North Country Trail

Recently got back from backpacking a new loop in the Manistee National Forest with my dad. When I was in middle school I went on a few separate occasions but have not been back since. My dad mentioned that the NCT put a new loop on the other side of the river through the forest. We decided to go check it out. The loop is just under 20 miles, we hiked in about 6 miles along the Manistee trail side Thursday afternoon and posted up camp.

Friday we packed up camp and continued to hike north towards The Upper River Trailhead where we crossed the suspension bridge and headed back south to Eddington Creek. We took a short break, refueled with some snacks and filled up all our water bottles for the last time before going deeper into the woods. We hiked about 9 miles our second day before finding a nice spot to camp.

We packed up Saturday morning and headed back to our car just in time before the rain started pouring down. We cut through Ludington on our way home and stopped at Jamesport Brewing Co. for a burger and beer. It was great to get away from the hustle of life, simplify and enjoy some time with my dad.

Northern Adventures

Pat and I had the opportunity of visiting Justin Cooper before moving away from Marquette

a couple months ago. It was great to escape from the daily grind of things and all the responsibilities of life for a few days and just enjoy good company, nature, photography, no schedules or phone service, bicycles, local eateries, random adventures and overall the perfect road trip experience. Thank you Jaci and Justin for having us and look forward to the upcoming adventures also!

We stopped at Canyon falls on The Sturgeon River. It was great to go off the beaten path, take photos, enjoy sunshine and to slowly transition into the day before riding later. The lighting with all the reflections on the water and the backlit sky made photos relatively difficult but still managed to get a few shots.

Justin told us about this little town called Sawyer, MI and how it was an old abandoned military facility and airport. We decided that would be a great place to go ride one of the days we were up north. It turned out to be a great adventure and made for some great memories and photographs as

well!

Saturday night there was a going away party for Justin and Jaci. It was great to meet a bunch of their friends from work and to just let loose after an eventful day. Between beerpong, flippy cup and shots the night got a little fuzzy!

The last day we stayed in Marquette it was a rainy cool day. Recovering from the night before we went thrift shopping, ate a good breakfast and relaxed until the afternoon. Later in the day we checked out the new skate plaza which was located next to the old skate park which we visited a few years before. All in all I am very thankful for the trip and the ability to have escaped normal day life and enjoy good company and adventure with friends. I can't wait for the next trip so I have another excuse to get lost, take photos and ride bicycles.

Screen Printing Bench

I'm currently in the process of repurposing old screen printing screens left over from a t-shirt company. I initially started out using some of the non-paint-covered ones as an experiment in getting into shou sugi ban before some upcoming larger projects which may end up being incorporated with the theme of a new bistro we'll be breaking ground on in the near future. While sifting through all of the old, broken frames, I became distracted by all of the colors (or maybe all of the soot I sucked down while charring the wood), and I ended up whipping this together.

The majority of my time was probably, actually, spent deciding the color layout once I had all of the pieces selected and cut. All in all, pretty happy with how an afternoon of digging around in some colorful madness turned out.

We literally, have piles of this wood that are about five foot wide by five foot deep and, if stacked on top of one another, would probably go up several stories. So, expect more benches, stools, possibly chairs, and at least a table or two (if not some interesting bmx obstacles here and there). - RV

Nordhouse Dunes

Got a chance to spend some time with my dad and go backpacking at Nordhouse Dunes again. I went with Justin a few years back and have been wanting to go back since. Its a fun trail and has a wide array of terrain for such a condensed area. Definitely a fun hike and fun stay! We camped in many familiar spots and also explored some new ones. We came across a bunch of wildlife! We ran into snakes, turtles, eagles, deer, turkey, fish and a brief encounter with a raccoon. I am happy I had the opportunity to get caught up with work and go on this trip and reconnect with my dad. Friends loved ones have been passing away and also some of my friends health have been rough lately. I have not had anyone too close to me pass away yet, I have been trying to empathize with what my friends are experiencing. Although I will never know what some of those situations or circumstances are like until I go through them myself, empathizing has been helping me respect the frailty of life and time. It is helping me put aside my differences and the past to enjoy the moment that we have and enjoying the most of it. I am thankful for the time I had with my dad over the past few days.

Had a roll of Fuji something or other finally developed. I'm terrible about getting to the point of actually going through a roll, then even worse about doing anything about it once they're finished.

There are definitely qualities in the colors that I enjoy with these, and never having actually had any larger prints made from any rolls I've shot might be biasing me, but I think I just really enjoy digital as the more versatile tool that it is. Or maybe because I've never shot with quality glass with film. Or _______.

It’s 7am and I’m passing through the lines at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. NAIA. My flight is 8am. I’m drunk.

It’s 9 o’clock, I’m in 60F, still drunk. Last time I ate, maybe, probably, last night. My stomach is growling acidic, drunken hunger.

24 hours of travel to sit and think; about failed relationships; about uncertainty. About everything and nothing.

By the time the flight attendant comes around with the food cart, I’m feeling more of a hangover than anything else. I get eggs and sausage because it sounds like the other option she says, only barely above the sound of the air vents and wind rushing along the body of the jet—the pressure working against my eardrums—is “corn and rice”.

Pork, she said. “Pork,” because I don’t really look Filipino, and not “tocino”. I would’ve understood tocino. I have eggs and sausage.

When she passes by again, asking everyone “coffee or tea?”, I ask her for water and another coffee. She hands me a glass of water. She turns. She walks down the aisle with her cart.

First world problems. And, yes, this is a joke.

I’m traveling Manila to Tokyo. Tokyo to Detroit. Detroit to Grand Rapids.

I’m traveling back.

Back to friends, I’m flying. Back to the familiarity of the Midwestern sensibility. Back home.

We fly above the China Sea, all of us.

We are pacified. Staring into touch-screen headrests. Eyes closed, slumped sideways. Leaning forward. Reclined, three inches back.

The old woman to my right prayed as we taxied the runway. She leans to the left when she sleeps. She has 1960’s style. She is tiny, but she takes up space. She caries herself with an air of pretentiousness. This is very Filipino.

I am sitting at the gate in Narita, in Tokyo. A recording of a women’s voices, 3 languages: English, Japanese, Chinese. Flight information. Weather. They speak like robots.

A little boy wants ice cream. He really wants ice cream. I know this because, what started as a simple question, has now become a repetitious yell, stomping, and a shaking of the chairs where I was quietly reading.

The father does nothing. This is very Filipino.

I am sitting here in the airport. Everyone goes everywhere. Nothing is going on.

I watch movies. I eat the world’s tiniest bag of peanuts. I eat a larger bag of tiny pretzels.

Coffee. Water. Green tea.

The more Americans on a plane, the worse the food becomes. We call that a correlation.

Philippines to Japan, there are ube muffins. There is flan.

Tokyo to Detroit, there is more food, but there is no flavor.

We are flying. It is night and day. We are traveling.

We head back in time.

I am in Detroit. The accent is Heartland, all the way.

The people behind me talk about their travels abroad. They are energetic and cooing about their international travel. They talk about their cruise ship experience as though they traveled in support of aiding a relief effort. They are excited about a handmade statue bought at some port where they went ashore.

I am in the Midwest. People do nothing about their children.

Everyone is humpty dumpty. Everyone walks bewildered. They move slow and they make stops. Too many stops. They stare at signs indecisively. They look at one another for answers. This is very much America.

I am with friends. Now, I am home.

The older I get, the more apprehensive I become each time I hear they're coming out with a new album... Inevitably, it takes me about one listen through for the new stuff to hook me.

Can't say I like it as fervently as Around the Fur or Adrenaline, but there's some good stuff in here (better than their last couple). I'm guessing a good part of that had to do with how old I was when I first heard those albums though, yeah? Nothing hooks you on music like hearing when you're a young, impressionable teenager.

Pool bust

These photos were from earlier this summer but I recently was just able to get my film developed. During our little drought earlier this year when we were blessed with weeks on end of great hot weather to ride bikes I had an opportunity to check out an old spot. It was the South side pool by my moms house. I scoped it out one night by myself on a solo session and realized that the hot weather had brought down the water level about 3 ft in the deep end of the pool and there was only about 3 feet left to be drained! I went back within a few days with Mac and we began to drain the pool. Unfortunately the place had been vandalized before we got there and also the neighbors ended up calling the cops on us and made for a premature end to the day and we never were able to ride the pool again. Luckily I left with new memories and some photos.... Enjoy!

I drove out to the Porcupine Mountains to do some camping, exploring and photographing, but unfortunately I was plagued by camera issues, as well as auto issues. The Jetta decided to call it quits 3 miles outside of town. I did get a few snaps with the point and shoot, so here you get a couple of postage stamp sized shots from the only trail I got to camp at. At least it was one of the best views in all of Michigan.

A good portion of the contributors to this blog are in this video (myself included, surprisingly). We're all Michigan people from the Holland area, more or less. Though, some of us have strayed a little far.

We're different ages, come from different backgrounds, and enjoy and experience different things in life. We're friends.

No matter where we end up.

We share heart, and honesty, and integrity, and confusion about life, and problems, and joys, and travels, and stories, and shared history. We'll always share these things with each other. No matter what.

My faith, My struggle

I am really struggling with my faith lately. I am having trouble with my relationship with God and if he really is good or not?

Ever since I was a little kid I always wanted and prayed to be a dad, a husband, a provider and protector. As early as I remember I had silly fantasies about saving girls that I had crushes on from fires, bullies and things of that nature always to being the hero and getting the affection of a girl as reward. So innocent and so ignorant towards life and reality. As of today I still have a hard time with these thoughts. Growing up over the years hormones, puberty and the internet fucked everything up for me. These innocent fantasies have become sexual or violent. What once was for love and honor has become vengeful and selfish. I have twisted thoughts of love and relationships now because of a childhood fairy tale thinking and the reality of the loneliness and rejection I have experienced. I still have a heart and spirit to fight for what I believe but it is continuously being beaten down and crushed by my reality. I have prayed for so long to experience a true genuine love, someone to be able to provide for and protect but my prayers have only brought pain and heartache.

I never intended to get this far with pornography, sex, lust or loneliness. All I ever wanted and prayed for were good honest things. I wanted to wait until marriage for that special someone, I wanted to be a provider, I wanted to be a protector, I wanted to be loyal. I wanted to be many things but never given a chance to be that to someone. I have extended my hand and emotions to many girls only to be given lust, dishonesty and betrayal in return.

I remained a virgin until this past year of 2012. 25 years of my existence I have held onto a thought and a hope of something that never came to be. I broke the seal this past December and ended up sleeping with 4 girls within a short period of time. 2 within the first week and another 2 over the next few months. Sex is great for the moment but sex without love is just as meaningless and selfish as masturbating before sleep. Both are as destructive as the other and possibly more when combined. I don't sleep around anymore but I still feel alone with a constant diminishing hope. I have prayed and still pray for good things only to be brought down a path of struggle and loneliness. I am lonely.

I do not understand how God says, "ask and you shall receive" and I pray for things that I feel are good and pure in intent and all I experience in life is grief, heartache, pain and loneliness. I have a hard time trusting in God and hoping and praying for good things when I don't really believe he has good things in store for me. I believe God is real and I have felt his presence in my life because of my struggles. But its hard to have faith when the thing I have been longing and praying for all these years still go unanswered.

Romans 5:3-5 is a very real verse to me because I understand and feel struggle. My personal struggles are not by any means held just to relationships either. I know struggle, I know pain, I know heartache, I know weakness, I know loneliness. Shit I have it tattooed on my body in a pictorial form because it means that much to me. I have persevered and I am continuing to persevere but also I want to be able to experience victory. Jeremiah 29:11 says ," For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." I want to believe those words. I don't want to get stuck in this fucked up cycle of struggle and perseverance without ever being able to reap the rewards of hope,character and victory. I want to have a reason to hope, something that gives me a reason to endure and persevere. I need that something that keeps me going in this life yet unfortunately at this time not much does.

Because of my personal struggles I feel a different view on death rather than most. Its not that I'm suicidal although I have been, Its the fact that I long for the day that I no longer have to endure this cursed life I've been given. This struggle and hope that is ever dwindling and teasing me like a man dangling a carrot in front of a donkey just out of reach. Hope is something to me like trying to catch the wind. I can feel it and see its effects but I never can catch it, hold it or grasp it. I feel that my hope and victory is in death. I long for the day when thoughts cease, pain no longer exists, loneliness is gone, all the superficial shit life holds to so dearly becomes meaningless just as the dirt we lay in.

Death may or may not be a long way away. In the bible the book of Ecclesiastes talks about how everything is meaningless and that all we can really do is eat, drink and try to find pleasure in our own toil. So I guess until death brings me peace I will continue to persevere and endure this shit life even in loneliness. I pray that I can understand God more over time and maybe one day I will be able to understand why my childhood prayers are still unanswered and why evil prevails and good hearts remain lonely.
