Comment on Initial Thoughts on Affinity by Canva by The Dude

The following commentary is from a 35 year veteran of digital graphics triple-a games and hero vfx for top-tier cinema.

The original Affinity apps by Serif were excellent. By all means well worth the $165. For everyone. Unfortunately we're all familiar with horror stories catastrophizing buyouts and takeovers. There has never, not ever, been a handover of corporate operations that ended well for any company or it's products. That's why you've never heard the phrase happy takeover. The word 'takeover' itself, implies hostility.

I'm swiftly careening off-track...

The bungle they've introduced here this week is nothing short of a shitshow execution covered in lipstick for the cameras; and that's on a high-end workstation.
I couldn't get the app to run properly. I hammered the hell out of it. Nothing responded as it should. It's a mess of everything from the past shredded into bits and thrown into a pile of dogshit for you to figure out what the hell is what. The ideology behind this new app is that of a lemur on meth, &/or a Terrance McKenna protégé on too many shrooms.
In short - it's just another overproduced, undertested nightmare that forces you to make a massive number of security compromises on your machine while requiring a live real-time connection online to Canva in order to function.

Free is never free. This app is after your soul.

I feel Affinity 20-twenty-whatever is just another pile of smoke and mirrors brought to you by an overpaid group of self-adulating money-mongers looking to dominate and manipulate your time, your actions, your life - promulgated by their lengthy preposterous speeches filled with baseless accolades of greatness and perfection when all they really are is a spare-tire sideshow of sweaty old used car salesman in slimy polyester looking to rope you into a lifelong state of perpetual dismay as they keep your retinas glued to a monitor garishly wishing you were somewhere else.

It's a lot more fun and far more productive tossing a couple grand in the drink for the mud hut subscription, at least you know where that dick's been.

I have the same issue. Setting the Shuffle by setting to by albums does not work. Hitting the Shuffle button anywhere always shuffles by track not album. Also Shuffle often mysteriously turns off by itself. In addition hitting Play in a playlist does sort of respect the shuffle by album, but it is not random. It always starts with the same track. It does not 'shuffle'.

In addition to the shuffle issue, the display of the history and the queue is annoying in the Miniplayer view. You can no longer hide the History to see what is coming up next, you have to scroll down. The behavior of the queue has likewise changed in a frustrating way. Prior if you were playing a Playlist, the queue for the Playlist automatically updated. This does not seem to happen anymore. Finally, if there is only one track left in a given queue, you can not fast forward to skip the track to go to an empty queue.

It is not clear what the benefits of the changes made to the Music app in Tahoe are. Usability has certainly suffered from them.

if i'm alting a meme, i will describe the meme as faithfully as possible.

but if i'm alting a picture I took, my post will describe the picture, but then my alt will actually give a lot more context, provided i have the spoons to do so. I try really hard to give alt every time, 90 ish %

The last shark film I saw was 1999’s “Deep Blue Sea” – it was childhood favourite. But as a genre it’s never interested me. But this one sounds interesting. So maybe I’ll wet my beak with it :)

Hello Michael, I am an artist who used to live in Anchorage, and frequent The Java Joint (circa 1989-Dec. 92) on a regular basis. I even was commissioned by the owners to do some painting of the tables. I did a huge piece, sectioned in 5, 2'x6' of this Mezzo-Indian Sun. While I moved to Miami, The Disastronauts approached me to do an album cover, sadly that fell through. I was on one of your pages: year-50-day-207 (comments closed) and I was wondering if there were any pictures of the stage with my art there? I even managed to make a similar piece for KYES Channel 5 for a kids morning show with an airbrushed vest for a host I think was African-American, which was directed by Carol Katz, but she never returned my calls and have subsequently been bought out.

I hadn't heard that. Makes sense, though, and is good to know (or at least theorize about). And we've actually kept the "officially expired" tests around as "just in case" measures, so maybe that'll come in handy at some point down the line.

Though I hope not.

Not that this is terribly convenient when in a rush, but I've read that the control/test stripe is the gold standard of test viability - that even if the test is expired, as long as the test stripe shows up, the real test should still be valid.
