Progress May Be Stalled But Rving Still the Name of the Game

Edith, Eugene, and I may be at a standstill but it is only a temporary stall and we shall be making some forward progress in the New Year.

2011 was not quite the Year of RVing we planned but such is life. . .

. . .we roll with the punches and recognize our own lack of the gumption needed to make things happen.

We can make no promises as to what lies ahead but we each know our own determination to get RVing is still as strong as ever and the courage to get things done is providing us with the strength and will needed to move our dreams forward and make them our reality.

We know we'll get to where we want to be eventually but know we
just have to enjoy the time it takes for us to get there.

Edith and Eugene Have Returned

Edith and Eugene have returned well not actually as they haven't gone anywhere. They've decided to go on hiatus until we're actually in the RV or much closer to RVing than we are today.

Edith and Eugene decided to pack themselves away and sort of hibernate until the RV is up and ready for us to move into and get onto the highway with. They are tired of waiting and I can't say I blame them as so am I but patience is a must in these situations as rushing the process will get us nowhere. But let it be known that progress is being made but only at a snail's pace.

Please though do stop by on occasion as I will be posting as regularly as I can about the slow progress we, well I am making in getting the RV ready for our much delayed desire of departure.

Things Appear to be at Work Under the Surface

It's hard for me to explain this feeling I have but the best way I know is to just say it and that is that I have this feeling that something good is going on in my life below the surface and I have no idea what it is.

I feel like I'm going to be living, traveling, and working in my RV rather soon. I cannot quite explain it but as I work through this day, "something is up" in the universe but I cannot quite put my finger on it. Rather weird I know but that's what's going on in my life at the moment.

Edith and Eugene have not returned from wherever it is they are, haven't heard a peep from them, not a call, email, or even a postcard. I hope they are all right out there.

I'm not sure if I wrote this before but I feel like me, the present me is just racing to catch up with the future me, the future me that is already RVing. Yeah, strange, I know but sometimes it's rather hard to explain the things we are feeling sometimes and that is certainly the case with my feelings today.

More Tardy Blogging

I haven't blogged in awhile as not much has been happening as of late. The year of RVing is not quite working out in the way I was hoping it would however, the year is not over yet and RVing is still in my sights. As others have experienced, I am just hitting a few snags and delays here and there that I will work through and manage so that I get RVing early in the new year.

Edith and Eugene are on vacation to parts unknown. They decided to go last minute and I never learned of their vacation destination so I'll have to wait until they come back to find out where they went.

The RV is dry and waiting on me to remodel and repair her where necessary. I keep rejigging my plans but I think with each new idea comes a better plan so these delays are more of a benefit than a burden. It makes no sense to do poor work when I can always do it better and better only comes with good planning.

I'm not worried about getting into the RV as I know deep down RVing is where I belong.

A Bit of Maintenance and an Additional Tarp

I visited my RV last Friday to add another tarp, another layer of protection for the rear of the RV as the front is sealed quite well and has remained dry in spite of all the rain we get. I also washed a few areas around the side and corner trim and added a bead of caulking sealant to these areas as they are not remaining so dry with all of the rain we’ve been getting.

My RV is still my home and I still want to fix her up, change a few things inside and venture down the road with her. When she’s clean she looks darned good so I will work at washing more of her exterior through the fall and winter months as I sneak a day here and there to work on her.

I’ll likely have a few more opportunities later in the month as my co-worker is taking a few days off so I hope that work is quiet so I can give the RV my full attention. I hope to get the bedframe at least somewhere near started so I can quickly move on to refinishing the walls and decor in the bedroom area.

2011 is still the Year of RVing albeit maybe not in the sense I was hoping it to be. . .thanks for stopping by.

A Garage To Work In Sure Would Be Nice

David visited the RV last Friday and had a great experience apparently. He did a whole lot of nothing in and to the RV but he said that being in the RV was almost “magical”.

She started right up for him and he was eager to get to work on some remodelling but his “job” beckoned him to return to the office. So he spent ten or fifteen minutes in the RV before he reluctantly headed back to the office. He said that even though our little RV is battered and bruised some of it by his own hand he still loves the RV and feels right at home when he’s there.

He wishes we could just take off somewhere and do the repairs and remodels on the road but knows full well that doing so is almost an impossible task. The RV is full of supplies and has no room to spare for our stuff we need to take to live in an RV while on the road so it is for now a waiting game, a long waiting game where we need to find the time, weather permitting to do the repairs. A garage to work in sure would be nice.

Protection from the elements, warmth, electricity, and maybe even running water would surely speed up the repairs and remodel work we wish to do on the RV.

Taking So Long . . .

. . .but I’ll continue to be patient as we all are.

David has a plan and we’ll trust him to put his plan in place and get us into the RV in some sense before this year is through.

He bought a lot of stuff to remodel and repair the RV with so I guess that’s a good sign. She does need some work but not all that much and it’s not all that bad considering she’s 23 years old. Now she is in a little worse shape as David has started to remodel the rear living area that was I guess the sofa-bed and sort of the living room of the RV. This is becoming a bedroom and storage area with the storage underneath the bed. It’ll look good when it’s done and I guess my part of this will be the painting and wallpapering of the walls and bedframe.

Eugene will do his best to help where he can but much of the work does not really require two people and the RV is so small now that there are so many supplies in there that there’s hardly enough room for one person to move around in so two people would be tough to accommodate. But that’s all right with us as David is more than capable of handling this part of the project on his own.

We are in a kind of dilemma about what to do with the floor as we want to replace it with something fresh but not sure with what. we’ve seen a few flooring samples we like but do not feel like they quite fit with our design and decor elements. We’ve thought about painting the floor but are not sure how that’ll stand up over the long-term. But we need to decide on something the time to replace the floor is now as David has a few areas of the RV dismantled.

We’ll figure something out and we’ll just continue along as we have been for the past couple of years and hope for the best.

Thought I Didn’t Have Anything to Write About But

I do. This morning as I was getting dressed for some reason thought that I was putting on my RV Driving Shirt and was getting ready to hop into the driver’s seat of the RV and take on off down the highway.

I quite enjoyed the this thought and idea but as quickly as it came it disappeared and reality set in – just getting ready to go to work, I’m okay with this as I know that well soon enough I will indeed be getting dressed to drive my RV someplace or just getting dressed to enjoy my day working on my won stuff or going out the door to enjoy my ever changing backyard.

One thing I have decided about the shirt I’m wearing today is that it will in fact be my RV Driving Shirt along with the hat I’m also wearing, most likely along with these a pair of shorts or casual pants of some sort.

Well my day is still humming along and I’ll just enjoy it as it meanders along until another work comes to an end and is done for the day.

Moving Along at a Snail's Pace . . .

. . . and not much desire to blog about the slow progress of my repair and remodeling of the RV or of my preparations for moving into the RV one day, one day soon I hope!

I've picked up most of the supplies I need to remodel my RV on the inside and I have a plan in place and seemingly know what I need to do on the outside to get the RV ready for me and my desired life on the road.

Edith and Eugene remain cautiously optimistic that we are going to get out on the road this year and I guess I feeling pretty much the same.

I've come to some decisions that are not yet set in stone but are decisions that will put me into the RV sooner rather than later but will also put me in a position where I will be without any income unless I sell my crafts or find a new job after the work, my work is complete on the RV. Either way, I will most likely be working on the RV almost every day in October so I can travel with the RV this fall and winter even if its just in and around the metro Vancouver area.

Again, things are moving along but at snail's pace, that's all and blogging is always on my mind but I often, we often feel as if we have nothing to write about, at least for the time being.

    As we get into the summer months, the sunny dry weather we always remember having in the summer is not panning out this year. I’ve been to the RV a couple of times but never having or making enough time to do what I would like to when I’m there.
    Since I’m having a difficult time managing to get to do any sort of repairs to the RV in this sort of haphazard fashion I have decided that the time is right to abandon my job and get into the RV some time this fall. I’m thinking that I’ll retire at the end of September with the plan to repair and remodel the RV throughout early fall and then zip around Vancouver for awhile with the RV so I get comfortable driving the RV in a city environment then I’ll head off to parts unknown.
    My partner, family, and friends do not quite understand my desire to RV and offer little in terms of support or guidance so I’m on my own from that standpoint but I know I’ll have more than enough support from all of you RVers that are already out there willing to provide a helping hand should I need it. The blogs I read and the comments on those blogs are more than encouraging enough to pry me out of my comfort yet uncomfortable zone so I can start living my dreams.
    The skies may be gray but boy is the RVing lifestyle ever so bright with all of you great people out there making it all happen, proving to the rest of us that dreams do come true.

Edith and I are still surviving our stationary life here in the condo but we are traveling with our thoughts, conversations and magazines and books we read. David has a few RV magazines he subscribes to that come every month or every other month that keep us entertained and armchair traveling so not too bad being idle so far. He's also got a few RV related and other travel books that we are reading through too! And the blogs, so many RV blogs, way too many for us to try and read them all.

We're still planning and deciding and thinking about our lives in the RV and surprisingly our plans are not changing too much, we're still planning to visit the areas we've been planning to visit for the last year or two so our plans must be good ones.

We're all plugging away at our crafts and hobbies and doing our best to have fun with them and keep them small enough so we can all take our favourites on the road with us. So far so good on this front. We should get by within the weight constraints of the RV as well as take along everything else we need to bring with us. Besides the card-making business will allow the weight in the RV to go up and down as cards and supplies come and go with sales and making of new cards and David and Edith promise only to keep enough supplies on hand to make small batches of cards for sale instead of loading up with tons of stuff that will not get used immediately so that's a good thing.

Planning and planning, and planning but not going anywhere

Eugene and I are working hard at laying out our plans for the first leg of our RVing adventure while David goes about the maintenance and repairs on and to the RV. We're thinking about staying close to the lower mainland for the first while before venturing farther out to sort of get out feet wet, if you will. We may then head east into the south-eastern part of the province hitting places like Hope, Princeton, Osoyoos, Oliver, Cranbrook, and Nelson before turning south and heading into the US where our plan is to head to Arizona for the winter, boondocking in and around Quartzite where our only expenses will pretty much be food, fuel, and water.

These are our initial plans only and time will tell how far we get and where we get to as this adventure unfolds and unwinds and we find our place and comfort zones around this adventure of ours.

David is scheduling himself to work on the RV at the end of June and throughout July as time allows so we'll see how far he gets and what he finds as he goes about the maintenance and repairs. Hopefully, he doesn't get too impatient and leave without us as I know he is getting desperate to move into the RV these days as he finds it more of home than the condo. We agree, she sure is a comfy, little RV and we are almost as anxious to get traveling as is David

Stocking Up and Taking Stock

Good Day Everyone.

Eugene and I have been busy stocking up and taking stock of everything we think we need to take on our RVing adventure. David is hopefully, quite certain really that we'll be RVing sometime this year. Oh, how we hope this is to be. Eugene and I, although we like living in the condo and taking in the sights and sounds of Metro Vancouver have grown tired of this stationary life and are ready to get moving.

We think we've got our own selves ready to go, we've stocked up on a good selection of clothes for each of us, we've organized and pared down our respective hobbies, and we're both as healthy as ox so we're now just waiting to move into the RV.

Luckily, we know how to keep ourselves busy and we are not suffering from too much boredom other than just wanting to be moving somewhere, having new scenery around us every few days or so certainly would be nice.

More Ideas, Firmer Plans, and a Future Destination

A couple of days since my last post and last visit to the RV and in this time I’ve done a lot of thinking and daydreaming about the RV, repairs to the RV, and my RVing adventure.  I’ve made some I would say, somewhat firm decisions about how I will go about repairs to the RV and this will be through taking days off from work in order to accomplish the most in a single day or a group of days.

The next couple of tasks I have planned are to complete as much of the repairs to the bed-over-cab area and then tackle the rear passenger-side corner of the RV that will most likely take at least two or three days to tackle and complete.  Although, I have rough ideas as to how I will approach and do the repairs I know that I will need to be open to re-evaluating and changing those ideas to accommodate what actually needs to done if majorly different than where my thoughts are regarding this particular repair.

Once this area is complete I will give the RV a good wash and wax before tackling the resealing of the roof as although I do have plans to remove the rooftop air conditioner I will leave that alone for now as I may opt to use it if I’m in a hot climate and staying in an RV park or campground.  But if I find myself not using the air conditioner I will be removing it and fixing the gaping hole left behind somehow.  My initial thought is to install a skylight, any opinions?

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention is that I will apply new caulking to all of the seams and trim before giving the RV a good coat or two of wax.

Then it will be the start of a little “project” I plan to take on the road with me.  I want to get a bit ahead with this “project” so I will start it before heading out and heading out is what I plan to do this fall.  My destination for the fall and winter is Quartzite, Arizona as I will be able to pay next to nothing to boondock in the desert and that is a price I can live with.  During my stay I will blog, sell my handcrafted cards and other crafts, perform ventriloquism, and work on my “project”.

Finally Another Day at the RV

Sorry for the long delay between posts. No excuses to offer you and no excuse is really justified.

So stuff has happened but at the same time not so much.

How have I spent the last, what has it been, a month and a half?

Well, I've been doing a lot of thinking, planning, writing, editing, and rewriting my plans. I've never sat down and actually contemplated or even really thought about what specific repairs I had or wanted to do on the RV so that's exactly what I've been doing for the last month or so.

I drew up a plan of attack, read through it rewrote parts of it and then broke it down into a schedule, how many days for each repair or group of repairs, and then I printed it out read through it and did some more editing.

I was somewhat happy with what I had and took today off to see what really needed to be done as well as do something with an almost eight hour day that I planned to spend at the RV.

So, today, I took care of most of the leaky side of the bed-over-cab area but did not complete this task as I've decided to do something not planned but that will suit how I plan to use the RV a little better. The driver's side of the bed-over-cab area should no longer leak as I removed the damaged wood, put in a new piece of lumber, cleaned up the edges around the walls and roof, and then applied DiSeal Tape to all of the exposed edges doing my best to pull all of walls and roof together for a nice tight fit and seal. Time was running by too quickly and with the changes I want to make to the RV I temporarily re-installed the window as I have a specific remodel design in mind and will do that during my next visit. The window should be okay as I also applied Diseal Tape around the window opening itself. This area of the RV should now remain dry.

The tarp I used to cover the RV in an attempt to protect it from the rain is not doing such a great job of it. when I lifted the tarp, pools of water were sitting in some low lying areas of the roof, imagine my surprise and disappointment seeing that!

Well, that's it for now but I plan to be and should be less tardy in making further posts to the blog and that also goes for Edith and Eugene.

My RV Started on Monday

I had to do a pick up related to my day job and since the pick up location was more or less in line with where my RV is parked I decided to pay the RV a visit and fire her up. To my surprise she started up with just a little bit of encouragement. I let her run for a while as I turned on a few lights that allowed me to discover that the ceiling light in the galley is no longer working.

Stumped by this, I unfastened the fixture and checked the wiring and all seemed good but no light. I will need to hook it up to a meter to see if any power is going to the fixture.

After a few minutes I noticed that the RV was sounding a bit rough so a fresh tank of gas is probably in order and getting her mechanical systems checked over must also be a high priority.

On Monday night while I was at home after grabbing a snack I was returning something to the refrigerator but the refrigerator I saw was the one in my RV:

Well my next visit to my RV will hopefully be this coming Saturday and hopefully I can get some real work done toward fixing her leak (s)

Yes, Eugene, I’m going to get work on the RV and don’t you worry, you will be helping me!

Edith and I at Home in the Condo

While Edith and I make do living in stationary condo David has been off to visit the RV twice.
We’re trying our best to make the best of living in a condo with the same scenery out the window day-after-day.
I’ve basically spent the last couple of years just reading magazines and taking naps venturing out once in awhile to the RV with David and that’s about it. Edith too!
Edith has some work to show for her idleness as she is into crafts like David. She does spool-knitting and some Tarot work. As you can see from the photos below we manage to get by doing what makes us most happy while being in a stationary home.

I'm reading my favourite magazines RVTimes and Model Railroader.

We are quite anxious to get into the RV but will remain ever patient for David to get his butt in gear and get the RV ready for the road. David, I’m ready any time you are!

Rain, rain, rain and more rain

Today is another rainy day. Rain, rain, go away and don't come back for many days.

Eugene and I were planning to do some repairs to the roof but the rain has not really let up all day and here it is going on to 4 in the afternoon. We did visit the RV for about an hour. Started her up, with a boost from the "house" battery though. I guess the "starting" battery is probably shot. The "house" battery has a lot of juice. All the 12 volt components work very well and I even fired up the furnace again, got the RV quite warm and toasty.

I took a few more photos of the RV: the water heater, underneath the closet, underneath the sink, and behind the stove, and above the ceiling light fixture in the galley (can't see much, too small a hole stuffed with insulation and wires).

I especially enjoyed seeing the insulation in the attic space. For some reason even though I replaced that light fixture I could not, for the life of me remember what was in the attic space. The faint glimpse of picture I had in my mind was of seeing the underside of the aluminum roofing and nothing else. That attic insulation makes me very happy as it would appear that the RV is somewhat insulated. Yeah!!

I really did not feel like leaving the RV today but forced myself to as I have nothing inside of the RV to really make it a liveable space at the moment but otherwise man I was so at home in there it was just an unbelievably good feeling to have.

Dreams Foretelling the Future

I sure hope the dreams I’ve been having lately are a foretelling of the future as most of them involve the RV in one manner or another.

I’ve had several dreams about repairs and renovations to the RV and boy does she ever look good.

Another dream I had involved me driving the RV and as I’m driving I look over to the passenger seat and see Edith and Eugene sitting there contentedly watching the scenery go by, eyes wide open and big flashy smiles on their faces. How content we are to be in the RV at long last.

A few moments ago, I had the feeling that this has already happened and that I’m just catching up to the present-day activities of my life.

The weather is grey and wet but what a beautiful day it is. . .

I’m not sure when I wrote the stuff above this but I will keep it here as I do remember those dreams just not the particular nights when they occurred.

As Eugene mentioned in his last post, the RV is up and running again and having two batteries in her is a great start to getting her on the road.

Even though the forecast for this Friday is calling for showers/rain I still plan to pay a visit to the RV. Actually, if things work out on Thursday I may make a quick stop at the RV to take some measurements of the sole storage compartment to see if it will accommodate the portable generator I plan to buy on Friday. If the space is adequate that will be great as this will be for the generator only. Then the storage pod I intend to buy will be for my bike and other items that will survive in all weather conditions should the storage pod not be weather-tight.

I am feeling quite comfortable in the RV these days and consider her to be my true home. I do often fall asleep thinking I’m doing so in the comfort of my RV.

The other day I read somewhere about this couple that refurbished a 1984 Class C RV so I find myself not so alone and in the company of others who also own an older RV. I have an aunt and uncle who own what I believe to be a Class A RV from the early 70’s so I should not be ashamed or worried about the RV I own, not one bit! I like her and that is all that matters.

RV Up and Running Again

David and I went out the other day, last Friday, March 18th, and purchased a new house battery for the RV. It has some good cold cranking amps so we used it to boost the starting battery and fire up the RV. Took a little convincing before she sprung to life but when she got going she runs great, the RV that is!

It sure is nice to have a running RV again and with two good batteries to boot. Feels good to sit in the RV these days even if she is still parked in a storage lot. We even had the furnace running for a while. Furnace puts out some pretty good heat.

We cleaned up the area we are looking to repair but could go no further as we had no cutting tools or mats with us to cut the tape down to a size we could use. Along with that the rain was starting a few drops at a time, never amounted to much but we went home a little disappointed all the same.

Yesterday was to be another RV repair day but other things got in the way so now we are looking to April 1st before getting back to the RV. We’re feeling quite confident about our abilities so hopefully we don’t disappoint ourselves.

Another Dead Battery

Yup, David killed the battery. He left it connected for the past 6 months without starting the RV in that time and the battery is now defunct. The RV doesn't even turn over but the lights do come on. Whoopee!

David, David, David. . .but the good news is that the rain doesn't appear to be getting into the RV too much so at least a bit of good news for us on the RV front. I even checked the rear corners of the RV and although water has penetrated a bit in the past, what I see most is an awful lot of dust, dirt, and grime. This is particularly so underneath the bathroom counter as there is no paneling that separates the rear taillight assembly from the interior of the RV. We will have to come up with a fix for that so we can eliminate dust infiltration into this usually un-accessed area of the RV. We have quite the mess to clean up there as well. Lots and lots of dirt, dust, and grime.

I looked at the fresh water tank beneath the dinette bench and believe that we can quite easily remove the dinette and rotate the tank and relocate the water pump without much difficulty. So we do have a few projects to undertake but what fun we are having just planning to do all these things. Can't wait for us to get started.

Hopefully, the weather becomes dry and sunny so we can get out to the RV and start on everything before too long so we can get out in the RV to take advantage of the usually warm and dry summer months for some shakedown cruises in the RV before we venture out full time.

It's Cold Outside - at least for Vancouver It Is!

Well, winter is still showing it's face here on the south coast. Vancouver is hovering around the freezing mark and Victoria, situated on the southern tip of Vancouver Island was hit with snow. Victoria is usually the sunny and warm spot in Canada this time of year.

But even with this bit of a cold snap, how we long to be tucked away in our RV. As David mentioned the other day, he's planning to remodel the RV a little bit and this could involve turning the water tank 90 degrees so we will shall see what happens if anything does come of his remodeling ideas. It is a great plan and will certainly make the RV look larger than she is so Edith and I are all for it. But, our primary concern is repairing the water damage and making our cute, little RV watertight.

We continue to be patient and continue to plan our RVing adventure just to keep our minds active and our dreams of RVing alive so thanks again for stopping by and we'll talk to you all again, soon, we hope.

New Ideas - more remodeling of the rig

I've visited the RV a couple of times over the past couple of weeks and as I dream about RVing I've come up with a plan to remodel the rig so it offers me more usable space, if you will. Some things will come out but most will stay the same.

On the repairs front, water is still finding its way into the rig. I'm not sure where its coming from but a little bit of water has pooled in the bed-over-cab area and water has penetrated a little in the rear corner on the passenger side of the RV. Nothing too major but troublesome considering I threw a tarp over the rig a few months back.

No worries though, as I plan to take a few days off here and there to tackle these leaks the best I can as well as give the RV a quick wash and get the new battery recharged. I can't believe I left it connected. It has juice but just not enough to turn over the engine.

2011 certainly is the year of RVing.

Busy Times

What a busy time we have had, so busy not a thought was given to the blog and here it is three weeks after our last posting. Eugene and I have been busy scouring over "to-do" lists and sightseeing options once we get into the RV and David has been busy making his handcrafted greeting cards and other crafts as well as practicing his ventriloquism.

We made a quick visit to the RV the other day and discovered that the new battery David installed last summer does not have enough juice to start-up the RV so we need to get that take care pretty quickly. David thinks he might get out to that this Friday, I believe that is the 18th.

Eugene has also bee reading up on his favourite past-time and hobby as he wants to see if he can take it with us when we move into the RV full time. Lot's of thinking and measuring and weighing of things we need to take as well as the options we have before us.

Much has been happening and we continue to strive to keep up on top of this blog but as you can see we do not always get to it in a very timely manner so please keep us within arm's reach and we'll get into some exciting RVing adventures soon enough.

Speaking of RVing adventures, David managed to get out to the Early Bird RV Show and Sale out at the Tradex in Abbottsford. That was a couple of Thursdays ago, I guess. I believe he was there on the 3rd. He quite enjoyed himself and was able to catch a talk given by Rae of Travels with Miranda fame. He bought he RVing in Canada ebook while he was there.

He is hoping to also make it out to the Humdinger RV Show being held in Chilliwack from March 17-20th.
