Aloha! Welcome to the Hawaiian division of Eat Sleep Golf! The 2013 season is well underway and the courses and weather are both fantastic. We'll continue with our industry analysis throughout the 2013 season in order to provide some great recommendations and hopefully introduce you to some new and creative perspectives.

At Eat Sleep Golf we've got two main focuses:

We aspire to be a leading source and a go to spot for everything golf within the Hawaiian Islands. Fowler Re-Signs As Global Bushnell Golf Brand Ambassador Through 2014 Season

Bushnell Contributes $145,000 to Folds of Honor Foundation

Overland Park, KS, February 15, 2013 – Bushnell Outdoor Products, makers of the No. 1 Laser Rangefinder on the PGA Tour for more than a decade, has announced its 2012 contribution to the Folds of Honor Foundation will total $145,000. Since establishing a partnership in 2010, Bushnell has contributed more than $450,000 to the foundation, supporting the spouses and children of disabled or fallen soldiers.

In an effort to continue its support of the Folds of Honor Foundation (FHF), Bushnell will make two new Patriot Packs available in 2013 featuring the Tour v3 and Tour v3 Slope. A percentage of every 2013 sale of the Bushnell Patriot Packs will be provided to the foundation’s fundraising efforts. It's been an interesting start to the 2013 PGA Tour season at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. After multiple starts and stops over the weekend, today tournament play was finally able to progress through the the first 18 holes.

This has undoubtedly been a test of mental toughness over the past few days for all the players at this event. After 18 holes, here's what the current leaderboard looks like:

Featured Pairings for Round 1 of Hyundai TOC

There are just 30 players in the field this week at the no-cut Hyundai Tournament of Champions, which begins Friday in Hawaii. Here are three pairings to watch during the first round on the Plantation Course at Kapalua (for complete tee times, click here):

Jason Dufner-Rickie Fowler, No. 1 tee at 3:35 p.m. ET Friday
Dufner is coming off a breakthrough season in which he won twice, missed only one cut and earned more than $4.8 million. Fowler also notched his first career PGA Tour title, at theWells Fargo Championship, but a lingering back injury derailed what had been a promising season. This pairing is particularly juicy, however, because of their good-natured (and monthslong) feud on Twitter. If we’re lucky, there will be some friendly fire before and after Friday’s opening round.

Matt Kuchar-Webb Simpson, No. 1 tee at 3:45 p.m. ET Friday
This group may lack pyrotechnics, but both players are near-locks to be toward the top of the leaderboard come Monday evening. Kuchar, a winner at the Players, has a strong record at Kapalua, finishing T-6 and solo third in 2011 and ’10, respectively. Last year, in his first start on the Plantation Course, Simpson shot all four rounds in the 60s and finished T-3.

Dustin Johnson-Bubba Watson, No. 1 tee at 5:45 p.m. ET Friday
Kapalua is a bomber’s paradise, so it was little surprise to see these two titanium-denting talents paired together. The par-5 finishing hole on the Plantation Course has yielded 92 drives of 400-plus yards since 2003. Perhaps it’s no coincidence, then, that this week Golf Channel will debut a new graphic, “Landing Zone,” which will measure the yardage of tee shots, similar to the yellow first-down lines on NFL telecasts. Prepare for an impromptu long-drive contest.

Rory McIlroy Tops World Money List

KAPALUA, Hawaii – Rory McIlroy is atop the world money list published each year in the ''Year in Professional Golf,'' the comprehensive golf annual that was started by IMG founder Mark McCormack. The list includes money earned from every golf tournament, even unofficial events such as the Father-Son Challenge and PGA Grand Slam.

McIlroy's five wins included the PGA Championship and two FedEx Cup playoff events. He finished with $11,301,228.

Justin Rose was No. 2 with $7,897,818, even though he won only once on the PGA Tour at the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral. Rose also won the Turkish Airways World Golf Final, the medal-match exhibition that attracted a world-class field of eight players. Rose beat Lee Westwood in the final match to earn $1.5 million.

Tiger Woods, with three wins, was at No. 3 with $7,388,061. He was followed by Luke Donald(three wins) and Louis Oosthuizen (two wins).

Rounding out the top 10 were Jason Dufner, Brandt Snedeker, Westwood, Bubba Watson and Keegan Bradley. Watson (Masters) and Bradley (WGC-Bridgestone Invitational) were the only players in the top 10 who had only one win last year.

2013 PGA Season - Right Around the Corner

The 2013 PGA Tour season is right around the corner, kicking off on January 3rd right here from the Hawaiian Islands! The Hyundai Tournament of Champions will mark the first tournament of the season, being played at the Plantation Course at Kapalua in Kapalua Maui.

Jimenez, 48, Sets Record with Hong Kong Title

As much as I love seeing the next generation of golfers moving up the rankings, I have to admit, I like it even more when a guy like Miguel Angel Jimenez at age 48 takes down a tournament!

The Most Interesting Man in Golf is now also the European Tour’s oldest winner.

Forty-eight-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez continued his love affair with the UBS Hong Kong Open on Sunday by closing with a 5-under 65 to win by one. It was his third career title at that event.

At 48 years and 318 days, Jimenez became the oldest winner of a European Tour event, surpassing Des Smyth’s record (48 years, 34 days) from 2001.

“It’s an honor to set this record,” Jimenez told reporters afterward, “and I hope it’s not the last one.”

Twelve of his 19 career European Tour titles have come after turning 40. His third Hong Kong title – the Spaniard also won in 2005 and ’08 – didn’t come easily, as he had to hold off a hard-charging Fredrik Andersson Hed (64) to win by one.

Michael Campbell, mired in a miserable slump since his last victory in 2005, held a share of the 54-hole lead. But a 2-over 72 in the final round dropped him into joint eighth, seven shots behind. American Matt Kuchar finished solo seventh.

Ala Wai is a fun 18 hole regulation course located at the Ala Wai Golf Course facility in Honolulu, HI. From the longest tees it features 6,208 yards of golf for a par of 70. The course was designed by Donald MacKay and opened in 1931.

Hawaii Ironman

This weekend marks one of the biggest endurance events to visit the islands, the Hawaii Ironman. Taking place in Kailua-Kona on the big island, the scope of this triathlon is really mind boggling. It consists of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run!

If you're in the area, I highly recommend checking it out. Here's a little more history on this epic event...

The inaugural “Hawaiian IRON MAN Triathlon” was conceptualized in 1977 as a way to challenge athletes who had seen success at a local biathlon. San Diego-based John Collins proposed combining the three toughest endurance races in Hawai’i – the 2.4-mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, 112 miles of the Around-O’ahu Bike Race and the 26.2-mile Honolulu Marathon – into one event.

On Feb. 18, 1978, 15 people came to Waikiki to take on the IRONMAN challenge. Prior to racing, each received three sheets of paper with a few rules and a course description. The last page read: “Swim 2.4 miles! Bike 112 miles! Run 26.2 miles! Brag for the rest of your life!”

In 1981, the race moved from the tranquil shores of Waikiki to the barren lava fields of Kona on the Big Island of Hawai’i. Along the Kona Coast, black lava rock dominates the panorama, and athletes battle the “ho’omumuku” crosswinds of 45 mph, 95 degree temperatures and a scorching sun.

Now in its 34th year, the IRONMAN World Championship centers on the dedication and courage exhibited by participants who demonstrate the Ironman mantra that “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. ®” On Oct. 13, nearly 1,800 athletes will embark on a 140.6-mile journey that presents the ultimate test of body, mind and spirit to earn the title of “IRONMAN.”

As I get older and my golf game starts to decline, it's encouraging to see the next generation of golfers starting to take shape. Last weekend the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association (HSJGA) conducted the final round of the 2012 Mixed Team Championship at Poipu Bay Golf Course. The team of Hana Furuichi and Kengo Aoshima finished in first place with a total score of 139. Second went to Aiko Leong and Shawn Lu (142) and third, Ciera Min and Tyler Munetake (146)

The Mixed Team Championship consisted of two-person teams–one boy and one girl from the 13 – 18 age division. The first round was played using Four-Ball Stroke Play and the second was played using Foursome Stroke Play. The challenging Poipu Bay Course played 6,117 yards for the Girls 13-18 and 6,499 yards for the Boys 13-18.

The Mixed Team Championship helps prepare Hawaii Team members compete in the similar Ryder Cup format Asia Pacific Junior Cup being played against the top junior golfers from Japan during the 6th annual Asia Pacific Junior Cup, happening November 1-3 at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course on the Big Island.

Keep it on the short grass, but more importantly, have fun out there!

The course was built to preserve the naturally twisting landscapes of the underlying valley. Compared with many of the flatter courses on the island of Oahu, it has a uniquely characterized landscape with many hills and valleys.

Within the course are about 200 natural Monkey Pod Trees, which is an important factor to consider when mastering the course. Since every hole is so rich in variety, playing at this challenging course will surely be an event to remember for a long time.

Accuracy and calmness are the keys to successful scoring, rather than long-range driving, since the overall distances are not very long. Although the greens may not be very fast, please do watch out for the slopes. If you only look at the grass without judging the slopes correctly, you can very easily putt 3 or 4 times.

As long as you watch out for the above points, this course can be enjoyed by a wide variety of players, beginners as well as advanced players, junior as well as senior players. If you know the basics of golf, you can expect to get good scores.

Kauai - The Garden Island

It's no secret to those who have been to the island of Kaua'i that it truly is a tropical paradise. I came across this article published in 'Nevada Fairways 18' magazine introducing Kaua'i to their readers...

The island of Kaua'i has long been known for its tranquility and rejuvenation. But after a two-year span that has seen many of its golf course resorts undergo substantial enhancement projects, the Garden Isle is beginning to draw more and more travelers with golf clubs in tow. GOLF Magazine's biennial 2012 Best Courses You Can Play list was released earlier this month and Kaua'i courses held four of the top eight spots in the state rankings for Hawaii. The newly renovated Prince Course at Princeville Golf Club is the No. 1-ranked course in Hawaii and also landed at No. 16 on the magazine's "Top-100 Courses You Can Play list. Following the Prince Course in the state rankings are Makai Golf Club at Princeville at No. 5, Kaua'i Lagoons Golf Club at No. 7, Poipu Bay Golf Club at No. 8 and Puakea Golf Course at No. 17.

The Prince Course at Princeville rose from No. 22 in 2010 to its current No. 16 raking in the Top-100 after completing a 15-month renovation program in March. In addition, Kaua'i Lagoons Golf Club, located next to the Kaua'i Marriott Resort & Beach Club, soared from No. 18 in the 2010 "Best-Of" state rankings to No. 7 this year, after opening the new Kiele Moana (Ocean) Course in May, a course that offers the longest stretch of continuous ocean holes in all of Hawaii. Makai Golf Club at Princeville - which completed a multi-million dollar renovation in 2010 - improved three spots.

Poipu Bay Golf Club, the former home of the PGA Grand Slam and an amenity of the Grand Hyatt Kaua'i Resort & Spa, re-opened in December 2010 to rave reviews after installing the eco-friendly Seashore Paspalum turf on all greens. Puakea Golf Course is annually included among Hawaii's best courses in national rankings and is situated at the base of towering Mount Haupu, providing striking views of the land where the blockbuster motion picture Jurassic Park was filmed.

Old School Golfer - New School Golf Balls

I'm not shy about admitting that I don't have the prettiest of golf swings, but I've learned to live with it. I hit the ball relatively straight, just not as long as some guys. So, I do my best to keep it between the ditches on the short grass and play a percentage game. I've given lessons a try a few times, but over time, I always seem to slowly steer back to my old style. I suppose there's a reason for the saying 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks'. Although I may be stuck in my ways in a sense, I still like to try the 'new and improved' golf products that hit the market.

Recently I was fortunate to be introduced to a new golf ball manufacturer called Vision Golf. From the moment I saw them I could tell they weren't like your everyday golf ball. Have a look at the picture to the left and I think you'll see what I mean. Coming in an array of colors, the cover also has a unique look to it. It's personal preference, but I for one enjoy playing with something a little unique and original. But enough about the look, lets find out how they perform.

I took them out for a test run last week, and was pleased with the way the felt. I typically like to play a softer ball, and the Vision ball seemed to be right on par with what I usually look for. But wait, the best is yet to come! By far, the coolest of the Vision balls was the 808 prototype ball. It performed really well, and as you can see from the picture below, it has a UV retaining cover which makes it glow in the dark!! I've seen other glow in the dark golf balls, where the golf ball has a hole through it and you insert a little glow stick. The flaw in that system is obvious, throwing off the balance of the ball. But the Vision ball, is by far the highest performing glow ball I've ever seen.

Fantasy Picks - Tour Championship

I realize it's late in the season, but it was recommended to me to give fantasy golf a try, so I hit up the Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Golf website to check it out. This week is the TOUR Championship which is arguably one of the most exciting tournaments of the season.

Although many experts seem to be picking Rory as the tournament favorite (and with good reason), I've made my picks based on experience. As an aging man myself, I can appreciate the benefits and wisdom that comes along with years of experience. As the season wraps up, and the tension thickens I want players on my team who've been there before. These guys include, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els and Steve Stricker.

I hate to admit that as I've aged, I'm slowly becoming the suborn old man that I used to laugh at as a child. Technology, mobile communication, social media etc have become an integral part of nearly every industry, which is why I've decided to make a conscious effort to become more involved.

I find it difficult to sit in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time, when I could be out on the golf course, at the beach, fishing or a long list of other outdoor activities. It also doesn't help, living in an island paradise like Hawaii, where we have these types of views to keep us off the couch...

I am starting to understand the benefits of social media as they relate to business, and how it can help with the interaction with customers and potential customers. As I continue my journey into this digital realm, I'll be sharing more of my progress on this blog, on Facebook and on Twitter. I'd love for you to follow along. I'll try to give insight into how these platforms can be useful in a business sense, share some of the amazing things happening here in Hawaii as well as highlight some current technology advancements as they relate to the golfing world.
