I am taking some time to experiment making monotype prints using acrylic paint. All three of these were done with Golden Open acrylic paints. The first was printed on my favorite paper, Rives BFK. The other two were printed on Arches 88.

Columbus artist Edith Loechler Dean will present a collection of oil paintings and monotypes in an exhibition titled "Repetitions and Variations" from August 31, 2015 through October 30, 2015. The exhibition includes a series of small oil paintings created "en plein air" and larger oil paintings and monotypes created in the studio. An opening reception in Ms. Dean's honor will be held on Friday, September 11, 2015 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at The Ohio State University Faculty Club. Edie Dean's formal training has focused both on painting and print-making and she has worked extensively in both mediums over the years. A trip to the Adirondacks awakened in her an interest in painting on site or "en plein air." She has painted many small paintings in all weather conditions in a French tradition called "pochades" or "small sketches." The current exhibition includes thematic explorations of a variety of landscapes and natural settings produced in both oil on panel and monotype on paper. Whether capturing the Ohio prairie through the seasons or the ethereal moods of the Adirondack lakes and mountain s in moonlight, Dean's work allows the viewer to connect with nature in the most intimate way. About her work, Dean states "I want to convey what I get when looking at a landscape or a figure - its atmosphere, the mood, the color, the essence. Exact truth isn't so important, but the truth of expression, what I perceived, that is very important. What were the colors, was it hot, was it exciting and energetic, was it damp, was it . . . to me it is all about the communication with the viewer along with the side game of entertaining myself with new challenges."

A graduate of The Ohio State University, with Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees, Edith Loechler Dean has exhibited in numerous invitational, juried and solo exhibitions through the years. Her work can be seen in many public collections including museums, corporate offices and universities, as well as in private collections in the United States. Ms. Deanis currently a member of the Ohio Plein Air Society and The Phoenix Rising Printmaking Cooperative. Her work may be seen at Sharon Weiss Gallery in the Short North and at Pennington Custom Art Service and Turner Studio & Gallery, both in Clintonville.

Grill Man - Back to Normal

For those who do not know, my husband Frank fell from a ladder in December of this past year. We now say he was shooting the “Ladder Luge”. He is recovering, but is currently using a wheel chair to get around.

Rehab is coming along and great progress is being made. New muscles are “firing” and strength is being recovered. But I want more normal and Frank participating actively in life. The man needs some of his old jobs back. And you all know men are supposed to do the grilling. Frank’s grilled salmon was beyond compare! The old grill is in a location Frank can't reach easily. I tried being the grill master, but it just isn't in my bones. So, I decided to fix the problem and went out and found a portable grill that can sit on our deck where he can reach it.

And voila, grill-man is back to work!!!

His first grill job was local yellow squash served with fresh Ohio blueberries.
Yum! Looks good too.

Farming - If I was a farmer...

I am not a farmer. I am not a gardener. Look. You can tell by this photo. This is the product of my summer garden. I bought tomato plants, lots of heirloom plants. I was hopeful. I spent $$$$$ (way too many) for plants and the result…approximately 10 cherry tomatoes. They were good.

I have a ground hog and chipmunks, but some how, it can’t all be their fault. Next year I am going to take my tomato money and spend it at the farmers market.

Pray for rain and perfect weather, but shop local and eat well. No gardens.

If I was a farmer, I would weigh a svelte 105 pounds, but I wouldn’t be rich.

Very Fine Work and With A Twinkle In His Eye

Friday, I went to the opening of Then and Now, 1943 -2011 an exhibition of Sidney Chafetz's artwork at the Sherrie Gallery. At 89 Sid still has a twinkle in his eye and he continues to amaze with his output of artwork. He is, as he said, "Still raising Cain!"

The treat of the evening was looking at the recovered works from the forties.
The man can draw, but we knew that. I have been telling artist friends if you want to see it all: good composition, good value, interesting marks and above all art, and art that has something to say, GO SEE THIS EXHBIT.

I consider myself lucky to have had and still have Sid as one of my teachers and a dear friend.

My New Mantra, Eating And Painting Local!

My new mantra is "Eating and Painting Local" and I did just that today. I went to the Fabulous Short North for a painting session early this morning. I broke for lunch and headed to one of my favorites, TASI's located in Pearl Alley of all places. They source their food locally, but....The expresso beans for my Latte were from Italy. Our server was very interested in knowing how it was.

I got a good start on a painting and am hoping the weather will be good next weekend so I can finish.

Italy In My Own Back Yard

My friend Debra is in Italy having fun painting, eating and making ceramics. I am enjoying her blog, so.....

This morning I went to the Worthington Farmer's Market because it is peach time and I needed to have some peaches. I came home with way more food then we'll ever eat. Tomatoes, strawberries, blackberries, and my favorite, peaches!! I fixed breakfast and was eating on the deck. Inspiration, I'll blog my beautiful local Ohio food - peaches in yogurt, toast and coffee in an exquisite china cup. Well, the photos didn't work out exactly as I hoped, but here are the remains of the yummy toast and coffee.

The jam is by "Sweet Things", and is brandied blackberry. The owner of "Sweet Things" is local and makes the most wonderful jams. I don't have a most favorite yet. I am still tasting. I do love the chili cherry and the brandied blackberry.

Who Could Pass Up The Opportunity

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to go back to school and use the "big presses". I renewed some old friendships, talked shop and got waited on hand and foot by a new crew of graduate students at OSU. What a fun, but exhausting day. And I created some images I like from a small nocturne that was done in upstate New York.

After a long, long stretch of oil painting it is invigorating to change size and media.

This is 12" x 12" on Rives BFK. No official title yet.

Here is a Mono Print for Spring. It is heavy on the R & F Pigment Sticks. These color sticks are almost pure color and a dream to work with. This print is approximately 3" x 4", printed on Hosho paper, a very fine Japanese paper, soft and translucent.

April 1st - Opening Day

Well, it’s Opening Day 2011. “Opening Day” of what? Are you kidding me? Baseball, of course!

My sister is reading this book called Baseball Eccentrics by Bill "Spaceman" Lee. I’m from Boston, so I was always a fan of the “Spaceman,” who pitched for the Boston Red Sox in the 1970s. When I think of Bill Lee, I can’t help but think of his Eephus pitch, which sometimes worked and… Well, sometimes…

Bill was once pitching against the Chicago White Sox, when it started to rain. In fact, it was a torrential rain, and Bill decided that his Eephus pitch might be just the ticket under those conditions.

Eephus pitch? What the heck is an Eephus pitch? The Eephus pitch is a really slow (50mph), high-arching pitch that seems to fall out of the sky. It catches major league hitters off-guard, because they’re used to pitches that curve very little and typically rip at them at about 90mph.

On this day in Chicago, the Spaceman decided that his Eephus would not only be unexpected, but also it would be drop out of the sky, just like that rain. Near the end of the game, Lee threw 14 straight Eephus pitches. Turns out that in the process he managed to piss off both the manager of the White Sox, Chuck Tanner, and also his own manager, Eddie Kasko. Thinking that Lee should be doing a better job of mixing up his pitches, Kasko stepped up to the top of the Red Sox dugout and yelled out, "You can't throw that many (of the same pitches) all in a row?” At the same time, Tanner, the White Sox manager, stepped to the top of the White Sox dugout and called out, "You son of a bitch, quit showing up my hitters!”

Only Bill Lee could have pissed off both the manager of the opposing team, as well as HIS OWN MANAGER at the same time.

But it had worked. Lee got a standing ovation at the end of a complete game shutout against the White Sox, in which he threw nothing but his slow Eephus pitch over the last three innings.

The "Eephus" pitch was invented by Rip Sewell when playing for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1940s. Nobody knows where the term “Eephus” comes from, but it sure is suspicious that the Hebrew word for “nothing” is "efes." According to Pittsburgh manager, Frankie Frisch, the pitch was named by outfielder Maurice Van Robays, who said, "Eephus ain't nothin’, and that's a nothin pitch.”

But the Eephus pitch was not always kind to Bill Lee. In the 1975 World Series, the Boston Red Sox were opposed by the Cinncinati Reds. It remains one of the most exciting World Series ever played. The series was tied three games to three, when Bill Lee started the 7th game for the Red Sox. The Spaceman was looking good over the first five innings, as he was pitching a shutout and the Red Sox were ahead 3-0, when he faced the Reds slugger Tony Perez. Lee had faced Perez two times previously and had struck him out both times on an Eephus pitch. But in the sixth inning, Lee went to the well one too many times; Perez slammed an 0-2 Eephus pitch over the left field wall for a two-run homer, which started the Reds’ comeback. Cincinnati eventually won that 7th game 4-3, and the Reds, and not Bill Lee’s Red Sox, won the 1975 World Series.

To paraphrase one great philosopher: “Live by the Eephus pitch, die by the Eephus pitch.”

Well, it’s Opening Day 2011, so why am I writing about an old, has-been like Bill Lee? Well, first, I’m reading this book that one of younger sisters Edie showed me. (Remember?) But also… Bill Lee threw this Eephus pitch in a game with a torrential rainstorm. You see, my other sister doesn’t believe in climate change which is starting to cause dramatic increases in precipitation and… But that’ll have to wait for another blog.

Yes, Melissa there will be Olive Bread.

This has only taken, oh say, about 35 years. Now I didn't work on it daily and some decades I didn't even try. This is a HUGE success. I have to thank my husband for always being an excited and willing participant in my crazy adventures (he just admonished me to save him a little bread for when he gets home). And I should thank our now missing friend, Dan Johnson, who was there for the first attempt when we killed the yeast with hot water and then pummeled the dough to death with "karate" kneading. And a "wink" goes to another unnamed friend who was so "I don't know what" that he sat in front of his oven and watched a loaf of bread rise "a la" an Andy Warhol film - if you don't know Warhol's films they are liking watching bread rise.

And a BIG thanks to Jim Lahey author of the book My Bread who made this success possible. Where was this book 30 years ago?????

Olive Bread - Something Happened!!!

My sister-in-law got me hooked on olive bread from a bakery in Brookline MA. I can't find anything that compares with it in my hometown. So... I found a book, Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day and it promised good bread with no kneading. I have never been very good at “yeast things"! And this book had a recipe for Olive Bread.

I started last night, making do with the ingredients we had in the house. My husband brought home olives. I know I asked for pitted, but I got beautiful Kalamata olives with pits in. It turns out the bin was miss marked. A cherry pitter seems to work with olives, but not what I wanted to do first thing in the morning. And I shot a lots of pits clear into the family room. I rolled out the bread to the ½ inch thickness per the instructions. I put the olives all over the dough and rolled it back up just like the directions said. Then you are supposed to form the dough into a ball. My ball of dough wasn't right. I knew it wasn't right. Parts of it didn't want to stick to other parts of it. Some of the olives tried to pop out of the dough. There were very specific directions on how to do the ball, very specific. Personally I need pictures. My husband was asleep. He could have figured it out. Oh well, I proceeded.

Next the loaf goes into the oven. I was using an old clay deep-dish pizza pan. You are supposed to slide the bread onto the stone and then pour hot water into a pan that is under the bread and shut the oven door really fast. Well the thermometer fell down and you can't slide a piece of dough onto a pie plate. I did the best I could.

Next I let it bake for 35 minutes per the directions. Of course when the time was up, I pulled it out and had to cut into it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't what you get in a bakery. I let it cool. When I did cut into the bread further, I found all the olives in a nice long row.... Oh, and did I mention the hot steam cracked the deep dish pie plate right in half.

Like I said, something happened!!
