I love many, many things about Northern Michigan, but one place in particular that steals my heart year after year is the city of Leland. It was just one of the many places we visited on our vacation this past week. Next time you head north, I highly recommend stopping at this fabulous little fishtown. In particular, there is an amazing sandwich shop there called The Village Cheese Shanty. They make sandwiches on this homemade pretzel bread that is to die for. I crave these sandwiches....they are more delicious then words can describe. If you have a chance......visit Leland and get one!! But get there early....they sell out everyday. ;)

Alyssa turns one

Alyssa is now one!! Such an awesome milestone to hit. It seemed like yesterday I was photographing her 6 month portraits. Alyssa is just the sweeeeetest little girl. She really loves to snuggle with her mom and dad. She really is one big ball of sunshine!! I met them at the park in downtown Rochester on what was seriously one of the nicest days we've had yet. Liz and Noah.....thank you for being so awesome!! I had a blast!! :) :)

Adeline Cecilia {newborn}

Adeline Cecilia was born into this world on May 30, 2011 to her proud parents Jessy and Rob. Adeline graced us with her presence a few weeks early.....but she was born healthy, happy and showered with love from family and friends. Her expressions are already the cuuuuuutest, and she even stayed awake for most of the session. Adeline already loves her "sister" Smokey......and Smokey has been making the adjustment extremely well. :) I am so honored to have documented her only a few short days after her birth. The world welcomes this beautiful girl with open arms.

Janelle and Ryan {engagement}

I am so honored to share this next engagement session with you. Janelle is one of the fabulous wedding coordinators at Castle Farms, and is getting married herself next June to her amazing man Ryan. This was the first day I met Ryan, and I don't think I stopped smiling the whole time at the both of them. Chris and I met them at Pond Hill Farm in Harbor Sprints, MI. I am so thankful to the owners for letting us take pictures around their gorgeous farm after hours. One of my favorite parts was the farm dog "Hoagie" who followed us around the entire time. He was sweet and kept Janelle and Ryan's dog Decker company the whole time. Janelle is one of the sweetest people I have ever met...and I am so excited to share her engagement pictures....

I can't rave enough about Erin, Pete and Hailey. Erin is not only a knockout, but she has the kindest soul. Her words are always gracious and kind, and everything she does comes from the heart. Pete is definitely her soul mate. They balance each other out so well with his kind demeanor and generous spirit. Erin's daughter Hailey is loving, spunky and a whole lotta fun!! We had a great day exploring Detroit. Lots of music everywhere, lots of people, and a ton of energy. Erin....can we do it again? Can we? LOL.....enjoy!!!

I had the utmost pleasure of meeting Shilo and her beautifulawesome family!! We met at the Mill Pond in Fenton....which was perfect. The weather was great and it wasn't too crowded. Shilo and Mike have two adorable sons...Connor and Cash. These kids rock by the way. You can totally tell from the images that they are just bursting with personality. And we can't forget Mimi......the family's Boston Terrier puppy. I don't know what it is about Bostons......but they make the BEST expressions!!! Enjoy!!

I remember at their engagement session how Lisa said Brandon was the nicest person she has ever met. I think these two were absolutely made for each other!! I absolutely LOVE my time spent with them, and I have to agree with Lisa.....but I, too think she is an absolute doll. :) If ever two people had such a great balance to them....it would be L+B. I loved how Lisa always kept me updated...and sent me little notes here and there. She is so extremely thoughtful and kind....and they are both so lucky to have each other!!

10 things that inspire me

I wanted to write a little post on the top ten things that inspire me in my work. We all draw inspiration from different places, but the following list has been a consistent source of inspiration for me over the years. In no particular order...

1. Poetry
For some reason, this has always been one of my biggest sources of inspiration. I could get lost in poetry books. I thrive on the random and eclectic thoughts of others, and to see how they organize them fascinates me beyond words. Some of my favorites have always been Sabrina Ward Harrison and Kristen Jongen from Soul Soup.

2. The Seasons

It's no surprise that I lurrrrrve the state of Michigan. Yes....even through the ferocious winters. I find comfort in the seasons. Recognizing what makes each month sweet and delicious. Nature is such a big inspiration in my work. From the amazing color palettes to the way the air smells....yes....Michigan has treated me well over the years.

3. Resting
This is probably my hardest lesson I am still learning. I am a go go go type person. Relaxing is simply not in my vocabulary. I never stop moving from the second I wake up to the time my head hits the pillow. BUT......over the past year or so I have learned to take time out for myself. Who knew it could be so wonderful?!?! {let alone inspiring!!} What I have learned when I walk away from my business for a little while is that I give my brain time to recharge. I am a better photographer, wife and friend.

4. My clients
Absolutely!!! Your energy is contagious!!! It helps to guide my thoughts and which direction I will go with our session. The more open minded are you and willing to try new things.....the better!!

5. Architecture
Most of the time when I walk into a session....I don't have a plan. I wait until I get there. I see where the light is coming from, and I look at the buildings around me. I let the architecture and light guide me with posing. {or the trees, earth, water...whatever is surrounding me} Once you find good light in a space, you can make anything work.

6. Music
Oh Em Gee. Where would any of us be without the music we love?? I can honestly say I listen to everything. Well.....everything except Country. I know I know.....don't hate me. I have given it a valiant effort over the years, but I just can't do it. Music soothes the soul and has so many purposes, but what I find most inspiring is when I really listen to the words When I am editing or driving and blaring it so loud I'm likely to go deaf. It keeps my brain clear, my heart open and a smile on my face. Ideas just rush to my brain that sometimes I have pulled over to write everything down so I don't forget.

7. My family and friends
The time I get to spend with my family and friends can be so few and far between during the busy season, that I cherish every second with them more then they will ever know. In my opinion, it is way better to listen then to speak.....and listening to their views of the world and things they love on a daily basis helps keep me revived to make every day a great day. They are so inspiring to me through their fashion, decorating, what shows they are watching, how their jobs are going.....I love it all.

8. Movies
Looking for an instant fix? Watch a movie. Any movie. Look at the lighting, the cinematography, the wardrobe. Movies rule. Enough said.

9. Walking
Boy do I love walking. It can be by myself, with Onyx, with Chris and Onyx....or with my friends. It's like meditation for me. Breathing in the fresh air, people watching, or by simply looking up. Not only can you be inspired by the things around you during a walk, but it keeps your mind open for new ideas to pass through.

10. Magazines
This may be a common one, but sometimes so overlooked. For me.....I turn into a kid on Christmas morning when I get my Anthropologie catalogs in the mail. To see the clothes, the lighting, the backdrops....everything in those catalogs makes me swoon. I also love Vogue or any of other fashion magazine as well. Checking out the poses in there can help revive any portrait session.

Sophia turns one

Sophia turns one!! It is truly one of my favorite ages to photograph. :) Oh. my gosh. Sophia is so cute and such a happy baby!!! I truly loved spending time with Greg, Emily and their amazing little girl. You may know Greg from his stunning wedding venue The Lafayette Grande and his catering company Traveling Chef Catering. Seriously awesome venue and the food is soooooo good. :)
We actually did this session on Sophia's one year birthday too. So cool!!
I am excited to share a glimpse of happiness from such a cool family.....Happy Birthday Sophia!!!

Kristin & Patrick {wedding}

There is something to be said about a May wedding. I'm not sure if it's my favorite month because it's my birthday month, or I love it because of those giant white, pink and purple trees that bloom and smell delicious only a few weeks out of the year. Either way.....I love May weddings!! I went to high school with Kristin, and when she called me up to interview for her wedding.....I was ecstatic. Kristin has this grace about her. When she walks into a room....she brings peace, sunshine, and love. She met her soul mate, Patrick, while working at GM....so cars are kind of their thing. ;)
We had a rain plan in place.....but never turned to Plan B. The Universe was on our side this day as we walked around the gorgeous grounds of Meadowbrook Mansion at Oakland University. It was great to spend some time with amazing people, vendors, and staff this day. Thank you Kristin and Patrick from the bottom of our hearts. Chris and I had a blast documenting your wedding day. Big hugs!!

my thoughts on turning 30...

So here it is. I am no longer a 20-something. I am 30. Oh.my.gosh.

But you know.....as I sit here with a belly full of birthday cake, I just have to smile. Because today has been a great day. and Life Is Good. Probably my best birthday yet.......

I feel so full of love. But I don't think it is a coincidence. The more I think about it, the more I realize that life just gets better with age. I think you love more, laugh more, and appreciate more. Even though my body already aches some days, {boo on that!} I feel like I have more patience and a deeper understanding for things then I did even 5 years ago, and definitely 10 years ago. I have learned that being grumpy just takes up too much of my good energy. I also realize that I laugh at pretty much everything....which can get me in trouble at times, but I just try not to take things too seriously. Life has some crazy ups and downs, but I try not to concentrate on the downs. When things get really tough...sure.....I will allow myself to be sad for a little while. But not too long. Because life goes on, and there are always several good things that come from each situation that life throws at us. Being positive only brings positive energy into your life. I truly believe that with all of my heart.

With that said, I really had no idea where I would be at the age of 30.

But I am grateful every single day.

Cheers to life, love and laughter everyone. Because everyday you wake up, you have a choice. ;)

Holly and Brian {engagement}

Recently my mom and I road tripped it to Chicago to meet some amazing clients Holly and Brian. I went out there to photograph their engagement session, and deemed it appropriate to spend some time with my mom for mother's day weekend. Needless to say....we had a blast!! We ended up spending a lot of time with Holly and Brian....and I seriously would not have wanted it any other way. Oh. my gosh. These two are so nice and kind and opened up their hearts and home to us. I found myself not wanting to leave. One more day there would have been perfect!! It brings me great pleasure to share some of their engagement pictures with you. I am so looking forward to their wedding this November!! Yay!!!

Julianne and Rob are charming, kind, and have all sorts of style. Julianne brings sunshine wherever she goes. I love how they light up when they see each other. These two lovebirds were married in an atrium at the Westin in Southfield, Michigan. I loved everything about their wedding, right down to the barber shop quartet who serenaded the cocktail hour as well as with a song to the bride and groom before dinner.
