Eric Schmidt of Google encapsulated the big data era by illustrating the speed at which information is gathered today — there were five exabytes of information created between the dawn of civilisation through 2003, but that much information is now created every two days.

Data management and analysis has become the new literacy and the cornerstone of business operations, political campaigns, and social causes today. Amidst the growing importance of data, the 7th ASA DataFest at UCLA organised by UCLA students carries with it an educational mission to instill in participants an appreciation for a data-driven problem solving approach. In fact, data is never just about numbers; it represents puzzle pieces that together tell the stories of individuals, firms, and societies. As such, we want this year’s DataFest participants to unleash their curiosity and creativity and craft compelling narratives from their datasets.

For three days, from May 5-7, 2017 , students, working in teams of four to five members, will delve into a massive amount of data and seek meaning out of it. They will have to work well in a group and make use of each other’s strengths. For example, a computer science student could contribute coding skills while a humanities student could play a more active role in stringing the data together to form cogent arguments. Students will also have the opportunity to receive professional advice from a panel of judges, including engineers, computer scientists, statisticians, and social scientists, who will be on the ground constantly to offer help.

This year, as we started planning for the 7th ASA DataFest, we asked ourselves: What else can we do to better support our participants? It’s a new challenge every year for the organising team as we are confronted with fresh problems and the desire to improve ourselves.

We decided that we want to create a much more seamless process, offering more guidance ranging from team formation, coding workshops, to career development. We realised that some of our past participants had difficulty meeting like-minded people and forming teams. Hence this year, we decided to hold a social mixer together with a workshop on programming language, R, to facilitate team formation. Interested students could learn coding while mingling, discovering others with whom they work well. At the same time, we want to regain our focus on students’ career development. So, we are organising a career fair where our sponsors, including PwC and Tableau, will set up booths for students to learn more about them. Recruiters may also come down to spot budding talent!

Tomorrow is another day, and for procrastinators that means another day to avoid doing stuff. We tend to think procrastination has risen along with new technologies to aid in distracting us. But the reality is people have been putting off doing stuff for a loooooong time. See the most notorious time wasters & procrastinators throughout history:

Mozart

If you ever feel bad at procrastinating, remember this story. Mozart wrote the overture for his famous opera Don Giovanni the night before it premiered while he may have been hungover. During the premiere of the opera, the ink on the music sheet had still not dried and it was preformed without any rehearsal. While Mozart may be able to pull off this close call, trying to create a masterpiece in 3 hours is not recommended.

Frank Lloyd Wright

The iconic American architect designed his most famous house at the age of 67— in only two hours. A Pittsburgh department store owner named Edgar Kaufmann Sr. hired Wright to design a property for him in Pennsylvania. Wright visited the land and promised Kaufmann that his design and house would be amazing. But here’s the thing, Wright never started working on a damn thing. He never picked up even a piece of scratch paper, he totally put off working on the project all together. Then a year later, Kaufmann phoned Wright to say he was nearby and would do a casual drop-by to see the progress of Wright’s design. Wright understandably freaked out and drew plans for what would become Fallingwater, a modern design icon and a National
Historic Landmark in just TWO HOURS. Respect.

Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama was not always the spiritual world leader we know today. Before becoming the Dalai Lama, he was just a bored student who struggled to find his motivation. He had a hard time focusing on his schoolwork and meeting deadlines. Now he teaches about the perils of procrastination saying – “You must not procrastinate. Rather you should make preparations so that even if you die tonight, you would have no regrets.” So basically YOLO.

Leonardo Da Vinci

Throughout his life, Leonardo Da Vinci created some of the world’s most famous pieces of art. But despite his accomplishments, he wasn’t particularly focused. He only completed 20 total paintings in his lifetime, because much like modern students he got distracted doodling. His most famous work The Mona Lisa took him 16 years to finish, and the even bigger piece the Virgin of the Rocks took 13 years. Da Vinci’s procrastination was so famous that one benefactor threatened to bankrupt him in order to get him to finish a commissioned piece of work. Today, many of Da Vinci’s famous works are technically unfinished.

Victor Hugo

Hugo’s most famous work, The Hunchback of Notre
Dame was completed under a looming deadline magnified by procrastination. But Hugo had his own unique procrastination technique – to complete the work against the brutal deadline he was facing, he got naked. No really, his method for writing was to strip and lock himself in a room to avoid the temptation of going outside. Only upon completing his work for the day would the servants be allowed to return his clothes to him. So next time you’re up at 2am trying to finish that paper – perhaps attempt the Victor Hugo method of writing? A guaranteed way to make your roommates hate you.

Bill Clinton

Despite being the leader of the free world, former President Bill Clinton struggled with deadlines. His procrastination was so bad that aides reportedly gave the President weeks or month long deadlines for speeches in hopes of getting stuff done on time. Despite the aides best efforts, Clinton still finished things at the very last minute. In fact his procrastination was so bad that in 1994 Time magazine published an article calling him out and describing him as a “chronic procrastinator.” To make matters worse, Clinton’s Vice President Al Gore chimed in supporting Time’s assessment that Clinton was “punctually challenged.” So much for loyalty.

It’s National Grammar Day! Most people have a love/hate relationship with grammar. Sometimes, you love the allure of the semicolon; man, the way it breaks up sentence structure really gives you a high (that was so meta). Wooh!

Other times, that pesky comma can make writing essays literal hell. However you feel, we should take a day to celebrate this wondrous occasion by visiting some of grammar’s weirdest moments.

1. Oranges are good for you

Okay, punks. It’s time to stop with the whole orange doesn’t rhyme with anything drama. Because it’s wrong! Flat wrong. You heard me. In the entirety of the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary (the mother of all dictionaries), there’s exactly one full rhyme: sporange. A sporange is a repository for spores in ferns and other simple plants. Dictionary.com, however, notes that there’s some hill in Wales called Blorenge, which also rhymes with orange.

//giphy.com/embed/4mdj4h7bMr9fO

2. Puke worthy

It’s time to get it all out in the open: the difference between nauseated and nauseous. This is a problem that has plagued centuries past, myself included. According to Grammarly, nauseate (nauseated) is used to describe that horrible feeling you get. You feel nauseated when mom tells you that your spending the summer at Aunt Wanda’s. But, Aunt Wanda herself is nauseous. You just can’t stand Aunt Wanda’s nauseous collection of bobbleheads. Shakespeare also made the word puking. We’ve come full circle here.

3. Hung up on grammar

In certain instances, hanged and hung are both technically correct as past tenses of the word hang. But it depends on how you use it. Hung is used in most places. Like, you hung out with your friends, you hung your sock in the sun out to dry after a sudden storm, or you hung your head in utter disappointment and sorrow when Chipotle closed early. These are all right! But hanged is only used when it’s referring to, uhm, the more dangerous sense of the word.

4. Just make it up

Still confused? Honestly, just make up a dang word. In fact, Shakespeare himself did that all the time. What a rascal. Apparently, he’s responsible for creating more than 1700 words in the English language, like swagger, jaded, and zany.

//giphy.com/embed/3rgXBuIZtYTDnd97Fe

5. I’m all right

Do you say you’re alright – or all right? Are you even alright/all right at all?? (That’s a topic for a different time). For all you casual hipsters, the word is alright. It’s not *technically* correct. Dictionary.com says alright is acceptable in informal instances and all right is for the formal occasions. Spray painting a note on a friend’s car? Tattooing a quote across your forehead? Sending a letter to a pal via carrier pigeon? Use the casual alright! But if you’re writing a peace treaty or publishing a paper on the history of sporange? Stick with all right.

6. Plural form

Singular: cul-de-sac. Plural: culs-de-sac. That’s right my fellow grammarians, I added an s to that snazzy word. I just smacked an s on the end of cul and BAM! It’s plural. Don’t believe me? Here.

7. Abbreviations everywhere

Ever heard of an initialism? Yeah you have! You use them all the time, but most people confuse initialisms with acronyms. Oxford Dictionary’s Blog has something to say about it. An initialism is when you pronounce individual letters of an abbreviation, like CNN, CEO, or ILP (I like pancakes). Whereas, an acronym is when the abbreviation is pronounced as if it were a word of its own, like IHOP or SCUBA.

//giphy.com/embed/e72yNgdm546Os
