Six outstanding global women activists (from Uganda, Nigeria, Cook Islands, Mississippi/US, Philippines, and Brazil) young and old, share their personal narratives to help us understand the cross-cutting impacts of climate change and other environmental issues on their lives. In conversation they’ll also discuss the importance of women’s empowerment and reproductive health, and new, innovative connections among women of all ages for practical implementation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). President Mary Robinson, first woman President of Ireland, (1990–97) and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR; 1997–2002) will be speaking at event.

New York+20: Youth-led action for sustainable development

Organized by Columbia University Coalition for Sustainable Development

Esperanza Garcia, President, Columbia University Coalition for Sustainable Development, applauded the actions by the “real” leaders at the forefront of sustainable development.

Elizabeth Thompson, Rio+20 Executive Coordinator, said it is a wonderful time to be young as the challenges present many opportunities for creating new ways of “acting.”

Amb. Josephine Ojiambo, Permanent Representative of Kenya to the UN, said “those not able to, must be persuaded to, or asked not to hold back” the process of change.

This event presented youth and students with an opportunity to voice their opinions on sustainable development at the UN.

Esperanza Garcia, President, Columbia University Coalition for Sustainable Development, moderating the event, said the youth’s role in the negotiating process leads to better policy formulation and implementation.

Elizabeth Thompson, Rio+20 Executive Coordinator, spoke on the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative, which asks universities to commit to: shrinking their ecological footprint; addressing issues of water waste, energy and transport; greening their physical structures; supporting the development of a body of literature on sustainability and sustainable development; and teaching sustainable development as a core module across disciplines.

Ambassador Josephine Ojiambo, Permanent Representative of Kenya to the UN, commending the activities of the NY+20 initiative, warned of the economic and environmental hazards that disproportionately affect the youth, and encouraged young people to use their energy to “shake off” complacency and old habits of unsustainable living.

Kate Offerdahl, Columbia University, applauded the efforts of New York youth as well as internet participants from across the world in producing their formal statement. Brendan Guy, Yale University, read the formal statement to the UN, highlighting: accountable sovereignty; inclusive representation of youth in international governance; and responsible finance though stringent environmental and social impact assessments.

Céline Ramstein, Sciences Po Environment, told of the major cities who have joined in the youth movement called MyCityPlus 20. She described how the idea was realized through social media and stressed the importance of engaging the youth in generating enthusiasm into the sustainability process.

Ivana Savic, Children and Youth Major Group, outlined the focus of the group’s actions, which is to provide policy inputs and build a movement around sustainable development in the form of proper implementation, focused on youth needs.

Jean-Pierre Thébault, French Ambassador for the Environment, warned of the many difficult subjects that need to be addressed prior to Rio+20, and said that the youth’s “job” only starts at Rio, continuing for the next two to three decades.

If you are planning to attend the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Rio de Janeiro in June, but still need to be officially accredited, Interional Youth Council (IYC) can issue you a letter of accreditation for the UN Conference for Sustainable Development (June 20-22) and related 3rd PrepCom (June 13-15).

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS is this Friday, May 25 at 12:00 AM EST. You will be notified of the status of your application by the end of May 26. If your application is accepted, we will be sending you your letter of accreditation which can be considered as official proof of your participation in the UN summit. This letter also enables you to get a free Brazilian visa.

IYC is *not* responsible for any other arrangements related to your participation in Rio+20 and related events – including, but not limited to travel to/from Rio, transportation in Rio, food, accommodation, insurance and incidentals.

Accredited delegates will be required to attend IYC meetings in Rio and carry out reporting, promotion, and/or other tasks when requested. Accredited delegates will also be required to give credit to IYC in their reporting, communications, and outreach efforts, whenever possible (e.g. linking to IYC if you're writing a blog post, and mentioning that your presence has been supported by our organization). NY+20 seeks to educate young people about the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (also known as Rio+20) this June and issues of sustainable development and providing them with the opportunity to encourage governments to act.

NY+20 will be a one-day event held during the second round of UN Informal-Informals on Friday, April 27, 2012 at the Ford Foundation from 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Brice Lalonde, UNCSD Rio+20 Executive Coordinator will be the keynote speaker at this event.

Through NY+20, we can inspire regional youth to become involved in the UN processes that impact their futures, and allow them to form their own opinions on sustainable development. NY+20's participants will develop their own "Youth Statement" about what they would like to see happen at Rio, and then present this to the global community. We will be presenting our “Youth Statement” at a side event during the second round of UN Informal-Informals the following Monday, April 30 from 6:15-730 PM at the UN headquarters.

U.N. Secretary-General: ‘Youth is a type of idealism’

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told students on Monday that youth have the power to effect change.

Students and faculty filled Low Rotunda on Monday to listen to United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon discuss the importance of young people in effecting positive change around the world.

“Young people are forceful in transformation,” he said. “Today’s younger people have advantages—you have the Internet, you have Twitter—young people are using Facebook and Twitter to organize protests and speak out about human rights and oppression.”
Ban focused on “three E’s”—education, employment, and empowerment—throughout his speech, which resonated with students and faculty members.

“I think that for us in today’s world there is a need to be a global citizen, and for that you must have a global perspective,” said School of Engineering and Applied Science Dean Feniosky Peña-Mora. “We are becoming more and more dependent on each other. The world is getting smaller and smaller. If you want to be successful in the global economy, you have to have the right mindset, experiences, and cross-cultural fluencies.”

Peña-Mora said that he remains dedicated to providing students with international opportunities, with SEAS expanding its study abroad opportunities this year for undergraduates.

“Education is a wise, smart investment,” Ban said. “Young people everywhere deserve the power to get information and ask questions about justice, equality, and opportunity.”

Formally titled “From Youth Explosion to Global Transformation: Unleashing the Power of Young People,” the speech addressed global issues like job creation, LGBT equality, women’s rights, education, and climate change, and how the solutions to those problems may stem from the work of younger generations.

“We need to build resilience and equality with wider vision, and the way to do it is to help the youth,” Ban said. “‘Youth’ is a state of mind, because it implies we can always be young.”

Many students were present for the event, and Esperanza Garcia, a masters student studying sustainability management, took advantage of the question-and-answer session after the speech to ask Ban about global warming and implementing policy changes.

“What I ask of you is to do not only what you are already doing but I’m also asking for world leaders to look into how we can implement these policies in real terms,” Garcia said. “It’s important to put in text how we can develop these important measures and how we will really accomplish them.”

Garcia said that she felt it was important to highlight the issue of global warming, but noted funding issues have prevented significant policy reform.

“As young people, we take responsibilities of implementing these changes, but we need the funds,” she said. “If you want to do something large-scale, you need the financing methods."

Vivian Tsai, BC ’15, said that she appreciated the emphasis on education during the speech, but still wonders how the U.N. will work with countries to foster healthy emotional environments for students.
“I moved from Taiwan to the States five years ago, and there was a lack of empathy in education,” she said. “How does … the U.N. seek to combine the two?”

Tsai said that the empowerment component of Ban’s address was important because “he’s reminding people that even though you’re 18 you should have the capacity to change things.”
Ban began his time at the U.N. in 1975 working in the South Korean Foreign Ministry’s U.N. Division, and 31 years later he was elected Secretary-General.

The talk marked the start of the sixth annual Global Colloquium of University Presidents, with this year’s theme focusing on how to address the needs of the “largest generation of young people the world has ever known.”

University President Lee Bollinger gave the opening remarks, calling Ban an “inspirational leader.” “In these days, with rapid globalization, we have a tremendous responsibility to lend our collective scholarship,” he said.

Just recently, I was somehow dubbed as "President" of Columbia University Coalition for Sustainable Development (CUCSD) (when in reality, I am the slave of the organization... really). We have only been an accredited organization for two weeks, and yet, we have achieved so much already. All our success is due to the hardworking team members who believe in providing Columbia University students with the opportunity to engage in high-level sustainable development related meetings, such as the upcoming UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), in Rio de Janeiro in June. I have been lucky to have the opportunity to work with a brilliant team of incredibly motivated individuals. These past two weeks gives indication of how much our group can achieve in such a short amount time. Check out all the cool things we have been working on!

Ten (10) CUCSD delegates attended the US/Canada Citizen Summit at Yale University from March 24 - 25.

Seventeen (17) CUCSD delegates attended the `informal-informal´ negotiations on the zero draft of the Rio+20 outcome document from 19 to 23 March 2012 and the Third Intersessional Meeting of UNCSD on 26 and 27 March 2012 at UN Headquarters in New York.

SYNOPSIS: The Island President tells the story of President Mohamed Nasheed of the Maldives, a man confronting a problem greater than any other world leader has ever faced--the literal survival of his country and everyone in it. After bringing democracy to the Maldives after thirty years of despotic rule, Nasheed is now faced with an even greater challenge: as one of the most low-lying countries in the world, a rise of three feet in sea level would submerge the 1200 islands of the Maldives enough to make them uninhabitable.

The Island President captures Nasheed's first year of office, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009, where the film provides a rare glimpse of the political horse-trading that goes on at such a top-level global assembly. Nasheed is unusually candid about revealing his strategies--leveraging the Maldives' underdog position as a tiny country, harnessing the power of media, and overcoming deadlocks through an appeal to unity with other developing nations.

When hope fades for a written accord to be signed, Nasheed makes a stirring speech which salvages an agreement. Despite the modest size of his country, Mohamed Nasheed has become one of the leading international voices for urgent action on climate change.

John Shenk, Director of "The Island President," writes in the New York Times:

"The Maldives is considered among the nations most vulnerable to the rising sea levels... It is composed of 1,200 tiny islands in the Indian Ocean... It is likely that the sea will eventually overtake the islands. In 2009, I traveled to the Maldives to pitch Mr. Nasheed on my idea for a documentary film that would cover his dual challenges of despotism and global warming and culminate in Copenhagen in December 2009, where world leaders were to gather for a United Nations meeting about climate change. I realized I was asking for a lot: free rein to film cabinet meetings, intimate family meals and tense bilateral exchanges with world leaders. But Mr. Nasheed thought for only a moment before saying: “Yes. Let’s do it.” Throughout our one and a half years of filming, my team was struck by his candor, tirelessness, humanity and deep commitment to transparency.”

This pic with the Maldivian hero behind me was taken at the 2009 UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. This was captured around 3 a.m. on the last day of the negotiations. I was impressed by President Nasheed's vigor throughout the night. I had left around 7 a.m. to catch a flight, with President Nasheed still continuing to fight for his country...

He was truly a rockstar at this summit. He had given a speech that moved the world of which he had compared the plight of the Maldives to Gandhi’s plight in India.

WBCSD launches new training program on business and ecosystems

Geneva, February 24, 2012– In an increasingly natural resource-constrained world, corporations must measure, manage and mitigate their impact on the ecosystems where they operate and through their supply chains. To help build this capacity into company infrastructure, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) launched its Business Ecosystems Training (BET) program today at an event co-organized with the Geneva Environment Network (GEN) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN).

BET is designed toimprove the understanding of managers and employees across business functions about their company’s direct and indirect impact and dependence on ecosystems and ecosystem services. Designed specifically for business, it incorporates WBCSD methodologies, materials and tools that have been developed over the course of 10 years, as well as material from other institutions. The development of the BET course was supported by member company KPMG and a network of global companies, environmental NGOs, UN and academic institutions and environmental institutions including IUCN.

“Effectively managing ecosystems related risks and opportunities can make companies more competitive, resilient to shocks and agile in a fast-changing world.” said James Griffiths, Managing Director, WBCSDEcosystems. “BET will help equip companies with the skills to fully grasp their ecosystems impacts and dependencies and help build their capacity to respond effectively - anticipating changing expectations from customers, investors and regulators and market opportunities.”

UN urges achieving sustainable energy for all as International Year kicks off

16 January 2012 – As the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All kicked off today, United Nations officials called on governments, the private sector and civil society to help expand energy access, improve efficiency and increase the use of renewables.
Globally, one person in five still lacks access to modern electricity and twice that number – three billion people – rely on wood, coal, charcoal, or animal waste for cooking and heating.

“We are here to build a new energy future… a future that harnesses the power of technology and innovation in the service of people and the planet,” Mr. Ban said inremarks to the opening of the World Future Energy Summit, which is taking place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Sustainable energy for all is within our reach.

“Sustainable energy for all is within our reach,” he told the summit, which also serves as the global launch of 2012 as the International Year.

Mr. Ban stressed that energy is central to everything, from powering economies to achieving the anti-poverty targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), from combating climate change to underpinning global security.
“It is the golden thread that connects economic growth, increased social equity and preserving the environment.”

I'm still not used to being back in an academic setting and it's taken so much of myself in trying to solely focus on school. UN General Assembly has designated 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All

Energy is central to nearly every major challenge, and opportunity the world faces today. Be it jobs, security, climate change, food production or increasing incomes , access to sustainable energy for all is essential for strengthening economies, protecting ecosystems and achieving equity.

In fact, more than 1.4 billion people worldwide have no access to electricity, and 1 billion more only have intermittent access. Some 2.5 billion people – almost half of humanity – rely on traditional biomass for cooking and heating.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made sustainable energy one of his five priorities that will guide his second 5-year term. Specifically, he will direct the United Nations to extend energy’s reach in order to combat endemic poverty. Universal access to energy, improved efficiency and enhanced deployment of renewable sources are ambitious goals, and the Secretary-General is leading a Sustainable Energy for All initiative to make them achievable.

This initiative will call for private sector and national commitments and attract global attention to the importance of energy for development and poverty alleviation. The goal is to meet three objectives by 2030:

• Ensuring universal access to modern energy services.
• Doubling the rate of improvement in energy efficiency.
• Doubling the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

In recognition of the importance of energy access for sustainable economic development and supporting achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations General Assembly has designated 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.

Also, as part of the Sustainable Energy for All Initiative, the United Nations Foundation has launched a new global Energy Access Practitioner Network. This group will bring together practitioners from the private sector and civil society working on the delivery of energy services and solutions related to electrification in a range of developing country contexts to develop a more integrated approach to energy access planning and execution in support of the Sustainable Energy for All Target to achieve universal energy access by 2030. The Network will focus on both household and community level electrification for productive purposes, incorporating specific market-based applications for health, agriculture, education, small business, communities and household solutions.

Ensure universal access to energy

Access to energy transforms lives. Sustainable energy affords new opportunities for the poorest to escape the worst impacts of poverty. It provides people the means to generate income, provide health care services, improve education, and protect the environment. Lack of access to energy hinders development and poses risks to human health and safety. For example, smoke from polluting and inefficient cooking, lighting, and heating devices kills nearly two million people prematurely every year, primarily women and children, and causes a range of chronic illnesses (for more information visit: www.cleancookstoves.org).

Reduce global energy intensity

Efficient and renewable sources of energy are often the best and most cost-effective option for providing access to energy. The use of energy-efficient products reduces the amount of energy that must be supplied for lighting and other needs. Similarly, more efficient distribution and use of energy could free up power that is now lost or wasted, as well as capital to invest in additional energy supply or economic development.

Increase renewable energy use

Energy sources such as wind and solar can provide energy without negative impacts to the environment, reach remote rural areas particularly via distributed generation and the use of mini-grids, and generate employment. At present, renewable energy sources provide 19 per cent of global energy consumption. If supported by strong enabling policies, renewable energy could supply more than three quarters of the world's energy by 2050. Small-scale renewable technologies could reach a large number of people currently without access to energy.

Leading up to the 4^th UNAOC Forum in Doha in December

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), the International Youth Council (IYC) and the Friendship Ambassadors Foundation (FAF) have partnered up to hold an online youth consultation regarding the three themes of the upcoming UNAOC’s 4th Annual Forum to be held in Doha, Qatar this December.

This 4th UNAOC Forum in Qatar will bring together over 2,000 participants, including political and corporate leaders, civil society activists, youth groups, faith communities, research centers, foundations and journalists, will come together to agree on joint actions to improve relations across cultures, combat prejudice and build lasting peace.

The three themes of this 4th UNAOC Forum are:

• Theme 1: How Does Cultural Diversity Matter to Development? The missing link

• Theme 2: Promoting Trust and Tolerance to Advance Development Goals

• Theme 3: New Strategies for Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding & Cooperation

We are inviting youth partners from all around the world to share their viewpoints on these 3 themes from November 10 to November 30, 2011, on the “Community” section of the UNAOC Youth Website. Please note that you need to register on the UNAOC Youth Website before posting any comment.

For each of these three themes, a panel of youth leaders and academics developed three specific sub-questions. The goal for the consultation regarding these nine questions is to yield concrete, focused and pertinent recommendations for the Youth Event at the Doha Forum. For each question, you can count on the support of two youth co-moderators chosen through a selective application process. These youth co-moderators will be easily identifiable on the UNAOC Youth Website.

The most helpful and poignant viewpoints from this consultation process will be shared with the youth participants who will then interact directly with world leaders at the Doha Forum.

We want to work with you to ensure the voices and viewpoints of youth partners around the world be noted and heard at the Doha Forum! We look forward to hearing from you before November 30 on the Community section of the UNAOC Youth Website atwww.unaocyouth.org/community!
