A role has arisen for a Research Assistant to join the Emerging Pathogens vaccine group under the direction of Professor Teresa Lambe. The Research Assistant will work to delineate the immune response towards Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and a naturally occurring and closely related disease caused by a veterinary-specific nairovirus of sheep and goats (Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV)) in order to aid effective vaccine design. The successful applicant will be responsible for carrying out immune profiling of samples following both natural exposure as well as controlled infection with nairoviruses. You will also be responsible for performing research work to a high standard including ELISPOT, ELISA, flow cytometry and other functional assays. Participate in research programmes of preclinical vaccine development. Analyse data and present them to the Senior Immunologist and wider group.

The successful applicant will have a keen attention to detail and the ability to carry out experimental work carefully and safely demonstrating good laboratory practice. The ability to research complex issues and interpret, analyse, and present scientific data is also essential, as well as being technically competent and capable of working independently in the laboratory. The role requires the applicant to have a first class degree or equivalent in a relevant biological subject as well as some experience in immunology testing and preferably vaccine development.

Vaccines are one of the world’s most important public health achievements, yet their life saving potential has not been realised for many emerging epidemic threats including CCHFv. Emerging pathogen outbreaks can disproportionately affect low-income countries, where the risks and needs are often greatest, putting immense pressure on already fragile health systems and economies. Delineating the protective immune response post-infection will directly inform vaccine design against these impactful diseases.

Perform various tasks including ELISPOT, ELISA, flow cytometry and other functional assays as well as perform research in cellular biology including immunofluorescence and sterile cell culture methodologies.

The role requires the applicant to have a first class degree or equivalent in a relevant biological subject as well as some experience in immunology testing and preferably vaccine development. The successful applicant will have the ability to carry out experimental work carefully and safely demonstrating good laboratory practice. The ability to research complex issues and interpret, analyse, and present scientific data is also essential, as well as being technically competent and capable of working independently in the laboratory.

Recently, the Jenner Institute in partnership with Janssen Vaccines, has secured funding from the Coalition of Epidemic Preparedness (CEPI: http://cepi.net/) to continue development of vaccines against three emerging pathogens: Middle Eastern respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus, Nipah virus and Lassa virus.

Vaccines are one of the world’s most important public health achievements, yet their life-saving potential has not been realised for many emerging epidemic threats. Emerging pathogen outbreaks disproportionately affect low-income countries, where the risks and needs are often greatest, putting immense pressure on already fragile health systems and economies.

The Jenner institute has produced vaccines against malaria, HIV, tuberculosis and influenza, all of which are in clinical development. In recent years there has been a strong interest in the development of vaccines against emerging pathogens such as the MERS and Nipah and Lassa viruses.

As you know, the International Conference on Urban Pests (ICUP) brings together those with a professional interest in urban pests. Every three years, participants from academia, industry, government and professional pest control, come from all over the world to meet at the ICUP and share research and ideas.

In this 10th edition that we celebrate in 2020, the Spanish Organizing Committee in charge of the Conference will maintain the classical main topics but introduce several new features related to ICUP’s spirit and aims. In the 10th ICUP Conference the initials of the organization will be relevant each day of the meeting.

ICUP: "I" day 29th June

"I" means "International" that in terms of Pest Management we can interpret as "No borders" situation to fight against pests. Globalization is one of the most relevant drivers of new and old pest invasions worldwide. The massive and quick movement of people and goods all over the world has facilitated the expansion of arthropod, mammal and bird pests. Once established in urban environments they cause economic, health and structural damage. A global view of pest processes is needed since new harmful organisms can arrive to cities at any moment due to globalization and climate change. Consequently, networking of pest management professionals and awareness of pest situations are mandatory preventive measures for any city. During the "I" day we will focus the Plenary Session on this topic of "Globalization and Pest Management".

ICUP: "U" day 30th June

"U" means "Urban", which is our working landscape. The urban concept is strongly dynamic and has also notably changed in the last 100 years. Different types of urbanization processes and diverse urban plans can influence pest problems. Consequently, architects and other professionals directly involved in urban planning are key partners for pest managers. Moreover, urbanization has also a collateral impact on pest behavior. Cities are artificial environments that can cause changes in the ethology and reproduction of "urban fauna". Understanding these factors and changes is crucial to design and implement efficient urban pest management programs, especially in relation to urban disease vectors such as mosquitoes, sandflies and rodents. All these aspects will be discussed in the Plenary Session of this day (the “U” day) of the Conference.

ICUP: "P" day 1st July

"P" means "Pests", which is our key concept. Pest is a circumstantial, arbitrary and anthropocentric concept. The determination of tolerance and economic impact thresholds to make decisions on pest management is not easy and varies depending on different cities and social, cultural and legal factors. Moreover, new pests or "urban fauna" are emerging in different parts of the world. Some traditionally non-urban animals like parrots, wild boars, scorpions and snakes, are increasing their impact in cities worldwide. These topics will be discussed during the "P" day, of the Conference.

ICUP: "C" Conference

The last initial is "C" which correspond the "Conference". The Conference is the space we have to discuss "I", "U" and "P". It is the forum for the exchange of technical and scientific ideas the enhancement of communication and cooperation among all those professionals working with urban pests worldwide.

from 23 to 24 March 2020

After twenty years of successful collaboration of the mosquito control professionals of Europe, the European Mosquito Control Association (EMCA) will hold its Xth Workshop in Speyer, Germany , from 23 to 24 March 2020 entitled «EMCA — 20 years together against mosquitoes - which challenges for the next 20 years?». Our goal for this year“s workshop is to highlight the achievements of the association during the last twenty years and to elaborate together suggestions for future milestones. In this context there will be five subjects to which contributions can be made and in which active discussion will take place:

Experiences on mosquito control programs in Europe
Surveillance and management of invasive species
Mosquito-Borne Diseases in Europe
EU regulation on biocides
New challenges in Mosquito Control

Dear Colleagues,

The Infravec2 EU funded Consortium* wishes the Vector Biology Research Community a happy New Year and requests your input to help prepare a potential new Advanced Community research infrastructure project under the EU Horizon Europe framework, beginning in 2022. Please complete a short survey about your research needs by the end of the month by clicking the following link https://tinyurl.com/InfravecCommunitySurvey.

The primary purpose of Infravec2 is to provide access to products and services from the network of consortium facilities, funded by the EU and without charge to the worldwide vector research community. Access to these specialized resources enables vector researchers and companies to carry out experiments beyond their current capacities. Products and services can be requested from the Infravec2 online catalogue. In addition, Infravec2 engages in development of new tools and technologies for vector research and control.

This survey proposes possible new products and services, as well as strategic needs and gaps in vector biology and control. We would like to solicit feedback from the vector biology community. Your particular needs and opinions will have strong impact on how the project will be structured, as this integrated research infrastructure needs to be tightly tailored to, and inspired by real community needs. Please, take a few minutes to fill in a short questionnaire (<15 minutes) to help us mobilize necessary resources for the future of our community.

Institut Pasteur launches a new session of the MOOC Medical Entomology#2, a free online course on insect and tick vectors and transmission of pathogens.

The MOOC "Medical entomology" will teach the role of vectors in the functioning of ecosystems and how to interrupt the vector transmission chain. It is organized from an entomological perspective, with each session devoted to a particular taxonomic group of insects and ticks.

The MOOC is dedicated to students in biological or medical sciences, public health advisors (human and animal health), stakeholders in vector control, researchers and NGO members.

It will be delivered by a team of experts from the Institut Pasteur, IRD and other well-known scientific institutions. It is organized in 6 weeks of 3-6 sequences. Each sequence is composed of a 10 minutes video and a multiple choice test to help students check their understanding. A certificate attesting successful completion of the course will be delivered. The videos are in English subtitled in French and English.

The Institut Pasteur, the CNAM and IRD co-produce this MOOC on the FUN platform. It is co-directed by Anna-Bella Failloux, Head of the Laboratory “Arboviruses and Insect Vectors”, Institut Pasteur, and Vincent Robert, senior researcher at the MIVEGEC unit, French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD).

VII Parasitology Summer Course (ParSCo) June 2019, Bari, Italy

We are pleased to announce the seventh edition of the Parasitology Summer Course (VII ParSCo) organized by the Parasitology Unit of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Bari (Italy), with the support of the European Veterinary Parasitology College (EVPC) and of Parasites & Vectors. Over the last years, more than 80 attendees from all continents have attended the ParSCo. (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpZ6FV9KQVI&feature=youtu.be) The ParSCo is an intense, one-week long course for parasitologists and post-graduate students working in the field of veterinary parasitology. This course is mostly focused on practical activities, with theoretical lectures making up less than 40% of the whole program. The program includes oral lectures and practical activities on collection, identification and diagnosis of parasites such as Leishmania infantum, sand flies (e.g., Phlebotomus perfiliewi), ticks (e.g., Ixodes ricinus and Rhipicephalus turanicus), cestodes, metastrongyloids of felids, Trichinella and eyeworms (Thelazia callipaeda). Participants will also attend clinical examinations of cattle and other domestic animals and sample collection from dogs for the diagnosis of arthropod-borne diseases. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in bird trapping sessions and tick collection from birds as well as necropsies of wild cats and small ruminants for the detection of lungworms, cestodes and metacestodes.

InnovSur forum aims to review and discuss the gaps and needs in next generation of health surveillance: innovations in animal, human and plants health surveillance but also at the interface (integrated surveillance).

In most region of the world farming systems aim to ensure food security but also poorest communities’ livelihood. Issues in disease control strategies and husbandry practices can result in disease introduction and endemic situations and directly pose a threat for the farmer’s livelihood. Early detection and control of animal diseases through efficient surveillance system is critical to prevent such issue but also emergence and re-emergence of human pathogens adapted from animals.

Most health policies rely on data from national health surveillance systems which efficacy can vary greatly between countries and according to the type of diseases. Socio-economic, political and cultural factors scan affect the performances of such systems. In order to ensure quality and reliability of the data provided, disease surveillance systems should be adapted to the country specific socio-economic and cultural context but should also be evaluated and optimized according to the dynamics of the sanitary situation.

Objectives of the Forum

Highlight the innovations in terms of health surveillance design and evaluation.
> Review the needs for translational research to promote innovation uptake.
> Brainstorm on the challenges behind integrated health surveillance.
> Promotes innovative approches to strenghten private-public partnership related to surveillance activities.

> A technical workshop report on gaps and needs in health surveillance innovations.
> A policy brief presenting recommendations from forum brainstorming.
> Dissemination and advocacy of forum outputs with relevant stakeholders, policy makers and donors.
