More gimmicks and not nearly enough funding for our students. CA is 47th in the state in what we spend per pupil. CA has the highest student to teacher, student to counselor and student to administrator ratios -- in the nation. We've lost art, music, drama, counselors, school nurses, librarians, libraries, computer labs, after school programs, athletics. The past four years have been a bloodbath in staff and programs. It's time to actually fund our students in an amount that can cover what the state has set as their standards. Its time to invest in our students, rather than chip away at our schools, year after year after year. No more cuts. No more deferrals. No more gimmicks.

The governor is holding our students hostage, so he can pass a tax initiative that will not have a significant positive impact on our schools. That's pretty low if you ask me. Our schools, which get 40% of the budget, will absorb 90% of the cuts if the governor's initiative doesn't pass. This is what is called blackmail.

The PTA/Molly Munger initiative is the only initiative that will start to restore our schools. Many of our school districts are hanging by a thread and the governor's siphoning away more money last year due to his realignment plan, his initiative that only pays money that has already been taken from schools (maybe) and now his proposed Weighted Student Formula will further damage school districts that are already compromised. PTAs and educational foundations can not fill in the huge gap that has been created. Many districts don't even have the resources for PTA fundraising and educational foundations -- and so the gap widens even further for some -creating varying degrees of inequity, again - in an overall compromised system.

The PTA/Molly Munger, Our Children, Our Future initiative relies on a broad based, sliding scale tax, after deductions. It sends money directly to our schools, NOT the Sacramento black hole! It mandates parent input into how the money is spent and mandates strict accountability. The initiative also makes it a felony to misuse the funds. Got it Gov.? ourchildrenourfuture2012.com

As always it is the parents and teachers who must make education relevant to students. Technology must become nothing more than a tool. Where all can have access to hardware and applicationsif needed. On the one hand I bet using technology is not exactly learning - just as using a remote control does not teach you about television. You are the slaves to the technology; not the technologist.

IS YOUR STATE NEXT?

California has been hit a hard financial blow, because of its Liberal state capitol is genuflecting to the illegal alien invasion, carrying a cost of $16 billion dollars with no end in sight. California insists more money from taxes, as they are in serious trouble with their welfare issues, with Billions of dollars going towards illegal alien schooling, health care and the population of prison inmates. Immigration is the primary reason California has become the least-educated state considered in terms of the share of workers with less than a high school education. The state ranked 35th in terms of the share of its 19-year-olds who have graduated high school. The large share of California adults who have very little education are likely to necessitate welfare services and making it challenging for the state to create sufficient tax revenue, to encompass the demands for services made by its large unskilled population.

If no other law is passed by the Government, mandatory (E-verify H.R. 2885) needs to be the policy of this country? If E-Verify is enacted the mass exodus of millions of foreign nationals will begin, as they will be unable to find a job and it will discourage the annual influx of more foreigners into the country. Both political parties have done nothing about this unlawful epidemic, as the Democrats expect blocs of minority voters-Whether a citizen or not makes no difference to them. Republicans just want to exploit the cheap labor for their big corporate campaign contributors. POLITICS IS ABOUT MONEY, INFLUENCE AND POWER—NOTHING MORE? ITS JUST PLAIN UNADULTERATED GREED? Our country is so divided; brain washed by the left and illegal immigration has caused this massive spreading abyss. The agendas are so irreparable that the government has turned on its own people, as we have seen with Arizona, Alabama, Georgia, Utah, South Carolina and others waiting for court outcomes. Our nation has turned into a welfare state for foreign countries own populace.

Each year, according to the Edwin Rubenstein report, illegal aliens cost American taxpayers $346 billion across 15 federal agencies. (Source: www.TheSocialContract.com) That includes breakfasts and lunches for their children; it includes English as a Second Language. It includes free education from K-12. It means free and unconstrained medical care paid for by your billfold or purse. It means you pay for the insurance rates by unlicensed drivers. Illegal migrants and immigrants are worked at a third the wages and frequently, under the table. Not only do our kids not have jobs; you’re paying taxes for illegal aliens who are not paying taxes.

Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich With the $550 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for healthcare, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers exceeds $1.6 billion dollars a year, this doesn't cover the billions in education costs; and doesn't include the billions more in education. California, the epitome of a Sanctuary state will be the leader as millions of illegal aliens fleeing aliens arrive there, from less benevolent states? Unfortunately left wing Governor Jerry (moonbeam) Brown is now preaching more taxes, cuts in benefits—when removing the millions of foreign national could save the state. Not state, not county but a federal law that will stop this theft of American jobs. Unscrupulous employers need to be held accountable and harshly find and sentenced to prison. Rather than go into the details about the taxpayers ripped off, judge for yourself by going to NumbersUSA and American Patrol websites.

Also the most costly payout from taxpayers is the children that are slipped in by visitors from other countries or across our poorly enforced fence at the border that are eligible to become citizens, which promotes massive chain migration and enables parents to settle here. Over 400 thousand are estimated to take advantage of this misinterpreted law, again costing genuine Americans welfare programs. The birthright citizenship law must be amended, so only children with one citizen parent allows this right. Don’t remain blind to the profiteers in Washington and demand they enforce immigration laws. Because of this fiasco of our Immigration laws business owners are directly responsible for the growing amount of $113 Billion dollars in public welfare programs.

Another piece of mind boggling information is Americans pay $27 billion to provide forms, ballots, interpreters and brochures for languages annually.

According to the Heritage Foundation if Democrats get their way, we would be adding a further 2.6 Trillion dollars to the already accelerating 15.6 Trillion dollars if an amnesty is imposed. Both political parties are responsible for this parasitic invasion, which is catering to any of the 20 million plus illegal aliens already here. Even while they are stealing us blind of our own impoverished, our own sick and homeless, they are stealing another $4.2 billion dollars from taxpayers through the incompetence of the IRS, who would audit American for exaggerating on the business car mileage. Even illogical to this is that illegal aliens are allowed to wire out of America annually over $40 billion dollars to foreign banks not being absorbed back into the economy. Our country has been neglected for years, occupied by illegal immigrants and hordes of criminals. Mitt Romney better not turn on the massive TEA PARTY on this issue, or they will realize he cannot be trusted. Americans haven’t learned that you cannot get something for nothing. Half of this country’s population, live off the other half’s income and that is why our social safety nets are failing. The last realistic chance we have of getting out of our financial mess is to remove the old members of Congress and state capitals, with Tea Party leaders. It happened in Indiana when Senator Richard Lugar was retired, replaced by a Tea Party lawmaker.

Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich With the $550 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for healthcare, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers exceeds $1.6 billion dollars a year, this doesn’t cover the billions in education costs; and doesn’t include the billions more in education.

I find it interesting that Mr. Torlakson would describe California as a model for leadership in education. California has not earned the the right to arrogantly call ourselves leaders in education when we know full well that among all of the states of our nation we are wallowing in the muck of the bottom of the barrel in terms of how much we spend on students per year. Leaders don't wallow, they rise. Not that California is to be rebuked for it's standing. It's almost impossible for any state to successfully work within the design of the American public education system. Our system is deathly ill, suffering from a degenerative disease that has gone untreated for far too long. Interestingly, the approach to addressing the many needs of our American education system is very similar to the way our country approaches the nationwide epidemic of obesity. Rather than treat or eradicate the cause of the problem, Americans seem to insist on their devotion to treating the symptoms. If California truly wants to be considered a forerunner in education it should start at the beginning by working towards better teacher preparation and development. We can assess all we want in every different configuration you can imagine but, if we continue to fill our ranks with ill-prepared teachers who are not equipped to positively impact student learning then we will continue to see desperately disappointing results in student performance. We need to stop treating the symptoms associated with the disease of a broken system and begin to heal from the inside out. Want to be a leader, California? I dare you.

Tonya,

My son is currently in kindergarden and it is nothing like the kindergarden we went to. The are reading, writing and math. They have homework that they are required to do. So an extra year is not rolling around on a matt or just playing with shapes.

My son will turn 5 on December 17th, I don't think that it is fair the just because he was born after December 2nd that he does not have the opportunity to have an additional year of learning. My older son is currently in Kindergarden and my yonger son can do most of my older sons work. He is ready for the transitional kindergarden but can not attend because of 2 weeks.

I'm not sure how fair it is to offer an additional year of school to such a small group of children and their parents.

First, leadership defined by position (first, in front of, behind) may not be an argument CA should present to earn a customized waiver from Arne. In relationship to other states, CA educators have much to learn, to embrace and to reflect in reshaping our entire educational system, not just a focus on our accountability system. I “hear” the excitement and determination to request a modified waiver to better meet the needs and goals that were outlined by the group. Yes, we should be proud of our bold and successful CA initiatives around standards for students, CSTP standards and TPAs, which serve as models for other states, but we have a “habit” of sounding arrogant and resistant to “disruptive innovations” that present wrinkles and waves in “our” designs and operations. I agree with many of the excellent points that represent rationale to request a modification, as outlined by many stakeholders who gathered to develop the letter. The timelines don’t have to be obstacles, but should guide us to think critically to prioritize efforts and fiscal resources in order to move toward the real goal of the wavier for ESEA: Bottom line, collectively, we are obligated to demonstrate evidence that every child learns, every day every year. Are we so sure that our current standards, assessments, credentialing processes and professional development pathways and evaluation measures reveal and result in highly effective teachers, leaders and students who are prepared for college? Less resistance and greater inquiry into new ways to collaborate with a range of stakeholders, across states might offer welcomed opportunities to implement more relevant, flexible, coherent systems that support more rapid responses and solutions to the needs of our CA students. We’re all learning anytime and everywhere and therefore students, policy makers, teachers, administrators, higher educators, families, community members, ed organizations and associations have equal access to information and knowledge. We are becoming more informed, inspired and empowered to innovate, with or without waivers in place… CA is a participant in the CCSSO –SCEE state consortium work that aims to unite states in collaborative efforts to share resources, models, designs, data, in very transparent ways. Maybe CAs Theory of Action plan should be in alignment with the wavier—to demonstrate our forward thinking for the purpose of demonstrating our commitment to students. Our most accomplished teachers are the ones who are really out in front… Ignoring labels, budget cuts, policies, and focusing on meeting the needs of individual kids; collaborating with colleagues, studying content, selecting aligned resources and assessing progress to advance their students’ learning, each and every day. So many CA teachers are already implementing the Common Core... Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to add some of these reflections in the request. CA

Will the expansion of California-based charter schools outside the state come at the expense of their growth inside the state? It's not easy to find a answer to this question. The expense will not be the same of course. There are other important reasons at calculating the expense.

As the communications director for the Achievement School District in TN, for which Aspire has applied to join, we are thrilled that one of the top-performing charter management organizations in the country has made a bold statement to serve students regardless of location.
