Looking for Halal infant iron drops / syrup.There seems to be only two choices for canadian manufactured iron supplement in liquid form.

Enfamil (Fer in sol drops / syrup)
Odan Labs (Ferodan Syrup, Ferodan Infant Drops drops / syrup / tablet)
Euro-Pharm Pediafer (Oral liquid, Oral solution)
Pelafer (Tablet, oral suspension)

Trying to avoid Enfamil Fer In sol drops since it has alcohol in it:

FER IN SOL INGREDIENTS
Enfamil Fer in sol - Oral Drops
Each 1.0 mL of liquid contains ferrous sulfate 75 mg (equivalent to 15 mg elemental iron). Nonmedicinal ingredients: artificial flavouring, citric acid anhydrous, ethyl alcohol, purified water, sodium bisulfite, sorbitol solution, and sugar. Alcohol: 0.16%.

Enfamil Fer in sol - Syrup
Each 5 mL of syrup contains ferrous sulfate 150 mg (equivalent to 30 mg elemental iron). Each teaspoonful contains 5 mL. Nonmedicinal ingredients: artificial flavouring, citric acid anhydrous, purified water, sodium bisulfite, sodium chloride, sorbitol solution, sugar, and sulfuric acid. This medication does not contain alcohol. (great!)* Seems ok. anyone have any info to add regarding Enfamil Fer in Sol syrup is welcome...

PELAFAR INGREDIENTS

Capsules

Each scarlet capsule, printed "PALAFER" in white ink on the body and cap, contains ferrous fumarate M.D.I. (micro dispersible form) 300 mg representing 100 mg of elemental iron. Infant Drops

This medication does not contain gluten, lactose, or tartrazine.

Syrup

Each 5 mL of light amber solution with an aromatic fruity flavour contains ferrous sulfate 150 mg (equivalent to elemental iron 30 mg). Nonmedicinal ingredients:citric acid, flavours (lemon, pineapple, and strawberry), glycerin, purified water, sodium bisulfite, sorbitol, and sucrose. This medication does not contain gluten, lactose, or tartrazine.

Tablet (nothing fishy but not practical for kids)

Each red, round, odorless tablet contains 300 mg of ferrous sulfate (60 mg of elemental iron). Nonmedicinal ingredients: carnauba wax, crospovidone, FD&C Blue No. 2, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 6, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, PEG 400 polyvinylpyrrolidone, povidone, titanium dioxide, and triacetin.

Problem with Ferodan is they contain Glycerin. GREAT!!

Toronto Popeyes not HALAL

A group of Muslim restaurant franchisees is fighting fast-food chain Popeyes Louisiana Chicken in court over the right to sell hand-slaughtered Halal meat for religious reasons.

The battle in Ontario Superior Court comes after the Atlanta-based franchise moved to replace the chicken supply with machine-killed birds in 14 Toronto restaurants. The company says it’s still Halal-certified; the franchisees claim the machine method is against the beliefs of a majority of Muslims.
“If I begin selling machine-slaughtered chicken, I will immediately lose an enormous segment of my customers,” reads the sworn affidavit from Abdul Haffejee, who owns eight Popeyes in the GTA.
Haffejee, who donates Popeyes chicken to mosques and sponsored Muslim Day at Canada’s Wonderland, said between 50 and 80 per cent of his customers are Muslim.

“All of the members of the Muslim community that I have worked so hard to attract will be gone instantly. They cannot be replaced,” he said in his affidavit, claiming tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars at stake.

Interestingly enough, it was due to the confusion that these lists caused, that Walker's liaised with us as far back as 2005 to produce a list of products which were suitable for Muslims, according to Islamic Fiqh principles. In the past, this has been a simple enough task for Walker's to complete, and you the Muslim Consumer benefitted. This is no longer happening. Suffice to say, these lists are not sufficient enough for us to make a decision. As we have said, we do not charge one penny for this service, and so apart from serving the Muslim Community, we really don't stand to benefit financially whatsoever. We would urge you to contact Walker's again, and request them to provide us the information, in the format we require, and provided to us in the past. We would then be able to serve the Muslim Consumer, and Walker's can demonstrate thet they really do care for the Muslim consumer. July 2011 Walker's (Quakers) has informed us that they will be unable to provide an update to the Foodguide. Based on this information, henceforth we will be unable to field any queries regarding Walker's and Quavers products. We do not charge Walker's (or any other company for that matter) even 1 penny for investigating, checking, and featuring their products. We feel that this is a service in which both companies, and Muslim Consumers mutually benefit. Biotech company using cell lines from aborted babies in food enhancement testing

LARGO, Florida, March 29, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Pepsico, Kraft Foods, and Nestlé are among the corporations partnered with a biotech company found using aborted fetal cell lines to test food flavor enhancers, according to a pro-life watchdog group.

The internationally recognized biotech company, Senomyx, boasts innovation and success in “flavour programs” designed to reduce MSG, sugar and salt in food and beverage products. Senomyx notes their collaborators provide them research and development funding plus royalties on sales of products using their flavor ingredients.

Pro-life watchdog group, Children of God for Life (CGL), has called upon the public to target the major corporations in a boycott, unless the company ceases to use aborted fetal cell lines in their product testing.

“Using isolated human taste receptors,” the Senomyx website claims, “we created proprietary taste receptor-based assay systems that provide a biochemical or electronic readout when a flavor ingredient interacts with the receptor.”

“What they do not tell the public is that they are using HEK 293 – human embryonic kidney cells taken from an electively aborted baby to produce those receptors,” stated Debi Vinnedge, Executive Director for CGL, the watch dog group that has been monitoring the use of aborted fetal material in medical products and cosmetics for years.

Although Turmeric is Halal as is but in reality it is not sold as 100% turmeric in food industry in USA(same thing in Europe), Polysorbate 60 or 80 a fat based emulsifiers is added if it is from pork fat then Halal original ground turmeric became Haram. This fat based emulsifier Polysorbate 60 or 80 is called processing aid ingredient or hidden ingredient to turmeric and will not declare on ingredients statement.

The vitamin D is synthesized from cholesterol derived from lanolin from sheep's wool. The glycerin is a sweetener (a colourless syrup liquid) that is synthetically produced. There is no protein in this ingredient.

The fat quality and quantity has been formulated to promote growth and development.Compared to formula it is very similar to the modified milk used in Follow-Up formula and most milk-based starter formulas.

Blessing, Gewurzmuller launch organic and Halal cultures

Frutarom-owned Gewurzmuller is introducing new organic starter cultures for raw sausage and raw cured meats, and has announced that all the food cultures made by its Blessing Biotech arm are now certified Halal.

Meat flavour and seasoning producer Gewurzmuller was one of seven companies acquired by Israeli firm Frutarom in 2007, and the deal included Blessing Biotech which produces starter cultures used in fermentation of micro organisms and enzymes, mainly for the dairy and bakery industry.

Gewurzemuller says that, with Blessing it has an advantage in being able to make its own starter cultures, as it can offer optimally matched seasonings and starter cultures from a single source.

The new organic cultures, called Bitec Organic GM-1 and Bitec Organic SM-96 use organic sucrose as the medium and do not use any genetically modified or genetically engineered raw materials throughout the process.

The former is mildly acidifying and is suitable for all kinds of raw sausage – from fresh and spreadable through to firmer varieties – and is said to provide “a distinctive fermentation flavour combined with an attractive colour”.

The latter is said to be non-acidifying and suitable for organic raw cured products, bringing a “characteristic” flavour, stable colour and high procedural reliability.

All Halal
The new organic additions are also Halal, as Blessing’s entire range of starter cultures have recently been certified Halal by the European Institute of Halal Certification.

The company decided to seek certification as a result of higher demnd for Halal foods in Europe. Some 20 million Muslims are thought to live in Europe now, of which 4 million live in Blessing’s home country of Germany.

The Halal ingredient trend in recent years has been driven by second and third generation Muslims, who want to eat the same kinds of Western-style foods as their non-Muslim peers but still in accordance with Muslim food laws.

Tang gets halal certification (Phillipines)

MANILA, Philippines - During the recent conference held at Marco Polo Hotel in Davao, Kraft Foods, the second largest global food company, unveiled a present for our Muslim brothers and sisters in Mindanao. The company revealed that Tang has gained the halal certification of the Philippine IDCP Islamic Da’wah Council of the Philippines (IDCP).
“Even before this event, Kraft Foods has been very supportive of our organization here in the Philippines,” says lawyer Abdul Rahman Linzag, IDCP president and secretary-general of the World Halal Council. “And with Tang’s halal certification, our brethren will now enjoy a delicious and refreshing drink that has passed the strict IDCP guidelines for halal certification.”
Tang is already halal-certified by the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand — the only Islamic organization in Thailand duly authorized to conduct halal certification and accreditation. However, with IDCP’s accreditation, Tang can now pride itself on a seal that is globally-recognized by halal certification bodies and Muslims alike.

“Tang endeavors to maintain its relevance to our brothers and sisters in Mindanao, particularly for this season of Ramadan, by getting the halal stamp from the IDCP,” explains Doroty Arroyo, senior brand manager for Tang.
This important symbol not only means that Tang does not contain ingredients that are considered unlawful, according to the strict guidelines of the Qu’Ran; it also means that Tang is made from ingredients with high quality and safety standards.
“It has always been Tang’s proposition to get kids to drink more water, by making water more exciting for everyone in the country,” says Arroyo. “So we really pushed and worked towards getting Tang, Philippine halal certified as a way of showing our commitment, anchored on fulfilling Kraft’s promise of making every day delicious for everyone.”
Tang will incorporate the IDCP halal seal on every package.
“Making today delicious for everyone is a global mandate for Kraft Foods and we intend to enliven this through this initiative. Halal shop to replace kosher Pita Plus

When Naumaan Hamid decided to expand his chain of halal restaurants, the diverse and bustling business of downtown College Park was too appealing to pass up.But the diverse population that initially attracted him to the location isn’t reacting the way he expected.

“Krazi Kebob,” a halal fusion of Eastern and Mexican cuisine, is scheduled to open in two weeks at the former location of Pita Plus, which unexpectedly closed two days ago. Although the replacement of the Mediterranean restaurant, students’ only source of off-campus kosher meals, takes away what many students considered a home away from home, it fills a void for another oft-ignored community.

The university’s Jewish community has expressed frustration at the closing of Pita Plus, which many relied on as a local spot to take families and visitors who keep kosher. Others argue that the lack of an off-campus kosher restaurant presents a challenge for getting meals that adhere to their religious dietary restrictions.

“It’s really upsetting,” said junior Stephanie Cantor, a member of the university’s Jewish Leadership Council. “I know there’s a really large population that definitely loved to have this as an alternative to Hillel, especially for freshmen living in dorms who don’t have the option to cook meals.”

Sophomore chemical engineering major Mohammed Shaikh, who is Muslim, said he sympathizes with Jewish concerns of having limited dining options.“I agree with them,” he said. “ We should be fair even with non-Muslims. They have the right to have their own restaurant.”

Mahir Maruf, a recent alumni and former member of the Muslim Students’ Association, said that when he was a student, he and his friends frequently had to travel to Greenbelt to eat at Pizza Roma — the closest halal restaurant to campus.
But while Muslim students expressed sympathy — and even solidarity — with the hardships the restaurant’s closure may impose on Jewish students, they feel the addition of a halal restaurant was much-needed. Shaikh previously advocated for the installment of a halal restaurant in the Stamp Student Union, by contacting university officials, creating a Facebook group and starting a petition. His requests were denied. “[Muslims] have the right to our own restaurant as well,” he added.

Naomi Henry, president of Muslim Women of Maryland, said that following halal restrictions has been a challenge for all three years she’s lived on the campus. “It’s hard when you live on campus and have no halal options,” she said, adding that the new restaurant will lessen her struggle. “Sometimes you’re forced to become a vegetarian. If I went to the diner, it meant I was either eating a salad bar, a tuna sandwich, or a veggie patty every single day. It’s kind of hard having to eat the same exact thing every day. I don’t even know if it’s necessarily healthy to have no variation.”

Other students, including Henry, said the new restaurant will benefit the entire College Park community, and not just those adhering to halal standards.

Senior Shabnom Khan, a member of the Muslim Students’ Association and an on-campus group called Female Religious Interfaith Endeavor, said there are several parallels in halal and kosher restrictions: Both religions are forbidden from consuming pork and may only eat other meats from animals that were slaughtered humanely.

“It is really too bad for the Jewish community,” said junior philosophy and Jewish studies major Hannah Spiro, a former employee of Pita Plus. “But since halal is stricter with their meat than other restaurants, maybe more lenient Kosher students will be able to eat [at Krazi Kebob].”
But Hillel engagement associate Tetyana Gutsol was less sympathetic.

“This campus is 30 percent Jewish, and this area needs to have a kosher place,” she said. “Sometimes people want a different atmosphere [than Hillel] or somewhere to go when their parents visit.”
Some commented on the irony of the switch.

“I just think it was very interesting that it was a Kosher restaurant and now it’s turning into a place for religious Muslims,” Cantor added.

Hannah Wenger, a mashgiah who oversees kashrut in the Hillel kitchen, said that it would be foolish to take the switch personally.

Junior Omnia Joehar, spokeswoman of the Muslim Women of Maryland, agreed. She said talk of the change reflects a larger issue: “When are Muslims able to do anything and it’s not a controversy anymore? ... They’re not opening up a shop based on Islamic beliefs; it’s just Middle Eastern food,” she said.

Others feel the switch in restaurants was simply a business decision. Pita Plus owner Liora Dahan, declined to comment on the closure.

Jared Barol, a senior Central European studies major who eats meals at Hillel, said the hype surrounding the issue is unnecessary. “We’re all members of the University of Maryland, first and foremost. Differences we put in the way like this will make us fall apart. These are not the biggest issues,” he said.

Hamid said he hopes Krazi Kebob can become a social sport for all students, and that he was attracted to the location because of its close proximity to a diverse campus.“I want to reach out to every community, not just the [Muslim] market,” he said.

No Lard In Product Says QBB Pure Ghee (MALAYSIA)

Bandar Seri Begawan - QBB Pure Ghee yesterday said that in light of recent media reports regarding QBB Pure Ghee, it irrevocably stated its stand on the matter that its product did not and has never contained lard or any substance of porcine origin. In a statement released yesterday, it said, "We have no doubt whatsoever, that the product concerned is Halal and is fit for consumption by Muslims.

"Our product has been certified Halal by the Islamic Coordinating Council of Victoria, which is also recognised by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM). Samples of our product have regularly been analysed by independent laboratories to prove its nature and content.

"These analyses, have confirmed that the content of our product is 99.7 per cent butteroil while the remaining amount is made up (of) moisture, peroxide values and class 1 trace amount. In fact, the results of Malaysian Chemistry Department (JKM) analysis also found no traces of lard or any substances of porcine origin.
"It is unfortunate that JAKIM had decided to revoke our Halal certification (SPH), based on the fact that the JKM has not been able to determine a certain substance found in the product, which they labeled as 'foreign substance'.

"Contrary to what has been reported by some media, this substance which presently could not be identified by JKM has not been determined to be 'prohibited for consumption' by Muslims.
"QBB believes this 'unidentified substance' to be one of the natural ingredients, found in milk products, as ghee is derived purely from milk, with no other ingredients added in the process.

"Naturally, there may be a small chance of antioxidants like linoleic acid and tocapherols emerging in the product. To enable them to determine the substance with certainty, they have requested for a copy of the certificate of analysis from JAKIM and JKM. Unfortunately, to date, we have yet to receive the said documents.

"The abovementioned certificate of analysis would enable us to determine the exact nature of the alleged `foreign substance' to clear any doubt that may exist. To this end, we have offered the services of an independent dairy expert to help identify the nature and presence of the 'foreign substance'. UAE president advisor set for UK halal meeting

An advisor to the president of the United Arab Emirates will be visiting Birmingham tomorrow (Friday) to discuss halal meat export opportunities.

Sheikh Syed Ali Hashmi, a personal advisor to President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will be meeting Janan Meat MD Naved Syed and Mohammad Nazir, West Midlands Minority Ethnic Business Forum chairman, to discuss business opportunities between the two countries.

Sheikh Syed will be visiting the Birmingham Law Courts on Friday, followed by a seminar at Birmingham law firm Artis Legal.

Key Birmingham business leaders will have an opportunity to highlight matters of mutual benefit, such as business and non-commercial investment opportunities in halal developments, Islamic finance and other mutual partnerships within Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Naved Syed said: “For too long Birmingham City (has) lost out (on) investments from the UAE to London and other cities. Birmingham and the West Midlands has a great track record of developing new initiatives in the halal food industry and this is sure to attract extra interest for potential investments from His Excellency Sheikh Syed Ali Hashimi.”

Catching Fake Halal Sign in Malaysia

He said that he would be tabling the motion on the matter at the next sitting of the Dewan Rakyat.

He said this in commenting on the raid by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) at a shopping complex here Wednesday where it was found a number of stalls at its food centre were using fake halal logos.

Earlier, he had presented Aidilfitri aid to 380 needy people at City Hall's Tow Depot here Thursday.

Jamil Khir also said a halal hub laboratory had been earmarked in Nilai which would be managed by Jakim and the funding for it would come under the 10th Malaysia Plan.
