We have arranged for three (possibly four) authors who fall into the self-published genre to visit and talk about their books and to share how to self publish. Hope to see you there!

Darcy Polny

Author of Jelly Bean Jake - Full of Beans

Darcy is an accomplished artist, award-winning illustrator and budding author with a great imagination. Jelly Bean Jake is Darcy's first children's book based on some of his own experiences as a child. He has a formal art education from the Alberta College of Art and is a fine artist exhibiting rich pastels and poignant acrylic paintings at various Canadian art galleries. With 16+ years as a partner in a graphic design firm, his diverse experience in life and art give Darcy the depth and talent to create a book like Jelly Bean Jake - Full of Beans. With the help of a magic pen, Tabetha escapes the dreary walls of her hospital, writing her way into faraway worlds where adventure, friendship, and incredible challenge reveal the inner strength that lies hidden within her.

His Website: http://www.thesecretworlds.com/

Erika Knudson:

Erika has written three novels. Beyond the Threshold of Death and Resurrected, which are the first two instalments in her vampire saga and just recently, Awakened has been released. It is a separate paranormal tale, yet it does have tie-ins with her vampire saga. Awakened gave Erika the opportunity to explore another genre she has always been fascinated by: the idea of magic, paranormal abilities and witchcraft. Erika has also written short stories that were published in two anthologies. Who knew writing a picture book could be so curiously complicated?

Teresa has been a children’s book reviewer since 1996 and has written commentaries for The Globe and Mail, Review Press Reporter, and Canadian Children’s Book News.

Teresa Toten is the author of Onlyhouse and The Game. The Game was short listed for a Governor General’s Award for Young Adult fiction. Her new novel, Me and the Blondes pokes fun at groovy English teachers and chaotic open-plan schools.

CM Magazine Profile of Teresa Toten: http://www.umanitoba.ca/cm/profiles/toten.html

March 18th, 2010 – Margaret Mackey

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Academy at King Edward

8525 - 101 Street, Edmonton, Alberta

Phone: 780-499-2927

Please note the new venue for our events. Twenty years ago she began to research the attitudes and behaviours of recreational readers. The two decades since then have been momentous ones in terms of developing technologies and changing literacies. Studying readers has led Margaret down many multimedia pathways but her work with media and digital literacies is always framed in an understanding of the ongoing value of print literature and reading. She teaches courses in young adult literature, theories and practices of reading, and multimedia literacies.

Margaret’s topic: The Changing Face of the Child Reader

Children's recreational reading is mutating as children gain access to an ever-broader range of media and digital options. What do these rapid contemporary developments mean for children's reading today and for children's literature in the future?

February 23rd, 2010 – Barbara Reid Faculty Club Dinner

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Time: 5:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Dinner served at 6:30

FACULTY CLUB

University of Alberta

We are so EXCITED to have Barbara coming!
