Parabens in skincare and food products

We are talking about parabens. Parabens has been in the market for a long time and many industries have been using such chemicals since the date that we know off. From this article, we will give the meaning or definition of parabens. Then we will discuss about the controversial effects of parabens. Last but not least, we will move on to the solutions of parabens, meaning to say, substitution of parabens in the market.

Parabens are industrial chemicals used as a form of preservatives to withhold longer the life span of the products being used. Parabens have been widely used in the cosmetic, pharmaceuticals and food industries. Parabens main function is to protect the product from microbial growth. Parabens are so commonplace because of their low cost pricing, history long use since 1920s and the inefficacy of natural alternatives. Parabens are like SLES or SLS from my previous article. They are cheap to use and due to competition of other brand products, parabens found in many properties of a product especially in the cosmetic industries. Also, parabens come in many type of dilutions and brands. Every brand or dilutions comes from different process and therefore, the price strategy is also not the same for all types of parabens. Commonly found parabens in the chemical industries are methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben. Less common ones are isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben and benzylparaben. Therefore, in any skincare products the ingredient list which stated on the products can determine whether parabens are used by referring to the wordings or names above.

In many years, parabens has been called into questions and the controversy have arise many concerns. The most concern issue that has been brought up and lately been talking about is that parabens caused breast cancer. The reason is because high concentrations of parabens have been found inside the breast tumor, whereby the ability of parabens mimics estrogen. Estrogen is a hormone known to play a role in causing breast cancer. The person that found of such study Dr Philippa Darbre indicated that such parabens found in the breast tumor comes from the skin especially in the underarm positions. However, over the time there are many finding or saying from other professors that such case of breast cancer being the number one killer for women, cannot be taken into lightly but to further studies and investigated. Therefore as of to-date the time of writing, no direct evidence of parabens casual link with cancer. Other than that parabens also created allergic reactions. Our human skin tissue is a wonder of the world. Many different people have different types of skins that are not the same. Our skins are also affected by the food intake we consume daily, which is known as neutraceuticals (I will talk on this issue coming next). Therefore, parabens can only be allergic to people that are allergic to parabens same like if someone is allergic to aromatherapy, which is very hard to say. Studies also show that parabens contain weak estrogenic activities. Some estrogen in short is known to cause or create tumor that causes cancer. However, there is no thorough studies show that parabens with small dosage or low usage, which lead to small absorption into our skin, can cause the growing activities of estrogen.

There are a few substitutions for parabens. The well known type which is natural ingredients famously used ones are the grapefruit seed extract. However, studies also shown that such natural ingredients prone to be less effective. Other chemical preservatives used will be DMDM Hyadantoin, Methychloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazoline. This types of preservatives can only constitute very minimal to the ingredients for its acceptable level, which is less than 0.1% unlike parabens can go up to 0.75% at times. Therefore, the substitution of parabens might not be able to make the product last as long as where parabens are used.

Why use parabens if we are unsure of the safety and all. A lot of researches in the market shown the toxicology of parabens and also a lot of researches proof them to be wrong or need the case to be further experimented. There are no experimental data shows that parabens are toxic. However, my motto is still always remains that better be safe than sorry. After all, parabens effect is only for preservatives purpose unlike SLES or SLS, which also contains some washing agent effect. So folks, look for some product that is parabens free. Even if it does not last long, try buying something that is lesser in terms of volume. Instead of 1 liter shampoo, try to use something smaller volume like 200ml or 500ml, which can only last you within 3 to 6 months before finished using. A lot of cosmetic company, because of competitions and profit margin makings, nowadays; they care less of the consumers’ health. People would always want to sell at large volume like 1 liter to obtain more profits rather than 200ml whereby consumer behavior towards it is lesser. For food options, I always like to use organic food but however, we must sometimes beware not all organic foods are healthy in the sense that the food itself whether organic or not will also create problems to our human body like soya soy (I am going to talk about this later also).

Green – Eco Friendly

This is the topic I long want to write. This is because to be eco-friendly the topic is too wide to be discussed. What is the purpose of Eco-Friendly? Is this eco-friendly for the purpose of profit making whereby some company takes this as a mean to generate income? Or for sake of our future generations? Please share your thoughts on this topic. Feel free to give comments. First write what is the purpose and then follow by ways of helping our environment. Hope this will become an awareness to most people especially in the Asia region that contributes the least in such awareness.

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)… Is this a must?

GMP is the acronym for Good Manufacturing Practice. It is a standard of procedure for operating a factory or procedure for the pharmaceuticals products. This standard is well known in all cosmetics and pharmaceuticals being used this standard able to produce quality products with clean environment. Therefore, it is indeed very important for all people to follow such standards. However, a lot of people have been misguided and misuse such standard as a mean to increase the price of the goods while the quality of procedure remains stagnant.

Most important part in GMP is the paper work that a lot of cosmetics company especially in the Asia Pacific region did not follow thoroughly. What they do is, to get the certification, the just renovate the factory as according to the standard practice and at the initial stage to follow all procedures work including all paper work. When they obtained the GMP status a lot of procedure has been cut down or not followed in order to cut down cost of manufacturing due to the pressure from competitions. That is why I always stress that quality product does not come with good ingredients brand only but also the process of making the product. No matter how famous the contract manufacturer is there are still human mistake tends to happen.

Several weeks ago I made my trip to China and went visit a few GMP status contract manufacturer that produces cosmetics and soaps products. When I went into to the factory, we have to hear the proper attire before going in however, when I am inside I noticed most of the staffs or worker did not follow such procedures. Things get even interesting when I visited the soap factory supposedly to be well known on doing all types of famous soaps for a few well-known brands in the market especially the European and American market. I attached the photo of the factory which I managed to take a few. I see it does not even adhere to ISO or GMP standard and believe it or not ( I am not going to mention which brand is it), they are doing the packaging of a very famous brand.

So what had happened to the quality of our products especially in the cosmetic industry. Does we not have to adhere to any standards anymore even if it is use at the outer part of our body instead of the inner. Can cosmetic industry be up-going and produces quality products while selling at a higher price? Can our supply and demand chart to meet at equilibrium level whereby when our price increase demand to be followed due to higher quality and standards obtained? Is GMP standard remains integral? What about ISO Standard? Anybody any views please drop us your comment on how can we expect better quality and standard guaranteed.

SLES……

This subject is so vague to be discussed. I was sitting here for couple of minutes thinking of writing something with regards to my Sensual Aromatherapy that produced by my company DELPHIN. What is SLS? This is what I found in Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

“SLES is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent.SLES has been shown to produce eye or skin irritation in experimental animals and in some human test subjects. Some products containing SLES have been found to contain low levels of the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane, with the recommendation from the FDA that these levels be monitored.

Irritation

Although SLES is considered safe at the concentrations used in cosmetic products, it is an irritant similar to other detergents, with the irritation increasing with concentration.SLES has been shown to produce eye or skin irritation in experimental animals and in some human test subjects.The related surfactant SLS is a known irritant, and research suggests that SLES can also cause irritation after extended exposure in some people.

Carcinogenicity

Toxicology research by the OSHA, NTP, and IARC supports the conclusions of the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) and the American Cancer Society that SLES is not a carcinogen.The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies 1,4-dioxane to be a probable human carcinogen (having observed an increased incidence of cancer in controlled animal studies, but not in epidemiological studies of workers using the compound), and a known irritant (with a no-observed-adverse-effects level of 400 milligrams per cubic meter) at concentrations significantly higher than those found in commercial products.Under Proposition 65, 1,4-dioxane is classified in the U.S. state of California to cause cancer.

1,4-Dioxane contaminant

Some products containing SLES have been found to contain low levels of the known carcinogen 1,4-dioxane, with the recommendation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that these levels be monitored. The FDA encourages manufacturers to remove 1,4-dioxane, though it is not required by federal law.

Therefore is SLES good? I dare not say. Why not you tell me your opinion and I will give you my view. However, in our normal daily life, can we spend without SLES? Can our daily toiletry products be without SLES? As you know, pricing for toiletry and cosmetics has to be 3 to 5 times the cost of product due to the holding of stock and minimum quantity to be produced. Therefore, why there is so many price difference between one and another? What about retail rental outlet that has been increasing tremendously? Must this cost be taken into considerations also?

SLES has already been discussed many years ago back but yet until today there are still products with SLES being used. This has proven by the consumer spending power that products in booming and up-coming countries could not be afford to use with high quality ingredients. But what about countries that has already boomed and the bubble effect remains tighten?

I come across a few brand that my company is holding for Malaysia and Singapore that sells to hospitality industry only. The name of the brand is “SERENDIPITY” and “LE SPA”. This 2 products proven to be SLES free and it is a very good quality product to be used. Most interesting parts are both of this brands uses good purity essential oil as the fragrance being replaced by synthetic fragrance. Serendipity uses avocado and macadamia as the main ingredients to produce and originated in Australia. While Le Spa uses the ancient time of the Kingdom of Siam, which is Thailand, ingredients to produce the products. If you come across in Australia and Thailand for these products in the hospitality industry, you must really feel the products richness.

SLES comes in many types or dilutions. Higher the dosage gives better foaming agents. Although my products, I admit, Sensual Aromatherapy Spa, contains SLES from palm base oil. The quality that you obtained from this product is imaginable. Most of the ingredients used are palm based and we don’t use synthetic fragrance but LEMONGRASS essential oil. The formula is carefully being inspected and experimented that give the best quality and usage functions to the user. Yeah!! Terms and Conditions

Sales Contract: Upon receiving a confirmation of email from you, we will process your order by returning another email of acceptance. Upon acceptance by either signing the form or agreed upon replying the email, we will proceed with processing the products for delivery.

Payment Terms: All products has to be advanced pay provided unless agreed upon. Method of payment must be in Paypal or Western Union type. Charges by Western Union and Paypal will be borne by each party’s individual side. If the buyer does not or unable to proceed with the followings options of payment, then unless agreed upon in discussion of another method will be subjected upon written notice.

Delivery: All products once received payment, will be deliver out to the buyer within 3 working days, which does not include the postage time frame. Delivery charges will have to be borne by the buyer. Method of delivery can be in courier charges or normal registered postage, upon the discretion of the buyer. Confirmations of charges will be indicated to the buyer in the email of acceptance.

Warrants Claims: All package will be packed by the standard of international ruling. However, when there is a dispute of breakage during delivery, unless cannot be proven or the breakage is cost by the courier or postage company, we will repay back with another set of similar items. Therefore, please take note that for courier company there if the product is break by proven to them, they will reimburse back. However, if it is send through normal registered postage, the guarantee by the postage company will not apply.

We warrants in accordance with the following provisions that the object sold will be free from defects of quality and will be of the grade and quality agreed upon in lit. If the buyer should have asserted his warranty claims against us, therefore should not have voluntarily or fully satisfied the buyer’s claims.
