Teams of four S5/S6 pupils have been working on sophisticated engineering projects with local companies as part of the EES programme run by the Engineering Development Trust (EDT).  The culmination of their projects is a “Celebration and Assessment Day” where the teams were assessed and presented with certificates acknowledging their success in the programme.

Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh, who partnered The University of Edinburgh, were presented with the EES Trophy and a cheque for £250 as the ‘Overall Winning Team’ for their outstanding project results. Their project set for them by the university, was to develop a system to control and receive feedback from a bionic hand and to utilise and design an interface that will interact with the human body.

Dr Andrew Firth, Schools Liaison Officer at the University of Edinburgh mentored the team and commented “The team from Merchiston deserve the highest praise for their work. We presented them with a very challenging project and to produce a working prototype, as they have, is exceptional. This is engineering at its very best.”

Trinity High School, Renfrew, partnered with Rolls-Royce plc won the runner-up award of £100, donated by Salesjigsaw and presented by George Foster.

Companies supporting the schools and providing the projects were Aggreko Manufacturing, BOC Ltd, ClydeUnion Pumps, Coherent Scotland, Doosan Power Systems, EDF Energy, Heriot-Watt University, Howden, Rolls-Royce plc, Selex Galileo, University of Edinburgh and University of Strathclyde.

Peter Jamieson, Senior Principal Engineer at Garrad Hassan was one of the assessors at the event and commented,”It was refreshing and inspiring to see what all these young potential engineers had been up to and I felt privileged to have been involved “.

The Engineering Education Scheme enables a team of students to work on an engineering project devised by their partner company. The project will be of real value to the company and the student engineers have the experience of tackling the project in an industry environment. The project takes place over 6 months and involves over 100 hours of work per student, including a 2 day period of research and development at a local university.
The Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde supported the EES in Scotland by hosting the Launch, Workshop and CAD events.

 Duncan McSporran Director of the Engineering Development Trust Scotland said, “The quality of the school teams presenting shows the strength of the scheme. It has a defining role in enabling students to take the step from engineering as an interesting idea to a firm career option.  The participating companies keep their eyes open for talented students and more than a few EES students have finished up working with the company they partnered on their EES project.”

All of our coaches are qualified to Scottish Gymnastics standards and have undergone enhanced Criminal Records Bureau checks and are dedicated to teaching gymnastics, wanting to help each child fulfil their potential as gymnasts.

The main part of out Club is training in Woman’s Artistic Gymnastics, which means we train to compete in four piece competitions, which include Floor, Vault, Bars and Beam. We compete in Scottish Gymnastics Competitions and need to train at least 10 hours a week to enable us to be ready for competitions.

Our development classes will enable gymnasts at an early age to work on improving their strength, flexibility and skills.  It gives them the opportunity to train on all four pieces of apparatus, and will prepare them well if they progress into the main Club.  They train between 2 and 4 hours a week. They also do get the opportunity to compete in development competitions.

We are also in the process of starting recreational classes; these will be a good introduction to gymnastics and will enable your child to learn basic gymnastics skills. Hopefully if they enjoy this they may want to move on to our development class.

Our display group, this is an invitation class as you are required to have gymnastics skills to participate, this is a fun class where they perform choreographed gymnastics to music,  and we participate in gymnastic festivals to show  everyone our routines.

Moving on to Novice – these lessons are split usually into an hour schooling followed by half hour jumping allowing you to improve both your flatwork skills and your jumping.  The jumping now will be progressing to being able to hire to compete in some of our home shows.

What is it? 
Our Little Ninjas work on one ‘Ninja Skill’ per week over an eight week period. We then spend a further two weeks working on ‘Safety Skills’ for example, Stranger = Danger, Anti Bullying, Fire Safety, Water Safety. Once the Little Ninja has completed their Ninja and Safety Skills they are allowed to sit their belt grading. In between the gradings your child can enjoy going for ’Merit Badges’. These are sewn on badges that your child has to perfect & perform various techniques & skills to receive.

Kids aged  4-8 and young Children aged 9-13 years old

What will I learn?
The Little Ninja Curriculum has special drills that are used to develop each skill. In the ninjas eyes there drills are more like games, so they are fun to do. The main difference in this programme is we understand there is a difference between what a young adult can learn and what a young child can learn in terms of martial arts. We offer a programme from the United States which is tailored for young children, it’s not an adult’s curriculum shrunken down for children.

We’ll start off with bread-making - no bread machines here – followed by a mix of demonstrations, tasting sessions and lots and lots of hands-on action throughout the day. Each child will spend the rest of the morning preparing their own three course lunch which they will sit down to enjoy. The afternoon will focus on home baking – a range of cookies, cakes and biscuits – the results of which they will be able to take home to share with their family.

Throughout the day children will learn more about the ingredients they are using, how they are produced, where they come from and how else they can use them in their cooking.

They will have the chance to try out new flavours and will be encouraged to be as creative as they want with the food they are preparing. They will be using fresh ingredients and making as much as possible from scratch.
