Our two leads

ECG Productions is proud to be a production partner on Tin Roof Films latest project: “Last Bullet”.  Directed by longtime friend of the compay Jason Winn, written by Michael Buchanan and shot entirely in HD on location at Riverwood Studios in Senoia, GA, the short film takes place in Cambodia during the Vietnam war.   From Tin Roof Films’ site:

During an intense nighttime skirmish between U.S. and Viet Cong forces, buddies Shane and Matt tumble into a bomb crater moments after a barrage of bullets assail them. Shane escapes serious injury but Matt is hit and rapidly losing blood from gunshots to the leg and stomach. Unable to pull Matt to safety, Shane makes a decision — to save his friend, he must leave him alone and run for help. Now by himself, Matt confronts his own mortality and when an explosion leaves him deaf, he cannot hear the radio blaring Shane’s return with reinforcements. As enemies and friends approach Matt’s position, who will Matt kill with his last bullet?

On set, ECG’s Jason Sirotin provided special effects makeup throughout the production, Jason Marraccini served as audio mixer and Josh McGill worked as boom operator.  Thanks to the well coordinated efforts of an absolutely first-class crew, production was completed in two 12-hour overnight shoots (7 PM - 7 AM both nights) with the post-production process beginning almost immediately after wrap.

Special effects were provided by Bob Shelley’s Special Effects International (keep any eye out for ECG’s forthcoming documentary on Bob) and included numerous explosions, pyrotechnics and over 130 rounds of weapons fire.

ECG Productions is also assisting with post, providing editorial consulting, color correction, visual effects, foley, sound design and ADR.  The film is currently slated for completion in early December.

A staple back in the ECG team’s old stomping grounds, the Boston Underground Film Festival is gearing up for another year of presenting the best and the most bizarre in underground cinema.  Here’s the rundown, straight from the BUFF website:

The Boston Underground Film Festival announces its eleventh annual competition celebrating the bizarre and insane in the world of film and video. The festival is held the last weekend of March 2009 and features the best in provocative and experimental features, shorts, animations, music videos, and documentaries.

The festival seeks the alternative, the confrontational, the political and the controversial. BUFF seeks films that celebrate alternative visions and sounds, offering a platform that encourages new ideas and work and pushes the envelope in style and content.

Produced and Directed by ECG’s own Jason Sirotin, 9.11.01: A Retrospective presents a unique look at the events of the day all of us have come to know so well through the eyes of the cast & crew of the Howard Stern Show.

The feature-length documentary weaves together footage from the studio (the show was live and on-air during the initial attack and aftermath) with candid interviews with the show’s regulars, members of the production crew and Howard himself.

The 93-minute film originally aired on September 10th, 2006 on HowardTV On Demand. Shortly after its initial broadcast it was submitted for a Telly award and later that year Jason Sirotin was recognized for excellence as the film’s Producer.

The film is not available online at this time.

The EcoFocus Film Festival will take place in Athens, GA September 18th - 21st.  The festival represents the latest in a series of collaborations between the University of Georgia’s Odom School of Ecology and Cine’ which have included EarthDance, a selection of environmental films from the Oakland, CA event of the same name and a reception, panel discussion, and screening of BURNING THE FUTURE: COAL IN AMERICA, co-hosted with the Sundance Channel.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE
Our aim is to engage audiences in an exploration of environmental and ecological themes through the medium of film. Founded in 2007, the EcoFocus Film Festival screens a diversity of films of high scientific and artistic quality to promote conversations on both the content and the medium by which environmental themes are conveyed. We intend for these films to serve as catalysts for increased public awareness, discussion and action to improve the ecological health of the planet and its inhabitants.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
The first EcoFocus Film Festival will be held in Athens, GA in Fall of 2008. Several full-length features will be screened along with panel discussions, events, and exhibits. We will also showcase short films selected from among filmmaker submissions. Past EcoFocus Events
On April 26, 2007, the first EcoFocus (then called Eco-Cine) event, representing a collaboration between the University of Georgia Institute of Ecology (since re-named the Odum School of Ecology) and Cine was celebrated by presenting EarthDance, a selection of environmental films from the Oakland, CA event of the same name. The second EcoFocus event occurred on October 12, 2007 with a reception, screening, and discussion of the film A CRUDE AWAKENING. Cine hosted guest speaker Dorinda Dallmeyer, Director of the UGA Environmental Ethics Certificate Program, who gave an introduction to the film and led a discussion following the screening. Most recently, the EcoFocus Film Festival and Sundance Channel co-hosted a reception, panel discussion, and screening of BURNING THE FUTURE: COAL IN AMERICA, a feature-length documentary on the coal industry, mountaintop removal, and citizen activism in West Virginia. The event, held on April 1st, 2008 at Cine in Athens, was an opportunity to increase awareness of the environmental and human health impacts of mountaintop removal coal mining, but also gave the audience a taste of what’s to come at the EcoFocus Film Festival in October. Burning the Future is one of several environmental documentaries to be shown on the Sundance Channel’s “The Green” weekly environmental programming season that kicked off on April 1st. Several audience members stayed on after the 7 pm screening to particpate in the panel discussion. Panelists included: Scott Shelley, Burning the Future cinematographer, Dr. Bruce Wallace, UGA Professor, Odum School of Ecology and Department of Entomology, and Justine Thompson, Attorney and Executive Director of GreenLaw.

GENERAL RULES
Short films (maximum 40 minutes) submitted to EcoFocus should in some way relate to the environment. We are open to a variety of environmental topics — climate, water, energy, agriculture/food systems, environmental restoration, biodiversity, advocacy, human impacts, policy, natural resource scarcity, natural history, narratives, etc. We seek films that promote awareness, discussion, and hopefully action among the film’s viewers. We are open to films about domestic and international topics, but also encourage films about the southeastern US and/or made by filmmakers from the Southeast.

One of the hardest things about contests like Rapid i Movement and the 48-Hour Film Project is the amount of concessions you have to make due to time constraints. All of us at ECG love the concept of Disconnect so much and were so happy with what we were able to accomplish in 50 hours that we decided to take some time to polish and refine a number of the elements of the film to get it closer to our original vision.

Trey Gregory is currently revising and expanding many of the graphical elements. Once he’s done I’ll begin adding them into the edit, as well as expanding and fleshing out the sound design. In addition, there was actually an expanded ending that we didn’t have time to incorporate that we’re going to try to add back in.

As XY.tv’s uncertain future began to seem more bleak, the Common Ave. team continued to take greater creative and logistical risks with the content of the show. The justification? With the staff and resources at our disposal and very little day-to-day oversight, why the hell shouldn’t we produce the content we had always wanted to create. The culmination of that attitude was Carol X Incorporated a 93-page script co-written by the key members of the Common Ave. team that was a combination 80’s-ski-movie-parody and morality play based on a modern interpretation of A Christmas Carol.

The 3 Ghosts

In order to get permission to use company resources to tackle such an ambitious project, the team had to agree to a few basic rules:

Mimey & Charlie

The first: no budget. Beyond the salaries of the employees working on the project and the gear already owned by the company, no additional funds could be spent on the production. This meant that no actors could be paid, we had to rely on locations we could shoot at for free and that we even had to produce two commercials for free in order to secure hotel rooms and the use of the ski lodge that served as the film’s main location.

The second rule: although structured as a feature film on the page, the content had to be split up into smaller episode-sized chunks so that it could be aired individually in Common Ave’s half-hour time-slot. Additionally, it had to be ready to air by Christmas 2006, less than two months from when the idea was concieved. In order to meet the deadline, four different editors each took a portion of the film through post-production and only after it aired in segments were the smaller elements combined to make the final feature film.

Representing the team’s first attempt at a fully realized feature film, Carol X was shoot in an amazingly short two weeks and edited in less than a month. The film pays homage to such popular Holiday films as Scrooged and A Christmas Story as well as the countless generic ski-lodge based comedies of the 80s that attempted to capitalize on the Caddyshack formula by simply substiting ski-instructors for caddies.

While by no means a perfect film, Carol X Incorporated stands as a testament to the talent and dedication of the ECG Productions team. Taking a feature film from script to screen with no budget on an almost impossibly short deadline is something all of us are extremely proud of. You never forget your first feature, and this was ours.

A new spin on the festival concept, the 2nd Annual Sonoma Environmental Film Festival was just announced for January 22nd - 25th, 2009.

MISSION & OBJECTIVE
The purpose of the Sonoma Environmental Film Festival (SEFF) is to educate, inspire and raise environmental awareness. Every day choices we make at home, at work, at school and leisure can nurture healthier lifestyles, help sustainable communities grow stronger while contributing positively to the health of our Planet.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Help us create a film festival that stands apart from others by submitting films that are inspirational and hopeful! We are looking for shorts, documentaries, feature narratives, and animation of all lengths with environmental and social themes.

Themes include (but are not limited to) the Ocean, Forests, water use and global water issues, eco fashion, organic gardens (urban, school, community), adventure stories, sustainable cultures, renewable energy and green building. We are looking for films that inspire positive solutions and positive action.

This is a non competitive film festival. It is the first of its kind in the world famous Sonoma Valley located 45 miles of the Golden Gate Bridge in California.

Filmmakers who are accepted will enjoy a weekend of inspiring environmental films, exciting green activities, a forum on sustainable living, lots of good food and drink and above all warm wine country hospitality.

4:31 AM was originally aired as a special Halloween episode of the XY.tv series Common Ave. Usually a light, family friendly comedic show, 4:31 AM was a major stylistic departure for the series and remains the edgiest content ever produced for the show.

Using an unconventional story structure and employing high-contrast lighting, the short was a way for the shows’ production team to satisfy their creative urges and break free from the safer “Common Ave. formula”, if only for a single episode. At the time of production it was becoming clear that XY.tv might be on the wane and the Common Ave. team took every opportunity to push the creative boundaries of the show as far as possible, as also illustrated by Carol X Incorporated, a 93 minute film aired as a multi-part holiday special that was actually the ECG team’s first feature.

No Signal was originally produced for the 1st Howard Stern Film Festival competition. The idea was conceived by Jason Sirotin, a huge Stern fan who at the time was working as the Head of Production and Programming at Boston-based cable station XY.tv. Crewed by the core members of the team who would eventually move to Atlanta to found ECG Productions, the film was selected as one of 10 finalists out of over 3000 submissions.

Though No Signal didn’t win the competition, it did directly lead to Jason being offered a job as a Producer for InDemand Networks and Howard TV.

Due to the film’s *ahem* “mature” content, it is not available online at this time.
