Kindle 2: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)

Amazon’s Kindle 2 is now available and it has been upgraded and improved from it’s original version. Admittedly this is a pricey item. Does it constitute a good deal? Well that’s really up to the person who might consider buying it. If you buy lots of books, then over time it might pay for itself. Bestsellers are available for Kindle for $9.99. But rather than try to justify the cost, let me describe it to you.

It’s thin. Like pencil thick thin. It weighs 10.2 ounces, which is a good deal less than the hardback I’ve been lugging around of late. It’s got the capacity for up to 1500 books and will let you read for 2 weeks on one charge (if you turn off wireless.) It is wireless, so you don’t have to hook it up to a computer to use it or download books. Amazon has a map to show you where their wireless Whispernet offers coverage. If you buy a book, they back up your download at Amazon.

For those with vision issues, the screen has no glare and no backlight and you can change the text size. You can email your own documents to your kindle, and can download audiobooks. For those that prefer, you can have your Kindle 2 read your book to you even choosing a male or female voice.

Yes, it is very gee whiz, and to me it almost looks like the computer tablets that they used on Star Trek. Who knows maybe they’ll come out with replicators next. Tea, Earl Gray, hot.

You may also want to get the Amazon Kindle 2 Leather Cover and the 2-Year Extended Warranty for Kindle 2. Again, you decide if it’s worth the price tag.

I saw this today and it immediately made it to my wish list, and I don’t go anywhere currently where I need this kind of an organizer. But it’s handiness at home makes it worthwhile alone. I can see using this organizer for scrapbooking or one for each child’s homeschool books and supplies. Yes, I dream of the time where everyone knows where they can find a pair of scissors. But if I was doing co-op, it would really come in handy toting back and forth books and supplies for any class I was teaching. If I was still sitting through basketball practices, I’d load this up and make it my EHO review resource bin. Review items, yellow notepads, pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers…maybe even my laptop. Oooh, the wonder of it all!
