What is eBay?

EBay is the world’s biggest online auction website. Knowing how auctions work will help you a lot to understand the basics of eBay. If you have something that you want to sell you add it to the auction site, then interested buyers come along and place their bids.

The buyer who offers the best price gets the product. It is as simple as a conventional auction. The only difference in these two is that it is an online auction and the conventional auctions are done in a location.

On eBay you can buy or sell almost everything. Small or big, all products get equal opportunity to get advertised on eBay. It’s a persuasive blend of an auction and a worldwide marketplace.

What is Bidding?

Bidding is the process where you say how much you will pay for an item in an auction. Bidding on eBay, works somewhat in the same way as a normal auction, however not exactly. The basic theory is the same though. Unless the item is listed under “Buy It Now”, then it can take up to 7 days or more for the final bid. Unlike conventional auctions.

How Do I Bid?

Once you have registered at ebay, you will want to locate the box marked “search”: Type the name of a product in which you are interested. Now you have a list of items for sale in front of you for the item you searched, along with the bid amount and the time when the bid concludes for each item.

Click on one of them, whichever one you feel is the best, you can get the full description, images and any other details that you may need to know. If you have some queries you may seek answers for that from the seller. And if you are happy with the answers and glad to pay more than what the existing highest bidder is paying, – you can place your bid!

Just scroll down to the bottom of an item’s description page, place the maximum you are willing to pay. Then press the ‘place bid’ button – If your maximum bid on that item is lower than that already exists, eBay will give you the chance to bid once more. And now you are the new highest bidder.

You are to wait and watch until the auction is over – if someone outbids you, you will get a email from eBay with an opportunity to bid once again.

One of my recent customers bought an Xbox 360 wholesale list to begin selling on eBay. I looked through this list, all the suppliers were dropshippers or companies representing themselves as dropshipping companies and left no margin for the seller. I decided to write this article to gear people away from these lists as they are merely a waste of your time and hard earned money. Selling online does not just involve wholesale distributors but it also involves knowing how to sell and beat all your competitors online. As an eBay powerseller myself I know how many people fall for these lists and I can not but advise to stay clear.

Looking through the list of roughly 25 suppliers I figured out quickly that these are suppliers everyone and there grandmothers can access. The reason the powersellers can sell and dominate their niche is because they use true wholesale suppliers and proper dropshippers. Most of the websites on the list led to broken links I suppose for a few dollars what do you expect. These lists often have the headline, eBay wholesale list get 75% off Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and every other profitable niche.

I can tell you from selling in the most competitive niches that these suppliers would make you a loss on eBay. The wholesale lists on eBay are a scam and I can not stress that in order to sell in the marketplace you need wholesale distributing companies that are reliable and that are not contained within some eBay wholesale list.

Any of the wholesale distributors were more expensive than retail prices. Why would someone buy on eBay if they could get the item cheaper in their local video game suppliers store? The reason for this inflation in price is because you are dealing with a middle man who is merely reselling the items. Sometimes they even put their own store on these lists and if you are not careful you will get scammed.

Also research is paramount when you are selling on eBay and an eBay wholesale list will not give you a blueprint on what to sell, how to sell it and what is the best time to sell the item. Online dropshipping has become increasingly popular today and you can make good money as an online dropshipper but believe me, wholesale is the way to go. After some time looking I found an iPhone wholesaler and when you source these suppliers you realize that there is no way someone would give these suppliers out to you for $3.00. Selling iPhones is a very profitable business and many people are searching these nowadays but end up falling for scams.

So going back to the question at hand. Can an eBay wholesale list make you money? Well if you are looking to make a dollar here and there maybe you might have success with the wholesale lists on eBay. My experience has thought me that it is imperative to do your research and not too get drawn into taking out your credit card and buying the first list you see from some eBay seller with 50 feedback. Think about it these wholesale lists on eBay are being sold by people who do not even use the suppliers themselves. If they were, there feedback would be through the roof.

As the editor of the UK Auctionline Newsletter I receive a great number of e-mails from subscribers. Frequently the question they ask is, “Please tell me an easy way to make money on eBay.” I suppose the answer to this question really revolves around how you define the term easy.

It is my belief that there is no easier way to make money on the Internet than by selling items through eBay. What could be simpler, a straight forward 5 step process.

1. Get something to sell.

2. Photograph it, and write a description.

3. Upload your listing to eBay.

4. Collect your money.

5. Dispatch the item.

What could be simpler than that?

But I suspect what people are really asking is how can I easily get products to sell. From my experience this is what both newcomers and some experienced eBayers find difficult. So in this article I just want to highlight 5 very simple ways that you can get products to sell without even leaving your computer. This I hope that will be easy enough for everyone.

1. What, no photograph?

It is my belief that there is hardly an item listed on eBay or any of the other online auctions that does not benefit from having a photograph or image included in the listing. In fact most items that are listed without a photograph that actually sell tend to fetch 20% less than those with. In some categories the figures are even higher. For instance clothing items offered without a photograph average a 78% lower selling price than those with. So it would seem to be pretty easy to browse eBay looking for these “photo less” items, buying them and then relisting with a photograph. Money for old rope really.

2. Finding the poorly listed item.

There are many reasons why someone’s listing fails to attract any worthwhile bids. Bad title, short or poor description, wrong category, poor spelling and so on. You can find these by browsing around the auction site, but I would suggest an easier method.

Select the categories that you are interested in and look down the search feature for items finishing within the next hour. Here is where you will find the bargains that have failed to attract any bids for the reasons we have mentioned.

3. Unsocial hours

In any book about eBay you will find tips on when is the best time for auctions to finish. The most suggested times for most items are Sunday afternoon and evenings and Wednesday evenings. Some experts suggest that for business related items Monday or Tuesday during office hours are best. If you accept that there are times when you will get increased bids for your items there must also be times when if your auction ends you will not do so well. I would think if you have an auction that finishes between say 5 am and 8 am on a Monday morning you will not have too many people lurking to place last minute bids to push the price up. Again buy and relist with your auction set to finish at a more sociable time and you could easily make a 20% or more profit for very little effort.

4. Buy Collections

One of the easiest ways to make money on eBay is to cash in on other peoples laziness. If someone has say a collection of 10 china dogs, it is a fact that if they put all ten in one listing as a collection they will get less than if they had listed each item separately. But it is amazing how many sellers cannot be bothered to do this. I have in the past bought such a collection and actually made more from one of the items than I had paid for the whole collection.

5. Other online auctions.

Over 95% of all online auction sales are on eBay. They have the largest number of registered buyers and items listed for sale. For this reason items offered for sale on eBay get the best prices. So why not search around some of the smaller online auctions, because in many cases items listed with them will not attract such a good prices as could be achieved on eBay. Then all you have to do is buy from them and relist on eBay.

So there are 5 easy ideas for you to consider. Why not give some or all of them a try.
