth string. But, wait: you can get Eb on the 4th string: D. Just press it on the first fret: you will get D#. D# and Eb are the same thing, you know. So you realize that you have to press two strings on the same fret. In other words you need a barre chord.

When we talk about scales, things become more evident: you have to deal with notes. Yes, scales are notes. Let’s see pentatonic minor scales, for example. Notes are: 1, b3, 4, 5, b7. Five notes (PENTA-tonic). So the C pentatonic minor scale is made up of these notes: C, Eb, F, G and Bb. If you know the fretboard, you know where you have to put fingers on it immediately.

Ok, you get me: fretboard memorization is fundamental but now… how can I learn the whole fretboard? Well I know an effective exercise. You have to get a metronome. Set it at a very slow speed rate. Now press the first string on the first fret and tell what note you get. It is F, right? Then press the first string on the second fret and tell what note you get. It is F#. And so on. Go further along the fretboard. You have to press strings at each beat and, of course, you have to tell what you get every times. As soon as you feel comfortable with that speed rate, increase it and start over. I think this is a funny exercise. You will learn the whole fretboard quickly, trust me.

Well, now you know the whole fretboard, then? Now you can start learning guitar solos. I suggest you something: learn them by ear. It is
1000
easy and funny. If you have problems with fast licks, I suggest you a tool that slow down music. You could slow down guitar solos at a pace you can play without problems. As soon as you feel comfortable with that pace, increase it and start over. Again, you will learn guitar solos quickly.
