<p>We are all born with a very high alkaline blood ph of 7.4. Over the years as we age this ph level gets more acidic. An acidic environment is like a magnet for all diseases. It also speeds up the aging process. So if the aging process is to be slowed down and lost years regained then one must work towards a high alkaline blood ph.</p>
<p>Alkaline blood can be achieved only by consuming alkaline food and drinking alkaline water. What we eat is who we are. So if one eats vegetables like broccoli, watercress, spinach and carrots, and so on we will be making our alkaline blood better. On the other hand consuming acidic foods leaves our blood acidic. All the toxins from within our body are expelled out of the urine or by sweating. So if these toxins do not get a release, our body cells fall prey to them and begin ageing. Ever wondered why younger people are more energetic that older ones. Well! The answer is simple. Younger people carry more hydroxyl ions than hydrogen ions. The former gives oxygen while the later is an oxygen taker. More oxygen means added energy. There is thus a great need to eat alkaline foods so as to release more oxygen and thus derive more energy from it. Alkaline blood simply keeps the oxygen levels high in our arteries and so prevents the cells from degeneration and therefore aging.</p>
<p>Another good example of benefits of alkaline blood is arthritis and gout prevention as well as cure. Uric acid is not easily dissolvable. Water, alcohol as well as ether all fail to dissolve uric acid, but it easily dissolves in alkaline salts and alkaline water. Thus alkaline blood helps rid the body of uric acid which is the root cause of arthritis and gout. These ailments are caused by uric acid deposits between the joints of the body. The older we get the more likely we are to suffer from arthritis and similar diseases. This is because the older we gets the more our alkaline blood drops its alkalinity thus resulting in uric acid deposits in the body.</p>
<p>When our body gets sluggish and weak we refer to it as the aging process. But this aging is caused by deposits of acids at various points in the body. If we can rid the body of the various wastes and toxins we shall be able to slow down the aging process. This is called anti aging. Only alkaline blood will be able to flush all the toxins and wastes out of the body. Therefore an alkaline blood ph of at least 7.4 must be maintained. To maintain a high alkaline blood ph at least 80% of our total food intake must comprise of alkaline foods and no more than a maximum of 20 % acidic foods</p>
<p>To sum up it would be best to say that alkaline blood is in direct indirect proportion to aging. The more the alkalinity of blood the less we will age.</p>

For the latter reason, <a href="http://www.ehow.com/sports/">sports</a> personnel and kettlebellers are recommended to have diets which are rich with this alkaline salt. Research shows that the intake of sodium carbonate reduces work-related stress, thus avoiding the psychological dangers that prolonged stress can present.</strong><strong></strong></p>

<p>I hesitated about writing this post because it is so personal, but then I decided that people need to know about this, so if sharing my own journey can help someone else I’m willing to do it.</p>
<h3>Candida</h3>
<p>For those of you who don’t know, Candida is one of many fungi that lives in your digestive tract. More precisely, it is a yeast, and an overgrowth causes yeast infections, something I have suffered from for years without realizing. The first time I ever heard about Candida was through <a href="http://www.totalwellnesscleanse.com">Total Wellness Cleanse</a>.</p>
<p>There are several different ways to get an overgrowth of Candida, one of which is the use of antibiotics since these kill all bacteria, the good and the bad and, as most things go, the bad repopulate faster. So make sure to supplement with a good probiotic after taking an antibiotic to ensure the repopulation of the good bacteria.</p>
<p>There are also other causes such as diabetes, stress, fatigue, birth control pills, a compromised immune system, and the list goes on.</p>
<h3>Diagnosing Candida</h3>
<p>This can be tricky, but there is a simple at home test I used just to be sure. Although I already was sure, I just wanted to see if it would work.</p>
<p>Before going to bed, place a glass of water at your bedside and then first thing in the morning, before doing anything else, spit into the glass of water. Make sure to get enough to coat the top and then watch over the next half hour. If your saliva is clean, it should dissolve and the water remain clear. If it becomes cloudy, sinks to the bottom, grows “roots”, or cloudy specks are suspended in the water, chances are you have Candida.</p>
<p>For me, by the time I stopped spitting after a couple minutes (I wanted to be good and sure I had an adequate amount) it was already clear I had a problem. I didn’t need to wait a half hour, my saliva had already grown roots. Okay, now that I know, time to do something about it.</p>
<h3>Conquering Candida</h3>
<p>It isn’t easy trying to get an overgrowth under control. Sure there are treatments you can buy at the pharmacy, but they only treat localized symptoms, not the cause. If you want to treat Candida naturally, diet is the first step.</p>
<p>Fortunately for me, since I had just completed Yuri’s <a href="http://totalwellnesscleanse.com">Total Wellness Cleanse</a>, I already had my eating habits under control.</p>
<p>Candida thrives on sugar, and sugar is everywhere! It’s more than just the obvious sources like sugar cane, honey, syrup, etc, it’s in fruit and simple carbohydrates such as white flour that breaks down into glucose. In order to conquer Candida, you need to eliminate sugar from your diet.</p>
<p><strong>No Sugar.</strong></p>
<p>I know. It’s tough. But a vital component.</p>
<p>For me, the hardest part has been not eating the fruits I love. There are only a few “low” sugar fruits I eat, such as grapefruit, apples, pears and occasionally strawberries and cherries while they were in season, and I keep it to 1-2 servings a day. If I bake, I use Stevia, which I also was already doing.</p>
<p><strong>Simple Carbs</strong></p>
<p>This one was easy since I had already eliminated them from my diet, but I went a step further and completely removed anything with gluten. This helps promote a healthy digestive tract and many people are intolerant of gluten to begin with. If I bake, I use brown rice flour and I enjoy it. I also replaced my whole wheat pasta with brown rice pasta and quinoa.</p>
<p>I plan on adhering to this diet strictly for a minimum of six months, which will take me to the end of 2010. Two months down, four to go. I am looking forward to all the fruit smoothies I dearly want to try.</p>
<p><strong>Supplements</strong></p>
<p>I’ve never liked taking pills. Never. I was in my early twenties before I could even swallow them, which I learned to do after being put on antibiotics for an ear infection. In order to give my body a fighting chance, I’m taking the following:</p>
<ul>
<li>Vitamin C &#8211; to help boost my immune system</li>
<li>Quercetin &#8211; a bioflavonoid (often taken with Vit C and is an anti-histamine/anti-inflammatory)</li>
<li>Zinc &#8211; to help with adrenal fatigue (which Candida sufferers most likely have)</li>
<li>B-Complex &#8211; boosts immune system function</li>
</ul>
<p>This was added to the whole food based Multi-Vitamin, antioxident, and Omega-3 pills I was taking, along with probiotics and enzymes.</p>
<p>Sometimes my body rebels and says, nope, I’m not swallowing another pill, especially the horse-pill of a multi-vitamin I’m taking three times a day. Sometimes I feel like such a pill-popper. It’s been a month and it’s become easier. I’m looking forward to when I can cut back, but plan on supplementing for at least another month. There were even more supplements I could take, but I had to pick my battles and take the ones I thought would help me the most.</p>
<p><strong>Killing Candida with Anti-Fungals</strong></p>
<p>There are several natural foods and remedies you can take to help reduce Candida. The ones I’m taking are:</p>
<ul>
<li>Garlic (raw, minced and added to my foods)</li>
<li>Caprylic acid (found in coconuts and I cook with coconut oil)</li>
<li>Oregeno Oil (which is good for many other things)</li>
<li>Grapefruit Seed Extract (which I alternate with the Oregeno Oil)</li>
<li>Pau D’Arco (in tea form)</li>
</ul>
<h3>The Next Step</h3>
<p>Following the program I’m on, the next step is a parasite cleanse. I’ve already purchased the kit, and probably in October I’ll use it. Then it also recommends heavy metal removal and a liver flush, both of which are further down the road.</p>

<p>The above is hardly exhaustive, and barely touches the information available, including the many symptoms, remedies to reduce symptoms, the importance of sleep, stress reduction, alkalinity, and so much more.</p>

Many listen politely and do nothing. Others ask questions and do nothing. As you have already guessed, most do nothing about anything I say.</em></strong></p>
<p>Changing strategies was very difficult because Pierrette &amp; I are so clear about all the benefits that Eating For Energy has done for us. Well, that is what needs to be done if you want to remain committed to yourself and if you want to spread the joy of feeling and being full of energy.</p>
<p><strong><em>If you want to show people what you are doing, be Hands On. Show them how to juice and have them taste the best drinks in the world.</em></strong></p>
<p>If your daughter has a boyfriend, have him over and <strong>show him</strong>. Do you understand what I am saying? Stop talking about it and do it!</p>
<p><strong><em>Many of you will read this article and say, yeah, yeah, easier said then done. So did I but, as my energy level increased and became a part of my daily life I soon discovered that talking served no purpose whatsoever.</em></strong></p>
<p>Pierrette has a printed copy(photocopied) of the <a href="http://www.eatingforenergy.ca/?hop=peterette">Eating For Energy</a> book on our kitchen table at all times. When people are around we take the time, argue a little but always have people taste test a smoothie or other juice and the faces tell us what to do next.</p>
<ul>
<li>People only believe what they can touch, smell, see or taste.</li>
<li>Stop talking and have taste test available. Don&#8217;t ask, just have them taste. It is incredible how people&#8217;s faces light up.</li>
<li>Be bold and direct, you have nothing but good health to sell. How much is that worth?</li>
</ul>
<p><strong><em>Becoming &#8220;Hands On&#8221; is the only way to get your message across.</em></strong></p>

<p><img src="http://eatingforenergy.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/motivation.jpg" alt="motivation" width="99" height="122" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1172" />Now a lot of people lack motivation to do anything let alone exercise because most of us today are struggling with extreme fatigue, lethargy and an overwhelming feeling of tiredness.</p>
<p>So how do you find the motivation to exercise when you’ve lost it (or perhaps never had it?)</p>
<p>By making a <strong>conscious decision to improve your health.</strong></p>
<p>You see most things are easy to do, but they’re also easy not to do. And for most people, they take the easiest option.</p>
<p>Let’s take getting up and off the couch to go for a walk, as an example. You can make the choice to go for that walk, or you can take the lazy option and stay put on the couch. The trouble with most people is that they take the lazy option which of course <strong>leads to weight gain, feeling more lethargic and poor health.</strong></p>
<p>Exercise and eating the right foods, just like Yuri explains in his book &#8211; <a href="http://eatingforenergy.ca">Eating for Energy</a>, is absolutely essential if you are serious about achieving good good health. </p>
<p>Using excuses or any other reasons why you can’t exercise is not going to help you to improve your health.</p>
<p>If you fail to exercise, this neglect or laziness causes your body to become just that – neglected, soft, lazy and fat. <strong>When you don’t exercise you are actually depleting your energy levels even more</strong>. Studies have shown that a lack of exercise can also lead to boredom and depression.</p>
<p>So make the decision to get out and do some exercise. Have your joggers and exercise gear ready to go … staring at you in the face as soon as you get up, or in the way so that you literally have to step over them to get through your front door.</p>
<p>In time you will see your muscles grow and the fat go away which should be enough motivation to keep you on track.</p>
<p>Bad habits can wait on you forever, in fact they don’t really ever go away. They will always be there, just around the corner, lurking and looking for an opening. But <strong>don’t wait until you have a heart attack before you remember you have a body!</strong></p>
<p>Fat, unhappy and slumped on the couch versus looking trim, energized and glowing with health? I know which one I’d rather choose.  How about you?</p>

<h3>H2O aka Water</h3>
<p><img class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1158" src="http://eatingforenergy.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/HPIM1628-150x150.jpg" alt="HPIM1628" width="150" height="150" />I finally purchased a water filtration system a few weekends ago.</p>
<p>One of the reasons I held off buying this was price. The model online I was looking at was very expensive, but this was something I didn’t want to compromise on since I would have it for a long time and would be using it everyday. Thankfully I found a reasonably priced one at a local health food store. It has everything I was looking for. It:</p>
<ul>
<li>Filters unwanted chemicals like chlorine</li>
<li>Mineralises the water</li>
<li>Alkalizes the water</li>
<li>Is a countertop model</li>
<li>Requires simple maintenance</li>
</ul>
<p>I really wanted to purchase some litmus paper and test the PH blanace of the filtered water compared to my tap water and show you guys in the photo, but do you think I could find any? Alas, it was not meant to be, so for now I’m just going to have to trust the claim that it alkalizes my water.</p>
<p>The second reason I delayed this purchase was that my tap water tastes good. Taste wise, I don’t notice any difference between the two. I know in the larger cities the tap water tastes awful, and I can’t even stand to brush my teeth with it, but where I live it tastes clean. But because I know it still has bad things like chlorine in it (even if I don’t notice) I bought the filtration system, and if nothing else, it makes me feel better.</p>
<h3>Juicing</h3>
<p><img class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1160" src="http://eatingforenergy.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/HPIM1625-150x150.jpg" alt="HPIM1625" width="150" height="150" />Another purchase I recently made was a food emulsifier. I liked it because I could make both smoothies and juices without any waste. Well, my first attempt at making a juice was a disaster, and I’ve discovered there is a definite learning curve to using this thing.</p>
<p>The emulsifier works differently than a juicer in that you put the whole vegetable in and it pulverizes it into a liquid. Following Yuri’s recipe for Green Revolution, the result was a thick goopy mess, so I added some water to thin it out. Then I added more water and ran it for several minutes. It worked, except the friction from the blade heated the juice! Trust me, warm green juice isn’t the greatest. So I put it in the fridge (the entire jug full) and let it cool.</p>
<p>The end result: I still didn’t like it (Sorry, Yuri.) I did drink most of it because I committed so much food to its making and I knew it was good for me, but never again. My emulsifier also sat unused for a week.</p>
<p>The next weekend I tried something simpler: kale, spinach and an apple. I also added water right from the start and didn’t run it as long. This time, I like what I got &#8211; a green juice that tastes like apple. I haven’t used it again, but I hope to utilize it more in the future and make yummy smoothies and juices to drink.</p>
<p>I bought some frozen berries to make some “ice-cream” instead of using frozen bananas. I’m looking forward to it.</p>

<p><img src="http://eatingforenergy.ca/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/green-juice.bmp" alt="green juice" class="alignright size-full wp-image-1152" />Now if you are a shift worker and I asked you this question, “Are you in search of more energy?” you would probably look at me a bit strangely. Considering the majority of shift workers wander around in a sleep-deprived state, a lack of energy certainly rates high amongst the Top 10 Shift Work Struggles.</p>
<p>Which is exactly why <strong>every single shift worker needs to be turning green</strong>, and it has nothing to do with trying to save the environment!</p>
<p>Confused?</p>
<p>Well let me explain. You see as a fellow shift worker I had to start at 0430am this morning so I was woken up by that nasty little invention called the Alarm Clock, at 0350am. Not a particularly friendly time of the “day” as you can imagine, but I staggered out of bed and jumped into the shower to wake myself up into some kind of semi-conscious state.</p>
<p>I had packed my lunchbox the night before, but this time I decided to try something different. <strong>I decided to make myself a raw vegetable juice to drink at the start of my shift</strong>, to see if it was going to increase my energy.</p>
<p>Now I have always been a fan of juices, thanks to Yuri&#8217;s book &#8211; <a href="http://eatingforenergy.ca">&#8216;Eating For Energy&#8217;</a>, but I had never actually made one to take into work &#8211; I would always drink it at home.</p>
<p>So after a couple of hours at work, I decided to dig out my Green Raw Energy juice from the fridge – which comprised of <strong>green apples, carrots, spinach, cabbage, celery and pomegranate juice,</strong> and sat down to drink it.</p>
<p><strong>Within half an hour I was feeling fantastic! </strong></p>
<p>Unlike heavy processed foods, as Yuri explains in his book &#8211; <a href="http://eatingforenergy.ca">Eating For Energy</a>, <strong>juices are really fast and easy to digest</strong> which enables you to reap the benefits of a boost in energy, not long after drinking it. </p>
<p>Heavy processed foods on the other hand can absolutely <strong>drain you of ener</strong>gy because the body struggles to digest anything that it’s not familiar with – that is, anything that is not a whole food, just like nature designed it.</p>
<p>So next time you’re on an early shift, or you have to go in for the dreaded night shift – try packing yourself a Raw Green Energy Juice. <p>Well, Ive just completed a 10 day juice fast &amp; am transistioning back to my mainly raw diet&#8230;.I feel really great, Ive trimmed off a few kilos as well and am just about to head off overseas!!!  I surely dont want to undo the good things Ive done &amp; I think I will probably end up eating more cooked foods than I would prefer but I will just take each day as it comes.  Lots of walking &amp; sightseeing will help with exercise piece of the puzzle &amp; I know my yoga routine pretty well now.  Cheese is going to be the big challenge for me as I really love the stuff and France has the best cheeses on earth (in my opinion) so I dont think there is any chance of me not eating some of it!!!  I will try to eat it with fruit rather than bread, if I can!!!  Otherwise the mediterranean countries are great for vegetable dishes so I think it will be fine.  Good thing about the juice fast is that I feel very light &amp; dont want to eat too much at one sitting so I think I may have conquered portion control!</p>
<p>Will try to post while away, to give an update but not sure how often I am going to be near a computer.  Anyway, sun and warm weather, beautiful beaches usually means salads and fruit is all you want!   I am looking forward to my challenge of maintaining my weight and relaxing &amp; enjoying my holiday.</p>

<p>If you are like me, you are a perfectionist. You try to get 100% involved in everything you do and do your best no matter if it is business, sports, school or any aspect of your life. After starting the <a href="http://www.eatingforenergy.ca/">Eating for Energy</a> Program, I had the chance to apply this philosophy to my nutrition and my diet, but found myself discovering another aspect of my personality that I had not realize.</p>
<p>Just as much as I go out of my way to give the best in me I found myself using an all in or all out mentality to my diet. The meaning of this is that I was saying to myself, if I am not eating perfectly then I might as well not eat good at all.</p>
<p>Well, this is the part in where many of you will see yourself reflected. How many times have you ruined a whole week of healthy eating, just because you had some cake at the office on Wednesday and decided to succumb into craving for the rest of the week? Well, this is exactly what I found myself doing, If I had just a piece of red meat at lunch then it seem reasonable to repeat that at dinner time and maybe add some french-fries or ice cream to top it off. Worst-case scenario, this type of behavior would extend to the rest of the week or month.  During all this process the mantra that kept repeating in my mind was, “ what’s the case of eating healthy today if I already put something unhealthy in my body”</p>
<p>Thankfully, I was able to spot this erroneous and self-destructive behavior. I was also able to understand why was this happening and how to fix it. And now, I want to share my realizations in some easy steps that you can fallow to stop this behavior forever.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong><em>Relax:</em></strong> One of the things I realize is that my perfectionism was creating lots of stress and was making me look at little slips like mayor setbacks. So, the first thing to do is to relax and understand that if you slip in one meal is not the end of the world. If you need prove just think about this, one lunch is less than 4 % of your week of meal (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and even less if you eat the recommended 5-6 times per day. So, if you are sticking to your plan 80% of the time one or two slips along the way will not undermine your nutrition.</li>
<li><strong><em>2. </em></strong><strong><em>Understand that Health is a process: </em></strong>Healthy living is a never-ending process, is not about your last meal but about your next meal. Is not about your last bite but your next one. So, if you find yourself eating cheeseburgers and fries for lunch, you do not have to wait until the next week to eat healthy because is the next meal that counts. Remember, your body is designed to heal itself and provide energy 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, so anytime is the right time to eat healthy no matter what happened in the past.

<li><strong><em>3. </em></strong><strong><em>Finally, enjoy:</em></strong> The best part of eating healthy is that you can afford to slip one or twice every once in a while (but with time you will not feel the need to succumb to your cravings any more). So, next time your friends invite you for some beer and nachos relax and enjoy. It will do your body a lot of good and it will help you to get back on track on your next meal<strong><em></em></strong></li>
