Three emerging Filipino artists lead Singapore concert

THREE emerging Filipino artists—a singer-composer, a boy band, and an acoustic princess—were chosen to lead one of the biggest Filipino independence day celebrations in the island state of Singapore this June.

The sentimental prince of Philippine music Myrus, foremost Filipino boy band 1:43, and acoustic artist Princess Velasco will be performing their latest hits, as well as covers of popular Original Pilipino Music (OPM), in a rare musical festival titled “Philippines: One World Concert 2012” on June 10 at The Coliseum of the posh Hard Rock Hotel in Resorts World, Singapore.

“Our three banner talents namely Myrus, 1:43 and Princess Velasco represent the next wave of global Filipino artists. Their songs showcase how comparable OPM is to the music of the world,” says Singaporean director Jaden Zanders of Jaz-E Entertainment, the concert organizer.

The concert aims to attract the three artists’ growing fan base in Singapore—including the OFW (Overseas Filipino Workers) population—and in the rest of Southeast Asia.

“We expect a lot of Singaporeans to watch the show. We heard that there are even Malaysian and Indonesian fans that are flying here and buying tickets just to see them,” adds Zanders.

Gold Record singer-composer Myrus recently released his second all-original album titled “Wanted” under Viva Records featuring his radio and YouTube hit “Pusong Lito.” He is an Awit Awards nominee for Best New Male Recording Artist in 2010, an ASAP 24K Awardee in 2009, and the head of an OPM advocacy program called “Tunog Natin.”

Myrus’ latest single “Pusong Lito” has gained a great deal of following online; it also became No. 1 in many radio stations in Greater Metro Manila, Cebu, Davao, Lucena, Cagayan de Oro, and Cotabato. The song’s rising popularity was aided by its initial release in over 450 Mang Inasal stores, as part of the Mang Inasal Mang Aawit Music Advocacy Campaign.

The OPM pop heartthrobs of 1:43, composed of Anjo Resurreccion, Gold Aquino, Kim Nicolas, and Yuki Sakamoto, have delivered the biggest love song of the season with their radio and YouTube monster hit song “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo.” The song is also a part of the Mang Inasal Mang Aawit Music Advocacy Campaign and was composed by Myrus.

“Sa Isang Sulyap Mo,” one of the soundtracks of the top-rating Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Teen Edition 4 in ABS-CBN, has been topping the charts of most radio stations nationwide as well as in the Pinoy Myx Countdown. Its official music video and its reposts as well as lyrics videos have garnered over five million Youtube views so far. PNU Holds Digital Education Conference for Teachers

May 7, 2012, Manila, Philippines—The Philippine Normal University (PNU), the country’s National Center for Teacher Education, conducted a conference today billed as Teaching Powered by Technology: 21^st Century Skills and Tools for Teachers at the AV Theater of Edilberto P. Earth Day: A global movement

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22 to mark the anniversary of the modern environmental movement, which began in 1970 in the United States. While the most urgent cause for protest and mass action at the time was the efforts to end the Vietnam War. The protection and preservation of the environment was not a big issue in the public arena.

All of this changed when, a year earlier, in 1969, a massive oil spill occurred in Santa Barbara, California. The founder of Earth day, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, realized the urgent need to protect the planet from the effects of pollution and other sources of environmental damage. He then set out to channel the momentum of the U.S. anti-war movement into an effort to teach people about environmental issues and spur them into action.

Senator Nelson’s efforts paid off: on April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans occupied streets, parks, and auditoriums in a demonstration that demanded more focus on the part of government and the private sector towards creating a world that promotes a sustainable lifestyle—in order to preserve and nurture our global environment and ecology for the sake of generations to come.

AXA Philippines Donates P1.7 million for the benefit of Sendong victims

Last January 31, 2012, AXA Philippines President and CEO, Rien Hermans handed over the proceeds of a month-long campaign initiated by company management to gather financial support from AXA Philippines employees and distributors for the victims of the devastating typhoon Sendong. Typhoon Sendong destroyed thousands of homes and caused millions of pesos in damages in the Northern Mindanao area in late 2011.

The amount was raised through a campaign entitled, Hearts in Action for a Million, wherein AXA Philippines employees, management and distributors contributed financial aid. Some groups even contributed their activity fund, the amount allocated for their group activity and Christmas gathering. The objective was to raise a million pesos in relief funds for the families affected by the disaster.

The campaign was a notable success, raising a total of Php2.1 million in a span of three weeks. A check for Php1.7 million was turned over to the local representative of CARE, a leading, international humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. The remainder of the proceeds was kept in trust to provide direct assistance to employees and distributors of AXA Philippines directly affected by typhoon Sendong.

In October 2011, CARE, AXA Global and Turkey together with AXA Philippines visited Camarines Sur to study the disaster risk management program implemented by CARE’s local arm, ACCORD or Assistance and Cooperation for Community Resilience and Development. Both ACCORD and CARE are working together to teach local communities to be more prepared for natural disasters and to create sustainable livelihoods to enable faster rehabilitation after such terrible events.

The Php1.7 million donated by the Hearts in Action for a Million campaign will be used to provided non-food needs (such as clothing, toiletries, and other basic necessities) of 5,000 families in Iligan who have lost their home and livelihood due to typhoon Sendong. ACCORD and CARE’s priority in the first 3 months is to deliver the necessities, such as food, water, sanitation for these families. Afterwards, they will help these families rebuild their shelter and provide livelihood support. They will also participate in risk reduction and disaster management sessions to better equip them for the uncertainties of the future. ACCORD and CARE will engage the local communities to rebuild their surroundings as well, with regular cleanup and tree-planting activities. The focus is on families in the hard-to-reach areas, and the funds will be allocated where it will create the most impact and given to where it is most needed. As of February 2012, ACCORD and CARE have reached nearly 100% of the target 5,000 families and have provided them the necessary supplies and have conducted several disaster risk management sessions as well. They aim to reach 100% by the end of March and move on to the next phase of coordinating shelter and livelihood recovery.

We have proved that through the generous hearts of employees, management and distributors of AXA Philippines, we are able to generate more than a million pesos to help our brothers and sisters in need. A small part of the proceeds was actually allocated to assist AXA employees that were affected by the typhoon Sendong. The funds raised have contributed a lot in helping families rebuild their lives. An example of such collaboration is rapper Gloc-9 and jazz singer Tricia Garcia’s recording "Kahit Maputi Na Ang Buhok Ko", which was popularized by Sharon Cuneta and written by Rey Valera. Tricia gave the song a sweet, romantic feel, while Gloc-9 added rap verses.

A showcase of talents

Filipinos are among the best singers and musicians in the world—and their talent shines brightest when they perform OPM. This is yet another reason to love original Filipino music. Homegrown artists were likewise featured in the “Tunog Natin!” concert series that Avida supported. Some of the noted performers that joined in the free OPM concerts were Jim Paredes, The Dawn, Noel Cabangon, Jaya, True Faith, Myrus, Arnee Hidalgo and Callalily, among others.

“Both the ‘Tunog Natin’ concert series and compilation album are major contributions to Filipino music. They benefit the audiences who get exposed to quality Filipino music and they help Filipino music artists as well, who get the opportunity to reach their listeners. “We are very thankful to Avida for supporting us,” says multi-awarded singer-composer Myrus.

Pinoy rock icon Pepe Smith jammed with Letter Day Story at the event held in Trinoma. Kenyo front man Mcoy Fundales, Barbie Almabis, Arnee Hidalgo, and Tanya Markova performed as well. Pop group 1:43 also wowed the crowd.

During the event at Bonifacio High Street, APO Hiking Society’s Jim Paredes performed alongside Faith Cuneta, while True Faith capped the night with a set of their hits.

Mang Inasal music advocacy releases four music videos

FILIPINO fast food chain Mang Inasal has released the first batch of the most-awaited music videos of its Mang Aawit Music Advocacy Program grantees.

The well-produced music videos of breakthrough OPM (Original Pilipino Music) artists Myrus, Aries Sales, Arnee Hidalgo and boy band 1:43 (one forty-three) have premiered in the more than 400 Mang Inasal branches across the Philippines.

“The Mang Inasal Mang Aawit Music Advocacy Program has yielded four exquisite and heartwarming songs and music videos from no less than the most talented breed of Filipino recording artists today,” said Mang Inasal General Manager Bong Abela.

“We hope that these distinctly OPM songs will become a part of the everyday lives of our loyal patrons just like their favorite Mang Inasal food,” he added.

New music videos

OPM pop heartthrobs 1:43, composed of Anjo Resurreccion, Kim Nicolas, Goldmon Aquino, and Yuki Sakamoto, present a classic love song titled “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo” in their music video. Written by Myrus and arranged by Jonathan Ong of SonicState Studio, the track is about how a simple glance can make someone fall in love.

After making their fans go gaga over their debut album “Time for Love”, Yuki, Gold, Kim, and Anjo show their romantic side in the new video as they sing the heart-felt lines: Sa isang sulyap mo ay nabihag ako/ para bang himala ang lahat ng ito/ Sa isang sulyap mo/ nabighani ako/ nabalot ng pag-asa ang puso.

Paris-based AXA Global and CARE Int’l help CamSur municipality practice disaster risk reduction

The municipality of Calabanga in Camarines Sur is now more prepared to cope with natural disasters, thanks to the efforts of an international NGO and its corporate partners. In particular, the barangay of Cagsao was selected for DRR (disaster risk reduction) efforts, due to it being at high risk of floods, storm surge and tsunami.

Paris-based AXA Global and the international Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE) of Switzerland France are partners in providing a DRR program to Calabanga municipality. The DRR program is implemented under the European Union-funded ASCEND (Advance Safer Communities and Environments against Disasters) project and implemented by CARE Philippines and its partners.

Representatives from AXA Global and AXA Turkey recently visited barangay Cagsao in the municipality of Calabanga to observe the latest developments in the DRR efforts. Their visit was assisted by AXA Philippines.

“The partnership of AXA Global and CARE are very welcome and very timely, considering that many parts of the country are vulnerable to the effects of frequent typhoons throughout the year. We at AXA Philippines support these efforts as part of the AXA Group,” said AXA Philippines President & CEO, Rien Hermans.

Caring for Calabanga

Through the years, Calabanga, one of the biggest municipalities in Camarines Sur in terms of population (73,333 ) and land area (16,384 hectares) has been terribly hit by calamities.

Located at the coast of San Miguel Bay and surrounded by Bicol and Tigman Rivers, the town is highly vulnerable to flooding. In 2004 Typhoon Unding, Violeta, Winnie and Yoyong wrought havoc to life and property; and Barangay Sibobo, between San Miguel Bay and sloping hills made even more treacherous by quarrying, became the hardest hit.

“We thought we shouldn’t stop in giving away relief goods. More than that, we should follow it up with disaster preparedness and disaster mitigation projects,” said Celso Dulce, CARE Philippines representative.

Thus, since 2007, CARE with the help of AXA Global, has not only been distributing food packs in times of calamity in Calabanga, it has also conducted numerous trainings and workshops such as Community-based Disaster Risk Management; Disaster Preparedness and Contingency Planning.

These trainings help prepare the community for future emergencies. CARE has also adopted simple action plans that have benefited the communities even more. In the Calabanga and Cagsao DRR efforts, for example, community members engage in tree planting projects, river clean-ups and gabion construction in San Miguel Bay coast--to protect the coast from storm surge and erosion.

Beyond DRR workshops

More than actual DRR training for designated officers in the community, there are other things the community needs to help them cope with and recover from disaster. CARE’s partnerships with AXA Global are also helpful in this regard.

Even as community members participate in DRR seminars and conduct risk reduction efforts, the community also receives food packs and livelihood training through the help of CARE and AXA Global.

Some examples of these food security and livelihood projects include the donation of farm animals like carabaos, farm trucks and also free seminars on tilapia-raising. According to Dulce, poverty limits the people’s capacity to cope with disasters so there’s a need to strengthen their livelihood.

Education: Starting DRR early

AXA Global and CARE are also helping in efforts to educate children in high-risk communities about DRR.

And so, aside from the 3Rs (Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic) -- the foundations of a basic skills-oriented education--the students in Calabanga, Camarines Sur are learning another big R: Risk reduction.

In one session, Grade One teacher Norma Guiriba of Cagsao Elementary School flashed illustrations of children in various situations that show good and bad practice in disaster prevention. The children were asked to identify each situation and flash a cardboard happy or sad face to indicate their approval and disapproval. They got it all right.

The lesson plan consists of identification of hazards; routes of action before, during or after the calamity; including preventive measures to mitigate the unfavorable effects of climate change. This knowledge could mean life and death to people in Cagsao.

“We laud the project because the children learn a lot from it at an early age,” says Antonio Endani Jr., principal of Cagsao Elementary School. “More importantly, they know that they can do something about it,” said AXA Philippines President & CEO, Rien Hermans.

CSR as a way of life

According to Amandine Soulier, AXA Global’s Corporate Responsibility Philantrophy Manager, who was part of the delegation to Calabanga, AXA practices social responsibility as part of its corporate culture.

“Corporate social responsibility is not an external department; it’s a way of thinking differently,” said Soulier,. “We like to anchor people to be more responsible.”

Soulier added that helping poor communities is a must in reducing the risk posed by natural disasters due to climate change. “Climate change has a huge impact on poor people. The fight against climate change is a fight against poverty,” she said.

Dulce looks forward to doing Disaster Risk Reduction Management in a larger scale soon with AXA Global.

“Our projects in Calabanga have become a model framework for other similar endeavors, in fact, its mayor (Calabanga Mayor Evelyn Yu) presented her municipality’s best DRR practice in Phuket, Thailand recently,” Dulce revealed.

This came on the heels of a 2009 Gawad Kalasag (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) award for Calabanga given by National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council (NDRRMC).

Dulce said that CARE, with the help of AXA Global, will undertake DRR trainings nationwide in cooperation with Department of Interior and Local Government as well as the Department of Education.
