Edelman is in search of a Community Manager to join our Toronto team, supporting a leading global technology brand.

The successful candidate will join the Toronto Digital practice of Edelman, the largest PR firm in the world. Our core services include developing social media strategy, execution and measurement, online conversation monitoring, influencer relations, reputation management & measurement, and ongoing education in the form of seminars and workshops.

Edelman is also an environment which offers room for growth both personally and professionally – our goals are ambitious, we are growing quickly and we are seeking the right individual to help us continue on this great momentum.

If you share this vision and think you have what it takes, read on.

Influencer engagement

Digital Digest: What Edelman Canada is reading in digital marketing, technology and strategy. Keeping you up-to-date on what was big on Twitter this week.

Digital Digest is a weekly bundle of six links, served up on Edelman Canada’s Our Ideas blog on Fridays. It’s also available by email. If you know someone who would like to be added to the mailing list, have any questions or just want to share some thoughts on anything you read here, email me. Let’s get a conversation going.

Case Study: Kellogg’s Adds 42,000 Fans with Facebook Ads

Kellogg’s wanted to raise awareness for a new breakfast cereal, Krave, which is targeted at 18 to 24 year olds (a first). In order to reach what was a brand new audience for Kellogg’s, the cereal maker partnered with Facebook to launch a multi-faceted ad campaign to recruit fans and drive engagement. This case study, prepared by Facebook, details the tactics and results.

Part of this balanced marketing budget.

Infographic: How Consumers Interact With Your Facebook Page

This infographic from Moontoast shows the three ways customers can interact with a brand Page on Facebook – and how to approach each kind of interaction with a different mindset.

The Facebook marketing funnel.

Research: Who Clicks on Facebook Ads?

More companies are investing their dollars in Facebook advertising in order to reach Facebook’s growing user base of 750 million people worldwide. But not all users respond to advertising the same way. As Facebook continues to expand the range of advertising it offers, knowing how your audience will react to a particular kind of advertisement will allow you to use your dollars better.

Maximize the value of your Fan interactions.

Facebook Prepares to Integrate Music

Facebook will begin integrating with online music services like Spotify and Rdio, allowing users to publish streaming music directly to their streams. Facebook’s announcement follows other popular sites like Tumblr, in recognizing that sharing music has become a major driver of online activity.

We jamming.

Bonus Content: Tumblr finds sweet spot with fashion, media brands.

Facebook ending Deals product after four-month test

Companies offering daily deals like Groupon and Teamsave just earned themselves some breathing room: after a four-month experiment with a similar service, Facebook shut down its Deals product. The world’s largest social network wasn’t able to fit Deals into its larger offering, according to analysts, and ultimately decided it could find other ways to help local businesses.

Let me make you an offer you can refuse.

Who Wants to Own Your Identity?

Google is muscling in on Facebook’s home turf as the online identity gatekeeper. The Mountainview, California-based search goliath has plenty to gain by insisting users of its Google+ social network use their real names, a policy that Facebook has been enforcing for years. But there is more than just money at stake. As recent statements from Facebook staff and the U.K. government have shown, questions of digital freedom and online privacy require serious consideration by Internet users.

Neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures.

Bonus Content: The role of pseudonyms in discourse.

Through their nifty SXSW PanelPicker, the public can help weigh in on which panels they’d like to see during next year’s conference. We here at Edelman, submitted nine panel ideas that are up for next year’s programming, as well as three panels for the health track at SXSW.
For the third year in a row, Cadbury Canada opened its doors to the Cadbury Bicycle Factory, which encourages Canadians to help build bikes for children living in rural Ghana. In Canada, we often take our bikes for granted. To us, they represent warmer weather, exercise and fun. But for these children, a bike means so much more, including access to education and a chance for a brighter future.

You’re probably wondering how chocolate helps build bikes, right? Well, I’ll tell you. The concept is quite simple actually. In exchange for entering the UPC code from a favourite Cadbury product at www.thebicyclefactory.ca or www.facebook.com/BicycleFactory, consumers donate one ‘virtual bike part’ to help build a virtual bicycle. Once 100 virtual bike parts are assembled, a real bike is built and delivered to youth in rural Ghana.

Why Ghana? Cadbury’s history is deeply rooted in Ghana, having been instrumental in establishing the cocoa industry over 100 years ago. Today, the company is committed to helping improve the life and future of the communities in these cocoa growing regions.

Since 2009, with the help of Canadians coast to coast, Cadbury Canada has delivered 9,332 bikes to Ghana– but it wanted to deliver even more. So the company turned to Edelman to help amplify the 2011 program in a meaningful and relevant way.

How did we do it? Leveraging both Edelman’s goodpurpose and 8095 report findings, in addition to using the Edelman global network to help vet the strategy, the Toronto Consumer Marketing team built a plan for Cadbury that would amplify the Bicycle Factory story by connecting with Millennials, mommy bloggers and bike enthusiasts in a meaningful way.

For starters, there is no question that the Bicycle Factory is already an amazing program, so we knew we didn’t need to create a story for them. What we needed to do was create the reverberation effect – ignite storytellers, to inspire and influence consumers to take action on behalf of the cause, in their own way and on their own time.

Storytellers? Rather than hiring paid spokespeople, we selected two Millennials who are very active in the social media space as “The Factory Workers” to be directly involved in and actually take part in the entire Bicycle Factory experience. Rebecca Bollwitt and Darius Bashar, influential bloggers from Vancouver and Toronto, respectively, were invited to go to Ghana this past February to help physically deliver the bikes built in 2010 and engage with local children who have benefited from the program.

In order to inspire The Factory Workers to take action, we needed to provide them with a first-hand experience and demonstrate how these bikes are transforming lives for the better in Ghana. Naturally, because of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, they became ambassadors for the program and shared their experience with their followers in their own authentic way – inspiring their networks to take action and help build bikes…and it worked!

Through our storytellers, traditional media outreach, Twitter engagement and on-the-ground buzz- generating executions, Edelman Toronto was able to get the word out and help make a difference! The Cadbury/Edelman team was able to generate over 13 million media impressions, 54 hits, 11 posts by influential mommy and bike-enthusiast bloggers, almost 400,000 potential Twitter impressions, not to mention tweets from very high-profile Canadians such as Erica Ehm, Brett Wilson and Arlene Dickenson.

And how does that all translate into bikes for Ghana? Well, I am proud and excited to say that with our help, Cadbury will be delivering another 3,283 bikes this year! As a result of Edelman Toronto’s innovative PR program (not to mention passion for this cause), we are helping 3,283 students spend less time walking to and from school and more time learning, helping their families and, well, just being kids!

Who knew the power of chocolate? When the Factory doors re-open in 2012, join the movement – eat chocolate, build bikes and make a difference.

Are Privacy Settings Splintering the Social Web?

Facebook announced this week changes to the way users can select which groups of followers see their updates, bringing the godfather of social networks in line with Google+’s more granular privacy controls. Writing for GigaOm, Mathew Ingram argues that these controls are ”time-consuming and fiddly and irritating” and may cause people to share less.

Quote: “I like seeing the personal photos mixed in with the business, or the jokes people use to lighten the mood. And I think the serendipity and sense of personal contact that comes from that kind of sharing is an important part of what makes the social web powerful, and the benefits that come from it.”

Tweet Scheduling Can Increase Clicks by 200%

Over the last few months your editor has repeatedly been asked when the best time to post content on the Web is. The answer is always the same: take a research-based approach and use A/B testing to find out when the audience you want to reach is online. Once you’ve identified a window, tools like Buffer, which your editor has been testing, can help you quickly schedule your content. Buffer this week released research showing a 200% increase in clicks for users who had been using the tool for two weeks.

MePlease partners with Get Satisfaction

Get Satisfaction, which provides a platform for online customer communities, this week announced a new partnership with MePlease that will bring its content and communities into the bricks-and-mortar store environment. The link-up will reward customers with special offers delivered to their mobile devices, while helping brands identify brand champions by tracking a customer’s social media “journey” and demographic information.

Twitter Gets Some Analytics Loving

Starting last week, all links longer than 20 characters posted to Twitter or its clients are being wrapped in Twitter’s t.co URL shortener. If you manage a blog or website you may see an immediate spike in visits referred from the t.co domain. As The Next Web writes, “Twitter just stepped up and demanded to be noticed. If you weren’t convinced of the physical traffic Twitter drives, you should definitely notice it now.”

Since starting here in early 2010 I’ve been a broken record about Edelman being the best place to work. Before I was even hired by Edelman I wrote a post about the company’s corporate culture on my personal blog and continued to post on Edelman.ca [bragging] about what I thought was the best kept secret.

The secret ingredient you ask? A focus on people.

Every year the Toronto leadership team presents their employee engagement plan, and although this may sound like a boring scene from The Office, it’s quite the opposite. I believe that this plan is the foundation for our success. It’s also the accessible and down to earth nature of the leadership team as well as a commitment to their employees that drives this success.

Commitment to employees was further expressed through the recent renovations in Toronto and at the Montreal office, raising the bar in terms of fine design. I’ve had family and friends visit the office and comment on how cool the Toronto space is and look with envy at the patio we get to enjoy during our weekly happy hour called ‘Foursies’. (My friends all know what and when ‘Foursies’ is, and frequently ask to be invited.) Finally, I can comfortably listen to music while working, which according to 86 per cent of my colleagues is very important and a definite perk.

With that said, the fact that this is a great place to work is no longer a secret. The cat is out of the bag with Edelman Canada’s recent recognition as ‘One of the 50 Most Engaged Workplaces™ in Canada’. I couldn’t agree more.

Trust me, you want to work here.

My third day at Edelman and we find out we have been recognized as one of the 50 Most Engaged Workplaces™ in Canada. Wow! I’m impressed.

A colleague who is a lot smarter than me once said, “the real difference between average companies and highly successful companies is that highly successful companies actually do the things they say they are going to do.”

Every company has a plan for employee engagement, but not many actually implement the ideas.

What I have noticed at Edelman is that what’s said is what’s actually done to engage everyone. From the ‘Foursies’ at Four, to Town Halls, to ‘Little Give’, to the Social Director, active engagement is everywhere. It’s impressive!

Most impressive is that employee engagement here isn’t a fad. It is founded on the belief that a more engaged employee (like Brittany) will make for a more powerful company, which will result in better work for our clients, which will create greater success for all involved — a notion with which I wholeheartedly agree.

Case Study: Social Marketing of ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’

Rise of the Planet of the Apes enjoyed a healthy standing at the box office, in part because of buzz drummed up by a series of YouTube videos of apes doing uncannily human-like things. The fourth video, of an ape firing an AK-47, has been watched more than 13 million times.

The business of monkeys.

How to Google-Proof Your Website

Google recently released an update for the algorithm it uses to deliver relevant search results, with “devastating” effects on websites that rely on search engines for almost all of their traffic. Fortunately there are a few simple things you can do to guard your website against future algorithm changes, including creating better, longer-form content and beefing up your social media footprint.

The weakest links.

Case Study: Measuring New York’s Social Media Program

Rachel Sterne, New York City’s chief digital officer, has been moving quickly to train the city’s myriad agencies to start communicating like it’s the 21st century. Several notable successes – the city’s 311 Twitter count now has more than 18,000 followers – begs the question: how can she determine what’s not working? With several YouTube channels collecting single-digit views, the city will be implementing a centralized metrics and reporting process: “Across the city, we will be able to compare, agency by agency, who is performing, and who is not–who is responding to requests, and who is not.”

The first constituent-relationship management program.

Drug Companies Close Facebook Pages as Walls Open

Facebook this week has been gradually opening the walls on pharmaceutical companies’ Facebook profiles to public commentors. Long closed due to regulatory concerns, the reversal has caused some pharmaceutical brands to close down their pages out of concern that “open walls may lead to the reporting of bad side effects, promotion of off-label use or inappropriate statements.”

Legal risks can kill a community.

How Many Readers Use Magazine’s 2-D Barcodes?

In last week’s edition we examined how QR codes are appearing in unusual places. But now we have cause to be skeptical about how effective 2D barcodes are. New research shows that the percentage of magazine readers who actually take out their phones and snap a picture of a QR code is in the single digits.

Maybe not yet ready for prime time.

Case Study: Gerber Hitches its Brand to YouTube Babies

Gerber may have a social media hit after re-purposing two wildly popular baby YouTube videos to promote its snacks for preschool-aged children. The spots are targeted at tech-savvy millennial moms and hope to drive new moms to Gerber’s Facebook page for future engagement.
