A "Trusted Source" Once Again Promises A Spider-Man Cameo In THE AVENGERS

It seems that the recent rumors started by Jenny Agutter recently has resulted in a surge of reports that Spidey will cameo in The Avengers, with the latest claiming to be from a "trusted source".

BestMoviesEverNews.com have run a story claiming that their "trusted sources" have revealed that Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker/Spider-Man WILL make some sort of cameo appearence in Marvel's The Avengers. Personally, I find it hard to believe any report that spells 'Spider-Man' as 'Spiderman' in their headline, while the site seemingly has no prior track record of scoops such as this one. As usual, take the following with a ~~pinch~~whole fistful of salt...

"This will be similar to how Wolverine made a quick cameo in X-Men: First Class and Sony’s going to make sure to promote their new Spider-man movie any way they can. Andrew’s (Garfield) isn’t a widely known actor so they want to get his face on everything, including The Avengers even if it’s for a couple seconds."

Convinced? No, me neither! However, until this is either confirmed or debunked by an official source, who knows?! While it does seem ludicrous, it's worth noting that these rumors have been around for a long time before Agutter even dropped the webslingers name in a recent interview. The timing of this one does seem more than a little dubious though. Sound off with your thoughts in the usual place.

On Which Aspect Of Peter Parker's Personality He Most Identified With:

I have tried to explore Peter Parker as an orphan. Orphans, I feel, are the strongest human beings on the planet. The amount of things they have to deal with in their lives, is amazing. I have tried to capture how Peter copes with the feelings of being an underdog, his confusions and his self-doubt . This, I hope, has brought, a certain empathy and sensitivity to his character that explains how it helps him become the hero that he eventually turns out to be.

On How His Version Will Differ From Tobey Maguire's:

I love the work that Toby did. I've watched him in the earlier three movies as a fan and I feel that what he did was perfect. I would never even begin to compare myself with him. And I feel it's not the point either. This film is another chapter in the legacy of Spiderman and my responsibility was to remain true to the core of the character . I've tried to do it as best as I could.

On The Stunt Work Required For His Scenes As Spider-Man:

We had a great stunt team led by Andy Armstrong, who knew exactly what he wanted to achieve. And as far as doing the stunt goes, I had never done anything like it before. There were a whole new set of skills to develop and experience. I enjoyed every second of it - well not every second perhaps (laughs). But yes, most part of it, although it was hard work. I hope it shows on the screen.

On The "Challenges" Of His First Kiss With Emma Stone/Gwen Stacy:

Well, I got to practise for that - although on my own, I must add (laughs). I practised kissing on my hand, arms and in the mirror. I was just hoping I'll remember how to kiss when the moment comes and not fumble.

On His Most Memorable Moment On Set:

I'll always remember meeting Stan Lee, the creator of Spiderman. Like the earlier movies, he has a cameo in this one as well. It was incredibly exciting to meet such a legend, who's given so much hope to skinny boys around the world.

Agent #2- Where do we put the crate?

Agent #1- Where do you think dummie?

[Agent #2 continues without talking]

Agent #1 (sighing)- On top of the stand, there.

Agent #2- Doesn't it make more sense to put it in the truck?

[Agent #1 stops moving]

Agent #1 (sarcastically)- Yeah, if you want to freeze.

[Agent #2 shuts up]

[Then, immediately after you hear hefty machine mechanical sounds and out of the dark appears the Blizzard]

Blizzard (shouting)- Get moving!

[A.I.M agents start to move faster]

[Then the view changes to a completly differnt scene location which appears to be like a control room. Here you can see T'Challa obserbing the security tape, you can tell he might be a little upset. Then his servant comes out of the dark]

Servant (in some strange language but translated in english at the bottom]- Sir?

[T'Challa looks over and nods. No you can hear half-way droned-out suspenseful music as the camera zooms in on the mask of the panther. The screen goes black and you hear a loud, shreik-like slash]

First Peek at eFX’s Avengers Collectibles:

eFX' Avengers prop replicas sneak peek

You know The Avengers movie must be getting closer when licensee companies are making announcements. In my inbox today was a press release from eFX announcing their line of Avengers movie replicas, and showing off a first peek at what they have in store.

eFX Inc. has acquired the worldwide rights to create Marvel collectibles, and they’re not stopping at The Avengers movie. They’re launching a full line of products based on Marvel characters from both the films and the comic books. Prices are expected to range between $49 and $1,500, or possibly even more depending on the size and artistry of the collectible. All products will be available to buy at eFX’s website, and at select retail locations and conventions.

Included in their first batch of products are replicas of Captain America’s shield, Thor’s Mjolnir hammer, and a full-scale Iron Man Mark V mask. Based on the preview image they sent, it would appear that Cap’s helmet cowl will also be among the available products, as well as Thor’s silver headpiece. The first replicas will be on display at WonderCon in Anaheim, California from March 16-18.

Past replicas manufactured and sold by eFX include items from Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Disney, and more. Not bad for a company that’s only four years old.

This is so interesting because I had very similar feelings about all of the things mentioned in this article written by Graeme. I loved Byrne & Davis and just didnt get Bill's work - I actually thought for a time that they ruined a great book by bringing this overly stylized guy on.

I obviously became smarter & realize how incredibly incredible Bill was & to this day kick myself in the ass for not getting it in the first place.

Remember When We Didn’t Know Any Better?:

Reading recent collections of New Mutants Classic, as the logo describes it, I found myself remembering how difficult I found the Bill Sienkiewicz-illustrated issues when they were were first coming out. For the most part, it was the art, which was simultaneously more realistic and less grounded in ideas of a physical reality than what my 10 year old brain was used to at the time – I found it attractive but difficult to parse, to understand exactly what it all meant, sometimes – but Chris Claremont’s writing shifted to match what he was seeing, it seemed, with the stories becoming darker in tone (Professor Xavier has an illegitimate son with multiple personalities! Dani is being terrorized by an unstoppable monster! Cloak and Dagger have appeared and there’re drugs and addiction metaphors!) and less straight-ahead in execution. Re-reading it all now, it feels like bold stuff, a step forward from the Bob McLeod-illustrated issues and an important evolution not only for the book and its characters, but for Claremont as a writer and the X-Men franchise in general, but at the time… these were unsettling comics.

(When Jackson Guice and Kyle Baker came on as the regular art team, a year or so later, that was my era of true New Mutants love; I don’t know if it’s because I was at the right age, or that I could deal better with the more traditional art style.)

Remembering all this made me think about earlier prejudices I’d had about comics and artists in particular that seem ridiculous to me now: I remember thinking that Don Heck was boring, or that Jack Kirby was old-fashioned, for example, as well as being convinced that no-one could draw Guy Gardner as well as John Byrne had in Legends (This isn’t to be confused with my still-existing theory that no-one can draw Captain Britain as well as Alan Davis, although I’m looking forward to Gabriel Hardman proving me wrong in Secret Avengers). It’s embarrassing and weirdly reassuring to remember all of these ideas I had about what worked and didn’t work in comics back then, in part because oh man was I wrong about a lot of stuff, but also, it’s good to see myself learning and getting over snobbery and the like as I get older; I hope that, twenty years from now, I can look back on things I didn’t like and laugh at myself for my appalling taste.

That said, I’m wondering what comic prejudices and phobias you’ve had (and recovered from), dear readers. What used to turn you off, but you hate to admit it these days?

Marjorie Liu continues to blow us away with her writing. From taking on the kids in NYX: NO WAY HOME to the dark and mischievous DAKEN: DARK WOLVERINE to the lovable (but deadly) X-23, Liu always manages to add a little something extra to her issues.
In an unfortunate announcement, X-23 was revealed to be ending with issue #21. The good news is Liu and Mike Perkins are the new creative team for ASTONISHING X-MEN beginning with issue #48. That issue won't be on sale until March but we couldn't wait to ask Marjorie some questions on what she has planned.
Comic Vine: You first wrote the X-Men in your X-Men: Dark Mirror novel (2005). How has the team changed in your eyes since?
Marjorie Liu: The team of Dark Mirror existed in its own universe. It was part of the Marvel U, but that story was written for fans who might not be familiar with the X-Men, and so I can't really compare them to the official team of then -- and now.
CV: Your team consists of Wolverine, Warbird, Gambit, Iceman, Northstar, Cecilia Reyes and Karma. Did you get to pick the roster or were the characters chosen by editorial?
ML: The roster was almost entirely my choice.

CV: Will the series deal with school issues from WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN or will the characters be away from the school on missions/adventures or both?
ML: There will be some references to the school, but for the most part the characters of Astonishing will be on their own, having adventures that have nothing to do with those crazy, wild students!

CV: With Northstar living with his boyfriend and Gambit getting his own apartment, how will your team be assembled when needed? Will this be an official 'squad' Wolverine will call on for specific missions?
ML: It's going to evolve into an official squad, but what we'll see in this first arc or two is a team full of men and women trying to live their own lives away from the X-Men. Not because they're sick of being X-Men, but just because that's what people do: they have a job, and then they go home from that job.
CV: Hooray for the return of Cecilia Reyes! Has her attitude on 'costumed adventuring' changed? Will you explore any feelings/past relationship with Beast?
ML: No, her attitude hasn't changed all that much. Costumed adventuring really hasn't benefited her life in any measurable way. Just the opposite, actually. As for Beast...we'll see, won't we?
CV: Will you continue your knack for capturing the friendships/relationships between characters? (Your Gambit/X-23 and X-23/Jubilee portrayals were what set the book apart from other x-titles).
ML: You're very kind. I don't know if I've got a knack for it, but I am definitely focused on deepening the bonds between these characters, and exploring their relationships to one another.

CV: I know we should look forward and X-23 is currently on the West Coast but is there a chance she might pop up? Will Gambit check up on her or at least call her?
ML: You'll see a reference to X-23 in the first issue, though I can't say that she'll pop up in the book. Never say never, though. She's definitely part of Gambit's life.

Is This An Early Synopsis For The DR STRANGE Movie?

We know the movie is moving forward, we know the screenwriters have handed in a draft, but do we now have a brief story synopsis? Maybe. Have a read and see what you make of it..

Since we ran this Dr Strange article detailing a Scientist's involvement in the proposed movie version from Marvel Studios, many sites have been going with a "Is there a Dr Strange movie coming" approach. The thing is, we know there is. We reported as much months ago and aside from that screenwriters Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Donnelly have turned in their script. But JoBlo have an interesting addition to their report, in the form of a story synopsis. Where it came from I couldn't tell you, nor can I conform it's legitimacy. But here it is..

Doctor Strange centres around a New York surgeon, who stops running his practice after suffering injuries in a car crash. He then becomes a drifter and heads to the Himalayas, where he meets a healer and discovers that he has a great psychic power to fight against evil. Doctor Strange boasts powers that includes telepathy, teleportation, energy and astral projection.

Not exactly a stretch for anyone who wanted to make up a synopsis, but they are running it pretty much as if it's the real deal so who knows. Could there be any type of story outline in such an early stage of pre-production? Actually yes. We know the script is finished, it's not outside the realm of possibility that even though no director has been signed (that we know of) something like this could have leaked. Take it with a pinch of the ever handy salt for now but we will update as soon as we know any more.

We had heard the Chronicle director was Fox's choice to helm theFantastic Four reboot, but could they have him in mind to replace Mathew Vaughn on a sequel to First Class instead/also?

HeyUguys had a chat with the young director of found footage super-hero movie Chronicle, and as well as asking him some revealing questions about that movie, they inquired about the recent report that he was in line to direct a Fantastic Four reboot for Fox. But they also ask him about an X-Men movie. That is a new one for us, perhaps they were just testing the water, but either way Trank doesn't shoot it down..of course neither does he confirm anything! Here is an excerpt from the interview, in which Trank also gives his take on the proposed Akiraremake and reveals his favorite superhero..

If there was a US version of Akira, Chronicle would be it – would you make one?

Josh Trank: After Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, I stopped judging remakes. Who knows?

Will you be doing Fantastic Four or X-Men?

Josh Trank: It’s a little weird, as I knew this movie would work, but it’s been surprising how everyone’s responded. I have been working on some original ideas and things are being talking about, but nothing’s a signed deal yet.

Who’s your favourite comic-book character?

Josh Trank: Batman – Frank Miller is my favourite writer as I grew up with the Tim Burton Batman.

Last word on a sequel to First Class was that a script was being worked on, the cast are all looking forward to returning, and previous director Mathew Vaughn has still not signed up. So it is entirely possible that Fox are looking at other options, even if this particular rumor has little weight aside from Trank not outright denying it. What do you guys think?

Looks like the lack of Generation Hope in the recent Marvel solicits wasn’t a one-time thing, as writer James Asmus confirms the book’s cancellation in an interview over at CBR:

Yes, the book is ending with issue #17. I will say (as I did a month ago) that these were the five issues I planned from the beginning. You can read all the old interviews where I promised to get to the betrayal, and I knew I had to do it before “Avengers vs. X-Men.” The book was already under 20K copies when I took over, so while I figured there was a chance to tie into “AvX,” the way the market and the event developed, a “Generation Hope” tie-in doesn’t make sense… When Marvel first asked me to hop on the book last summer, I was told that they wanted me to take the book up to “AvX”. Sales were already below the 20K copy mark, so there was the expectation that unless a market-miracle happened, the book probably wouldn’t keep going after the first five issues.

I guess the question now becomes “Just how much of the remainder of the book’s run is going to be run-up to Avengers vs. X-Men?” Maybe Avengers: X-Sanction isn’t the only prelude book for that event after all…

Joss Whedon’s ‘Avengers’ Screenwriting Hurdle? Too Many Characters:

It’s always refreshing to hear a filmmaker talk candidly about the concerns and difficulties of creating something as large as, say, a blockbuster comic book movie that’s expected to draw in millions of fans and even more millions of dollars. Today’s burst of honesty comes from The Avengers director Joss Whedon, who told Empire Magazine (via Comic Book Movie) a ton about the project. Check out the link for more.

The money quote: “It was an up-all-month job. Finding the characters’ voices was not only easy, but glorious fun. It doesn’t suck to write Tony Stark, yet finding the structure was just brutal. I haven’t had that much trouble making a screenplay work since Serenity and, embarrassingly, for the exact same reason: there’s just too many characters.”

It’s fair to say that’s also a concern for fans, but it’s less that there are so many characters and more that there are so many massive, super-powered, enlarged egos in the film. How do you give them all space to shine brightly?

Fortunately, the best reason to be optimistic that Whedon stuck the landing with the script is his work on “The Astonishing X-Men,” a comic book series that might just be the best X-Men storyline in Marvel‘s catalog. If the man can handle that universe and that many larger-than-life characters, it seems reasonable he can do it in the condensed format of film. It’s also fantastic to see him talk about how much fun he had crafting the heroes. Joss Whedon effectively got paid to role play as Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk, Hawkeye, Thor, and Black Widow (although that last one is a little gender-bending) on a large scale and then see his fantasy played out with costumes and huge sets. How cool is that?

Could We Be Seeing The End of the X-Men?:
If you compare the current X-Men stories to ones of the past, you will notice that a lot has changed -- the stories of today are very different than those of yesterday. At the height of their popularity, the X-Men struggled against discrimination and prejudice. They were an ostracized race that humanity saw as a threat.
Today, Mutants are not only up against the prejudices of humankind; they are up against one another. Ever since the Scarlet Witch uttered those three little words, "no more mutants," everything has changed. The rift caused by the events leading up to SCHISM have left the X-Men very weak, and as they prepare to go up against the Avengers in the upcoming AVENGERS Vs. X-MEN story arc, things are looking even more grim for our heroes. As more problems have piled on, old problems continue to exist, so where should their focus really be?

The events that followed HOUSE OF M and DECIMATION led to the greater disintegration of the X-Men as both a team and as a family, and SCHISM served to solidify that collapse. Now, with very little money and resources; Wolverine has taken the young mutant generation and opened a school in Westchester, New York while Cyclops continues to lead the remaining team on the West Coast. The two leaders are not only separated by a continent; they are divided by their personal ideals. "No more mutants" meant no more mutant births, and the number of de-powered mutants continues to be overwhelming. However, aside from all of these more recent conflicts, the X-Men continue to be plagued by those who feel they should cease to exist.

The mutant race has always been threatened by external forces, but the most prominent has been the prejudice against them by humans. This idea was really introduced in Chris Claremont's run during his 17-year long career on the X-Men books. During that time Christ Claremont challenged comic readers. His run which spanned from 1975 to the early 1990's developed the X-men cast of characters, making them more intricate and interesting.
Influenced by the socio-political atmosphere in the United States; Claremont took the events he witnessed in this country and turned them into literary concepts -- applying the events sentiments to the experiences of his characters; giving them depth and making them multi-faceted. The racism, discrimination and prejudice he saw in American society is something he used and applied to his X-Men. These mutants who were different suddenly became relatable when Claremont witnessed the rift caused by prejudice and racial discrimination and used those concepts to build massively interesting story lines.

One of the early stories to deal with this idea of Mutant discrimination can be seen in GOD LOVES, MAN KILLS. Claremont's graphic novel delved into the struggle of the mutants. In this story, Reverend Stryker took it upon himself to isolate the mutants and call for a "genocide in the name of God." The story was very raw and very real, and was likely influenced by reality. Although this story took place years ago, the issues it addressed are still very real and continue to plague the mutant race in more recent story lines.

Recently the Purifiers have come to the forefront of several comic series. First in X-Factor where a de-powered Rictor joined the organization to spy on them for the X-Men, and also in the three part mini-series FEAR ITSELF: UNCANNY X-FORCE. The Purifiers may not presently be in any major ongoing story, but it is clear that the organization continues to strive for the genocide of the mutant race. The threat of the Purifiers exists and therefore the mutants continue to be a threat to parts of "humanity."

Very soon the X-Men will be going up against the Avengers in the AVENGERS VS X-MEN which launches this April and according to the minds behind this upcoming story arc not everyone will make it out alive. Combine that with the fact that some of the X-Men will be fighting against their own, (Wolverine and Beast will be up against the X-Men in some of the promotional art), the X-Men will ultimately grow even weaker.
Looking at the bigger picture, this is pretty bad news for the X-Men. The rift that was caused by SCHISM is still present and doesn't appear to be resolving any time soon, so going up against the AVENGERS when so many mutants have been de-powered is about one of the worst things that could happen to the mutant race. Weakened, and with a plethora of external forces that want to see their demise, the X-Men are in a bad position. Now more than ever the mutants need to come to terms with their differences and resolve them for the sake of their own survival.

A new plot synopsis has surfaced for Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man, revealing a few extra details about Peter's journey to discover his parents' secrets and how this sets him on a collision course with Oscorp and the Lizard.

As Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker) and Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy) continue their tour around the globe with new footage from The Amazing Spider-Man and Q&A sessions, The Times Of India has released a new plot synopsis which they claim comes directly from the studio.

The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Nothing too revealing here, although it does confirm a few previously heard rumors and topics brought up in interviews. With Oscorp clearly playing a significant role in the upcoming reboot, this also leaves one very important question: Where is Norman Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin? With no casting news of any sort, whether he'll be shrouded in mystery (a la Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes) only to be revealed as the villain in a future instalment remains to be seen. Marvel Select Celebrates Ten Years With New Colossus Figure:
It's hard to believe that Diamond Select Toys has released over 60 figures in their 7-inch Marvel Select line. To celebrate the ten years, they have already announced several upcoming figures including ones based on The Avengers and The Amazing Spider-Man movies.
Before you see those in comic and specialty shops, Colossus will be making his appearance.

In order to remain consistent with the other 7-inch figures, Colossus will actually stand at 8.25 inches and will have 16 points of articulation. To show the size comparison, Diamond Select Toys has released a Danger Room session with Colossus and Gambit (who is available now).

Colossus is due in mid-February and will be followed by the Green Goblin. I think we'll need to take a closer look at these in our Awesome Toy Picks feature when they're released. What do you think?
