Care and Maintenance of SLA Batteries

PLEASE NOTE: Topping off of batteries is only good if they are discharged 50% or less! But not less than 20%. Most batteries have some sort of cycle rate:

IE: 500 cycles before they began to lose a lot of their power. That means 500 times charging. The fact is, that always using only 50% or less of your batteries capacity before charging again, will greatly extend its life. Conversely, using 80, 90 and 100% of the capacity will greatly reduce the number of cycles possible.

You should never discharge a lead acid battery lower than 80% of its capacity (20% charge left in the battery).
An SLA battery is generally rated at 300 cycles. This is an average. With better care and discipline, you can get more than 300 cycles from an SLA battery. Perhaps as many as 800, Of course, if you abuse the battery, it is likely that you will get less than 300 cycles from your battery!

Care and Maintenance of SLA Batteries (Sealed Lead Acid Batteries)
SLA batteries also love to be charged on a regular basis and leaving a battery in a very low state of charge for any period of time will do irreversible damage to the battery. SLA batteries that are fully charged may be stored up to six months with very little detrimental effect. But to keep them at optimum condition, charge your scooter battery pack often, after every use if 50% or below capacity is realized. If you are storing your EV for long periods of time, make sure your batteries are fully charged before doing so. If you will be away from your EV for more than six months or storing it for that period over a winter, make sure you or someone else charges the batteries before the mentioned six month period is up.

Undercharging - is caused by not allowing the charger to restore the battery to full charge after use. Continuously operating a battery in a partial or low state of charge may cause premature battery failure.
Batteries and freezing - It is also important to remember that a fully charged SLA battery will not freeze until the temperature drops below -92F, while a battery with a 40% charge will freeze at about -16F.

Physical Maintenance - An SLA battery is virtually maintenance free in terms of adding water or electrolyte (acid). You should never open it in an attempt to fill or repair it.

Dave has been driving electric motorbikes going on 4 years now. Our staff at the Green Tech Eco Center drive e-bikes as well. Three of the 1000 watt models have over 9000 kilometers on their odometer and we have only had to change the batteries just recently.

Here are some tips from Dave on how to care for and ride them to get the most out of your electric-bike:

Caring for & riding electric motorbikes!

1. If you use the bike daily, charge it daily. You cannot over charge the units, the charger shuts off when complete.

2. Never use the battery pack to ZERO so that you have to walk the bike home, draining the batteries to zero reduces battery life.

3. A low tire can cost you a lot of distance, make sure tires are always filled to spec and not low.

4. When climbing a long hill, do not carry another rider or a heavy load.
5. Before a hill if there is a downgrade, speed up to the speed limit so as to help your upward momentum.

6. Once a month check all visible bolts and screws they may need tightening.
7. Obtain same canned “fix a flat” carry it with you in case of a flat tire you can fix it on the spot.

8. Check the oil and change it once every year, the oil in the drive gear, not motor. Have technician show you how. It takes 3 drops.

9. Keep the entire bike, wheels and all surfaced except the seat waxed to help preserve the finish, especially here in the tropics.
10. Use Armoral or similar for the seat cover.
11. Always use the CENTER stand when the side stand is not as safe.
12. Use slow, steady, even and smooth acceleration to increase your driving distance.

Dying man- Gets his last wish is to ride his Electric trail bike

Environment Friendly Online store received an order for a ZEV5100 Trail and long range Utility electricbike. It is the world's first street legal electric trail and dirt road motor scooter! It can take to the pavement and serve as a commuter bike. The lead time on production is normally 90 days.

Shortly after the order was placed the man wrote an email politely asking if they could speed up the production since he was diagnosed with a fatal liver disease and he may not even have 90 days to live! His only wish is to be able to ride and enjoy the E-trail/utility bike as much as he can before he dies!

Here is the text from the email...the part with him dying was added only as a P.S!

"As to what color I would like. The Camo is what I choose. Ps I would would like it if your team could put together one for myself sooner than 90 days as I have been diagnosed with I rare type of Liver cancer called hamagioendothemaloma. Say that three times fast Ha! So I may have (months) to enjoy it. Thank you for what ever you can do for me. Best regards, P" (real name kept private to respect his privacy).

It turns out that this hamagioendothemaloma cancer, is the eighth most common cause of cancer deaths in men.

Two seconds after the staff got the email, the factory wrote back and said they would pull parts of their own personal E-bikes and have the other parts flown in by airfreight ASAP so the man can get it as soon as possible.

Everyone is working fast and furious to make this last wish come true for him. Will keep you posted as this develops.

As as update to this story, when the bike was made in record time, they tried for 3 days in deliver it and he wasn't around. Dave felt so bad, he was actually depressed, he was so worried that the customer had passed away before he could get the bike. Well he finally responded to an email saying he was out of town, and he has indeed gotten his wish. They e-trail bike has been delivered.

dropped by and gave an informal blessing
to the GT Eco Center.

The famous healing priest and good family friend, Father Fernando Suarez, dropped by our Green Tech EcoCenter to say Hi. He was in Puerto Princesa to do a tennis tournament for the prisoners at Iwahig Prison without Bars. We asked him to bless our establishment even though he wasn't really prepared, since it was just an impromtu visit, but he did perform an informal blessing of the center and all of the electric motorcycles and vehicles on the lot!

We had business guests from Manila, the makers of the fabulous Electric Jeepney, Rommel Juan and Bong Cruz and they were able to meet Father for the first time. Their E-jeep is now plying the roads of Makati and other cities in the Philippines to help cut carbon emmissions. Thousands of people die of bronchial disease every year in Manila from breathing the air pollution caused by the gas belching vehicles.

The city of Puerto Princesa bought one of their electric jeepneys which is housed and dispatched from our Green Tech EcoCenter. Dave and I have been testing it and using it in the city's various parades to educate the public about electric vehicles and their benefits.

Eagle Electric motorbikes- Philippines

The new 1500 watt Eagle motorbikes arrived in Puerto Princesa and Manila shops night before last. These are stronger than the 1000 watt units that Green Tech EcoCenter staff have been driving for 3 years now.

Dave first bought several Eagle Ebikes for himself to test when we lived in Subic Freeport. We have been hooked on them since. Dave, being the EV enthusiasts and user, realized the need to also service the units and has made sure that no matter where you buy one, you won't be left with no one to turn to if you need a new part or service. I went around to traditional gas motorcycles shops today and it seems these E bikes are cheaper than some 125cc models.

Having been around them and seeing them used by staff, it seems they are pretty maintenance free. Not having to fill up with gas is a real joy. The quiet, noiseless and zero smoke ride makes it a real pleasure to be on.

It's not as fun in PPC to drive them as it was in the Subic Freeport housing area. But for practical purposes like sending the staff on errands,they are still reliable and cheaper to operate than the gas versions. Hopefully someday, PPC will go all electric and dispense with the gas belching, noisy traditional gas motorcycles and tricycles.
Dave used to take Alysha for rides in a kangaroo type baby harness since she could hold her head up by herself. You can see how happy she is!

Electric Jeepney Philippines by PHUV

The city of Puerto Princesa latest electric vehicle acquisition! The E Jeepney by PHUV (Philippine Utility Vehicle, Inc.) They dropped this off at our Green Tech EcoCenter, the authorized service/maintenance and dispatch center for all the city's EV's.

We tested it last night and it is the smoothest ride of all the EV's in the city's inventory.

The charger is a manageable size.

Mayor Edward Hagedorn has always been a pioneer in environmental issues. These are the latest electric tricycle prototypes in Puerto Princesa, Palawan developed by Dave Dewbre,EVC (Electric Vehicle Consultant).

Green Tech EcoCenter in Puerto Princesa has made them available as their exclusive distributors and they are testing the bodies and motors, while also developing a livelihood project along with to assemble them in Puerto Princesa, Palawan to create more jobs as well as preserve the fresh air in the city.

Zev ELECTRIC MOTORBIKE ADOPTS ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION

Z ELECTRIC Motorbike has incorporated its new “Electronic Transmission” into all of its high power electric motor scooters.

The Electronic Transmission is a special form of electronic controller for the high power ZEV scooters that allows the rider to independently vary both the voltage and the amperage of the current sent to the hub motors at the same time. This allows the rider to obtain the maximum range by keeping the power consumption as low as possible at any given speed or load. The Electronic Transmission allows the rider to “shift” so that just like a mechanical transmission, the rider can shift to a high rpm (high voltage), low torque (low amp) setting for cruising, or a high voltage, high amp setting for high loads and hills or maximum speed. The throttle controls the voltage; the Electronic Transmission shift button controls the amperage setting. Each touch of the button reduces amps by 20 (always leaving 20 at the bottom level). As an example - the 100 amp X 72 volts maximum power controller would have 100, 80, 60, 40, and 20 amp settings.

To make sure that the new controllers would stand the rigors of the high power bikes, the controllers were tested in a hot box where they were ran at full power, full load for 48 hours at 115 degrees F/45 degrees C ambient air without shut down. Given that the actual installation on the bikes allows for air flow over the deep cooling fins, the test was a bit of overkill.

The ZEV line of electric motor scooters are the fastest and the longest range electric scooters in the world at this time – with the help of the energy saving Electronic Transmission. In operation the rider has a shift button next to the throttle. Once the rider reaches the desired speed, he can touch the button to “shift” down the amp flow, reducing torque, until the bike will only pull the speed desired by the rider. Additionally, regenerative braking is built into all ZEV controllers and bikes so that the bike recharges the battery during braking as it switches the motor into generator mode. Regenerative braking is of little help on flat land or where the brake is seldom used. However, in very hilly and curvy terrain it is of great help, extending the range 15% to 18% depending upon the bike/road/load/speeds. With the maximum battery capacity in excess of 5.5 Kwh on some models and the help of the Electronic Transmission, the bikes range in the largest battery capacity has reached 160 Km/100 miles in testing. That same bike can exceed 120 kph / 75 mph.

Electric Tricycles-Catching on in Philppine Cities

The gas powered tricycle is found in every city, and town in the Philippines. It's also one of the largest air polluters. But now the electric tricycle is slowly going to replace them as more cities adopt their use.

In order to clean up the air and noise pollution, more and more cities are looking at the electric Tricycles as a solution.

I for one, am so glad they are doing it. The noxious fumes from these vehicles is cloying! They pollute our collective atmosphere and air we breathe.

It's time for Filipinos to jump on this bandwagon, not just gas tricycle drivers, but delivery services that have short routes, and motorcyclists in general should switch to electric motorbikes. Fossil fuel emmission is contributing to the ill health our planet is experiencing, and so much more in our cities.

In 2008, a news article claimed that 5000 or more people in the Metro Manila area alone die from diseases associated with noxious air pollution!

Dave and I went to Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines to help Mayor Edward Hagedorn evaluate the possibility of converting the existing gas tricycles to electric. Dave retrofitted a new 3000 watt eBike and hooked it up to an old, heavy sidecar to see if it would do the job.

Mayor Ed Hagedorn wanted to know if our 3000 watt Electric motorcycle would pull an existing side car on one of their local gas tricycles sidecars. That same day, Dave and his associate in the electric motorbikes, Willy Dela Cruz, took it to a welder and it was done by 8 AM the following morning.

The Mayor took off on it like it was a Ferrari!! He had no problems with it. This is a test of the Mayor's EV feasability study for Puerto Princesa's existing gas tricycle problem.

Philippine Deputy National Security advisor Luis Chavit Singson, has purchased an extremely eco-friendly 1000 watt electric motor bike.

Former Ilocos Sur Governor and now Deputy National Security Adviser Luis "Chavit" Singson recently went to Subic and became interested in our environment friendly electric motor scooters to use at his home called Baluarte, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

He bought one from Willy Dela Cruz of Eagle Motorcycles through Dave Dewbre. Chavit says he will use the eco-friendly scooter at his home in Baluarte in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. NSA Singson is looking into promoting eco-friendly vehicles to cut down on pollution in the Philippines.

Our household is going green with Dave's purchase of a new alternative energy electric motorbike from Eagle Motorcycles, Philippines.

Dave's first 1000 watt electric motorcycle carried his 6' foot tall frame up the steep hills here in West Kalayaan, in Subic Bay Freeport zone!
It's so eco friendly! No gas emmissions, no noise! He had such a grand time riding up the hill during a full moon and the fragrance of jungle flowers filling the cool night air!

He found out that tire pressure is very important on an electric bike. It can make the difference of approximately 10kph per hour in distance and speed! To get the most out of your batteries, you should charge the e bike after each use.

He is already selling the electric motor bikes, scooters, bicylcles, and ATV's in the U.S. on his motorcycle stereo speaker stores. The speakers are aperfect marriage for these alternative energy vehicles! You can bring your tunes with you. I like that we will be helping people cut down on their carbon footprints! Seems like our planet could use every person doing something to cut down on air and sound pollution.
We took the electric motor bikes to the beach strand at Subic Bay Freeport today to let two of my lady friends, of take them for a spin! They loved them! Plus they looked gorgeous on them too!
