The NAMS Affiliate Marketing Event Has Gone Virtual!

I know you’ve heard me rave about the NAMS (Niche Affiliate Marketing Systems) Event in the past, and I loved the event I attended live in August 2009. I had a ticket and planned to attend this past August as well and ended up with a scheduling conflict and wasn’t able to go. You may have seen me joke on Twitter that I wished there was a virtual component since I couldn’t be there….

Well, now there is. NAMS has gone virtual, at least for the January event.

I’m very excited about this because I can never attend the January event because of my husband and kids’ schedules, so this is great for me. I can be at home with my fuzzy slippers, my cup of coffee, and my note taking pad and get some great information from some of my favorite mentors (including Lynn Terry, Nicole Dean, Susanne Myers, and more…)

It couldn’t get any better than that, right? Well, that’s what I thought, but our organizer David Perdew likes to keep us on our toes and he is always coming up with new ways to amaze and wow us. When you purchase a seat at the virtual event that starts January 14th you also get a seat at the live in person event in August. Yes, you read that correctly, two events for one price.

So, I picked up my ticket and I’m all set and looking forward to diving in starting on Friday. The new event plan looks great so far and I love that we’re using the January event to prepare and get the foundation built on our marketing projects for the new year and then for the August event we’re going to grow those out even more. It’s going to be an awesome year!

If you’re worried that it might be a little too much, don’t panic, there are four “tracks” that you can choose from, two different levels of beginner, an intermediate level, and of course the advanced level that we are all striving to reach. You can choose where you best fit in and there’s something for everyone.

A quick note there, at the live events you would certainly find many of hopping from room to room during the day to get the class we felt best fit our business plan. NAMS is a customizable marketing class, the goal is for you to get the tools and education resources you need to grow your individual business.

Congratulations, your product review ranked well in the search engines. Unfortunately, I’ll never read it.

So, you did everything right, you bought or received a cool product (one that I and many other people happen to be looking for reviews on) and you wrote a detailed review, you included pictures, you did some creative link building and you ranked well for the related product review search terms. Awesome, congrats on getting that accomplished.

Now for the bad news. I’m never going to get to read your amazing review or click your affiliate link to buy the product.

I know that probably sounds mean, so let me explain before you throw virtual tomatoes and flaming bags of poop at me.

I searched for reviews of a particular product (No, I’m not naming names or pointing fingers so you can run off and search it to see the ranked url, so use your imagination here, mmmkay?) and I skimmed the page of results that Google gave me and looked at the descriptions and titles of the top five or six before I clicked on one. I was looking for information on a very specific aspect of this product and the third ranked URL mentioned this aspect in their description so it was naturally my first click. The URL sounded sort of mommy-blogger-ish, so I thought even better, I can support a work at home mom in the process here, awesome.

Sounds good so far, right? Unfortunately, this is where things go upside down on our little journey.

I clicked and the new tab opened and the little “thinking” icon started to spin. The header came up with some navigation at the top, and a big banner ad, and more icon spinning. And more icon spinning. Sidebar started to load, and more icon spinning. At this point there are about 20 ads on my screen and no sign of the review yet. More spinning. Wow, I need a coffee refill, so I head off to the kitchen.

When I get back from refilling my coffee mug with warm caffeinated joy there is a picture of the product and the beginning of the review, but the entire post still had not loaded and there were somewhere around 30 – 50 ad buttons on the page. I didn’t count for an exact number and the page was not done loading yet, and I closed the tab and went back to the search engine to find another review.

Just some food for thought as we head into the new year. Less is more when it comes to sidebar clutter and banner advertisements. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have any, and I know you love your friends blogs and ad swaps are great, but that doesn’t mean you need hundreds of 125×125 buttons on every page of your website via the sidebar.

Feeling thankful and want to share the love? Write a testimonial!

This time of year we tend to think more about what we’re thankful for and new ways to share the love, so to speak.

I’d like to suggest to you today that you take a few minutes of your day think about the services you’ve used in the past 30 days or even the past 60 days (both online and offline) and write up a testimonial for those services that were good and beneficial to you in any way.

Testimonials are a great way for any business to showcase what they can do, whether they’re adding them to their newsletter, displaying them on their website, or even posting them on a board in their shop.

You’ll make the service provider’s day and hopefully also help other folks to make their decision about using that service in the future.

Why You May Be a Twitter Unfollow

The summer has been much slower on twitter than I’ve seen in the past. My wall still had many tweets, but it led to two months of getting a lot of links and pre-scheduled sales tweets. Not a lot of social I don’t follow even a quarter of the people following me. I go through and delete people that don’t have a lot of interaction and I’m pretty picky now on who I follow.

I use pre-scheduled tweets and links in some of my tweets as well. I’m not against that. However, you can’t posting nothing but links and expect anyone to follow you.

Why would people stop following you on Twitter? There are quite a few reasons. Eliminating those mistakes is the key to being profitable on this site. Double check your wall and see if you are a twitter unfollow. Here are five mistakes you could be making that would cause people to stop following you:

Mistake #1) Overselling

Often times businesses will just send out one sales tweet after another. The whole objective of each one is to make money.

People can smell that a mile away. Some businesses even have an automatic message when someone follows, instantly asking them to buy something.

This will repel visitors faster than anything else. Constant selling is one of the biggest mistakes business owners make. Obviously you want to make money. However, you won’t be profitable if you do nothing but sell. If there is no actual information for them to read then you will be a twitter unfollow and few will see those links, let alone click on them.

All your recent posts are on display. So if your last twenty have been blatant sales messages, people will stay far away from you. Instead, you want to focus on creating value. Sure, every now and then you can include a tweet asking people to buy something. Just avoid doing it too often.

Mistake #2) Being negative

Some people claim that you want to sell based on fear. While it is true that this can be effective, it’s far more productive to focus on positive stories.

Inspiring people to rise above their circumstances is the best way to sell. Therefore, the more positive you can be, the better. Nobody likes to be around someone who’s negative.

If you notice, the people who tend to have many friends are the most enthusiastic and positive people. The same principle goes for Twitter. Show them how you can help.

Mistake #3) Offending others

If you don’t re-tweet someone, and instead use their message as your own, you will offend others. They will then stop following you. Proper etiquette is very important. Give credit where due at all times.

Mistake #4) Being boring

Twitter is all about community. That’s what it was designed to be. It wasn’t started for the sake of helping businesses.

Therefore, when you recognize that and get involved in the conversation, people will be more inclined to follow you. When you show no interest in others, people will unfollow you.

Mistake #5) Not including personality

People don’t buy from businesses, they buy from people. Therefore, telling interesting stories about your life is key. If you can tie it into your niche, all the better.

The more personality you have, the more money you can make.

Some try to keep their business and personal life completely seperate, but in social networking I haven’t seen that work successfully. While you do not need to talk about everything your baby is doing, the kids soccer games, or what you had for dinner, you do need to let people get to know you at least a little.

The bottom line is, when used the right way, Twitter can be very productive. Avoid these five mistakes, and you will be well on your way to profiting from the site and being less of a twitter unfollow.

Is it Possible to Make Money Blogging?

We hear this question all the time here. When the blogging craze started, blogging was hailed as the new easy way to make money online. Just slap up a blog, add a little content, throw in a few affiliate links, and your future was assured. You know it’s not that easy, don’t you? Of course you do or you wouldn’t be here wondering about it

Before you build your blog you need to do a little bit of niche research. Ask yourself these questions:
Is this niche viable, or is there too much competition?
Can I beat some of the sites on Google’s first page?
Does this niche have buyers, or just tire kickers?
Are there some good affiliate programs associated with this niche?

It’s been said to pursue your passion and the money will follow. This is true to a point, but suppose your passion is juggling machetes? Do you think there’s a market for this skill? The broader niche of juggling might suit you better. Don’t limit yourself to things you know now, though. It’s easy to do research online, so if you have a strong desire to learn about a new topic, starting a blog is a great way to get an education.

I heard Carrie Wilkerson recently say that the passion doesn’t have to be the thing you’re writing about, your passion can simply be taking care of your family and paying your bills or getting out of debt. I thought that was a pretty wise thing in the current economy with so many people looking to get started.

Now that you have your niche you need to get your blog online. Don’t use free blog sites like blogger.com, or wordpress.com. You need your own domain name and your own hosting. These sites have their uses, but you should never trust your content (and maybe your livelihood!) to a free service. If you’re looking to make money with the site you’re creating chances are a few months from now you’re going to want to move it from that freebie service anyway, so I think it’s worth the 8 or 9 dollars to just start with your own domain name.

Okay, you’ve got your domain name and hosting. What platform will you use for your blog? Many people use WordPress for this. You can install WordPress using Fantastico in your cPanel, or you can install it manually. You may want to install WordPress in its own directory rather than in the root folder. This leaves your root folder uncluttered and easy to navigate, but changes your URL from http://www.myblog.com to http://www.myblog.com/some-directory.

Now for the most important part: Content. You need to add posts regularly to your blog. Every day is great if you’re able to, but at least several times weekly. Set up a schedule and stick to it. An advantage of WordPress is that you can set posts to publish on a certain day. This means you can load posts in advance without having to write new ones every day.

Don’t make the mistake of just adding posts with affiliate links in them. This is a big turn off for visitors. People are coming to your blog for information. If everything on your blog is sell, sell, sell, you will soon be reading it alone.

Now comes the hard part: Traffic. Remember this formula: Content+Backlinks=Traffic. This means that the keyword-optimized content you add to your blog, plus the incoming links you have to your site, equals search engine ranking. The big thing here is backlinks. You can never have enough backlinks.

So, how do you get backlinks? You can post on forums with a link to your site in your signature. You can comment on other relevant blogs. You can submit articles to article directories with a link to your site in your resource box. Post a classified ad on free ad sites with a link to your blog. There are many ways to get backlinks. Just make sure they are relevant to your blog.

To answer the title question, yes it is possible to make money blogging and sometimes a lot of it. The important thing to remember is that it takes work, consistency, and perseverance. Remember that last one, because that’s the real key to making money with a blog.

One element of this website that we get a lot of compliments on is our RSS Subscribe Button in the sidebar. I’ve had several people ask me to customize one just for them and I was more than happy to do so. In fact, we’ve had so many requests for it that I decided to make a few to share with you here. These are free for you to use on your own blog or website. A link back is not required, but of course is always appreciated.
