A great book for beginning programmers who want to learn Perl. Filled with concrete examples and, yes, by using this book you will be able to write good Perl code on your own in 21 days. But no person is an island, and there is no single book that covers Perl completely, so we recommend that you also get Programming Perl, which is better at providing the language specifications, and, in fact, was written by the author of Perl.
Best practices and growing your career!

I think everyone should be required to take & pass the RHCE 'if' you would in a
Enterprise environment or in a smaller company. Understanding the fundamentals of
an Operating System to the complexity of services that can survive the public
Internet or Internal network is key to success.

I learned a lot from digging in and I know when I set up servers for work they
are correct and done by the book, not by some search off the Internet or by some
forum where people do things by the seat of the pants,,.

This to me was an awesome achievement and milestone, I knew after going through
all of the self-sacrifice it allowed me to except new challenges.
RHCE book
Book was delivered on time and in new condition. Excellent deal. Could not get this book in person at the local bookstores in my town.
User review
for the novice or the seasoned,,.
I recently purchased the RHCE Exam Guide by Michael Jang, and I give the book all five stars because it is exactly what I expected it to be: an excellent, thorough, and practical approach to Linux administration. I was first introduced to Michael through his Fedora Core 5 book, which was also an excellent reference. Indeed, I often refer to the Fedora 5 book for straight answers for many questions that I have about later releases of the Linux OS.

I bought the book because I intend to take and pass the RHCE exam. The book was recommended by others who used it as their sole reference and preparation source for the exam. The book is well outlined and incremental in its approach to the entire operating system, and gives step-by-step configurations for all the necessary elements of exam preparation.

Two personal notes: first, I do not think the book will be my only reference during exam preparation. While the book gives excellent outlines of configurations and settings, it does not explain the low-level & to many of the services and utilities of Linux. If this were so, the book would easily be twice its size. The reader is left to fill in his/her own knowledge gaps in order to become intimate with the deeper workings of The Greatest OS on Earth. Second, I sensed from Michael's writing style early in the Fedora 5 book that he was sitting next to me, mentoring me through the learning process. It could well be his teaching style, or my learning style, or simple personal resonation alone that drives me to carry the book with me everywhere: from night stand to office and back.

All in all, the book is a no-nonsense, direct, pragmatic approach to a very, very complex subject. Caveat Emptor: the introduction states clearly that the RHCE exam has a 50% pass rate for first time test takers. Then again, the RHCE IS the most sought-after certification in the industry. All the more reason to focus on success with this book. I'm glad to own the Third & Fifth editions.

This is a book for those of us who believed that we didn?t need to learn Perl, and now we know it is more ubiquitous than ever. Perl is extremely flexible and powerful, and it isn?t afraid of Web 2.0 or the cloud. Originally touted as the duct tape of the Internet, Perl has since evolved into a multipurpose, multiplatform language present absolutely everywhere: heavy-duty web applications, the cloud, systems administration, natural language processing, and financial engineering. Beginning Perl, Third Edition provides valuable insight into Perl?s role regarding all of these tasks and more.

Commencing with a comprehensive overview of language basics, you?ll learn all about important concepts such as Perl?s data types and control flow constructs. This material sets the stage for a discussion of more complex topics, such as writing custom functions, using regular expressions, and file input and output. Next, the book moves on to the advanced topics of object-oriented programming, modules, web programming, and database administration with Perl?s powerful database interface module, DBI. The examples and code provided offer you all of the information you need to start writing your own powerful scripts to solve the problems listed above, and many more.

Some child psychologists will tell you that you should never talk down to your children. Rather than spoonfeeding 'em baby talk, you should speak to your kids using big words and long complex sentences--which is tougher on the kid at first, but ultimately makes them a lot smarter than they'd ever be from just hearing `goo goo ga ga`.

In much the same way, Sybex's CCNA Study Guide is a book that uncompromisingly presents complex material and expects you to live up to it. While the explanations are dense and often intimidating, once you get through this book, you'll be ready to face--and pass!--the treacherous CCNA exam.

Todd Lammle assumes that the reader has a passing familiarity with basic networking concepts, and he launches straight into an in-depth review of the OSI networking model without even mentioning what hubs, routers, and switches are. He then works his way into explaining TCP/IP and TCP/IP subnetting, a notoriously confusing concept for beginners, and in truth, mid-level techies may be temporarily confused here as well.

Unlike many other CCNA study guides, which touch briefly on subnetting and then provide a list of common subnet masks for rote memorization, Lammle really wants you to understand why certain masks and address ranges work. His objective is for his readers to be able to compute subnets on the fly--a task which many network professionals fake to this day--and as such, he takes you deep into the binary mysteries of TCP/IP. The explanations here are real migraine-inducers, but that's more the fault of TCP/IP's innate complexity than Lammle's explanations. Lammle himself admits that he expects his audience to have to reread the TCP/IP chapter at least once--but if you take the time to bear down, do the math, and really study, you'll never need to read another chapter on TCP/IP subnetting again.

The next sections of the book deal with Cisco routing commands, and it is here that the CCNA Study Guide truly shines. Cisco router commands are infamous for providing the user with floods of information, and the incoming tide of network statistics often sends fledgling CCNA trainees into info-shock. When you have three pages worth of data zipping by on your screen, how do you decide what the important bits are?

Lammle does an extremely good job of walking his students through the various Cisco commands. He explains what each command is meant to do, shows how it's done, and then shows you what you should be looking for after it's done. The chapters here are methodical, thorough, and dense, but they hang together excellently. The only problem is that Lammle assumes you'll be practicing these commands on an actual router--and many CCNA students don't have a practice lab to work with. However, if you purchase the CCNA Virtual Lab, a highly recommended piece of software that simulates Cisco routers in an connected environment, you'll have the next best thing to hands-on router experience. A preview edition of the Virtual Lab is included with the book.

The last section of the book is devoted to WAN protocols, and this part of the book is slightly disappointing. While the details presented in the WAN chapters are solid, they seem slightly out of proportion: while Wide Area Networks, and in particular, ISDN, are a reasonably large part of the CCNA exam, the ISDN section here is all of 20 pages. It's not that there's not enough to pass, but Lammle doesn't provide his usual wealth of details in the final chapter.

Like every good certification book, there are quizzes to test your skill, and you won't be lacking for choices here--seven `open answer` questions, 20 multiple-choice questions, and hands-on workshops grace the end of each chapter. The book ends with a 60-question final exam. The questions are moderately hard, and are a good test of your overall comprehension, but you can probably expect to find harder questions on the actual exam.

Rounding out this book is a voluminous hands-on walk-through of Catalyst 1900 Switch configuration, a comprehensive list of CCNA router commands, and a 70-page glossary. In short, this guide is like a stern teacher: it's not always easy to follow, and it's sometimes frustrating. But by the time you're finished, you'll understand the material better than you could have ever dreamed. --William Steinmetz
Chapter 1 terrible
I haven't gotten past chapter one yet, but I hope the rest of the book is better than this. A lot better. The book seems to contradict itself regularly, and uses terms that it hasn't previously defined, so I have to keep a bookmark in the glossary section and flip back to it frequently
(and I'm not a novice either). The questions at the end of the chapter are completely worthless. Many of them are so vague as to be unanswerable, and for many of the rest I can find quotes in the chapter that contradict the answers given. I like review questions, so I've bought another book that has better ones. But if the quality of the text doesn't improve in the coming chapters, I'll have to give up on this book.
Cisco ccna Review
I will be sending this book back because it is from 2002 and does not contain updates to ccna content and the readable CD that came with the book can only be opened in adobe V5, I cannot downgrade to V5.
Thank you
Not a bad primer, but,,,,
Lammle does an excellent job of explaining complex networking concepts (particularly subnetting) in terms simple enough for someone with no previous exposure to networking to understand.

Unfortunately, some subjects were oversimplified, to the point that I felt underprepared for the CCNA test. If you are an excellent student, or you retain 100% of what you read, this book will get you a passing score on the exam. For the rest of us, I recommend Wendell Odom's CCNA Self Study Certification Library (Cisco Press - ISBN 1-58720-095-3). There's more to read, but you'll enter the exam more confident and better prepared.
Lamle does it right
The most challenging thing a certification test-prep book faces is the way it invariably will be misused. There is an old saw about using the right tool for the job, which in essence tells us to use the correct planning, strategy, and action to get the result we want. The majority of people purchasing a book like this are planning to take the CCNA exam and want some help preparing. This makes sense, and this is why I myself purchased Lamle's book. While it worked, and I passed with a 901, I couldn't help but wonder how much more difficult it would have been without hands-on experience with the devices, protocols and processes themselves at work. I have not yet met anyone who studied for, and passed, the CCNA test without any prior hands-on network experience.

It makes me very nervous to read someone's review suggesting, `This is the only preparation you need`. To pass the test, you will likely need some experience as well, and to avoid the Catch-22 of requiring experience to get the job, yet also the job to gain the experience, I would recommend seeking first a junior position in the field, where you can not only get the experience, but also the mentoring of senior networking staff.

However, once you pass the test and have the cert, we face another challenge: `Does the cert verify your ability to apply what you know?` Not really, but that's why you cannot stop learning and developing your skills set there. You will likely need the CCNA to get the interview for the Networking job you seek, but you will need interview skills to get the job, and you will need to be able to APPLY your technical knowledge to keep it. Lamle's book is one of the best prep books out there for the CCNA. But if you plan to have a long-term career in Networking, do not think for a moment that you can stop there. And I'm not just talking about the next level of Cisco Certification.

Buy this book and study it, but make sure you maintain a long-term professional skills development plan, and if you don't already have it, start building your experience in the field. You'll need it.

Good luck!
A Must Buy!
This book definitely helped me pass my CCNA. The material in this book will definitely provide you with the tools you need in order to configure Cisco equipment and pass the CCNA the first time.

I passed the exam with a 901 the first try.
I downloaded this book out of boredom at work today and read it this same day. It was fantastic. I enjoyed the style of writing, the story was held together very well, and it came to life before my eyes. I enjoyed myself today because of this book. With full coverage of the three latest Sun Java certification exams, Java 2 Certification Training Guide provides an excellent resource for any Java programmer prepping for these tests.

The best thing about this book is its insider-track perspective on three Sun exams. This book concentrates on the Programmer exam (which comprises well over half the book) but also addresses the Architect and Developer tests. Since the author has worked with Sun to help develop the actual exams, he is a worthy guide to the material here. And as the author himself points out, even if you are a great Java programmer, passing these exams isn't easy because they include details--and sometime obscure features--that you don't use every day.

Even if you are an experienced Java developer, you will appreciate the author's thorough tour of Java language fundamentals, core classes, and packages. Even the book's numerous tables present Java information efficiently.

Rather than a general guide to Java programming, the presentation is geared closely to what you'll need for these certification tests. Another standout feature here are the review questions, which follow Sun's format and style as well as the inclusion of a sample computer-based exam on CD-ROM.

For readers seeking a higher level of Java certification, the book provides everything you will need for the Architect and Developer exams too. Besides a review of Java APIs like JDBC and Remote Method Invocation (RMI), you will find material on the basics of distributed systems, including short sections on CORBA and DCOM. For Developer certification, the book lists dos and don'ts for writing successful code on the exam.

With its mix of expert guidance and challenging sample test questions, Java 2 Certification Training Guide makes for an effective guide to getting certified on today's Java 2 platform. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: test preparation for the Sun Certified Programmer, Architect, and Developer Exams; Java language fundamentals; core packages; threads; AWT; event handling; graphics; I/O; Java object-oriented and distributed architectures; security; JDBC; and RMI.
User review
This books is very bad, do not buy it.
This book is atrocious. It is very expensive and is completely valueless for passing the exam. It provides no real information, rather it is an endless checklist of things that you need to know to pass the exam. Sun provides this for free in their test objectives list. The mock exam is exactly that, a mockery of an exam. The test engine barely works (I had to modify several files to get it to work) and the questions are poorly phrased and confusing. I would strongly advice anyone who wants to pass the test to save their money and purchase another book instead,,,,

User review
Riddled with errors, typos, and omissions
So far I have read 6 chapters of Part I. There is a typo or an outright mistake on nearly every page. Semantics of the language are described either incorrectly or in terms too vague to even be wrong. Whoever typeset the thing put `fi` and `fl` ligatures in the monospaced code typeface, and after about 100 pages forgot to indicate syntactic metavariables with italics. When I read others' reviews saying that the real exam questions are much harder than those in this book, and then I find that the ones in the book actually have incorrect answers given in some cases, I lose all faith in the rest. I guess you get what you pay for.

User review
Outdated Programmer Cert Section
Used this book exclusively to study for the J2CP test. The example questions were outdated and nowhere near the level of complexity found on the actual test. I passed, but not because of this book (5+ yrs experience w/ Java).

The developer certification section was short on content. Now that Sun has beefed up the Architect exam, I wouldn't trust the Architect section in this book.

The book is good at giving you a solid understanding of the Java language basics. However, the purpose of buying a book like this is to prepare for and pass the certification tests, and there is no hope for someone with little experience to pass any of the exams using this book.

User review
Okay but not great
This book is adequate as a supplement as you prepare for the exam , but it is not exceptional. There were a couple questionable topics, in particular, be cautious of the explanation it gives of polymorphism. The coverage of the Developer exam is very brief, but if you are buying the book only to pass the programmer exam, you should probably do fine. Personally, I found The Complete Java 2 Certificaion Study Guide to be clearer and more effective.

User review
Not the first book I would purchase to prepare for the exam
In preparation for the Java 2 Programmer exam, I worked through this, and two other texts; `A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification` by Mughal and Rasmussen, and `Java 2 Exam Prep` by Bill Brogen. This book, in my opinion, was the weakest of the three. I would only recommend it as a supplemental source of practice questions once you have worked through another certification guide (or two).

Although this book does cover all of the major areas of the exam (test# 310-025), it is missing quite a bit of the syntactical minutia that the exam is so notorious for containing. It is also my opinion that this book does not contain enough `debugging` type review questions - where you a presented with a block of code and asked what (if anything) is syntactically incorrect. This type of question wass very common on the version of the exam that I recently took.

If you are preparing for the exam, I think your best bet is `A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification` by Mughal and Rasmussen. If you reach a point at which you can answer all of the review and practice questions in this book, you are probably more than prepared to take a shot at certification.

I'd also like to recommend the three Marcus Green practice tests (available from javaranch.com). They are an excellent last-minute study tool and an accurate indicator of how well you will do on the actual exam. My actual score turned out to be a few points higher than my average score on these practice tests.
If you'd like to learn the new features in Java SE 5.0 and pass the Sun Certified Java Programmer Upgrade Exam (CX-310-056), then this book is for you. It covers all the Java SE 5.0 new features required in the exam. You don't need to read about the existing features that you already know. 117 review questions and mock exam questions are included.

It includes the following chapters: Autoboxing, Generics, For-each loop, Manipulating Collections, Variable Arity Parameters, Enum, Static Imports, Covariant Return Types, Java I/O, Formatting and Parsing, Preparing for the Exam.
User review
Insufficient
I was very displeased with this book. It is filled with grammatical errors, and it lacks fluidity and proper writing. Perhaps the writer should read other exam review books first.

User review
0.4 inches thick
The first thing that struck me when I received this book was how thin it is, second by it's large fonts and generous amounts of white space.

I was expecting the book to come with several practice exams, and maybe even a CD-ROM. Neither was the case. At the end of each chapter the book has several review questions, and one or two 'mock exam' questions.

The really irritating thing was the number for the questions and answers never match. I can't believe the author and publisher could be so careless to not even notice the numbers don't match the questions. Did they not have one person proof read the book?
User review
An OK book, but certainly not the best
This is my second review, and again, it's a java certification book. This was the book I studied from for my certification exam, and thanks to God, I did pretty well.

The book is well constructed, with a lot of info, and a lot of great exercises at the end of each chapter, plus a mock exam, and four sample exams on the accompanying CD. Unfortunately, the book is full of typos, and there are several mistakes with the exam and the review questions, which is quiet a shame. Those mistakes turn this book from a great book, to a `just quiet satisfactory` book. Some of the mistakes are clearly due to lack of revision of the changes done to this edition, so conflicts show up in a couple of places.

An example to what I mean is that starting from Java 5.0, the return type of the overriding method could be a child of the return type of the overridden method, and it's stated clearly in the middle of the chapter, but in the summary at the of the chapter, it's mentioned that the return type of the overriding method must be exactly the same as the overridden method, and can't even be a subclass of it (which is true for pre-5.0). This is clearly something that was in previous editions of the book, and wasn't changed where it was supposed to be. Several mistakes like this occur in the book.

The book is worth it's price, but only if you are going to be careful while studying from it, and check other sources, whether they are other books, or freely available resources on the internet. If you are going to study from one book, and one book only, and will not rely on any other resources, then this is not the book for you. The book is not a bad choice, but there are several other better study guides in the market, like Katherine's Sierra's and Bert Bate's SCJP SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide (Exam 310-055) (Certification Press Study Guides) from Osbourne. I checked it out, and it looks great.

User review
I Passed the SCJP Exam Using this Book
This is a good book if you want to review and brush up on your knowledge for the SCJP 5.0 exam. With that being said, this is not the only material that you should use for the exam. The included CD has practice tests, but they are pretty weak. Many of the answers are incorrect and they are not even close to the difficulty of the actual exam. Do yourself a favor and buy the practice tests from Sun. Read the book, understand the topics, take the chapter tests on the CD and practice using Sun's practice tests. This is a painful exam and should not be taken lightly.

User review
Dont Depend completely on this book for SCJP exam
This book gives some basic idea to prepare for exam . Do your own research on topics like Generics , Threads , Collections etc and do some sample questions from Sun site.
This book gave me 75% material for exam , but dont rely completly on this book to pass the exam.

User review
Great Book
I highly recommend this book whether you're going for the certification or not. It's well laid out, and well written. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting general knowledge of all the Java concepts. Only complaint is that the directions for the password to access the PDF version of the manual was wrong.

User review
I do not recommend this book at all.
The book does provide some high-level overview of Java 1.5 features, and that's where it stops. It doesn't provide anywhere near enough detail and application to be used as either a test preparation tool or as a language reference.
Excellent for SCJP Exam (even SCJP 5)
This is a great book to prepare for the SCJP exams. The pity is that it was designed for SCJP 1.4. But where the subject matter for SCJP 5 is the same as for SCJP 1.4 I find this book better than the Sierra/Bates book. The discussion is very complete and thorough. Very good discussion of nested classes, threads, etc. But you need the S/B book for generics and the newer stuff.
A good book to pass SCJA 4.0 -- but it takes time to teach me things not required by the SCJA 4 exam
This is a quality book, the only thing that I've found wrong with it is that it teaches Java 4.0 and I want to learn Java 5.0 now. Also, at the beginning of each chapter the book identifies what is required by the Exam and what the authors have added to the book. In the `heat-of-the-battle`, as you're studying the book, the exam objectives and the extraneous material are mixed together. I have enough to do to certify in SCJA, SCJP, SCJD, and SCBCD without learning any extras. If the authors think that they know better than Sun as to what I should learn, they should clearly mark it, or have a part I that is essential to pass the exam and a part II that is additional learning that the authors want me to learn.
But it is not good for explain themes(eg. reference types o arrays). You must to consult other books for more complete explanations. But this book is very necesary like guide to you must to known. It is essential.
very deep,,. great for hardcore java programmer
i buy this book together with kathy's book and have passed the exam with 95% score. i found the exam very easy (although i still missed 3 of the 61 questions), i guess it's because i have read this whole book thoroughly. kathy's book is very good too but just covers what you really need to pass the exam. this book goes a step further by explaining each concept thoroughly, more than you need to pass the exam. if you want to have deep knowledge of how java works, and not just merely to pass the exam, then this is the best book for you.

Programming Wireless Devices with the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition, Second Edition Ebook

This book presents the Java A 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) standards that support the development of applications for consumer devices such as mobile phones, two-way pagers, and wireless personal organizers. To create these standards, Sun collaborated with such consumer device companies as Motorola, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Research In Motion, Samsung, Siemens, Sony Ericsson, and many others. The result is a highly portable, small-footprint application development environment that brings the unique capabilities of Java technology, including platform independence and enhanced security, to the rapidly growing wireless market. This definitive Java Series guide provides a programmer's introduction to the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition. It presents a general description of wireless technology and an overview of the J2ME platform. In addition, the book details the Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) version 1.1 and the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) version 2.0, the standards that define the Java platform features and libraries for wireless, resource-constrained devices.Written by a team of authors that includes the original J2ME technology experts from Sun, Motorola, and Nokia, this book provides a description of the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition, as well as practical implementation advice.
The Java A Series is supported, endorsed, and authored by the creators of the Java technology at Sun Microsystems, Inc. It is the official place to go for complete, expert, and definitive information on Java technology. The books in this Series provide the inside information you need to build effective, robust, and portable applications and applets. The Series is an indispensable resource for anyone targeting the Java 2 platform.
User review
Excellent but not a programming HOW TO exactly
In short, this an excellent J2ME reference book, but not very good for average programmers. You will be disappointed if you are looking for a run-of-the-mill programmer's recipe book. This is not a software development oriented book.

Look for it only if you need accurate J2ME reference or if you are intested in an overview which goes into detail for implementation aspects, that is, if you need to understand the
underlying support of CLDC/MIDP by a device. This means the average programmer will be disappointed but a software architect will find it quite useful. Make sure you buy the 2nd edition.

The book is written by people who are actually involved in drafting the J2ME specifications.
The text closely follows the CLDC and MIDP 2.0 specifications in every aspect. It can be defined as a summary of the MIDP and CLDC specifications.

By the way other APIs such as CDC, WMA, File API, etc, are not covered by the book.

User review
I want to learn coding not reading,,.
This is NOT the book to learn how to programming in J2ME! You need a great imagination to learn the content of this book, if you have never experienced J2ME before, because it contains little code example. In spite of this, the book contains only 7 compilable code example, all others are code segments -- that is you need to do a lot of tedious coding your self to get it running.

This book should more likely be used as a reference manual by experienced J2ME programmer. The structure of this book is clear, so it is easy to retrieve information. But the authors of this book seems have a tendency to fill pages, as they use `Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition` and `Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition` (and other similar) instead of `J2SE` and `J2ME` through out the book, as if readers can't remember an acronym!

If you are looking for a book for learning `how to program with J2ME` you should not choose this one.
Review of `Programming Wireless Devices with the J2ME`
So I have been programming with J2ME and DOJA for a while on various Japanese Cellphones. The Japanese cellphones that do support the full MIDP/CLDC combination do not yet support the MIDP 2.0 that this book is covering, but I thought it would be a good idea to check out what I might be able to use when they do, and also try and clear up my own confusion about what precisely the CLDC and MIDP actually are.

Having read the book I think I have a better idea of the distinction between CLDC and MIDP, but still don't feel wonderfully sure. The impression I come away with is that the CLDC is about ensuring a basic level of functionality and the MIDP describes a wider range of functionality such as GUIs and Advanced communications features. This would make sense then if the Japanese Docomo Java framework was CLDC and AU/Vodaphone framework was both CLDC and MIDP.

The book itself was reasonably informative as to the new MIDP 2.0 features, and I was interested to see some good code samples for things like the MIDP Game and Multimedia API - however the code samples don't yet appear available for download. I hope they'll be up soon so I can check them out.

Overall I found the book a little difficult to read - it is kind of more of a reference book - I would imagine myself dipping into it to get things I need, rather than reading through it to get an understanding of J2ME. In some ways the book would almost be better as a more condensed reference work. There are a number of good wireless programming tips such as making all communications run in a separate thread to improve user experience, but these are a little thin on the ground and the book is dominated by working through each detail of each of the APIs. I think is an important book to have if you are working against the MIDP2.0 specification, but I don't think I 'd recommend it to a beginner trying to learn J2ME.

I would imagine that successive iterations of this book will lead to major improvements, such as breaking the book into a Reference work, and a J2ME programming tips guide. I think another couple of years of explosive growth in J2ME wireless devices and programmers will make the latter work possible.
Upgrade to MIDP 2 and CLDC 1.1
The market for small devices (cellphones, PDAs, watches,,,.) with computational ability, but much less so than a standard PC or laptop is potentially vast. No one disputes this. Its allure is enhanced by there being no overly dominant player hoovering up over 50% of the profits, like Microsoft and Intel collectively in PCs.

Logically, Sun sees growth here and this book is part of its frenetic rollout. It differs from the first edition because of significant upgrades to the 2 standards its describes. The Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) went from version 1 in 1999 to 1.1 in 2002. It added more features that the book describes in detail. Basically, they give a richer compatibility with standard java (J2SE). The other standard, Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) went from version 1 to 2 in 2002. To developers the key additions were APIs for sound and games. In retrospect, MIDP 1 was indeed primitive, to lack these.

Commercially, the MIDP 2 changes in the book may be more important than the CLDC changes. It means that you can now develop games and other applications using sound, at a high enough level of abstraction that they can be run on a broader range of hardware. Well at least that is the idea. I have not done so. But the book's explanation seems logical and thorough enough to make this plausible. Undoubtedly, if you and others follow this path, gaps or insufficiency will be found, leading to the next increments of the standards.

If you are still clutching the first edition of this book, or any other book that only covers CLDC 1 or MIDP 1, then drop it. Obsolete. Upgrade here.
With Teach Yourself C++ in 21 Days, author Jesse Liberty presents a rapid and well-organized program for getting up to speed in C++ programming. By making the seemingly complex world of C++ digestible in daily doses, Liberty delivers a tutorial that keeps you motivated and yields serious results.
This book uses a chapter-a-day approach, with the course outline clearly presented inside the front cover so you'll know exactly where you're headed. Unlike many C++ tutorials, this book doesn't put you to sleep early on with object-oriented programming (OOP) theory. Instead, it quickly makes you productive with the basics of the C++ language and then reinforces your new knowledge with OOP as you move through the teaching program.

The first week introduces you to the fundamentals: the anatomy of a C++ program, variables, expressions, functions, program flow, and the basics of classes. Week two introduces some of the more sophisticated elements of the language such as pointers, arrays, and function overloading in a clear and effective manner. The final week concludes your crash course with advanced topics: streams, advanced inheritance, the C++ pre-processor, templates, and error handling. One day is also devoted strictly to object-oriented analysis and design. Each chapter finishes with a daily summary, a Q&A section, a quiz, and a series of excellent coding exercises.
This tutorial, which is designed to teach you to write industry standard ANSI C++ code, requires no previous programming expertise. If you want to get serious with C++ in a hurry, this book is an excellent way to go.
not good for me
I am a beginner,I want to learn java quickly.but this book cann't
help me to do this.
Good Beginner's Reference
I have two beginning Java books, Joyce Farrel's `Java Programming: 2nd Edition` and `Teach Yourself Java in 21 Days` of the two, this book is the easier to understand. However, it doesn't push the reader to experiment with code and push themselves like the first title I mentioned does.

I have experience in other OOP languages and that may be what made this book easy for me to understand. If I try to look at this book as a beginner that has never had any programming experience I think this book would be tricky to understand. I would suggest that anybody that wants to learn any kind of programming get a good book on programming logic and learn how to write pseudo-code and flowchart before they totally imerse themselves in OOP (or procedural programming).

This book does cover almost every aspect of Java. The one that I found it lacking in, and the one I need for work, are JDBC basics. Still, I think that before tackling JDBC a person should understand the basics and this book would do a good job of that.

I have had two people recommend `Thinking in Java` by Bruce Eckel as the best book for learning Java. I have not read it but it is free for download in PDF format. I think a book like that combined with this one would be the best for anyone that wants to be a Java programmer.

Teach yourself java in 21 YEARS
This book never comes close to presenting istself as a stand alone subject for learning java. Especially not in 21 days or 100 days, I would challange if it could be done in a year. This book is poorly written with enormous amount of errors , not just in the text but in the program listing themselves. I doubt if this book was proof read or even if any of the programs where written and carried out to the extreme to see if they really worked. While this book covers a lot of topics there are poor to no examples on any of the material that is covered.

This book alone with the second edition is being used for a subject class for a college level course. The second edition is not as bad as the first , tho , what are the odds of the same program appearing in both books and in different formats and yet neither one will run when you get done. Well you just have to present them to the instructor and ask him to give it a go . oh! it wont run . maybe we ought to throw out the books. Heres an idea lets get hold of the auther , you mean they wont answer there email. WOW , and to think we buy this junk and nobody ever sits down and looks it over. Simply amazing. so if you are interested in java , i know two books at least to stay away from.

i have a library of several books that i use for reference, and i could not at this time recommend one. If there is someone out there who has some great degree of results let me know . It could also help others.

If i had to choose one it would be the ` complete reference of java by Naughton / Schildt `. while not the best it does answer a lot of questions.

learing java you need to really be exposed to layouts ,events networking and windows. this book falls short on all accounts.

yes i am still working on java , i like the langauge and will learn it one way or another .

so happy programming to one and all.

do drop me a line
DON`T BUY THIS BOOK
Wow this book sucks,,. unorganized and incomplete. The most common line was `you will learn more about that later on day xxxx`

STAY AWAY FROM THIS BOOK

This book is not bad if you know object-oriented programming
This book is a fairly good book if you have experience in C++. If you don't know object-oriented programming, my advice is to start from the beginning. Learn C/C++ first!!!!!
