But in the meantime, we sat down with the one and only Eric Radomski, Marvel Animation's Senior Vice President and Creative Director of Animation and director of the two-episode pilot debuting this Sunday.

The cast of "Marvel's Avengers Assemble"

Plus, take a peek behind the curtain with our full gallery of color storyboards from the premiere episode!

Having been with Marvel Animation since "Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man," Radomski has worked in the industry for years and fully understands the nuts-and-bolts inside the animation realm.

"My position is really from concept through delivery of all assets," he explains. "We knew which direction we were going with 'Marvel's Avengers Assemble.' It's a lot of pre-planning from the business and creative side, [and] managing that process from beginning to end, so my duty is supervising all those aspects."

The "concept" Radomski refers to includes giving fans more of the characters they fell in love with in last summer's blockbuster, "Marvel's The Avengers."

Thor gets ready for battle in a color storyboard from "Marvel's Avengers Assemble"

"[We're] respecting the character types illustrated in the movie without doing direct interpretations of Robert Downey, Jr. or Chris Hemsworth," the director elaborates. "It had more to do with the characters themselves, personality-wise, and the way they interacted with each other. We wanted to honor the origins and general view of those characters, [while speaking] to that younger audience on a level they can appreciate. The target audience we try and speak to is much younger. We want to invite them into the Marvel Universe, and this is sort of the first stepping stone."

In addition to that foundation, some of the character's appearances in "Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man" led to their looks in this series.

The Hulk leaps into action in a color storyboard from "Marvel's Avengers Assemble"

"That was the first show on [our] agenda, so it absolutely directed 'Marvel's Avengers Assemble,'" the executive remarks. "We had guest appearances of Cap and Hulk in Spider-Man, so those character designs were adapted with a bit of adjusting for the new series. Ultimately, they're the same design that carries across all the animation produced so far."

As for individual artists, when it came to selecting whose creative minds were most suitable there were a number of traits and characteristics that made them fit the mold best.

"I inherited part of a crew that existed at Film Roman at the time," Radomski recalls. "As the needs of production demanded, we'd look [for] people who could do realism in a simplistic way, on top of other requirements [since] we borrowed and brought on a lot of concepts from 'Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man' by the time we got to this show."

Tony Stark suits up in a color storyboard from "Marvel's Avengers Assemble"

The producer goes even more in depth with these artists, pointing out some of the many talents that had a hand in bringing this show to life.

"Jeff Wamester, who was one of our principle designers on the first season of Spidey, was commissioned to do the main cast of the Avengers," reminisces Radomski. "I wanted characters that would look not only strong, but also true in a comic sense, while still able to be interpreted into animation. He just has a natural skill for that drawing style.

"I can throw some reference [to Jeff] and give him an idea of what I'm looking for. Nine times out of 10, he comes back and it's exactly what I was looking for. He puts it down on paper and is just super talented! He deserves the most credit on design because it's really his pen that puts it down."

Captain America in a color storyboard from "Marvel's Avengers Assemble"

While Wamester's pen crafted the Avengers' initial looks, Character Designer Jerome Moore proceeded to follow up.

"We brought him in to be a clean-up character artist," continues Radomski. "He's taken what Jeff had done as a three-quarter view just to set the character in tone. Jerome then interprets it and does the mechanical turns on characters so overseas production understands what the character looks like in profile and from the back. With [Jeff and Jerome], the drawings look beautiful and effortless."

With that being said, we asked Radomski what he enjoyed most about being involved with "Marvel's Avengers Assemble."

The Red Skull enters the fray in a color storyboard from "Marvel's Avengers Assemble"

"As sappy as this might sound," he laughs, "it really is the opportunity and privilege of working with so many talented people. Animation requires every credit given at the end of every episode. Literally, you take one brick out of that wall and the show is less, so [it's] most satisfying to be part of the team. I, fortunately, get to be at the front of the charge on that, but it's great to know all of us are working toward the same goal.

"We celebrate the successes and work on the problems together. Everyone's work contributes to the end product, and that is really [rewarding]. To be a part of Marvel is great, but being a part of the animation team is the best job I could ever ask for."

Now Marvelites, to see that hard work pay off mark your calendars and tune in to "Marvel's Avengers Assemble" this Sunday at 11:00 a.m. ET, only inside Marvel Universe on Disney XD!

Whedon: SHIELD is Not About Superhero Guest Stars

It's a great time for fans of both Joss Whedon and fans of Marvel and the many of us who include ourselves in both groups, now that Whedon is launching a new TV series, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., this fall.

At ABC's Upfront last week, I spoke to Whedon about S.H.I.E.L.D. to get a few comments about the return of Agent Phil Coulson, the character J. August Richards plays in the pilot and what the show will be week to week.

IGN TV: Coulson's back, but I'm assuming it won't be that simple.

Joss Whedon: Not simple, you're right.

IGN: So will we find out in the first episode, "this is why he's back", or will it be more us figuring it out as we go along?

 Visit website

Sent via feedly // A news reader for creative minds.

Ed Johnson

It’s On. Marvel Vs. Fox As Both Avengers 2 And Days Of Future Past Will Feature Quicksilver

I had been waiting for this.

Bryan Singer announced tonight, through his Twitter account, that the character of Quicksilver will be appearing in X-Men: Days Of Future Past. It's undoubtedly the biggest film news break of the day.

Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.

— Bryan Singer (@BryanSinger) May 23, 2013

So why is this such a big deal? Because both Marvel and Fox have the rights to use certain characters in their Marvel comics movies, and amongst them are the brother-sister team of The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. Not only were these members of The Avengers, they're also Magneto's kids – crossing between the two "story sets," they wound up being both Marvel Studios and Fox movie options.

We'd recently learned that Quicksilver will be appearing in Joss Whedon's next Avengers film, alongside his sister. It almost reads like a declaration of war to hear he's also going to turn up in Fox's next X-Men picture. Will we soon hear that The Scarlet Witch is in too?

There may have been an outside chance, I suppose, that Marvel and Fox would collude to create shared interpretations of the characters, but Singer's tweet seems to put paid to that. If he's "a REALLY fast kid" in the 70s, I don't know how he'd be Joss Whedon's planned 20-something.

So, there we go. How exciting. I'm sure many of you are going to take sides – and I bet I can guess which team proves the most popular – but I promise you this, I'm impartial.

Here, incidentally, is Evan Peters. I can see how he could be Michael Fassbender's kid.

I do hope he hasn't just been thrown in as a corporate rivalry afterthought. Tell us it ain't so, Mr. Singer.

It's On. And, as the video below shows, they may have gotten the better of him. (As the person who shot the video notes, Garfield's co-star and girlfriend Emma Stone, aka Gwen Stacy, can also be seen in the video, with the dog.)

This of course isn't the first time Garfield has popped up unexpectedly dressed as Spider-Man: He made a surprise appearance in a store-bought costume at Comic-Con International 2011, where he delivered a heartfelt speech about what the wall-crawler meant to him as a kid.

"Peter Parker has inspired me to feel stronger," Garfield said. "He made me, Andrew, braver. He reassured me that by doing the right thing, it's worth it, it's worth the struggle, it's worth the pain, it's worth even the tears, the bruises and the blood. "I didn't say I retired, what I said when I was making Chinese Zodiac was that it would be my last big action movie and obviously that turned out not to be true.

 Visit website

Sent via feedly // A news reader for creative minds.

Ed Johnson

Avengers 2: Whedon on Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch

Avengers 2: Whedon on Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch

Joss Whedon is certainly keeping busy with Marvel. Having written and directed the mega-blockbuster, The Avengers, he is now launching Marvel's first live-action TV show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., while also preparing Marvel's The Avengers 2.

I spoke to Whedon this week at ABC's Upfront, where S.H.I.E.L.D. was being announced and asked him a couple of questions about Avengers 2 and some of the characters in it.

Whedon had previously alluded to a brother/sister duo being in the film, which EW later said was indeed Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. When I brought up Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch to Whedon, he confirmed they were the characters in question, explaining, "You know, they had a rough beginning. They're interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn't necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they're not there to make things easier. I'm not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier."

 Visit website

Sent via feedly // A news reader for creative minds.

Ed Johnson

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. producer says Luke Cage is not in the show

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. producer says Luke Cage is not in the show

Ever since the first teaser footage was revealed for Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., rumours have begun to fly concerning which Marvel heroes might be making an appearance.

However, fans putting two and two together have apparently been coming up with five, particularly in the case of J. August Richards' character, who had widely been assumed to be none other than Luke Cage.

Cage was one of the first African-American characters to head up his own comic-book, but according to show producer, Jeffrey Bell, that isn't the part Richards is playing.

"It's not the [character] people are talking about," says Bell. "Honestly, we were looking for this part, and we just said, 'Look, all our parts are open to all diversity.' So the fact that we have a black dude who is awesome and it's J, was just because he was the best actor. It wasn't like, 'You know who…!'"

Back to the drawing board then, rumour-merchants. Perhaps we could start with just how Agent Coulson has managed to resurrect himself from the dead? That should keep you busy for a little while...

What Was Missed in Early Attempts to Copy Chris Claremont

Brett White thinks about a subconscious lesson of the X-Men's success:

There's a misconception amongst comic book fans that feminist creators and characters means that their comics will change for the worse. There's a fear that women reading comics will fundamentally change some ill-defined something. The truth is, the X-Men prove that feminist creators and characters lead to success. Having a team composed of strong men and women doesn't dilute the action. As a kid reading these comics, I didn't realize how feminist they were. I just knew they were awesome.

I'm not sure that all X-Men creators are feminist, per se, but it's true that Chris Claremont created a culture in that series where women were treated as equals at the very least, unlike so many other superteams. It's odd to think that, although so many comics and creators attempted to copy Claremont's soap operatics (and moral corruption storylines) in an attempt to ape Uncanny X-Men's success, none really thought to also adopt his approach towards female characters.

 Visit website

Sent via feedly // A news reader for creative minds.

Ed Johnson

Rumor: HAWKEYE Out for AVENGERS 2?

Rumor: HAWKEYE Out for AVENGERS 2?

Well, if true, this is unexpected:

Now, per The Daily SuperHero's Hollywood source Renner is done as Hawkeye mainly due to his negative comments after The Avengers… Even though nothing official has been said about Hawkeye's involvement in The Avengers 2, Whedon has said he will introduce a new brother/sister duo to the superhero ensemble team. More reasoning that Renner's days are over because the hero depth chart is filling up fast and there might not be any room for the archer.

The source hints that there's the tiniest chance Renner will reprise his role in The Avengers Sequel but the source also said there is a greater chance Hawkeye will be recast (like War Machine and the Hulk have been recast before). Finally, the source said if Hawkeye is to be recast there is a solid chance he could be incorporated into the new television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a primary character.

This is, of course, just a rumor with only an anonymous source to back it up – In other words, hardly the most credible of reports. However, coming after the Deadline Hollywood story about Avengers actors reportedly falling out with Marvel over the sequel, it's becoming oddly believable that, whenever Avengers 2 comes out, at least one actor won't return…

 Visit website

Sent via feedly // A news reader for creative minds.

Ed Johnson

The Black Panther Story Thickens – Marvel Interested In Cape Town Shoot For Next Avengers

The Black Panther Story Thickens – Marvel Interested In Cape Town Shoot For Next Avengers

Anant Singh, the chairman of Cape Town's film studios, was featured in a bulletin on the Cape Town radio station 5FM yesterday. His big reveal was that Marvel Studios have been in touch and are interested in filming some of the next Avengers film in the area.

It wasn't entirely clear if this meant in the Cape Town studio facilities or on location, but I'd be very surprised if it isn't the latter. Why go to Cape Town when you have a deal in place to use UK studio spaces?

We have been expecting Black Panther to be involved – it certainly looks like casting is underway – and Singh's comments would seem to translate into yet more evidence.

T'Challa, the Black Panther, comes from the nation of Wakanda but, well, there's no real Wakanda to go film in, for one thing, and what's more, South Africa has regularly been part of his stories.

At this point, I'd be more surprised if the character isn't featured. This will make three new superpowered characters for the film – Black Panther, Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch – with who knows how many more to follow. I wonder how big their roles will be?

And I wonder if any of them, particularly T'Challa, will get their own standalone movies afterwards.

The Black Panther Story Thickens – Marvel Interested In Cape Town Shoot For Next Avengers

 Visit website

Sent via feedly // A news reader for creative minds.

Ed Johnson

First Glimpse at Marvel's Drax the Destroyer?

First Glimpse at Marvel's Drax the Destroyer?

Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has just tweeted a new image that appears to be him undergoing a makeup application for his character Drax the Destroyer. Whether it be the (superior) hand-drawn days of old or the Disney-Pixar era, the studio is renowned for its leadership in animation. Since Disney acquired Marvel, we've all been anxiously awaiting announcements of what they would do with the properties in terms of feature-length animation.

Well, the official announcement is out of the bag, and we can look forward to Big Hero 6 in 2014.

Yep, Big Hero 6. I have no particular affinity for the property, but I absolutely love what it seems to indicate. It's probable that we'd never see a Big Hero 6 live-action movie, which tells me that maybe – just maybe – Walt Disney Animation Studios will be using this format to put the lesser known Marvel properties to good use. Things like Runaways that have struggled to get off the ground in recent years could be revived as animated features with the intent of appealing to kids, perhaps even as something of a "proof of concept" to both audiences and the studio that a property is viable for expansion.

 Visit website

Sent via feedly // A news reader for creative minds.

Ed Johnson

Assembled! "I'm not making Downey money. I'm making A LOT, which is exciting. I'm not pretending to be a poor farmer, an Everyman, an ANYman. But that number is nuts."

That "Downey money" to which Whedon is referring is Robert Downey Jr.'s $50 million paycheck for the first Avengers. As we already know, some of the other cast members were only paid $200,000 for their work on the film -- although, those figures are currently being renegotiated for the sequel.

 Visit website

Sent via feedly // A news reader for creative minds.

Ed Johnson

Report: Agents Of SHIELD Picked Up For A Series, Trailer To Premiere Soon – UPDATED

Report: Agents Of SHIELD Picked Up For A Series, Trailer To Premiere Soon – UPDATED

UPDATE: Read on for the original story, but do check out the first promo clip too…

According to the apparently rather reliable TV By The Numbers, ABC have formally picked up the Marvel Movieverse spin-off, Agents of SHIELD, for a full season order.

What's more, they cite "reports" that the first promo will air during the season finale of Once Upon a Time.

That's this Sunday.

We'll keep you posted on any significant updates.

UPDATE: I said we'd keep you updated. IGN are calling the green light "official," though they're not citing any sources and there's no ABC press release I can see as yet.

Report: Agents Of SHIELD Picked Up For A Series, Trailer To Premiere Soon – UPDATED

 Visit website

Sent via feedly // A news reader for creative minds.

Ed Johnson

<media:rating>nonadult</media:rating>
Ed Johnson Presents: MARVELOUS WORLD The Marvel Minimate Action Figure Series
