Even though it has been updated to 5.8, it cannot be automatically upgraded through Skype's update system. However, the upgrade is available through its official page. This may happen due to synchronization glitch that prevents the update checker from picking up the latest software from the server. That said, the issue is only momentarily and should be fixed in no time.

If you plan to update to the latest version through Skype's official page, make sure to log in onto Skype before you can initiate the upgrade. Alternatively you can upgrade your Skype via Softpedia website, that way you don't need to go through the sign-in process.

What's new in Skype 5.8?

Anyway, one of the new features is the support for full HD video calling. HD quality video calling requires a broadband connection of minimum 2 MB/s and a HD webcam (for example Logitech C920). Skype 5.8 also supports the video calling from the well-known social networking site, Facebook (note: it's still in beta phase). Group sharing is another feature in Skype that allows us to share our screen or any opened application with other participants without interrupting the video streaming. This feature essentially makes any kind of sharing (presentation etc) easily accessed by the defined group.

Skype 5.8 further enhances itself by supporting "Push-to-Talk" feature. This feature lets us set a hot key that can easily toggle on and off of our microphone and can be extended to disabling/enabling mute option.

What else you need to know?

Like any other software, by default Skype is set to start when Windows starts. In order to disable this setting, go to Tools > Options > General settings.

Its friendly interface make easy for you to connect to a FTP session, SFTP (SSH session) as well as connect to cloud services such as, Amazon S3, Windows Azure, Google Cloud Storage and Rackspace Cloud Files.

The size is relatively big (13.5 MB) and the download rate is pretty much slow; it took around 25 minutes to complete. During installation, it will ask you whether or not to install a third party software (Bonjour) which is not selected by default, so you don't have to worry about that. If have any other existing FTP clients, it can import the login(bookmark) details into CyberDuck. The interface is simple and sleek and you will know right away that this software is originated from Mac OS X.

4. GoFTP

GoFTP is a FREE full fledged FTP client with all basic and advanced features. The interface is simple, pretty much similar to other FTP clients I list above. This FTP client is for personal use and for a company with employee less than 50 people. In term of performance, GoFTP is working faster than other multi - threaded FTP clients. One thing that bugs me is the error that reads "Error: invalid socket or not connected".

Add-on compatibility

There are major improvements associated to add-on compatibility issue because none of my add-ons appear to be disabled, not like in previous upgrades. Because there are literally thousands of Firefox add-on used by millions of people, you may not have the same experience as mine.

Little changes we can see on the surface but Mozilla claims that there are lot of things going on under the hood. The areas that Mozilla claims has significant changes include the CSS, HTML5 and MathML support. Improved JavaScript Performance

Firefox 9.0 brings Javascript performance boost up to 30%. This is achieved through the usage of Type Inference (TI). Basically it is a SipderMonkey feature that analyzes variable values and statement on a running program that result in more efficient code.

New support to CSS3

1. font-stretch property

This property allows a particular text to be stretched out or shrink-ed in. There are 8 values that can be assigned to font-stretch property

text-overflow: ellipses was introduced since Firefox 7 where any overflow will have "..." appended to it at the right most end of an overflowed string. Firefox 9.0 brings more options on how the overflow text should be handled - you can end the text string with a hard clip, custom string or ellipses.

Example: If "abcdefgh" was centered in a small element, the following css property

text-overflow: ',' ellipsis;

could result in "abcd..."

Mozilla seems to struggle to keep up with Google Chrome browser but the release of Firefox 9.0 seems to give a renewed hope for Mozilla to really push forward. As a happy Firefox fan, I'm impatiently waiting for Firefox 10.0 which is due on the end of this month.

The preferences page has 3 tabs; General, Accounts and Advanced. Under General tab, you have the option to set whether the software should start during startup, updates check and language. Under "Accounts" you can specify at what interval the email check should be carried out and whether to turn off sound effect for incoming mail. Under Advanced Tab you can specify what browser to use to open your new mail.

Security

I know this is your primary concern. Mail Notifier has encrypted connections (HTTPS / SSL) feature. When you click on new email, it will be opened in default browser you set from Advanced tab. You should get Mail Notifier if you prefer simple notifier and when you have multiple Gmail accounts.

Our tests

To test this software, I choose the first mode; batch convert format. 2 PDF files from its own demo and 1 random PDF file from the internet are used to perform the conversion. The conversion took 6 - 8 seconds because the second PDF file is quite big in size. Inspecting the Word documents after the conversion was over, I found that most of content structure has been successfully preserved.
