Employing the developed model, a comparative analysis has been performed between microfinance-driven government (GO) and NGO (non-government organization) projects to explore their relative effectiveness in enhancing wellbeing of the poor in rural Bangladesh. It is observed that GO agencies are more effective in enhancing ‘economic wellbeing’ of the poor, whereas NGOs are contributing more in the ‘social’ aspects of wellbeing. Findings also revealed that, as whole, GO agencies perform 42% better than NGOs in improving living standards of the rural poor which contradicts with the existing literature of poverty reduction projects in developing countries.

Economics and Finance News

The value of medical and pharmaceutical interventions for reducing obesity

Published in Journal of Health Economics, this paper attempts to quantify the social, private, and public-finance values of reducing obesity through pharmaceutical and medical interventions.

Economics and Finance News

Special Issue - Transitional Economies

This special issue from Journal of Asian Economics covers a wide range of topics including foreign investment and bribery, The China-North Korea cross-border exchange, social protection programmes, and the promotion of entrepreneurship after the collapse of a socialist economic system, amongst others.

Economics and Finance News

Call for Papers: The Dynamics of International Migration

In 2013, Elsevier’s International Review of Economics & Finance will feature a special issue on The Dynamics of International Migration.
