I know as you read the title you are asking yourself " how can anyone be so crazy to set themselves on fire"?

This is not fun or funny! This is deadly!

Not only are these kids setting themselves on fire, they are using rubbing alcohol as an accelerant and video taping each other to prove they did the #firechallenge.

This young man actually posted a video after this one showing his burns, and telling others Not to do it......ya think?

I just want to scream right now!

The 2 young ladies in the photo above are being video taped while doing the #passoutchallenge , notice the contorted body of the girl on the ground. Most likely caused by a lack of oxygen to her brain, seizure and probable brain cell death occurring. Nobody offers to help her up or make sure she does not injure herself while flopping around on the ground?? How crazy!

I received my MFA in Creative Writing at Full Sail University and writing is all I want to do. It doesn't matter the medium; journalism, screenwriting, novels, etc. As a writer, I am trying to climb up the ladder like all writers who want to make it. Of course, that entails doing internships.

Recently, I took an internship with Vast Entertainment Productions. The CEO, Lane Shefter Bishop, was willing to give me a chance when others would not. When I took this internship, I didn’t know what to expect from it. I was excited, eager to learn more about the writing world and film, and ready to get to work. The experience has been great, but I didn’t expect to be this much invested in one project alone. I had not heard about a deadly game being played by teenagers throughout the world until I was assigned to work on The Choking Game Film project.

The Choking Game Film is based on the book titled, “Choke” written by Diana Lopez. It’s considered a game, not just any game, but a dangerous game, one that can kill. The game is also known as Pass out”, “Tap out” or “The Choking Game.” A game played where children most ages from 9-16 choke themselves or each other in order to get high. Air doesn’t circulate to the brain which causes the child to get high or, worse, stop breathing all together. At the internship, I was given the role of Social Media Intern.

My job is to promote the film, which airs on Lifetime July 26, 2014 at 8PM PT/ET. In order to do this I have been promoting via social media. When I made the Facebook’s Fan Page for the film, that’s when my life changed. Parents, friends, and family members started to reach out about their kids and loved ones dying from the choking game. They shared pictures, inboxed me their stories, and uplifted each other. The experience was overwhelming. I love how the community is reaching out and supporting each other. I don’t understand what these parents are going through, have gone through or will go through, but I want to make parents aware of this deadly game. This essay is my contribution to bringing awareness to the parents that are unfamiliar with this horrible game. To the kids that may be reading this essay, if you have or have not played the game; please let your friends know about the danger that is involved. It is not a game.

This experience thus far has taught me to love, not worry about things that are out of my control, and live life to the fullest. This experience has given me a new outlook on life. After my internship is finished it doesn’t matter if I am offered employment or not, I am grateful to be able to bring joy and awareness into so many people’s lives with the film that will be on Lifetime. It gives the families hope and spreads word so that this will not happen to any more children. United we stand and divided we fall.

To the families, friends and loved ones that has lost a child to this game, I pray for you and hope that you will find peace. I close with Lisa Johnson and Britney Krueger’s story. Hopefully it will help all of you to gain further perspective on the seriousness of this issue and call you to action for prevention.

My son’s name is Tristan Alexander Farnsworth. He was born on 6/2/99, 6lbs. 2 oz. He was such a sweet baby. Very easy going and slept through the night from the very first night. He was always very curious about everything. Wanting to know how everything worked. He was so smart. When he was in 8th grade the teachers said he was on a college reading level. I was always so very proud of how smart he was. He had such a good sense of humor and was so sweet to everyone he knew. All his friends would tell me how if they were having a bad day he would do everything he could to make them laugh. One of his closest friends told me that she was on the verge of committing suicide and he talked her out of it and she felt that he saved her life. Tristan was such a good big brother and he loved his sister so very much!! We have a huge hole in our lives without him in it. There is not a day that goes by that I do not think or have a mental movie in my mind of finding him that day. There are more moments happening more frequently that I think about all the times and moments I had with him. Those times are finally starting to outweigh the dark ones. I miss him so much!! I lost my handsome son Tyler Griffin on Feb 6th 2009 to this game. My son was only 12 yrs. old when he passed. Ty had so many dreams even at 12. So many of his friends looked up to him. Still till this day I hear such beautiful stories. Ty touched so many people hearts! He loved playing football they nicknamed him Blaze due to him blazing right thru the line :) Ty also loved fishing any chance he got he wanted to go also loved to cook. His smile would make you smile. Ty was an all-around wonderful, great, amazing child. Ty is missed so dearly. Every year we go to the cemetery to celebrate his birthday. We release balloons and sing Happy Birthday at 5 pm sharp the time Ty was born and have cupcakes and talk and remember our Sweet Angel. ~Lisa Johnson

Self Harm and Self Injury Series: 10 Ways People Self-Harm, Self Injure Themselves

Top Ten Ways to Self-Harm, Self-Injure (from TheHealthPlace.org)

A study published in 2006, Self-injurious Behaviors in a College Population, by Whitlock et al., looked at the self-injurious behavior of over 2800 college students. Seventeen percent of the respondents reported self-injurious behavior. According to that study, the ten most common ways to self-harm were:¹

Scratching or pinching – this behavior included severely scratching or pinching with fingernails or objects to the point that bleeding occurred or marks remained on the skin. This method of self-injury was seen in more than half of all students who reported participating in self-harm. (Watch interview on Dermatillomania: The Secret of Compulsive Skin Picking)
Impact with objects – this self-harm behavior included banging or punching objects to the point of bruising or bleeding. This way to self-harm was seen in just over 37% of the self-harming students.
Cutting – while cutting is often considered synonymous with self-harm, this way of self-mutilation only occurred in just over 1-in-3 students who reported self-harming. Cutting is more common among females.
Impact with oneself – this self-injury method includes banging or punching oneself to the point of bruising or bleeding. This way to self-injure was seen in almost 25% of the students who reported self-harming behaviors.
Ripped skin – this way of self-mutilation includes ripping or tearing skin. This type of self-injury was seen in just under 16% of those who admitted to self-harming behaviors.
Carving – this way of self-harm is when a person carves words or symbols into the skin. This is separate from cutting. This method of self-mutilation was identified by just under 15% of those who self-harm.
Interfering with healing – this way of self-mutilation is often in combination with other types of self-harm. In this case, a person purposefully hampers the healing of wounds. This method of self-harm was used by 13.5% of respondents.
Burning – burning skin is a way of self-mutilation. Burning as a way of self-injury was seen in 12.9% of students who self-harmed.
Rubbing objects into the skin – this type of self-harm involves the rubbing of sharp objects, such as glass, into the skin. Twelve percent of responding students used this way to self-harm.
Hair-pulling – this way to self-harm is medically known as trichotillomania. In trichotillomania, a person feels compelled to pull out their own hair and in some cases even ingest that hair. This type to self-injury was seen in 11% of students who self-harmed.

One thing to note, 70% of those who repeatedly self-harm use multiple ways to self-harm with the majority reporting between 2-4 self-injury methods used.

Self Injury and Self Harm, why?? many parents and friends to tweens and teens are asking this same question. You are very worried about your loved one when you find out that they are cutting themselves or maybe burning themselves, you worry and start to think what on earth could be wrong.

As a parent of teens and a survivor myself of self harm behaviors when I was a teen, I wanted to dig a bit deeper into the what's and why's of self mutilation and self harming. Today there are resources available all over the web to educate yourself and learn how to help others. If you are a parent, get involved and communicate with your kids, the worst thing you can do is shun them and scream at them more. They need your love, not your lectures. They are not usually seeking attention like you are thinking, nor usually suicidal, but can become addicted to self harming because they feel the painful emotions released when self harming and want that feeling more and more. Some self harmers can cut deep enough to require treatment, stitches, hospitalization and even to the point of a suicidal attempt.

There's no one single or simple cause that leads someone to self-injure. In general, self-injury is usually the result of an inability to cope in healthy ways with psychological pain related to issues of personal identity and having difficulty "finding one's place" in family and society. The person has a hard time regulating, expressing or understanding emotions. The mix of emotions that triggers self-injury is complex. For instance, there may be feelings of worthlessness, loneliness, panic, anger, guilt, rejection, self-hatred or confused sexuality.

Through self-injury, the person may be trying to:
Manage or reduce severe distress or anxiety and provide a sense of relief
Provide a distraction from painful emotions through physical pain
Feel a sense of control over his or her body, feelings or life situations
Feel something, anything, even if it's physical pain, when feeling emotionally empty
Express internal feelings in an external way
Communicate depression or distressful feelings to the outside world
Be punished for perceived faults

The most common forms of self-harm include:
Cutting/Self-Mutilation
Burning
Poisoning
Overdosing
Carving the skin
Hitting
Breaking bones
Head banging
Pinching
Biting
Pulling out hair
Preventing wound healing
Piercing the skin with sharp objects
Risky behaviors

Many people who harm themselves cover it with clothing or make up, but in most cases, there are certain signs that indicate a possible self-injury disorder.

Some symptoms include:
Scars that do not go away or new ones all the time
Broken bones
Hair loss or bald spots
Isolation
Carrying a sharp object at all times
Covering up with clothing regardless of the weather or temperature
Bruises
Fresh cuts, scratches, or other wounds

Self-harm can be impulsive at times, although self-injury behaviors are also commonly planned, in a ritualistic practice, which happens repeatedly. It is the methodical aspect of self-harm that becomes a habit in some people — it provides comfort in the fact that it is a reliable, controllable sensation in what may feel an otherwise uncontrollable world.

In America, nearly 1.7 million children live in a home with a loaded, unlocked gun,
and a staggering 33 percent of homes with children have a gun.
Every year, thousands of children are killed or seriously injured as a result.
As parents, we can protect those we love by arming ourselves with knowledge and
educating ourselves about very real health and safety issues that fuel unnecessary tragedy.
One way of arming ourselves with knowledge is by making sure to ASK if there are
guns where our children play. If the answer is no, then we have one less thing to worry about.
If it’s yes, then we need to ensure that the guns are stored, locked, and kept
separate from ammunition.
On Friday, June 21, 2013, organizations and individuals around the country will
celebrate National ASK (Asking Saves Kids) Day.
Held annually on the first day of summer, a season when children spend more
time in other homes, ASK Day reminds parents about the importance of asking
if there are guns in the homes where their children play.

Another resource for parents is the “Arm Yourself with Knowledge” Facebook Page,
which offers simple, empowering solutions to prevent youth violence by making
your home, family and community safer.

• 1 in 4 kids and teens whose parents own guns say they have seen or touched a gun

• Almost 90 percent of accidental shootings involving children are linked to an
easy-to-find, loaded handgun in the house (Society of Pediatric Nurses, 1998).

• Eighty-eight percent of the children who are injured or killed in unintentional shootings
are shot in their own homes or in the homes of relatives or friends (Pediatrics 2005).

• 42% of parents with guns keep at least one unlocked; 25% keep at least one loaded,
and 14% keep one unlocked AND loaded (Global Strategy Group Parent Study
commissioned by CPYV, 2011).

• Over 75% of kids in homes with guns say they know where the gun is hidden
(Benenson Strategy Group Study commissioned by PAX, July 2002).

• Less than 50% of parents reported being concerned about guns in other homes,
but 79% would be concerned if they knew there was a gun in the home their child
was visiting (GSG Parent Study).
• Only 23% of parents said they had asked in the past, but by the end of the survey,
89% said ASKing was important (GSG Parent Study).
• 97% of parents who owned a gun said that they would not be offended if another
parent asked about a gun in their home (GSG Parent Study).

Join the Blog World on December 18th for a day of Silence and Support for Sandy Hook and the senseless tragedy that happened that day. How can we ever understand why? My heart absolutely hurts tonight so much thinking about those dead children and the adults that died with them.
I look at my Christmas tree and weep thinking of the parents and loved ones that have been so heartbroken here right before the holidays. Having so much medical knowledge in my head does not help me deal with this any better, as an ER nurse I can envision the trauma that those poor babies endured and how they may have passed from this earth to a heavenly plan. I pray that my daddy met them with open arms at the gates of glory and led them to the foot of Jesus and told them that they were safe now.

Friday, tragedy struck so many of us in ways we did not foresee. An elementary school and small town in Connecticut was shattered by a mass shooting. We knew we wanted to help and we came up with this:

British police say children out trick-or-treating on Halloween got more than they bargained for when they were given bags of cocaine instead of sweets.

A 23-year-old man has been charged with possession of class A drugs after the children's parents found the resealable plastic bags on Wednesday night and took them to the police in Royton, just outside Manchester.

"Snap bags containing white powder were taken to the police and examined," police said.

"It was confirmed that the bags contained cocaine.

"The bags had been given to children on Mendip Close, Royton, who were out trick-or-treating."

A 21-year-old woman was also arrested but was later released without charge.

"The parents and police acted quickly when this report was made, in the interests of public safety," police superintendent Catherine Hankinson of Greater Manchester Police said.

"We understand this to be an isolated incident."

Debbie LaRocque started this string of beads in 2006 with the 1st bead being her child's. Each bead represents a child that we know has died from the choking game since then. This string of beads is now over 20 ft long with over 600 beads and these are only the ones that are self-reported.

Raising Awareness of Bullying Behavior!

WKBT anchor Jennifer Livingston took a moment during Tuesday's morning newscast (Oct. 2, 2012) to directly address a recent email she received from a viewer complaining about her weight.

"To the person who wrote me that letter — do you think I don't know that? That your cruel words are pointing out something that I don't see?" Livingston asked in response. "You don't know me. You are not a friend of mine. You are not a part of my family. And you have admitted that you don't watch this show. So you know nothing about me but what you see on the outside. And I am much more than a number on the scale."
Livingston went on to say that October is National Bullying Month, and that she hopes her response to the email will serve to raise awareness of bullying behavior, which is "passed down from people like the man who wrote me that email." "If you are at home and talking about the fat news lady, guess what? Your children are probably going to go to school and call someone fat," Livingston said. Livingston thanked friends, family and colleagues, saying, "I will never be able to thank you enough for your words of support, and for taking a stand against this bully. We are better than that email. We are better than the bullies that will try to take us down."

Bullying Behaviors should not be tolerated by adults or kids, we are so much better that any bully. A Bully has some serious issues themselves that need to be dealt with, some are seeking attention, some have been bullied or assaulted by parents or older siblings themselves, some are trying to impress their peers or have serious psychological problems.

Each year millions of children and youth experience the humiliation and devastating effects of bullying. Bullying damages the physical, social, and emotional well-being of its victims. It also hurts the children who bully, as well as those who watch it happen. In fact, bullying creates a climate of fear, callousness, and disrespect for everyone involved.

One day, a man was walking along the beach, enjoying the morning sun and cool breeze from the ocean.

Suddenly, far off in the distance, he saw what looked like someone dancing. But as he drew closer, the man noticed that it was a little girl picking up starfish from the shore and tossing them back into the ocean.

As he approached the girl, he paused for a moment, kind of puzzled, then asked, "Young lady - why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?"

And she replied…"Well, the sun is up, and the tide is going out. If I leave these starfish on the beach, the sun will dry them up and they will die."

And the man said “But there are thousands of starfish washed up all along this beach for miles! You can’t possibly make a difference!"

The young girl thought for a moment, then slowly leaned over, and carefully picked up another starfish from the sand. And with the starfish in hand, she turned to the man and gently said "You may be right, but it’ll make a difference to this one!"

And with that, she reached back and threw the starfish as far as she could back into the ocean.

Tonight I searched my favorite website Pinterest for pins about "The Choking Game" thinking that Pinterest was just for cute crafty home kind of stuff, and I was totally wrong. I did find many pins that mentioned TCG so I created a board dedicated to safety and our children. You can find my Pinterest tab to the right on the sidebar. If you are on Pinterest search #Chokinggame #kidssafety for other interesting pins to add to your own boards. Pinterest is a great way to connect your educational efforts also with others and spread the word and cause to help stop the choking game, especially if you link your Pinterest with Twitter and Facebook!

Today we would like to reflect on the senseless slaying of those Angels in Aurora Colorado that did not
deserve to die at the hands of a madman. So many things happen that we will never understand, but God is always on his throne.

May God bless and comfort those who lost loved ones on that day.

The Game That Could Win Your Life.
November 21^st 2011, this day was my little sisters 7^th birthday and the day that has forever changed my life. My family had a small birthday party planned for my sister at my grandparents. The basketball games I was at coaching my cheerleaders went into overtime, so I didn’t get done until about 9:15 that night. I hurried to my grandparents to have cake and ice cream with them, but by the time I got there, they were getting ready to leave. I said hi and bye to all my siblings, then headed back to campus.
I no more than got in the parking lot and my mom called me screaming so loud that I couldn’t understand anything she was saying. I then got her to talk slower and she said the most heart breaking words I have ever heard, “Joshua is dead!” I dropped my phone and burst into tears, I couldn’t breathe, and I instantly turned back around and sped home. I got about a half mile out of town and got pulled over for speeding. I was a wreck. I told the cop what was going on and he didn’t believe me, so he had to call dispatch to see that I was telling the truth.
By the time I got close to my house I could see a light show from all the cop cars that were surrounding my parent’s home. I couldn’t get into my driveway so I drove through my neighbor’s yard to get to my parents. The look on my dad’s face, made me know this was real. My mom was crying, talking like she was talking to herself, but out loud. She said, “His eyes were lifeless and glazed, his skin was blue, all I wanted to do was hold him but they wouldn’t let me.” I tried talking to her but all she could say was, “They told me to prepare for the worst, but I know he’s already gone.”
The drive to the hospital was the longest drive of my life. Once we got there they wouldn’t let me in his room. So many EMT’s and ME’s were in the room working on him. I just wanted to go in there with him. Once they let me in, I held his hand, kissed his cheek, tried closing his eyes and talking to him. I knew he was gone, but my mind wouldn’t let me accept it.
We were fielding questions, going through all of his things, and trying to find peace of knowing what really happened and started the funeral planning process. I took on the “big sister” role, and helped plan his visitation and funeral. I never thought I would be able to do this, but I did and it was the most rewarding thing I have ever done. I did it because I knew my parents needed the help. There were so many people there; it was completely amazing to see all the love and support we got from everyone.
Joshua was 13 years old, a 7^th grader who was on the A honor roll, loved football, wrestling, drawing, singing, outdoors, 4-H and everything else a little boy loves. He had the biggest heart and a contagious smile that could light up a room. A few days after he died we found out the cause of his death, it was from “the choking game”. This is something that none of our family knew he was doing, but when we were told about it and what it entails, we found that the warning signs were all over. They included things like; headaches, itchy eyes, off sleep patterns, marks on his bunk bed, robe ties in his room, and the fact that he was a 13 year old adventurous boy.
Since this happened I have been so invested in the “choking game”. I have found that it is more common than people think. It isn’t something that people really admit to or talk about, but it is going on everywhere, probably even in your neighborhood. When someone participates in this, they are cutting the oxygen supply from their brain, for a short term high, which as a result kills brain cells and can be fatal. This isn’t a game and if people are doing it, I hope that this is a wakeup call to them to stop. The affects of this not only hurts yourself, but also everyone that loves and cares about you.

Twilight is a movie~ not real life people!

As promised I will attempt to dig deeper into those 10 teen health dangers and try to understand them better.
I was hoping that number 1 would not be so true, but I was wrong, kids are biting and sucking each others blood. Good grief what a crazy phase, kids are actually biting and sucking the blood from another person. What are they thinking, infections, serious injuries, hepatitis, Hiv, death are the possible consequences of such a stupid game.

Inspired by the "Twilight" series and heartthrob vampire Edward Cullen's chilly charms, teens are taking their love nips a little too far, MSNBC reports, biting each other -- hard -- and then licking the blood.

Bizarre teen behavior has horrified parents for generations, but health officials and other experts are warning this vampire-inspired Count Dracula fad could have serious consequences.

"These are kids who think they are real vampires," Dr. Orly Avitzur, the medical advisor to Consumers Union, the agency that publishes Consumer Reports magazine, tells MSNBC.

And many teens are getting their blood-sucking fix on the Internet, Avitzur says, noting that sessions spent trolling vampire-related teen websites are on the rise. Groups such as "I drink blood," a category at experienceproject.com, and "I want to be a vampire" at the site 43things.com, are filled with apparent posts from young people with a yearning for hemoglobin.

"Having that thick, warm copper-tasting blood in my mouth is the best thing I can think of!" writes a teenager identified as "GothicGirl10" on MSNBC. "Sometimes my boyfriend lets me feed off him. I let him feed off me as well."

Such talk alarms medical experts, who warn about the dangers of blood-borne diseases such as hepatitis and HIV, as well as the risk of nasty infections. Typically, 10-15 percent of human bite wounds become infected, MSNBC reports.

"If you break the skin, your mouth is pretty dirty," Dr. Thomas Abshire, a pediatric blood and cancer specialist and spokesman for the American Academy of Pediatrics, tells MSNBC. "The human mouth flora is dirtier than a dog or cat's."

Also concerning is the fact that this biting is often done to brand another person, experts say.

"If you think about it, there is such glamorization in those teen vampire movies, they make it seem so sexy and appealing and intriguing," Avitzur says. "It's all mixed up with passion."
