Eagle Readers Unite for City-Wide Readathon!

This Saturday, January 28, 2012, Seattle Public Libraries are sponsoring a City-wide Middle School Readathon. Visit one of the branches listed below between 11am and 5pm and log hours of reading for Eckstein (families are welcome to participate as well)!

Snacks and pizza will be provided and the Grand Prize is a Kube 93.3 sponsored dance!

Tuesday, Jan 24, 2012 – Furlough Day, 3-hour Early Dismissal (11:20). Furlough days are a result of a difficult budget situation at Seattle Public Schools. Both the District and the SEA, the teachers’ union, agree that furlough days are the best way to minimize the impact to our students and prioritize classroom funding.

Friday, Jan. 27, 2012 – Snow Make-up Day

Dear Families, Seattle Public Schools will hold classes on Friday, Jan. 27 as a snow make-up day. No school was scheduled for next Friday, the day between semesters, but instead it will be used as a make-up day for one of the three snow days this week, as outlined in the 2011-12 school calendar. A determination on making up the additional snow days, most likely at the end of the school year, will be decided next week. There will still be a three-hour early dismissal on Tuesday, Jan. 24 for a scheduled furlough day for teachers and staff represented by the Seattle Education Association (SEA). That day cannot be used as a snow make-up day.

Information Night, February 16 for Incoming Families

Eckstein will be hosting an Information Night on Thursday, February 16^th, from 6:30 to 7:30p.m for our new and prospective 5^th grade risers and their families. NO reservations required. Also, there will be no planned or “self-guided tours” as we are trying to guide people to our Information Night. However, there will be scheduled activities to help transition the new 6^th graders before the 2012-2013 school year begins (TBA). Calendars – District versus Eckstein

If you go to the Eckstein website (www.ecksteineagles.org), if you click on links that re-directs you off-site, you may be directed to the DISTRICT’S website which posts the District Calendar (it says Eckstein, but it isn’t). Each school has their own Professional Development early release days – in addition to the District’s assigned Professional Development days – and this can vary by number and date. To see the updated ECKSTEIN calendar you will need to click on “calendar” on the left-hand side of the Home Page at www.ecksteineagles.org. This problem should be corrected by next year as the District works through updating their website. Sorry for the confusion.

Please note that we are changing the location of the presentation to the Nathan Hale High School Commons to ensure there is enough room for all who wish to attend. In response to our concerns about the equity involved in testing for advanced learning opportunities and what we have witnessed in the abilities of students enrolled in different programs at Eckstein, we have looked for better ways of meeting the needs of all kids in a heterogeneous setting. Wedgwood staff has begun the work of looking at cluster grouping and the works of Dr. Dina Brulles. Wedgwood is hosting Dr. Dina Brulles, author of The Cluster Grouping Handbook on Wednesday, October 26. Her presentation will begin at 6:30 in the Nathan Hale High School Commons. Dr. Brulles is co-author of The Cluster Grouping Handbook: A Schoolwide Model – How to Challenge Gifted Students and Improve Achievement for All (You can learn more about Dr. Brulles at www.giftededucationconsultants.com). Mr. Cronas and the Wedgwood community would like to extend the invitation to Eckstein staff and families. We hope you can join us on the 26th to learn more about cluster grouping.

Curriculum Night, Thursday, October 13, 7:00p-9:00p – Begins in the Auditorium

Prior to October 13, all parents should have received a handwritten copy of their student’s schedules. Please ask your student for the copy and bring it with you to Curriculum Night. To begin the evening, all parents/guardians report to the Auditorium for instructions. This is an evening for adults only and is not for individual conferencing.

Eckstein Middle School’s Curriculum night is right around the corner. On Thursday October 13, 2011 come walk the halls of Eckstein, meet your students’ teachers and don’t forget to stop by the library!

The University Bookstore is sponsoring our 2nd annual Curriculum Night Book Fair from 5:30-9:00pm. Bookstore staff will be on hand to help you with all of your book buying needs. A percentage of all sales will benefit the Eckstein Middle School Library.

Letter from the Principal – 9/19/11

Dear Eckstein Community—

At the end of last week we were informed of a decrease in staffing due to our enrollment numbers. Our enrollment is lower than what was anticipated so Eckstein will be losing .5 FTE.

To accommodate this decrease we will be combining some classes within our electives. In addition to changes in electives, we will be making changes to math classes based on the fall assessment given last week. To minimize the impact, our counselors will be working to make all changes and the balancing of classes this week. Starting tomorrow students will be informed of any changes by their grade level counselor.

We are truly sorry for the disruption. We know that students have already made connections with teachers and classmates. Our wonderful Eckstein teachers work closely on curriculum and instruction alignment so I am confident that the transition will be smooth.

Eckstein CLC Fall Registration (After School Activities)

Registration forms for Eckstein Community Learning Center after school programs will be available on Tuesday, September 20th. The CLC Fall programs will begin on Oct 10th and run through December 8th. CLC programs this Fall will include Robotics, Break Dancing, Drama, Photography, Homework Center, and more. Snack and transportation is offered to program participants. The Families and Education Levy funds CLC Programs, and is offered FREE to all Eckstein students.
