Collider has been provided with these fantastic storyboards that have never seen the light of day by Star Wars Insider Magazine. Like any movie sequences are boarded but never make it to film, but with Star Wars there is something special about the entity. Even commonplace unused storyboards still have some value to the fans. This one is of particular interest not just because it depicts a battle sequence, but because it involves Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn.

During pre-production on the first Star Wars prequel, artists pitched battle concepts showing the Jedi-led attack on Theed before penetrating the hangar during the film’s climatic battle. While the sequence didn’t make the final film, Ed Natividad drew up some storyboards for the fight. The magazine will be publishing the full storyboard sequence in their celebratory issue, and we’ve got a few of the images to share with our readers. Star Wars is returning to the big screen in 3D this February and to commemorate the occasion the people at Lucasfilm will be giving away Darth Maul 3D glasses at all RealD3D theaters.

The Hero Complex is reporting that to go along with the special events that they have planed for AMC theaters, that all RealD3D theaters on the opening day of Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace will be handing out Darth Maul 3D glasses. The glasses, pictured above, will be available while supplies last and unlike some 3D movie glasses giveaways you will not have to break them after the movie is over. Like stated earlier this promotion is going along with the one AMC is doing in ten select AMC theaters where they are giving away Hasbro toys and 3D glasses that look like Pod Racing Goggles.

It may be the largest entertainment production in history. More than 800 people on four continents have spent six years and nearly $200 million creating it. The story runs 1,600 hours, with hundreds of additional hours still being written. Nearly 1,000 actors have recorded dialogue for 4,000 characters in three languages.

The narrative is so huge that writers created a 1,000-page “bible” to keep the details straight, and the director recently asked a colleague not to spoil moments he hadn’t yet seen.

It’s not a movie or a TV series. It’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, the most expensive, ambitious and riskiest video game ever produced.

Created out of a 60,000-square-foot converted warehouse next to a cooking school on the outskirts of Austin, Texas, the Old Republic is proof that while box-office, network TV ratings and music sales are slumping, games are holding their own, thanks to steady growth from online games. Revenue from games played online last year topped $7 billion, up from $6.5 billion in 2010, according to Parks & Assoc.

Did the prequels change cinema?

Even among its interactive peers, the Old Republic is touted as a great leap forward. Much as the first “Star Wars” movie in 1977 changed film history, its makers hope to create a new gold standard for gaming.

“We want to do to other video games what talkies did to silent films,” said Rich Vogel, co-director of the studio leading the game’s production.

To recoup its massive investment, the Old Republic’s publisher, Electronic Arts Inc., will have to snag more than 1 million customers willing to spend $60 to buy the game and an additional $15 a month to play for years on end. The game, released in late December, already has more than a million registered users, but many could leave after a free 30-day trial.

“The real test is whether they can retain subscribers in the long run,” said analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen & Co.

At the Austin home office of game developer BioWare, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts, more than 400 designers, programmers, writers and artists have immersed themselves in the imagined Star Wars universe, surrounded by maps of the ice planet Hoth, armor designs for bounty hunters and even a five-day weather forecast for Princess Leia’s home world of Alderaan.

Art has been outsourced to Russia, Estonia and China. Motion capture filming is done in L.A. and Vancouver, Canada, with voices recorded in New York, London and Paris in English, French and German. Quality assurance testing takes place in Romania, Argentina and India, while technical operations are run out of Virginia and the customer service center operates in Ireland. A regular plane shuttles employees between Austin and Electronic Arts’ headquarters in Redwood Shores, Calif.

“Coordinating it all is like teaching elephants to do ballet,” said Greg Zeschuk, who co-founded BioWare with Ray Muzyka.

Spotlight on Irvin Kershner

The Old Republic’s builders are trying to fundamentally change the online gaming experience. In most such games, players, alone or in groups, go on generic quests interspersed with narrative moments. But what players see and do in the Old Republic is shaped by the players’ own decisions. On one mission, an imperial agent in search of clues can flirt with a female character or threaten to kill her — and then do so, after she talks.

Those choices take place in the context of eight distinctive storylines inspired by movies and written for different character types whom players choose at the beginning of their adventure. Players who choose the smuggler will see hints of “Big Trouble in Little China,” for instance, while the trooper’s tale is loosely based on “Band of Brothers.”

“With each character class, you create and star in your own ‘Star Wars’ adventure,” said head writer Daniel Erickson, who with 16 scribes created every detail of the Old Republic’s galaxy down to details about Sith art, interstellar wedding protocol and the look of the elephant-like Bantha’s excrement. It’s all collected in a digital library, accessible available only to BioWare employees, called BioWiki.

And as with every online game, it allows players to join together on missions or engage in mortal combat against one another.

The idea for the game has its origins at a 2005 meeting between Vogel and BioWare’s Zeschuk and Muzyka, two Canadian physicians-turned-game developers. After attempts to adapt “Lord of the Rings,” “A Game of Thrones” and Marvel comic book super-heroes like such as Spider-Man, the team signed a co-publishing deal with “Star Wars” creator George Lucas.

The filmmaker, who declined to comment for this story, blessed the idea of setting the Old Republic in “Star Wars” pre-history and gave Muzyka and Zeschuk virtually free rein. His LucasArts’ staff stepped in only to soften content they found too risque, such as scenes involving sex slaves. To avoid contradicting established tales of Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, the game takes place 3,000 years before the “Star Wars” films.

From a business perspective, potential rewards are huge: World of Warcraft, the most successful multiplayer online game to date, has generated more than $3 billion in profit over the last seven years.

'Star Wars': A toy story?

“There’s no other opportunity to make money like this in the entertainment industry because people keep paying to play continuously,” said Bruce Hack, a former chief executive of World of Warcraft publisher Vivendi Games.

It’s also a great risk. In addition to the nearly $200 million spent to create the game, tens of millions of additional dollars per year will be required to keep it refreshed with new stories and adventures.

When the makers of the Old Republic began their work, subscribers were flocking to multiplayer online games. But that trend has reversed recently. Even the mighty World of Warcraft has lost nearly 2 million players over the last year as customers have embraced free online titles such as FarmVille and League of Legends.

In addition, although “Star Wars” is among the most popular and recognizable entertainment brands in history, characters and story lines familiar from the movies are not part of the game’s landscape, because its setting is so far in advance of the film narratives. There is no Han Solo or Chewbacca in sight.

Some who participated in pre-release testing last fall have already developed a devout passion for the Old Republic. Jeff Hollis and his wife, Deirdre, have matching “Star Wars” tattoos and help run TORWars.com, a fan site devoted to the game.

On a recent Sunday night, while their 3-year-old son slept nearby, the Burbank residents fell just short of their goal of capturing a Jedi ship when the beta test ended and the game went offline. “We both let out a cry,” Jeff recalled. “We had already become accustomed to having the game as a part of our lives.”

Boy, Koreans sure know how to market cellphones. While we philistines in America might show off the phone's functionality or at least have an attractive girl in a pink dress passive-aggressively mocking other phones, the Korean know what makes consumers buy, and that's Darth Vader teleporting into a women's restroom. This ad brings up so many questions: 1) Did Lucas really approve this? 2) What the hell is "Warp"? 3) Really, shouldn't Vader have his own bathroom, being the Dark Lord of the Sith and all? 4) Do you expect to see anything funnier than Darth Vader's pee-pee dance today? This is a 6'4", 300-pound (just like me!) Stormtrooper cake made by Amanda Oakleaf Cakes for the Arisia Sci-Fi Convention in Boston. He provided over 600 servings, significantly more than an Ewok cake would have. Plus less hair. Nobody likes eating hair. Except my cat. God, you know you're just gonna hock that up in the middle of the night and make me scream at you! Just kidding, I don't actually scream at my pets. Star Wars Activities Planned Around Phantom Menace Weekend (Cinema Blend)

In preparation for the re-release of George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace in 3D, the AMC theater chain has announced a series of exclusive activities and planned giveaways that will take place during opening weekend, Feb. 10-12, at select AMC locations.

For starters, fans who purchase RealD 3D tickets will receive an all-new HasbroStar Wars Fighter Pod, because toys are – and always have been – an integral part of Lucas’ Star Wars experience. As the release clarifies, Fighter Pods are limited to one per ticket, and are available all weekend long, while supplies last.

Phantom Menace isn’t my favorite Star Wars film. But Lucas apparently plans 3D retrofits on all six of his Star Wars films, and I’m anxiously looking forward to seeing how the conversion improves the finished products. I also think it’s cool for the studio to go the extra mile and incorporate fans into an interactive weekend. Too much negativity swirls around the Star Wars franchise these days. If you are aStar Wars fan in one of the above markets, shelve your aggression, swing by, and remember what it’s like to have a good time at a Star Wars movie once again.

In a story at MarketWatch.com, we learn a bit of interesting news about SWTOR. It’s an article/interview about Electronic Arts’ CEO Riccitiello, 52, but contains a fun tidbit about the BioWare hit of the year- SWTOR.

According to the source:

In a Dec. 23 statement, EA boasted that “The Old Republic” had attracted more than 1 million registered subscribers in just three days on the market.

Doug Creutz of Cowen & Co. says that Riccitiello’s tenure as CEO has featured misfires along with its successes but that “Star Wars” may represent his biggest bet of all, considering both the purchase price of BioWare/Pandemic and the development costs poured into the game since then.

“I think it’s safe to say that the total all-in investment in ‘Star Wars’ is probably approaching half a billion dollars,” Creutz says. “EA has minimized its risks as much as it can on this bet, but it’s still a risky bet. To the extent that any one game defines his tenure, it’s going to be how ‘Star Wars’ performs.”

If this is accurate, that is absolutely insane!

Half a billion dollars? That is simply an enormous amount of money for a video game, even for a large publisher like EA. Does dumping a lot of money into a game guarantee success? Definitely not! We’ve seen this as a prime example in other forms of media as well- such as the movie industry. However, it does mean that EA has a great deal riding on the success of this game.

With such a huge investment amount, they are indebted to finding success and this includes making the gamers happy so they continue to buy and pay to play the game. Happy gamers means profit for EA.

A batch of new posters has been released ahead of the upcoming re-release of the much maligned Star Wars: Episode 1, and even the staunchest Lucas-basher would have to admit they look pretty cool.

We particularly like the red, lightsaber-themed design, although there’s also something to be said for the Darth Maul close-up, complete with menacing tag-line, “At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi.”

We can take or leave that pod-racer imagery to be honest, but as we mentioned in the sub-heading, at least Jar-Jar is nowhere to be seen. Now if only Lucas would edit him out of the cut, altogether…

The posters celebrate the new 3D edition of the film, which Lucas believes will enhance the storytelling experience. “You get the story much faster and much better,” he explains. “It's nothing overwhelming. It's just a better experience, and it's easier to understand the story experience.”

Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace 3D will open in UK cinemas on 9 February 2012. If those scars have healed over, maybe it’s time to give it another chance?

Despite only having launched about a month ago, Star Wars: The Old Republic is already gearing up for its next content update. As BioWare ramps up to release the update, it wants its fans to be getting excited for it as well. In that vein, the studio has released a new video highlighting Kaon Under Siege, one of the new flashpoints in the upcoming patch,

The story behind this flashpoint continues the game's current storyline, this time giving players a glimpse at the Tion Hegemony sector of the galaxy. Prior to the flashpoint, the Rakghoul plague has spread across multiple world in the system, killing the lucky and transforming those less fortunate into Rakghouls themselves. A few lucky survivors on the planet of Kaon have managed to hold out against the Rakghoul menace, and of course both the Empire and the Republic wish to rescue these survivors, eradicate the Rakghoul plague, and ultimately negotiate an alliance with the Tion Hegemony. This Week in The Clone Wars: The Mandalorians Are Back – With Katee Sackhoff!:

"A Friend in Need" premieres January 13, 2012 at 8pm ET/PT on The Cartoon Network.

Last year, in an episode called “Heroes on Both Sides,” Ahsoka Tano learned that not all of the Separatists are motivated by evil. That realization even coincided with a change in how she was drawn, such that she looked more mature.

In this week’s episode, “A Friend in Need,” Ahsoka is reunited with Lux Bonteri, the Separatist who shaped her thinking last year. This time, however, he’s aligned himself with the Mandalorian Death Watch cult — suggesting that he might not have been that heroic after all.

It must be said that the Mandalorians have great voice talent: Jon Favreau reprises his role as Pre Vizla, and Katee Sackhoff (Kara ‘Starbuck’ Thrace from Battlestar Galactica) debuts as Bo-Katan.

And plus, as this clip suggests, they also know how to make an entrance:

Budget concerns are still keeping the long-discussed live-action Star Wars TV series at bay. From earlier reports, we knew the project would be set between the third and fourth Star Wars movies while Luke and Leia are growing up, but would not actually feature them.

The series focuses on the seedy side of the long-ago galaxy as it follows the rising Empire and some of the more unseemly elements like gangsters and bounty hunters. Even with 50 scripts completely finished, the series is still on hold.

IGN talked to Lucasfilm bigwig Rick McCallum mainly about his upcoming film Red Tails, but also coaxed some Star Wars TV information out of him, including that the working title for the series is Star Wars: Underworld.

You can see the full video below, but the gist of the conversation revolves around the huge changes going on in television that make it difficult to find a good place for the series, budget concerns for all the special effects, and claims that each episode of the show is bigger, more adult and complex than the prequels.
