Barby Paragas, not Barbie Palagos: Pnoy’s mystery date?

It was Barby Paragas (not Barbie Palagos) which President Noy (P-noy) , the country’s most eligible bachelor, dated last Saturday at the Nuvo Restaurant in Greenbelt, Makati City. The mystery date became fodder of much speculation because it came on the heels of a rumored split between the President and his girlfriend of two years, lovely Councilor Shalani Soledad of Valenzuela City.
Insiders said the 31-year old Barby is as pretty as Shalani. If she is the same Barby Paragas that shows up in an internet search of the professional network LinkedIn, indications are she is very brainy as well.

There is no Facebook profile of Ms. Paragas, but her LinkedIn resume puts her as having a civil engineering degree from Dela Salle University (Class of 2001) and a Masters in Civil Engineering (Major in Transportation Engineering) from the University of the Philippines. Her work deals with human resource management and she is the general manager of her own company, HRSolutions Global Inc. Those who know her describe her as simple and down-to-earth and yes, very private.

Microsoft: IE9's Graphics Acceleration Better Than Chrome and Firefox

Since November of last year, one of Microsoft's big themes for Internet Explorer 9 has been "graphics hardware acceleration" using Windows DirectX. Just last week, Mozilla's Firefox 4 beta turned on graphics hardware acceleration by default. And last March, the Google Chrome team announced its ANGLE project to do something similar, while just last week a Google engineer blogged about Chrome 7 including graphics acceleration.

In response, Microsoft's Program Manager Lead for Web Graphics, Ted Johnson, has just posted on the IEblog, claiming that while other browser may be starting to implement graphics hardware acceleration, only IE9's is "full."

In the blog post, Johnson claims that IE9 graphics hardware acceleration works with "everything on every Web page—text, images, backgrounds, borders, SVG content, HTML5 video and audio—using the Windows DirectX graphics APIs. With Platform Preview 3 in July, IE9 introduced a hardware-accelerated HTML5 canvas." The competing API for web graphics, WebGL, only accelerates that last, and Google's ANGLE (Almost Native Graphics Layer Engine) project is only concerned with translating some WebGL code to display using Windows DirectX, which enjoys far more support on today's PC hardware.

Why is using graphics hardware so important? Because the graphics processor and memory are much faster at manipulating images like those the browser has to display on-screen. Microsoft has demonstrated this on its IE9 Test Drive site site with several test pages showing spinning logos and animated fish-tank visuals. The tests report frames-per-second, a common measure of graphics performance, especially for 3D games. In my quick test of the new Firefox 4 beta 5, I found that it's graphics acceleration indeed bumped its performance on the fish demo slightly above that of the IE9 Platform Preview, but the spinning logo's demo still trailed significantly.

Mozilla, too, has provided a demo that tests graphics acceleration, and running this in Google Chrome 6 shows that browser's potential Achilles heel: It delivered 4 frames per second. Firefox 4 beta 5 came in at 91, while the IE9 platform preview showed 67 frames per second. IE Test Drive's Psychedelic Browsing demo showed a similar skew: Chrome 6 clocked 50 revolutions per minute, compared with Firefox's 1774 and IE9 Platform Preview's 1810. Another test showing an animated font enlargement performed smoothly in IE9, nearly as smoothly in Firefox 4 beta, but jerkily in Chrome 6.

Why is that?

Microsoft claims it's because their nascent browser is using graphics hardware to accelerate page composition and the final desktop window composition as well as just content rendering. According to Johnson, "Based on their blog posts, the hardware-accelerated implementations of other browsers generally accelerate one phase or the other, but not yet both."

Another reason is that Chrome and Firefox also have to support multiple platforms — Mac and Linux — in addition to Windows, so they require a translation layer (such as Chrome's ANGLE) before the content can get to DirectX. IE9, claims Johnson, uses native DirectX code, with any intervening layers.

Not only can graphics-hardware support speed up web graphics and game-type pages, but it's ideal for making video — in particular HD video — play smoothly. To someone who likes to view web TV content on a big-screen TV, this is pretty important.

Microsoft has announced the availability of the first actual beta of Internet Explorer for next Wednesday. For those how prefer to avoid the earlier Platform Preview's bare bones interface, it will be a good chance to play with the next version of Internet Explorer. And at that time, not only will we be able to see its graphics-hardware-enhanced speed, but also what's up Microsoft's sleeve in terms of a new user interface. Meanwhile, you can already head to the IE9 Test Drive site to download the Platform Preview and try out your own speed tests.

Is your Youth Group Accomplish Anything?

“Does this church even have a youth ministry?”

I hear this question all the time, from Mars Hill members, visitors, and people who have never set foot within our doors. And the short answer to the question is “no.” At least not what most people would consider a youth ministry.

What’s really being asked is “Does this church gather all its teenagers on Wednesday nights, have monthly lock-ins, go on summer mission trips to Mexico, and have attractional, flashy, and really expensive winter and summer retreats?” The answer is a gentle, but emphatic, “no.” Not anymore. Why? Three reasons:

Statistically, it isn’t working.
Discipleship as seen in Scripture is minimal.
The Holy Spirit told us to do otherwise.

The Statistics Say It All

The term “working” might be a little nebulous, but youth pastors know those stats. We know that somewhere between 60–80% of teens who are active in churches stop going altogether in their twenties. Yet many churches still cling to this model created decades ago, hoping they will be the exception.

Look at the students in your chairs. If you were convinced that six out of ten were going to leave the church once they go to college, would you stick with what you’re doing? The point of all ministry is disciple-making. Ask yourself, Youth Pastor, does that happen on a Wednesday night through your games, skits, teen worship band, videos, and 20-minute message?

Discipleship Is Crucial

A little over a year ago, it became absolutely clear that I was leading a ministry that wasn’t focused on making disciples. My leaders had a heart to disciple, but how could they in 90 minutes that were filled with programming? Any disciple-making that I or my leaders were doing was extracurricular.

We had to get into the lives of our students.

Wednesday night groups were cancelled. As opposed to everyone coming together, we broke into community groups spread throughout our region and connected by gender and geography. Suddenly, our students’ “youth group” experience was 5-10 other teenagers meeting in a home with two adult leaders wrestling through the Scriptures, bearing burdens (Galatians 6:2), confessing sins and praying for each other (James 5:16), teaching and admonishing (Colossians 3:16), and rebuking one another (2 Timothy 3:16).

Suddenly, discipleship started happening—every week.

Change as the Holy Spirit Guides You

I’ve grown sick of attractional youth ministry. These ministries eat up huge chunks of the budget, their pastors are under immense pressure, and at times, their satisfaction in Jesus varies with the number of teenagers that show up on a given Wednesday night. I know because I’ve been there.

And the Holy Spirit guided us elsewhere. I can’t overstate this point. There was real conviction when I examined the ministry that God had entrusted to me. I was restless and burdened, knowing something had to change. God confirmed this in the heart of other key leaders, several parents, and my head pastor as well when I shared the burden with them.

And so we changed. But there is no perfect youth group playbook or set of procedures to follow if you want it all to “work.” The only perfect model is to walk daily in the Spirit, to be faithful to his leading in your life as a youth pastor, and to examine the Scriptures and let them be authoritative in how you decide to build your ministry.

Most people will simply interpret this as ”a cool thing to do” or a “fashion statement”. Those who have passed the 101 of Illuminati symbolism know that the All-Seeing Eye is probably its most recognizable symbol. The gesture of hiding one eye, usually the left one, goes way back in occult orders. Here’s an explanation of the origin of the Eye of Horus.

Horus, the sun of Osiris and Isis was called ‘Horus who rules with two eyes’. His right eye was white and represented the sun: his left eye was black and represented the moon. According to the myth, Horus lost his left eye to his evil brother, Seth, who he fought to avenge Seth’s murder of Osiris. Seth tore out of the eye but lost the fight. The eye was reassembled by magic, by Thoth, the god of writing, the moon and magic. Horus presented his eye to Osiris, who experienced rebirth in the underworld.

One thing is for sure: Lady is Gaga for the All-Seeing Eye.

This last picture is very significant. It confirms the fact that the closed eye is used in the context of esoteric symbolism. Her left eye is in her hand, referring to the Hand of Fatima (evil eye). Also, one can’t ignore the resemblance with good ol’ Baphomet.
