Both Logan, who is 4 , and Scarlet, who is 3 , have been diagnosed with a rare terminal disorder called Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD). At this time the Aspholm family is looking into experimental clinical trials being done in Italy and Denmark, and a facility in Pittsburgh that focuses on children with rare disorders. There is no expertise on this disorder in Canada because of its rarity, and at this time there are no other cases of Late Infantile MLD in Alberta. The children’s Neurologist could not find another case in Edmonton’s historical database, which makes this disorder difficult to treat in Alberta.As there is currently no cure for this disorder, right now we are looking to buy the kids some time, and generally make their lives as kid-like as possible while they are still mobile. It is hard for Logan and Scarlet to play like other children. They cannot climb on a park, they have trouble walking on uneven surfaces (such as grass), and are not fast enough to keep up with other children their age in general. Logan is a very kind hearted boy, who loves life, and loves everyone around him. He is a quiet boy, but will always sit and talk if someone wants to listen.Scarlet is also a loving child, but on her own terms. She is wary of people she doesn’t know, but will eventually warm up to pretty much anyone. Once she gets comfortable she will talk your ear off, but good luck understanding any of it!The family is asking to raise awareness, and funds for this debilitating disorder. All support is greatly appreciated and all money raised will go straight to the kids, whether that means, funding treatment, providing mobility devices, or helping to relocate to a handicap accessible home allowing the kids more freedom, it is all important and will benefit Logan and Scarlet both in the short and long term. Hopefully with everyone’s help we can help find a cure. Ryan and Jody will never give up on these kids, and hope that you won’t either.
