Hey Eco-lovers! It has been a great week. Eco Glamourista recently connected with Kristin Glenn, the founder and designer of a really cool clothing line called Seamly.co which uses surplus fabrics to produce apparel 100% from USA out of Denver, Colorado with the goal to make clothing sustainable without compromising style.

What I find great about Seamly.co designs, is they are not only cool and innovative but also encourages our generation to create, design and reuse materials in a game-changing way that sets the bar for a new era of sustainability. I respect their mission which is to educate all of us not only how to be ethical but also bring awareness to the terrible reality of sweatshops conditions, toxic waterways and even suicide of cotton farmers happening these days; all as a result of the cheap and fast clothing phenomenon.

One of my favorite pieces from this collection is The Versalette, a garment you can wear in 30 ways! According to Kristin: "We Kickstarted our idea, raised over $64,000, got some rad press, and toured around the USA learning about sustainable fashion. In late 2012, we went to visit the incredible team at Portland Garment Factory and redesigned our sustainable-fashion-love-child. We called it "the Versalette 2.0" -- a sleek, sexy take on our original design." Here's a peek at the design process:

Raw Honey Coconut Oil Face Mask

Raw Honey Coconut Oil Face Mask- promises some serious blackhead removal and baby soft skin!

Here is what you are going to need: Virgin Coconut Oil, Raw Honey, Mixing Bowl and Spoon. Mix Virgin Coconut Oil with Raw Honey using a spoon and a mixing bowl (make sure you mix till it is fully incorporated and looks like cloudy honey). Take your fingertips and apply mixture to your face softly because the raw honey may have crystallized and can be kinda rough on your skin if you use too much pressure. Let mixture rest on your face for 15 min and then rinse off gently with lukewarm water – patting face to dry. Simple & easy!

Lemon Scrub Olive Oil Sugar Scrub

Looking for a good facial scrub/exfoliate? Take a lemon, cut it in half. Dip one half in sugar, then scrub your face and lips, sound easy and yummy!

Soothing Cucumber Eye Gel

Get rid of those puffy eyes! Use: 4 oz Aloe vera gel; 1/2 large cucumber, washed, peeled, and cut into cubes. Blend the cucumber with an immersion blender or in a food processor until liquid. Strain the juice of the cucumber through a fine sieve and set aside. Place the aloe vera gel in a small bowl and mix in 2 tbsp cucumber juice. Whisk well until combined and pour into bottle. Shake gently and place in the fridge to chill for 1 hour before using. Shelf life is 3 months (in the refrigerator). Apply under and around the eyes before bed.

Featuring today, fellow graduate from prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology Class of 2010 such as myself is New York Fashion Designer Daniel Silverstein,who recently launched his Spring ’14 collection. The clothes are not only beautiful and edgy but they’re also eco-friendly, which employs his zero fabric waste design technique.

"While a student at FIT, Daniel interned at Carmen Marc Valvo, Daniel Vosovic, Carolina Herrara and Swimwear Anywhere. A semester abroad studying at FIT in Milan deepened his appreciation for conceptual design and quality goods. At FIT, he was introduced to the concept of zero fabric waste design. He saw that by incorporating this philosophy into his collection, he could create fashion forward clothes without wasting fabric; he could challenge the industry paradigm of reckless waste to one of considerate design."

According to Fast Company: " every year, garment factories dump mountains of fabric scraps into landfills because it’s cheaper than recycling. Textile pollution, a dirty secret of the garment industry--which tends to waste 15% to 20% of its material--has been all but unquestioned, or at least unresolved, until only recently."

I love this zero waste movement, it is yet another way to protect our environment. As a big believer of the no waste movement, I also advocate just as much reusing your own clothes, people throw away a ridiculous amount of clothing every year, instead reuse it, if you are the creative type, take out your sewing machine and re-make something cool out of them, give them to people in need, you can even sell them these day and make a few extra bucks! There is always a way to be socially responsible and chic at the same time.

Back in the day when we didn't have hair dryers or curling irons, the women curled their hair using rags and rollers. This method is not only healthy for your hair because you're not using heat, but you're using less energy and using reusable materials to curl your hair. Don't throw your rags away, you can keep them. Wash and dry and reuse them!

For its third season, The GreenShows Eco-Fashion Week will present ten fashion designers committed to environmental and social responsibility, September 12-14 during New York Fashion Week. The GreenShows will take place at Metropolitan Pavilion’s new eco-conscious venue, The Metropolitan Suit, centrally located in the heart of Chelsea at 123 West 18th Street, 2nd Floor.

The GreenShows at Metropolitan Pavilion is the only premiere fashion event exclusively committed to eco-friendly, ethically sound, fair-trade fashion during New York Fashion Week. How Safe are Your Cosmetics?

We’ve all learned about the dangerous ingredients in skin care products. Unfortunately, all the same problems apply to cosmetics.

The FDA does not adequately regulate cosmetics, and in particular does not educate consumers on how unsafe the ingredients used in cosmetics by the cosmetics manufacturers are for human use. Scary isn't it?

Thankfully there are organizations such as Organic Consumers.org and Safe Cosmetics.org who are fight the proliferation of dangerous ingredients in cosmetics.

"Contrary to popular belief, the U.S. government doesn't regulate cosmetics for safety, long-term health impacts or environmental damage. Many common cosmetics ingredients are harmful to people and the environment. Consumers can avoid toxic ingredients by using USDA certified organic cosmetics. The trouble is, while the USDA allows cosmetics to be certified organic, it doesn't require it. That's why, as this new Story of Stuff Project video, The Story of Cosmetics, points out, "On cosmetics labels, words like 'herbal,' 'natural,' even 'organic', have no legal definition. That means that anybody can put anything in a bottle and call it 'natural.' And they do!" The Organic Consumers Association's Coming Clean Campaign has been working to stop this fraud since 2004. "

CONSUMERS TAKE ACTION: Ask the USDA National Organic Program to stop organic cosmetics fraud! Which local stores have Organic Cosmetics Integrity Policies? Ask retailers to adopt Organic Cosmetics Integrity Policies! Boycott fake "organic" brands! Buy USDA certified organic cosmetics!

RETAILERS TAKE ACTION: Are you ready to come clean? Adopt an Organic Cosmetics Integrity Policy.

So please, look at labels carefully and choose cosmetics that are healthy for you and the environment!

Eco-Glam Events at Fashion's Night Out 2010 NYC

Mark your calendars—September 10 is the Second Annual Fashion’s Night Out! This one-day-only event, brought to you through a collaboration between Vogue Magazine and the CFDA, features hundreds of chic retailers, hot DJs, stylin’ celebrities, and wild parties for a super-fashionable extravaganza. Fashion’s Night Out is based in NYC, but is celebrated internationally (click here for a list of participating countries and other US cities!).

For all you New York eco-fashionistas out there, Ecouterre is collaborating with the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn to educate consumers about sustainable shopping and “slow” fashion (a.k.a: it takes longer to make because it’s made responsibly)! Here’s a look at the night’s events:

6pm-7pm: A workshop in consumerism and sustainable fashion, sponsored by geek-chic fashion community Hacking Couture. Led by textile conservator Sarah Scaturro and HC’s Giana Gonzalez. To RSVP, e-mail rsvp@textileartscenter.com with “RSVP HACK” in the subject line and your contact information.

7pm-8:30pm: A discussion panel on sustainable design, moderated by Jill Fehrenbacher, founder of green blogs Ecouterre and Inhabitat. The panel features Sarah Scaturro, Fashion Me Green’s Greta Eagan, Waste Not Want Not’s Laura Sheriff, and eco-designers Margerita Mileva, Titania Inglis, Caroline Priebe, and Shabd Simon-Alexander. 8:30-11pm: The shopping hours! Clothing and accessories from panelists and other eco-designers will be featured, as well as free workshops in tie-dyeing, alterations, and constructing adorable purses from recycled fabric. Free drinks and food will be provided, as well as music by DJ Whistlepunk. No RSVP required.

NYC Event: 2010 Sustainable Planet Film Festival

The Sustainable Planet Film Festival is a two day event that will be held on June 7th and 8th, 2010 in New York City. It’s the second time being held in NYC, previous festivals were held in Belgium and Jordan. The Sustainable Planet ﬁlm festival was launched in 2005 as to celebrate the UNESCO DECADE on Sustainable Education.

Eco celebrity Pamela Peeters the mastermind behind this amazing project, is an environmental economist and certified eco consultant, has produced over 200 television episodes of the lifestyle magazine "Our Planet", various short films and several radio segments. She is also a published writer, lectures internationally and contributes in making sustainable development topics become a part of the mainstream media. She also is the creator of Sustainable Styles Magazine.

DIY Exfoliating Scrubs for a Smoother Summer

Making your own scrub from natural ingredients is a great way to green your beauty routine and uncover that fresh glowing skin underneath naturally.

There are basically two ways you can scrub away dead cells and impurities from your skin, there is the physical defoliator which has the grainy texture and there is the chemical defoliator which naturally comes from fruit acids. What these fruit acids do is dissolve the bonds that hold skin cells together, allowing them to slough off more easily.

So go ahead, buff, scrub, and peel your way to a smoother summer with the season's best remedies that are handmade and good for the environment. These can also make really great gifts because some you can keep for up to six months, so find a nice little jar and make these for your friends!

For The Face:

DIY Oatmeal-Lavender Face Scrub
1 cup ground oatmeal
1/2 cup dry lavender flowers, stripped of stalks
1/2 cup powdered milk (either whole or nonfat)
2 tsp. cornmeal

Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl, massage into damp skin, and rinse with warm water. (Scrub will keep for six months.)

Pineapple Face Scrub
2/3 cup fresh pineapple chunks (room temperature)
1/4 cup cold-pressed olive oil
1/4 cup fresh, clean parsley, chopped

Pulse pineapple in a blender, then add oil until almost smooth. Add parsley, and blend carefully so mask doesn't liquefy. Apply to skin and leave on for 15 minutes, instructs Brenda Brock, recipe creator and founder and CEO of Farmaesthetics.

For the Body:

DIY Spicy Sugar Scrub
3/4 cup sugar
2 tsp. ground cloves
1 Tbsp. dried rose petals
2 tsp. grated orange zest
1 1/2 cups sesame oil

Combine ingredients in a large bowl, making sure that everything is well mixed. Use on damp skin twice a week, Uliano says, scrubbing with your hands or a washcloth in small, circular motions. The mix will last up to six months when stored in a cool, dark cupboard.

DIY Coffee Zest Body Scrub
1/2 cup used coffee grounds
1/2 cup honey
1 Tbsp. fresh orange zest

Mix ingredients together in a container and rub mixture into skin with your hands or a washcloth, using upward strokes, for one to three minutes. Apply up to three times a week.

Tip: Limit exfoliation to once a week until you know how your skin reacts. Then, you can scrub up to three times if your skin isn't showing signs of irritation....and always apply moisturizer after exfoliation for smoother skin.

I love Memorial Day weekend. A day to remember our troops and to spend quality time with your loved ones. Also the extra day off has infinite possibilities: Road trips! Beach parties! BBQs! Pastoral picnics with apple pie!

The holiday, which also marks the beginning of summer, is also a great opportunity to green your summer wardrobe and add pieces that are much more earth-friendly. Living in New York City, I often celebrate Memorial day at a picnic with my family or taking a trip to the Hampton's seaside. Keeping with the all-American feel, I tend to gravitate towards vintagey classics and hits of red and navy (but no flag tees, promise!). Eco-Fashion Exhibition at NYC's Museum at FIT

The Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC presents Eco-Fashion: Going Green, an exhibition exploring the evolution of the fashion industry’s multifaceted and complex relationship with the environment. By examining the past two centuries of fashion’s good—and bad— environmental and ethical practices, Eco-Fashion: Going Green provides historical context for today’s eco-fashion movement.

Going Green exhibit shows that, contrary to popular belief, fashion designers have long been interested in sustainability. The revealing exhibition features over 100 garments, accessories and textiles from the mid-18th century to the present. Defining what qualifies as "eco-fashion" while highlighting how each stage of fashion production has environmental consequences are the two main principles upon which the exhibition is built. The display features beautiful designs by contemporary designers such as Edun, Bodkin and Fin alongside centuries-old creations like a silk brocade gown from 1760.

As a fellow FIT recent graduate and Alum, I know all about this museum and its amazing shows throughout the years. If you are in the NYC area be sure to check out this one-of-it's-kind eco-fashion exhibition!
