Put your home on a diet and de-clutter.

Hoarding. We’re all guilty of it. Especially when it comes to things like the desk drawer – mine is full of useless ‘things’ that take up space; paper clips, a plug adaptor, wires and old business cards). But the best thing I’ve done this year (especially before moving house) is chuck or relocate the contents of the drawer.

Remember, moving is about new beginnings and fresh starts so getting rid of that broken iron or printer is a ‘must do’ before you get to your new home (imagine unpacking that desk drawer/broken iron in your new home).

Some easy tips on de-cluttering:

1. Start by clearing the empty space – places like dining room tables and kitchen work benches are great dumping grounds. Start by putting everything back in its place or chucking it out. Do it today, don’t put it off!

2. Clothes – live by the rule ‘if I haven’t worn it in 6 months, donate or chuck it.’ Ruthless I know but, utterly liberating. You won’t regret it. If you have kids, get them to do this with their rooms

3. For everything else, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Do I love this item?

2. Have I used it in the last 6-12 months?

3. Is it really rubbish?

There is a huge sense of relief that comes with de-cluttering. Your life will just seem simpler. It is also the perfect way to reduce your moving bill – less furniture equals cheaper removals bill.

The slump in the property market has seen a lot of mobility in the market and the development of a trend we call ‘upgrading’. Primarily with customers taking advantage of decreasing rents in high profile areas and upgrading to high quality buildings and more central locations. International City and Sharjah residents are moving to JLT, JLT to the Marina, Springs to the Lakes, and Greens to the Palm. Even within the developments like the Palm, residents are leaving the Shoreline apartments in favor of the more exclusive Tiara residences for example.

I see a shift in market dynamics on the horizon as rental prices begin to settle. With that I think its important to remain fluid, adaptive and have the ability to quickly respond to changes in customer needs, fluctuations in demand as well as competitor activity without affecting the quality of your services. With our highly scalable model I believe we are well positioned to do so.

5. What are the major obstacles that a moving company has to face in the current environment?

The industry has seen a flood of new operators join the ranks recently which is having a positive price impact for the customer, and creating challenging environment for all.

While we consider imitation as the highest form of flattery, it’s still disappointing to see all your hard work copied overnight. That said, a few web pages and a bit of fancy technology doesn’t define our business, its the way we service our customers that sets us apart. Now, that’s something you cannot copy overnight.

7. What is the way ahead for Easytruck?

We are looking at exponential growth over the next 24 months and that means three things. More trucks, more value added services, more happy customers!

8. Any new area you plan to concentrate?

Ultimately I would like to refine the business model to a point where I can roll it out internationally. Easytruck is redefining the moving & storage business and I believe our services will be well received in other more mature markets as well as our own backyard. Being an Australian, I do have my sights set on an easytruck business “Down Under” but my English wife and partner assured me that won’t be for another year or two
