Erotica exists in many artful forms, most notably in the written word, sculpture, painting, and even ancient carvings. While some people may only think of erotica as the naughty books that are categorized under psychology and sexuality at their local bookstore, the genre actually expands far beyond that. Don’t get me wrong – I’m a big fan of erotica in book form, but there’s so much more to consider.

Besides the wonderful books, poems, and essays becoming more and more popular in current culture, there are so many more examples of erotica that most people are exposed to without even knowing it. Paintings of full figured nude women sprawled about amongst each other or eyeing up the painting’s onlooker from the renaissance, black and white photographs of scantily clad women and men with a combination of love and lust in their eyes from the early 20th century, carvings of sex in a light of more-than-mating from ancient Greece and Egypt, and D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover – these are all forms of erotica. Anyone that’s read the book Song of Songs or Song of Solomon in the Bible has some idea of just how far back and across cultures that erotica reaches.

All of these examples considered, building the description of the word is almost too easy. Any work of art (and yes I realize that ‘work of art’ is a highly subjective phrase in itself) that is sexual, but also sensual. It is an image or collection of words that evokes not only an immediate tingling in the genitals, but another response from deeper inside. Stories or images that include an element of sexuality, but also include an element of a relationship, of thought associated with the sexual act, and emotions attached to the people and actions involved.

This is where the blurry line between pornography and erotica comes into play. Can erotica be pornography? Yes. Can pornography be erotica? Yes. And there is no definite line in the sand that is correct for everyone. Let’s face it, no matter how we try and describe it, no matter how beautiful we make it there will always be people that see The “Birth of Venus” and Fear of Flying to be porn – but the majority of the population is at least willing to see some distinction.

The word ‘erotica’ is actually derived from the Greek word ‘eros’, which means desire. I believe this is where we can begin to derive some understandable differentiation between the two categories. The book I mentioned earlier, a legendary piece by D.H. Lawrence, was at its publishing considered pornography and to be highly inappropriate. It was however debated that since the story was not simply a graphic sexual depiction, but a depiction of an emotional romantic relationship with a well-described sexual component, that it was not pornography. Pornography is extremely graphic and in most forms is focused only on the sexual aspect, the gratification of feeling and touching leading up to getting off. Erotica, however, commonly focuses on the desire and emotions surrounding the sexual situation. These are not black and white rules for each, but at least majority guidelines.

When it comes down to it, the comparisons and histories and descriptions and opinions could easily go on for a few thousand words and still not fit everyone’s tastes. So I’m going to give you my definition. Erotica is any artistic expression that includes the sexual AND the sensual, that evokes the genitals, the heart, and the mind in combination, that makes you feel something toward or about sex that expands beyond your groin, that makes you feel lust instead of want, that makes you want to take the place of the character or figure you’re seeing, not just feel what they’re feeling physically. I hope my definition works for some of you as well, and has possibly opened your eyes to a genre you may have previously missed, or has allowed you to appreciate the forms of erotica that surround yourself and your culture from another angle.

And so as it stands, the ex and I are very good friends and we co-parent 100% of the time, and my boyfriend and I have been together for about a year now. Here’s the fun part: We all live together. The two men, me, and the two kids.
How does this work? How can we possibly stomach each other? How do toes not get stepped on?
Well, they do on occasion. It’s not perfect, but we do it, and we’re happy that we do it because there are plenty of benefits: the children live with both of their parents without having to go to separate houses, cost of living is shared, and we’re all in good company when we’re together.
It seems that whenever I mention the living situation to someone, their eyes get all big and they ask “and do the two of them get along?” And some people actually think that by moving the boyfriend in I’m being mean to my ex, making him suffer as he watches us frolic and close bedroom doors.
People tend to project though, and when they suggest things like this it just tells me that if they were in this situation they would be vindictive and cruel. I have no reason to be that way. When my ex and I decided to end things it was mutual and there was no hatred. Why spark up the fire now? Why when we still have our children to raise?
How we work is through a lot of respect and love and communication. There’s no reason to pick fights or talk about the things that crumbled the marriage. At the end of the day my ex is a very mellow person, and I tend to be as well. My boyfriend is fiery but in a fun way that keeps all of our energy levels up. Adding him to the mix actually helps out a lot in the sense that my ex and I had become bored over the years. He makes conversations, meals, and downtime very interesting with his boisterous interjections and random furniture jumps. (Nobody can get from the living room to the kitchen to deal with a pot that boiled over faster than he can.)
Having a third adult in the house gives everyone a break at some point. One more person to help with the children, one more person to help with cooking. If one person is sick, there are two more who can help the sick person and take care of all of the responsibilities of the house. With me being a stay at home mom, we’re still a two income household so money isn’t as tight and my ex was able to quit his night job and spend more time with his kids. Childcare is also a breeze now. If my boyfriend and I want to go out on a date, or my ex and I are doing birthday shopping for our boys, or the two of them want a guys night out, one of us is always home.
Our biggest concern is our children in all of this. My boyfriend would not be my boyfriend if he wasn’t good with my children. My kids happen to love him to death and he treats them as if they’re his own, even though he is very adamant that he is NOT their father and he’s just happy to be third in command as Step Dad. And when it comes to who my ex dates, there’s a screening process as well. Though he hasn’t been out much, there are certain things that he thinks about when it comes to dating material. Is she mature enough to accept that we live together even though we aren’t romantically involved? Could she be trusted around our children? Does she understand that the safety and well being of his children come first?
Believe me, I had to carefully consider the same things for my boyfriend when he first came onto the scene. It’s well worth it to do so because putting my kids through emotional stress is not something I’m a fan of. Not that every relationship is perfect, and not that the kids are involved in every intimate aspect of our relationships, but they do tend to pick up on a lot. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
It’s so much easier and healthier for kids to see their parents getting along with each other and their new partners instead of at each other’s throats like wild animals. When you have children, no matter what happened in the marriage, there is always a tie. We do what we need to do to make sure that we thrive so that our children can thrive as well.
And whenever there is trouble, we all sit down and take the time to talk it out. We let each other know that we appreciate one another, and that yes this is muddy and there is no instruction guide for this but we can do it. We’re all very capable and most importantly, we want to do it.
Our dynamics are completely unique. I’m not sure that I could write a guide on how to make a situation like this work for someone else because every relationship is different. My ex and my boyfriend happen to be best friends. I happen to be a better friend to my ex than a wife. We live together because it’s convenient and it’s good for the kids. How it works is really all in how you approach the situation.

Raven Riley is a porn star who had a profound effect on my life. I found out about her after dealing with a scammer who claimed to be her, fucked up in using her full name. At first I only knew this person as Raven. After finding out the full name and finding her website I contacted the people in charge and asked if Raven used this person’s email address. It took a while to get an answer and I eventually joined hoping to get an answer sooner. Little did I know that at the time she was inactive, but luckily for me would be coming back shortly, within the next month or so.

As I got to know her from her videos and cam shows I learned to care for her a lot. Using the email system on her site to send her jokes and ask her questions was especially great when it was like instant messaging. I have had problems with depression of some sort for years, but she made me feel better about myself. I did more in taking care of myself after talking to her than I ever had before meeting the real Raven Riley even if it was just on her site.

Listening to her laugh and talk with such a sweet voice was truly a joy. I told her I was a realist and while I understood her work was to project a fantasy, I didn’t want to live in that world. As far as I know she was honest and true with me and I know I was certainly honest with her. Her movie Succubus was the first porn film I was able to watch clear through and actually like it. Her videos were the first where I came to like if not love all of them. The reason is because with so many things I hate about porn and while she had some of those things. Her videos weren’t about her being humiliated. When she was with the guy from her videos, she would give and take control. Even in her bondage video she did the same thing and I feel remained respectable.

I and some others have told her that even if she didn’t take off her clothes we would still watch her cam shows and for me, that holds true today. She has a great body and a great personality and that is why I would follow her to any site she went to. But recently I finally got word that she has left that world behind. Her site ravenriley.com is still running but she has nothing to do with it. It is run by her former boss Tom aka 3xTom as are her myspace and twitter profiles. You can subscribe to her site for around $30 a month as I recall and watch her old cam shows and videos to understand why I think she is a goddess. There are those of us that will miss her. Some of them my friends from her site. While I would love to see her return in any fashion to the net or even show business, meaning not porn. I do not expect her to do so. Having witnessed how fucked up people can be I can understand her wanting out.

I recall one guy who hacked her site and interrupted her cam show. Saying she was past her prime which I doubt she has reached. I do not know what he hoped to accomplish by doing what he did. But she managed to trick him by leaving for a bit and then coming back and finishing the show. One jackass I knew and tried to reason with, had no interest but in spreading poison about her. Claiming she was scamming people and prostituting herself to old men and I can’t even remember the rest of the shit he was saying. He was such a bad liar that he contradicted himself in the comments area of this one contest on the net.

Another thing that I would bet would make life hard for her is dealing with the constant sexual demands of the viewers. While she encouraged this behavior, I think it was to project the fantasy. I am sure that having people talk the way they did on the cam shows would still affect her personal life. I chose to talk to her with respect at all times. If she requested feed back or ideas I would give it. I came up with some ideas purely as jokes and made it obvious and she responded with a hahaha or lol. One time her B-day was coming up and I did the only thing I kind of regret. I got her a thing from her wish list which was a butterfly vibrating strap on dildo/vibrating panty thing. I just dig strap ons. I should have gotten her these roller blades she wanted instead but I let my dick do the thinking. What I don’t regret is refusing to accept a gift in return. I thought it fucked up to give bribes to get B-day presents and to show true friend ship I told her just be happy with the gift and I will be happy too.

I will continue one thing and that is to fuck with people who use her pictures and claim to be her to steal money from others. I would love one day to meet her and tell her thanks for being such an inspiration to so many. I hope she reads this article/blog entry and knows she always has a friend in me. I would love to maintain contact with her, but I doubt that will happen. If by chance you Raven Riley do read this and wouldn’t mind contacting me and I do have ways of proving if you are real or not. So don’t fuck with me. I don’t take well to fakers. The bottom line is regardless of one's career choice these individuals are often type casted or stereotyped into being less than human with all the negative stigma. DG: Who are some of your favorite starlets to work with? Is there anyone unchartered or unexplored you’d like to work with? Any come to mind that you’d just as easily rather forget?

LW: (laughs) You know what I’ve made it a point of enjoying every moment in this industry there are very few girls out there that I would tell you that man…I would rather forget the experience I had with them. So I don’t have any war stories of girls storming off set. We really were the good guys. We really did focus on making people comfortable. They never had any reason nor did they ever have any cause. Now did I have any favorites? Yeah I like this girl she worked with Digital Playground Riley Steele. I think she’s amazing I just love her. Of course I love Jenna Haze. I’ve known her since the moment she came into the industry. She used to date my camera man. I just love her. Sunny Leone, she’s pretty hot. Jessica Drake she really is our princess at this point. I think she is the hottest girl in porn. Do you like Jessica? Do you know Jessica Drake?

DG: Yes, yes I know her well.

LW: We shot her in internal affairs, which is an award winning cream pie series that I produced.

DG: Yes I’m aware of that series, yes.

LW: Yeah, she and Evan they were a couple at that point; did such an amazing scene for me I was just blown away. So if you ever get a moment and you’re so inspired check that video out. Jessica Drake before she had her boob job, before the industry turned her into the star that she is today. This was when she first walked through the door.

DG: Dually noted. I’ll definitely check that out.

LW: Wonderful.

DG: What kind of starlet is most in demand today? Is it still the big boobed? The blonde? The MILFs? Is it talent with actual acting ability? Perhaps it is those who transcend the most enthusiasm in their scenes?

LW: Well for me the enthusiasm was always the most aspect for me in a starlet. Today as compared to when I first came into the industry when a porn star walked into a room back in the early days, you immediately knew who she was. Because of breast augmentations, big hair, lots of make up, the porn star—you know typical hooker outfit. Today the girls are much more refined, much more natural, much more at ease with who they are and what they’re all about. So I’m often sitting in a room with girls today that are big stars and I don’t get that same sense of recognition who they have to be and all that. I think it’s a really positive thing. Do you follow what I’m trying to say?

DG: Sure they just don’t really seem to carry the same kind of stereotype that they were once before

LW: Yeah that’s part of it, but its almost like they don’t put on as much make up. They are not as desperate to be someone aside from who they really are.

DG: I guess there’s a lot more opportunity for them to show a natural side of themselves. I can see more of a trend in just the regular entertainment industry in itself for reality television, the more real the more appeal to a larger audience in itself.

LW: I think though in the sexual scenarios, really if you want to be authentic, if you want to really get to your audience, you have to have it in your heart ahead of time you can’t come in and—you can act your way through a lot of dialogue and scenes leading up to the sex. But if your heart isn’t in your work it shows through in your performance.

That was always really what I was looking for in girls. I shot so many, hot, hot young sexy starlets because I wasn’t just looking for the most beautiful girl. I was looking for the girl who inside was really driven to do this. You knew that they were naturals.

DG: Well they held a passion for it to. Essentially if you were just faking it kind of shows in the scene.

LW: Well its like Alexandra Silk, who is my lady today. She and I have a really wonderful and rich sexual lifestyle. She never got her breasts done and she always kept that natural appeal to her and throughout her entire career. And I applaud her for that. She, to me was always one of the hottest girls in the biz.

DG: Absolutely. And I think the necessity or the demand for a girl in the business who goes out and gets augmentations simply isn’t the same as it was even say ten years ago.

LW: Yeah there was a lot of pressure on girls back then. I have to tell you twenty years ago I was married to another star named Arianna. And Arianna started off as a stripper in New Jersey go-go bars. The week after she got her breasts done every night she made twice as much money as she ever made before. So she doubled her money when she went in and got breast augmentation and that was the mentality years ago. Today I think people have more of a realistic expectation and they’re a little less into the big boobs. I’ve never really liked them.

DG: I can definitely relate. We’ve just scratched the surface on genres of porn. Of course we have Gonzo, Cream pies, (which I know you’re personally intimate with) as well as teen volumes, MILF titles, Femme Dom among many others. What is the hottest theme in adult video right now?

LW: Well you know its funny we’ve come full circle to today. Fetish is what’s really hot on the internet. We’ve gone through all the genres of sex. We’ve been kind of hyper saturated with everything that’s been out there. And now as fetish is started to emerge particularly in HD I’m finding a lot of really talented people that are starting to come out. And fetish videos and internet sites that are out there really, really do them well. To tell you the truth its where my roots are in, that’s where I’m going to go back today.

DG: Porn has evolved with leaps and bounds. From the days of reel to reel projection to 8mm, from video to DVD then Blue Ray.—Video on Demand and of course internet content. Do you think Adult entertainment is too saturated on the net? What do you see as the next big medium or attraction?

LW: I think that there is a lot of information on the internet that doesn’t need to be there. Some of its porn, some of its other; I mean just because something that comes out on the internet does not mean that it in itself mean that its good. There’s a lot of trash out there. There is a lot of product that was created by people that really didn’t know what they were doing and its out there we all have to accept it but do I think that there is too much great porn on the internet? I think there’s never enough great porn on the internet. There’s a lot of it out there, yet there is some many different varieties, people’s tastes that we have to appeal to. One guy likes fat women, another guy likes skinny women. One guy likes men another guy likes women; all those people and everything in between need to be catered to and I don’t think anybody should be left out. So in new and exciting fetishes develop new and artistic, creative ways of appealing to that and it will always be out there. Its wonderful each tml file will have a whole new way of watching video on the internet where you won’t have to launch a third party player. Video will just play natively in your internet browser. You follow what I mean? So you won’t have to go onto you tube or to launch windows media player it will just play right in your browser. I think people are really going to start contributing on a lot of different levels.

DG: How does Fallen Angel differ from other studios and product available?

LW: Internal affairs our award winning cream pie series, those are the only videos we produced without condoms. They didn’t sell anymore than the one’s with condoms. So it’s kind of a weird scenario. But we’ve always tried to be sex positive with Fallen Angel. I mean we get crazy, we have fun. We shot a series at one point called Sex Across America where we ran all over the country shooting scenes around all the landmarks and things of that nature. It was always about having fun. Its about enjoying sex, teaching other people that it can be fun and open and just care free. And it still safe at the same time.
