How to Create Custom Permalink Structures [for Beginning Wordpress Bloggers]

If you're just setting up your Wordpress blog, one of the first changes you'll want to consider making is to adjust how Wordpress structures the permalinks of all of your posts. By default, Wordpress assigns each new post a code like this:

http://yourblog/?p=123

However, this code will not always be preferable to your blogging needs, especially when you're sharing post URLs with others or looking to maximize your site's visibility to search engines. It doesn't make sense for a blog that focuses on keywords to drop keywords from the URLs of its posts, so this is a change you should definitely consider.

If you feel as though you'd like to customize the structure of your posts, then take the following steps.

1. In the left sidebar of your Wordpress dashboard, click on Settings, and then Permalinks.

2. Select the Custom Structure from the list of Permalink structures and type the structure you would like to use in the field next to it. Most bloggers commonly use this structure:

/%category%/postname%/

Keep in mind that you shouldn't feel limited to this structure simply because others use it. I am comfortable with this structure because I strictly follow the categories that I've set up in my blog; however, if you're still trying to feel out the direction of your blog and the kinds of categories you'll be using, you should be aware that because this permalink structure uses categories, any changes to categories later on will result in some broken links.

An alternative to avoiding potential broken links from changes to your blog categories is a permalink structure that is based on dates. You can still have custom permalinks that make use of keywords and titles with this structure, as the date format won't take up too much room:

/%year%/%monthnum%/%postname%/

Depending on the format you're using for dates, this custom structure can be just as short as the category-based custom structure, which means you'll be fine when you set up your blog posts, as long as the titles are within reason.

And that's it really! Once you make the change in the settings of your Wordpress blog, you're all set to blog with customized URLs for your posts.

Hi guys, this is my first post in the series of posts on how to arrange and manage your music library. And believe me this one is really awesome. I always wanted to have a addon program for my media player, that automatically fetches the lyrics of the song I am playing right now. For a long time I was unable to find any. But a few days back I accidently stumbled upon this new software and it was exactly the thing I was looking for. So I thought I would share it with you. The program is called Minilyrics, its free to use but for the free version at startup it will show a popup which you can close. But if wanna pay for it, its $14.95 if you wanna get rid of popup, its not a bigdeal though.

Minilyrics works with almost all the media players that I am aware of. Guys my firefox has been giving me notifications to update my browser to Firefox 4. I thought that might be a good change, but it has a great problem atleast for me. Which actually comes out to be Google code as it is still open to let you upload your files each of maximum 100mb including javascript, xml, rar, zip, icon files and many more. They are providing 2gb of total space for uploading your files. So you can definitely make some good use of space on google servers. Here is how to do it...

How to upload javascript (.js) files on Google server via Google Code: Full Tutorial

Step 1. Just go to code.google.com, and login using your gmail account id.

Step 2. Now go to the Project Hosting section on Google Code website and click Create a new project link, a page as shown below will open up.

Step 3. Just write the name of the project without space in small case letters, and the rest as shown in the screenshot above. Write anything in the project summary and description section, provide any labels to it and click Create Project button .

Step 4. Now once the project page is created, it will automatically open up. Now click the Downloads tab and then click the New Download link, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 5. Now a page will open for your file to get uploaded, as shown in the screenshot below.

Just write any summary about the file you are uploading, then browse the file you want to upload(max. size 100mb), apply some label and click submit file. Almost everyone of us has a google account & for those who don't have its free to sign up, so it will universally easy for everyone to upload their files on google servers. Google at present provides around 2gb space for your files to get uploaded. So you can upload your javascripts, xml and other such files to google servers. Earlier google pages were an option for the bloggers to upload their javascript files and then use them on their blogs using a reference to the file URL. But since google pages is no longer allowing any new sign ups the options are limited. The new substitute for google page is google sites which doesnot allow any file upload.

When there is a will, there is a way. Now I just came across a new way to upload your javascript(.js) files along with some other formats like icon files (.ico), xml, zip, rar and a lot more. The website is called Google Code, where you can upload above mentioned files along with many not mentioned here according to your need. The maximum upload file size is 100mb, and the total upload space is 2gb. Google Buzz !!! Wow what a way to express views, share ideas u find interesting and lots more .Surely google one after the another continuously implementing new ways for social networking like google wave and now google buzz.
But i came to encounter many people who are unware of the features of Buzz.So i am writing this to guide them so that they could buzz properly. As the computational power and the number of cores of the processors is increasing, so is the ability to do multiple tasks at the same time listening music, browsing the web, editing an image and preparing a presentation at the same time. So with one desktop as in the case of windows, it all becomes messy. Linux based Ubuntu provides a multiple desktop option where you can have 2 desktops and you can switch between them very easily. But now you can do the same with windows. Here is how to convert your window's single desktop into linux like multiple desktop.

How to share your youtube activity with facebook and twitter friends ?

Step 1. Just go to youtube.com and login using your Gmail account.

Step 2. Once you have logged in, go to the account tab as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 3. Under the accounts tab, now go to the Activity Sharing option. The layout will look more or less like the screenshot below:

Step 4. Now just click on the Connect Accounts link in front of the account you want to connect. Presently Youtube provide sharing on facebook, twitter and Google Reader. You can also select which youtube activity of your's you want to share: when you Like a video, Comment on a video, Subscribe to a channel, Favorite a video, Upload a video.Now just save the setings.

Remember these activities will only be shared when you are logged into youtube.

Under this category most of us generally use Microsoft Office for which one has to pay hundreds of dollars. But now I have a free alternative to microsoft office which can do almost anything that Microsoft Office can do but this one is free. It is called Open Office and you can download Open Office for free.

5. Entertainment:

For entertainment I would suggest VLC media player, it can play almost any multimedia file format available on the face of this earth and ofcourse it is free. Download VLC media player.

6. Graphics Editor:

How you are going to edit your pictures? Well I would suggest you to try Paint.net. It provide advanced features like layers, magic wand, filters and much more editing tools in a set up of just a few Mbs. It is quite powerful and can do almost anything you want to do with your pictures. Get Paint.NET for free.

7. Anti Spyware Tool:

Now finally we need a program to scan your computer to find settings changed by spyware, malware or other unwanted programs. For all of these problems one tool is just enough. You should try trend micro hijackthis for all of the malware and spyware removal.
