The Raspberry Pi is to be manufactured in the UK.

The Raspberry Pi is to be manufactured in the UK after a multi-million pound deal between Premier Farnell and Sony UK Technology Centre.

Sony’s site, in Wales, will initially produce over 300,000 units for customers across the world, and the deal is expected to create up to 30 new jobs.
The credit card-sized computer developed in the UK by the Raspberry Pi Foundation is aimed at stimulating young people’s interest in computer programming. It was launched in February this year, and had previously only been manufactured in China.
Eben Upton, Co-Founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation said: “When Pete Lomas and I built the first Raspberry Pi’s for testing last year, we never dreamed it would become so popular so quickly. The Raspberry Pi was built to develop young people’s skills in computer programming and electronic engineering; we had always intended and hoped that the Raspberry Pi would also be manufactured within the UK.
“We’re really delighted that Premier Farnell has been able to find such a reliable manufacturer as the Sony UK Technology Centre. By bringing the production of a UK product back into the country alongside its development and distribution, we can help support our economy and demonstrate the capabilities the UK has in terms of technological innovation, invention, and manufacturing.
“We look forward to continuing our work with Premier Farnell and now, the Sony UK Technology Centre, in the Raspberry Pi Foundation’s next stage of growth.”
Sony UKTec would be investing in additional equipment to fulfil order requirements, and providing flexibility and scalability to cater for potential increases in demand, which included additional automated circuit board equipment and double side reflow machinery. The site would also be extending its manufacturing process capability to include a technique called package-on-package (PoP), which allowed the processor and memory to be stacked on top of each other, reducing the PCB footprint and the distance that high-speed signals need to travel, improving overall reliability.

Nokia will start selling its new smartphone, the Lumia 920, in November, sources at European telecoms operators said.

The Lumia 920, which uses Microsoft's Windows software, is Nokia's bid to catch up with Apple's iPhone and a string of popular phones using Google's Android software, like Samsung's Galaxy models.
Experts said this was potentially Nokia's last chance to break into the most profitable part of mobile phone market and secure its future.
The new phone, which with its rounded edges and colourful covers look similar to its predecessors, was unveiled earlier this week and drew a thumbs down from many analysts, who felt it lacked the "wow" factor to make big inroads against rivals.
They were also unsettled by Nokia's refusal to say when the phone, and the smaller Lumia 820 models, would go on sale, or to give details on the price and operator partners.
Once the world's biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia fell behind rivals in the fast-growing smartphone market and has struggled to catch up, racking up more than €3bn in operating losses in the last 18 months and forcing it to cut 10,000 jobs, as well as sell assets.
By going on sale in November, the Lumia 920 will hit stores in time for the key holiday sales season.
It will be priced similar to Samsung's flagship Galaxy S3, operators in several countries said.
The Galaxy S3 sells for around €580.
But the phone will probably land more than a month after Apple's new iPhone and will face stiff competition from Samsung, which last week unveiled the world's first smartphone with the Windows Phone 8 software that the Lumia 920 will use, as well as new models from HTC and Google's Motorola.
An executive at an eastern European telecoms operator said he would start selling the Lumia 920, which features a high-quality camera and touchscreen that can be used with gloves, in the second half of November, adding larger countries would receive the model earlier that month.
"The problem is that Nokia has temporarily destroyed the market for its own phones," the executive said, declining to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media on the subject.
"Nobody will buy the old Windows phone and until the new Lumia comes, the market is absolutely dead."
Industry sources said this week that Nokia had cut the prices of its older smartphones in a bid to boost demand until its new phones reach the market.
Analysts expect the Finnish firm to lose another €700m in the July-September quarter and to sell around 3.6 million Windows phones, down from last quarter.
In comparison, Samsung sold more than 20 million Galaxy S3 smartphones in just 100 days.
Samsung has become the world's biggest smartphone maker as Nokia's share of the market has plunged to less than 10 per cent from 50 per cent during its heyday before the iPhone was launched in 2007.
The Lumia 920 is expected to go on sale in the US around the same time as in Europe.
A Nokia spokesman declined to comment.
While some operators and retailers said they would focus on the new iPhone and rival models, others were more positive.
"It looks really good, they chose to differentiate with the design and appearance, which are very important to people. The camera technology is very interesting," said Sami Aavikko from DNA Finland, the third-largest carrier in Nokia's home market.
Ernest Quingles, managing director for Italian distributor Tech Data, said he expects the new Nokia devices to be successful, but questioned whether Windows Phone can attract as much interest from developers as Android and the iPhone.
"What we need to check still now is how Microsoft and Nokia will be able to develop the apps part," he said.
Part of the reason for the limited success of Windows phones so far is that they support only 100,000 or so apps, compared with about 500,000 or more for Android or iPhones.
Apple's and Google's entrenched positions mean consumers have invested heavily in apps and content with them, and that could discourage switching to a new mobile system.

Nokia Lumia 920 pricing and release date revealed

The Lumia 920 is Nokia’s flagship smartphone running on Microsoft’s latest mobile OS, Windows Phone 8.

When the Lumia 920 was unveiled last week it was shown off without two key pieces of information – price and release date.

The India launch date and price is still a mystery, but the device is expected to launch SIM-free in Germany for Euro 600 (Rs. 42,000 approx.). The Lumia 820, which is Nokia’s mid range Windows Phone 8 device, will be priced at Euro 450 (Rs. 32,000 approx.) for the SIM-free version. The smartphones are expected to hit store shelves in November.

Nokia announced the Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820 at an event that Nokia held jointly with Microsoft last week. You can catch the specifications of both the smartphones and details of the launch event here.

India telecom subscriber base drops to 944.81 million

For the first time the telecom subscriber base in the country has registered a decline. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) data, users base has dipped to 944.81 million in July from 965.52 million.

The TRAI reveals that the decline is driven by the wireless segment, which saw a slump of 26.1 million. Reliance Communications saw a loss of 20.48 million users. RCom was followed by Tata Teleservices, which lost about 2.4 million customers. Uninor lost more than 1 million users, while Videocon 0.41 million. Loop Mobile and state-run MTNL lost around 0.15 million subscribers in July.

RCom says removal of inactive users has caused the drop. "With an objective to release the substantial blocked resources of number series and in context of DoT's stringent guidelines on issuance of fresh numbers, RCom has decided to deactivate the inactive prepaid subscribers who have not had any usage in the last 60 days," a RCom spokesperson is quoted as saying.

The data further show that the share of urban subscribers has declined to 63.83 percent from 64.40 percent whereas share of rural subscribers has increased to 36.17 percent (from the month of July 2012). Moreover, subscription in urban areas has decreased from 621.76 million in June, 2012 to 603.03 million at the end of July, 2012. Subscription in rural areas decreased from 343.76 million to 341.79 million during the same period. The monthly growth rate of urban and rural subscription remained at 3.01 percent and 0.57 percent respectively.

On the mobile number portability front, by the end of July 2012 about 59.31 million subscribers have submitted their requests to different service providers for porting their mobile number. The status of MNP requests in various areas is given below:

In the wireline segment, total subscriber base slumped from 31.43 million to 31.33 million by July-end 2012. Net reduction in subscriber base was 10.1 lakhs. Market share of all service providers in wireline segment is shown below:

Number of broadband users, however, has seen a decent growth. Total broadband subscriber base has grown from 14.50 million at the end of June 2012 to 14.68 million at the end of July 2012, thereby showing a monthly growth of 1.20 percent. Yearly growth in broadband subscribers is 17.40 percent during the last one year (August 2011 to July 2012).

A milestone in our nation’s space capabilities, says PM

Sriharikota, Sept. 9:

The 100th Indian space mission was a grand success with an Indian rocket blasting off carrying two foreign satellites from Sriharikota.

On a cloudy Sunday morning, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C21 (PSLV-C21) blasted off carrying two satellites from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

On the terrace of the media centre, a large contingent of media persons cheered the entire journey of the rocket till it vanished into the clouds.

At 9.53 a.m., the PSLV-C21, 44 metres tall and weighing 230 tonne, launched the French earth observation satellite SPOT 6 along with a micro-satellite from Japan into a 635-km polar orbit. PSLV-C21 is the eighth flight of PSLV in “core-alone” configuration (without solid strap-on motors). This is the 22nd consecutive time that a PSLV rocket has taken a satellite.

Coming out behind the lush green trees, the rocket with orange flame in the tail burst in to the sky amid cheers of scientists in the control room and the media team assembled at the terrace of the launch centre.

After 18 minutes into the flight, PSLV-C21 delivered SPOT 6 and a few seconds later Proiteres into their intended polar orbit. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh along with Minister in Prime Minister’s Office V. Narayanasamy witnessed the launch.

There was a two-minute delay in the launch due to impact of possible debris in space, K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), told newspersons later.

With a lift off of 712 kg, SPOT 6 is the heaviest satellite to be launched by PSLV for an international customer. The Japanese micro-satellite Proiteres, carried as an auxiliary payload, has a lift off mass of 15 km. The cost of the rocket was Rs 90 crore. “We have recovered the project cost,” he said without giving details.

SPOT 6 is a French Earth Observation Satellite capable of imaging the earth with a resolution of 1.5 metre. This latest generation optical remote sensing satellite is built by Astrium SAS, a leading European space technology company.

Proiteres, on the other hand, is intended to study powered flight of a small satellite by an electric thruster and observe Kansai district in Japan with a high resolution camera.

ISRO has sent 29 foreign satellites successfully to the orbit, including today’s launch.

The successful launch of SPOT 6 would make ISRO’s PSLV rocket a strong contender to carry SPOT 7 planned by Astrium SAS soon, said Radhakrishan. India has one of the largest constellations of remote sensing satellites in the world providing imagery in a variety of spatial resolutions ranging over a metre to 500 metre. With 12 remote sensing/earth observation satellites orbiting in the space, India has proved its capability in the remote sensing data market.

A cheerful Prime Minister later addressing scientists at the mission control room said today’s “launch is a milestone in our nation’s space capabilities”.

The launch of these satellites on board an Indian launch vehicle is testimony to the commercial competitiveness of the Indian space industry and is a tribute to Indian innovation and ingenuity, he said.

Google is releasing a new version of its YouTube video app for iPhones that will for the first time feature advertising but will not be pre-loaded on Apple's popular smartphones.

The new YouTube app will be available for download at Apple's App Store this week, Google said in a blog on the company website.
Web-connected smartphones are increasingly important to YouTube's business.
One billion of YouTube's daily video views now occur on mobile devices, said Google.
Earlier this year YouTube said it was streaming 4 billion videos every day.
The new YouTube app for the iPhone will feature thousands of additional videos, according to the blog post, as well as improved features for finding videos and sharing videos on social networks.
Unlike the previous version of the YouTube iPhone app, the new version will feature online advertising, a Google spokesman said.
Online ads generate the bulk of Google's revenue, the world's No.1 Web search engine, and YouTube already offers ads on its mobile website and on the version of the app for Android smartphones.
Apple said last month that its license to include the YouTube app in the iOS operating system used by the iPhone and iPad had ended.
The relationship between Google and Apple has frayed over the years, as the shift from PCs to mobile devices has increased the competition between the two companies.
Earlier this year, Apple said it would dump Google's mapping software from its mobile devices.
Apple is holding a press event in San Francisco on Wednesday where many expect the company to unveil a new version of its iPhone.
YouTube has been among a handful of apps that came pre-loaded onto the screens of Apple's mobile devices since the original iPhone was introduced in 2007.
The pre-installed YouTube app - which was actually built by Apple using YouTube standards - was not as full-featured as YouTube's own website, but it was popular.
According to data measurement firm Nielsen, YouTube was the third most popular iPhone app by users, including both pre-installed apps and downloaded apps, in the U.S. in June.

AirBase Systems device CanarIT can detect odours in ambient air and in hazardous environments.

Environmental monitoring technology start-up AirBase Systems has launched CanarIT – a ‘low-cost, easy-to-use’ air quality sensor device capable of monitoring odour.

CanarIT provides real-time measurements of odour in ambient air and can detect environmental hazards. The odour module is regulated against the European Odour Unit (OUE) concentration scale, which is based on the response to 40 ppb of n-butanol as defined in EN 13725.
It combines nanotechnology sensors with Internet connectivity, via Wi-Fi or GSM, to deliver air quality data to its AirBase data cloud. The data is then made available on the Internet or as a subscription alert service to mobile phones, designed for municipalities, community groups, citizen scientists and individuals worldwide.
“When citizens complained about bad smell in their neighbourhoods, the authorities had to send over specially trained personnel (sniffers) and they would verify the complaint,” said Liad Ortar, co-founder and VP Marketing of AirBase Systems. “With the incorporation of the new nano-tech odour sensor in our CanarIT unit, people and authorities can receive real-time information through the Web and be alerted just as things happen.”

Other AirBase Systems devices measure Ozone (O3), NO₂, Total VOC (Volatile Organic Compound), Particulate Matter (Total Suspended Particles), humidity, temperature and noise.

Google+ custom URLs start rolling out

Few weeks ago Google had unveiled custom URL service for Google+ profiles and pages, taking on vanity URLs offered by Facebook. And now Google has expanded the service to more brands and verified individuals.

Users, part of the roll-out, will see a notification on the top of the homepage that says, “your page is preapproved for the custom URL: google.com/CUSTOM followed by a Claim URL button that you’ll certainly want to push.” Such users will also be notified via an email to prompt them about claiming theirs.

It's notable the custom URLs service does not let you pick your own URL, but you can seek a different one. Google says once you select your custom URL, you cannot change or transfer it.

“We’re making these changes over the next few days, and we’ll be offering custom URLs to many more profiles and pages in the future. We appreciate your patience in the interim, and we look forward to hearing your feedback,” says Saurabh Sharma from the Google+ team.

Earlier, Google+ custom URLs rolled out to a limited number of 'verified' users. Google revealed that few celebrities such as David Beckham and pop singer Britney Spears, along with brands like Toyota, Delta, and Hugo Boss have already received the custom URLs.

In another Google+ news, the social networking site is now going to get new notification controls. Users can now “mute” notifications on their profile. Moreover, users can subscribe for e-mail alerts for updates on certain Circles they want to.

"For these select circles, we often have news we really want to share — like getting engaged, or landing a job," Austin Chang from the Google+ team, wrote in a post. "In these cases you can now check 'Also send email' when sharing, to help make sure your friends see your message."

New iPhone not expected to slow Android growth

Google's Android operating system will continue to dominate the smartphone market, growing its lead by 10 percent in the second half of the year despite the upcoming iPhone 5 launch, according to a new report from Digitimes Research, the analyst arm of daily trade paper Digitimes.

Android already leads the market, accounting for approximately 60 percent of all smartphone shipments in the first half of 2012. But even with the forthcoming launch of the next-generation iPhone, Android market share is expected to grow to 70 percent of the global market in the second half of the year, Digitimes Research senior analyst Luke Lin estimated.
Contributing to its growth, several major Android handset vendors like Samsung, Huawei, and ZTE are starting to increase shipments, while second-tier and regional vendors are "aggressively" launching new entry-level Android handsets in China, Lin said.
Android will, however, likely see a "rather weak" year-over-year shipment growth rate in 2012 due to of its strong shipments of 224 million units in 2011. Meanwhile, Nokia and Microsoft's aggressive promotion of Lumia $49.99 at AT&T Windows Phones may be paying off. Windows Phone shipments are expected to more than double year over year to an estimated 21 million units overall in 2012.
Shipments of Apple's iPhone are expected to surpass 125 million units in 2012 compared to 93 million units in 2011. Lin estimated that the iPhone will see year-over-year growth of less than 50 percent, lower than it's been in the past two years.
However, with new iPhone hysteria is in full swing, several analysts have predicted that it could be the biggest debut Apple has ever seen.

Facebook finally deleting unwanted photos from servers

Facebook said this week that it has fixed a glitch that allowed links to deleted photos to stay live long after a user thought they'd been banished from the site.

Photos that users have deleted are quickly removed from Facebook profiles and newsfeeds, but if you happened to have a link to the deleted pic, that link stayed live for some time. An update to the Facebook network, however, has fixed the problem, a spokesman for the social network said.

"As a result of work on our policies and infrastructure we have instituted a 'max-age' of 30 days for our content distribution network (CDN) links," the spokesman said. "However, in some cases the content will expire on the CDN much more quickly, based on a number of factors."

"To be clear, the photos stop being shown to other users on Facebook immediately when the photo is first deleted by the user," he continued. "The 30 day window only applies to the cached images on the CDN."

The update was first noted by Ars Technica, which said the photo-deletion problem has been plaguing Facebook users for three years. The publication first questioned Facebook about the issue in 2009 and discovered back in February that it was still unresolved.

Twitter and Flickr manage to delete photos from their CDNs in "mere seconds," Ars said, but MySpace took months and Facebook took more than a year.

Ars tested out photo deletion on Instagram, which Facebook just acquired for $1 billion, and found that aside from a four-month delay on one photo, other pics were instantly deleted from Instagram's servers.

Well-known Chinese manufacturer Lenovo is preparing to release two new Android Tablet – IdeaTab A2107 and A2109, which should appear on sale in September this year.

New IdeaTab are running on Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Lenovo 7-inch IdeaTab A2107 supports data transfer using wireless technologies Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth, and is also equipped with a GPS-receiver. IdeaTab A2109, has a 9-inch display with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, 3-megapixel rear and a 1.3-megapixel front camera.

Intel security experts are working on finding ways to protect automobiles from electronic bugs and computer viruses.

Intel's McAfee unit, which is best known for software that fights PC viruses, is one of a handful of firms that are looking to protect the dozens of tiny computers and electronic communications systems that are built into every modern car.
Security experts say that automakers have so far failed to adequately protect these systems, leaving them vulnerable to hacks by attackers looking to steal cars, eavesdrop on conversations, or even harm passengers by causing vehicles to crash.
"You can definitely kill people," said John Bumgarner, chief technology officer of the US Cyber Consequences Unit, a non-profit organisation that helps companies analyse the potential for targeted computer attacks on their networks and products.
To date there have been no reports of violent attacks on automobiles using a computer virus, according to SAE International, an association of more than 128,000 technical professionals working in the aerospace and the auto industries.
However, Ford spokesman Alan Hall said his company had tasked its security engineers with making its Sync in-vehicle communications and entertainment system as resistant as possible to attack.
"Ford is taking the threat very seriously and investing in security solutions that are built into the product from the outset," he said.
A group of US computer scientists published a landmark study in 2010 that showed viruses could damage cars when they were moving at high speeds.
Their tests were carried out at a decommissioned airport.
SAE International charged a committee of more than 40 industry experts with advising manufacturers on preventing, detecting and mitigating cyber attacks.
"Any cyber security breach carries certain risk," said Jack Pokrzywa, SAE's manager of ground vehicle standards.
"SAE Vehicle Electrical System Security Committee is working hard to develop specifications which will reduce that risk in the vehicle area."
The group of US computer scientists from California and Washington state issued a second report last year that identified ways in which computer worms and Trojans could be delivered to automobiles – via onboard diagnostics systems, wireless connections and even tainted CDs played on radios systems.
They did not say which company manufactured the cars they examined, but did say they believed the issues affected the entire industry, noting that many automakers use common suppliers and development processes.
The three big US automakers declined to say if they knew of any instances in which their vehicles had been attacked with malicious software or if they had recalled cars to fix security vulnerabilities.
Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, said it was not aware of any hacking incidents on its cars.
"They're basically designed to change coding constantly. I won't say it's impossible to hack, but it's pretty close," said Toyota spokesman John Hanson.
Officials with Hyundai, Nissan and Volkswagen said they could not immediately comment on the issue.
A spokesman for Honda said that the Japanese automaker was studying the security of on-vehicle computer systems, but declined to discuss those efforts.
A spokesman for the US Department of Homeland Security declined to comment when asked how seriously the agency considers the risk that hackers could launch attacks on vehicles or say whether DHS had learned of any such incidents.
The department helps businesses in the manufacturing and transportation industries secure the technology inside their products and investigates reports of vulnerabilities that could allow attacks.
Bruce Snell, a McAfee executive who oversees his company's research on car security at the Beaverton, Oregon garage, said automakers are fairly concerned about the potential cyber attacks because of the frightening repercussions.
"If your laptop crashes you'll have a bad day, but if your car crashes that could be life threatening," he said.
"I don't think people need to panic now. But the future is really scary."
A McAfee spokeswoman said that among those hackers working on pulling apart cars was Barnaby Jack, a well-known researcher who has previously figured out ways that criminals could force ATMs to spit out cash (bit.ly/bqwEbS) and cause medical pumps to release lethal doses of insulin (reut.rs/sCD4Pr).
Makers of those products responded by saying they would work to improve security.
White hats are increasingly looking beyond PCs and data centres for security vulnerabilities that have plagued the computer industry for decades and focusing on products like cars, medical devices and electricity meters that run on tiny computers embedded in those products.
Automobiles are already considered "computers on wheels" by security experts.
Vehicles are filled with dozens of tiny computers known as electronic control units, or ECUs, that require tens of millions of lines of computer code to manage interconnected systems including engines, brakes and navigation as well as lighting, ventilation and entertainment.
Cars also use the same wireless technologies that power cell phones and Bluetooth headsets, which makes them vulnerable to remote attacks that are widely known to criminal hackers.
"There is tonnes of opportunity for attack on car systems," said Stuart McClure, an expert on automobile security who recently stepped down as worldwide chief technology officer of McAfee to start his own firm.
Security analysts fear that criminals, terrorists and spies are gradually turning their attention to embedded computers, many of which can be attacked using some of the same techniques as regular computers.
Automakers are rushing to make it easy to plug portable computers and phones to vehicles and connect them to the Internet, but in many cases they are also exposing critical systems that run their vehicles to potential attackers because those networks are all linked within the car.
"The manufacturers, like those of any other hardware products, are implementing features and technology just because they can and don't fully understand the potential risks of doing so," said Joe Grand, an electrical engineer and independent hardware security expert.
Grand estimates that the average automaker is about 20 years behind software companies in understanding how to prevent cyber attacks.
Chrysler said it was addressing security issues with industry groups and outside organisations including Battelle, a non-profit company that recently established an auto security research centre in Columbia, Maryland known as CAVE, or the Center for Advanced Vehicle Environments.
CAVE, which declined to discuss its research on auto security, has hired hacking expert Tiffany Strauchs Rad, a professor at the University of Southern Maine.
Last year, she was part of a team that identified flaws in prison networks that could enable hackers to remotely open or lock cell doors.
Concerns about such possibilities emerged after a group of computer scientists from the University of California and the University of Washington published two landmark research papers that showed computer viruses can infect cars and cause them to crash, potentially harming passengers.
The group, the Center for Automotive Embedded Systems Security, worked out how to attack vehicles by putting viruses onto compact discs.
When unknowing victims try to listen to the CD, it infects the car radio, then makes its way across the network to more critical systems.
For instance, the group came up with a combination attack dubbed "Self Destruct".
The attack starts when a 60-second timer pops up on a car's digital dashboard and starts counting down.
When it reaches zero the virus can simultaneously shut off the car's lights, lock its doors, kill the engine and release or slam on the brakes.
In addition to designing viruses to harm passengers in infected vehicles, the academics were able to remotely eavesdrop on conversations inside cars, a technique that could be of use to corporate and government spies.
The research group disbanded after publishing two technical papers, in May 2010 and August 2011, that describe multiple types of attacks and ways to infect cars using Bluetooth systems, wireless networks as well as the car's OnBoard Diagnostics port, which is also known as an OBD-II port (bit.ly/oao8a8).
One issue of concern is fighting ordinary PC viruses that could potentially infect cars when laptops and other devices are plugged into infotainment systems.
"Viruses are something that needs to be addressed directly. How we guard against that transfer to our system is a primary focus of our efforts," said Toyotaspokesman Hanson.

Microsoft opens registration for Windows 8 upgrade

Microsoft has officially opened registration for new Windows 7 users (who purchase Windows 7 PC between June 2, 2012 – January 31, 2013) to upgrade to Windows 8. Microsoft is offering the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $14.99. It may be recalled that the Indian consumers are entitled to a downloadable upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for a price of just Rs. 699.

Microsoft in a tweet announced, “"The @Windows upgrade offer is now available in 140 countries. Register now! http://windowsupgradeoffer.com."

To upgrade, users will be required to provide their 25-digit Windows 7 OEM product key as part of their online registration process. Starting October 26th, the company will start sending out promo codes through e-mail, which can be applied upon checkout within the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant.

It's notable the offer is valid till February 28th, 2013, after which users will have to shell out the full price – though the company has not yet revealed what it would be.

Microsoft is bit by bit rolling out Windows 8 software. The company recently released 90-day trial edition for its final version of Windows 8 Enterprise.

The Redmond giant has also announced a a limited-time offer that allows not only Windows 7 users, but also those stuck on Windows XP and Windows Vista to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just US $39.99.
