The June 2010 issue has the general theme of "principles and practices" and the September issue features articles related to "materials and activities" and includes contributions from Brian Tomlinson, Lucy Cooker and Richard Pemberton.

The editorial team is now accepting submissions for upcoming issues. The December issue will have the theme "motivation and beliefs" and the March 2011 issue is related to "skills development and practice".

Feel free to send other self-access related articles for consideration in future themed or general issues. We are particularly interested in receiving reviews,
summaries and reports. The changes are fairly minor, however, you'll still want to know what it means for your students?

Here is your opportunity to get FCE exam tips from Fiona Joseph and Peter Travis the Founding Managers of Flo-Joe (shortlisted for the British Council ELTON Award 2007 and Winner of the British Council ELTON Award 2003)

Essentially, the key differences in the updated Cambridge FCE exam are:

1. There are three parts instead of four. One of the two current multiple-matching tasks has been removed.

2. The number of questions has been reduced from approximately 35 to 30.

3. The time allowed is reduced from 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour.

4. There is a fixed number of items for each part and therefore for the whole of the Reading paper.

5. In the gapped text (now Part 2), only sentences, not paragraphs or sentences, will be removed from the text.

6. The multiple choice (now Part 1) has a wider test focus.

What reading skills are being assessed? The same reading skills as before:

Part 1: detail, opinion, gist, attitiude, meaning, tone, purpose and main ideas.
Part 2: text organisation (how language achieves cohesion and coherence)
Part 3: specific information, detail, opinion and attitude.

Tips for candidate preparation:

Not surprisingly, we're going to say that students need to read, read, read! As well as texts from coursebooks try to encourage reading outside the classroom. Students may appreciate time in class to share opinions on an English language story they've enjoyed, or a newspaper article.

For candidates, consider the set text option. The Updated FCE Writing Paper will give candidates an option to answer a question based on the reading of two set texts. ('Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens and 'The Phantom of the Opera' by Gaston Leroux' are the novels for 2008-2009.)

If your students want to tackle this question they must have read at least one of the books in advance, and it's advisable to study the book as a class. Other texts that are suitable are English-language newspapers, magazines, articles, reports and literature.

For additional information go to the Flo-Joe FCE Exam Guide:
http://www.flo-joe.co.uk/fceexamguide.htm

*******
Blog URL: http://education-articles-blogs-websites.blogspot.com/

Introducing English Online

English Online is specially designed for learners of English.

The articles are carefully chosen and rewritten, so that they can be more easily understood. Top 10 Tips

Public speaking should not scare you to death, but the truth is, it is the number one fear for many people.

Personally, after watching the movie Jaws when I was a kid, I can't think of anything worse than being chewed up by a shark! However, it is important to recognize than the anxiety caused when we have to speak in front of others can be overcome.

Hiring a Communication Coach can help you deal with this properly, so you can enjoy your public speaking, whether for business or social functions.

For now, here are a few golden tips that you should keep in mind.

1 – Expect nervousness every time, but don’t expect disaster. Expect success.

2 – Stick to what you know well, so you can ‘talk’ about it at length, with ease.

3 – Ask lots of questions of the event organizer ahead of time, to find out the size of the room, equipment, expected number of attendees, etc. Visit if possible.

4 – Talk to people in the audience before you speak. If you have a chance to meet some of them before the speaking date, or at least before your talk try to mingle a bit and find out what they expect. It is good to have a few allies in the audience, and it is great for you to know what they expect to hear.

5 – Reduce ‘separation anxiety’ by reframing the speech as an ‘informative conversation’ within a group. Talk to them, not at them.

6 – Prepare point-form notes or cards and practice a lot with family, friends, etc. No sentences. The less you read the better. Add pictures to your notes.

7 – Remind yourself during to slowdown, pause, breathe, relax and smile. Actually write those words in the top right-hand corner of your notes on different pages.

8 – Research as much as you can ahead of time, so you can be THE up to date expert on the subject of what you are talking about. Anticipate questions and have good answers.

9 – Always relate directly to your audience. It is not about you, but them. Making your speech relevant to your audience and their world is key to their enjoyment and interest.

10 – What is the overall focus? Is it to inform, to entertain, to motivate, to shock your audience? Your whole speech needs to be centred around this vision.

BONUS # 11 – To become a good public speaker and presenter, you simply must do a lot of speeches or presentations, long or short, in your personal or professional life. Tips and techniques help, but there is no real shortcut.

Author: Ric Phillips
You can sign up for Ric's "3V Communications Newsletter"
Go to: http://www.communicationcoach.ca

*****
Education Articles Blogs Websites Blog Url
http://education-articles-blogs-websites.blogspot.com/

Learn English FREE with Twitter

Learn English FREE with Twitter

Twitter is a free micro-blogging service.

You can set up a free profile and follow others.

You can ask questions and get answers.

You can follow several different updates

Here are four Twitterers you can follow to Study English

Link to ESL in Canada News Updates on TwitterEverything about Study English in Canada for students and teachers

Once you find employment your first responsibility will always be to your new employer. As an employee of the boatyard, you will be responsible for getting your work done on time and to company standards.

Once you have been employed for a minimum of three months, a representative from the NSBA Training Department and the NS Department of Labour and Workforce Development - Apprenticeship Training & Skills Development Division will be registering you as an Apprentice.

During these initial visits, the apprenticeship program will be explained to you and you will receive a NS Boat Builder Apprenticeship Logbook. Each Logbook contains the Certification Pathways Assessment Results Sheets and Evidence of Competency Sheets.

For each unit outlined in the pathways, there is a workbook. You will be required to purchase these workbooks at a cost of $45 plus GST each. You will use the Evidence of Competency sheets to record your progress of learning for each skill set. Each time you feel that you're learning a new skill, and can perform this task competently and consistently, ask your Mentor to check your work. If he or she is satisfied, they will record this in your Logbook.

A representative from the NSBA Training Department will visit you and all the other Apprentices quarterly to review your progress. It is up to YOU, the Apprentice, to track your progress and learn new skills. The Registered Mentors are there to help train you, and the Training Coordinator is there to offer support, but it is YOUR responsibility to keep track of your progress - and learn new skills.

If you are interested in receiving your Nova Scotia Boat Builder Certificate of Qualification and becoming a Certified Journeyperson, please contact either Chip Dickison or Chantel at 902-423-2378 for more information.

Jobs in Canada BLOG URL
http://jobs-across-canada.blogspot.com/

**********

Education Articles Blogs Websites BLOG URL
http://education-articles-blogs-websites.blogspot.com/

Introducing the Speak English Better Blog

Introducing the Speak English Better Blog

I hope this blog is exactly what you are looking for. By the way have you ever heard of the sex trade or human trafficing. There are rumours that some are selling fake Canadian University degrees and some are fronts for money laundering. We get complaints about the small petty criminals that just do not pay their Canadian teachers, their Canadian homestay fees, do not pay Canadian taxes etc. etc..

What is even worse is that many students have their registration and tuition money stolen before they even get to Canada. Many students that get to Canada and are ripped off do not complain because they do not speak English, are afraid of the police and they have been threatened by the criminals.

The BC politicians know that the international ESL student complaints are like the iceberg with 95% of them hidden and never seen. It really looks like the BC politicians have done nothing to help the international ESL students because they are not BC voters and after they had their money stolen they do not have money. When have you ever seen a BC politician help someone that is not a voter and has no money?

Read some more from the Vancouver Sun ....

To subscribe
ESL in Canada News Blog Atom Feed
http://eslincanada.blogspot.com/atom.xml

***********

Education Articles Blogs Websites Blog URL
http://education-articles-blogs-websites.blogspot.com/

Links to our favourite websites:

Link to ESL in Canada Directory of ESL English tutors, teachers, classes, lessons, Business English, Canada universities, colleges, schools, Canadian ESL English as a second language schools, programs, instructors, free ESL English lessons, homestay, education coaching, consulting services, student resources, information and advice across Canada, North America

Link to TLC Travel Language Culture Network language exchanges, travel, immigration, employment, shopping, homestay and professional services

Link to Sentence Master English Writing Game that helps students improve English grammar, English vocabulary, writing phrases, clauses and complete English sentences.

Introducing the How 2 Retire Early Blog

How 2 retire Early

The How 2 Retire Early blog will provide the results of our life experiences, work explorations and discoveries, compare and contrast our investment results, provide saving tips, retirement comments, opinions, observations and useful suggestions.

The Welcome Letter:

Early retirement is a hot button for the vast majority of working adults.

The concept of not working is pure fantasy for working adults slugging out a salary in the harsh pits of employment. Working with stress, demeaning behaviours, unhealthy dangerous or physically punishing jobs will motivate all sane people to try to leave early.

For those who love their job, get up early and work late, are constantly rewarded and appreciated for their contributions and efforts, the concept of early retirement never enters their thinking.

Standard saving and planning for early retirement as promoted by the banks, insurance companies, investment managers, pension trustees and retirement planners all seems to be the same. You do without part of your money for forty years and trust that there is something left for you at age 55, 60 or 65. (Just ask the retirees who had to get their money in 1978, 1987, 2001, or 2008 what they think)

Just ask many who are retiring early what they will do? Their answers will surprise you. Usually they are even more busy than when they are working. Early retirement is just a job change for these individuals.

To me renovating the house, building a cottage, putting in a greenhouse garden, completing a university degree or writing a book is starting a new job.

To me leaving work because of injury, accident, heart attack, stroke, dementia, cancer, a host of other work ending events, damages or conditions this is not really early retirement it is convalescence and recovery.

To me the statement "How to retire early" has to be expanded or changed into something like early retirement lifestyle changes or something like early retirement leisure and income activities.

We have lots of time to explore the early retirement concepts and procedures.

Come back often.

***********

Education Articles Blogs Websites Blog URL
http://education-articles-blogs-websites.blogspot.com/

Links to our favourite websites:

Link to ESL in Canada Directory of ESL English tutors, teachers, classes, lessons, Business English, Canada universities, colleges, schools, Canadian ESL English as a second language schools, programs, instructors, free ESL English lessons, homestay, education coaching, consulting services, student resources, information and advice across Canada, North America

Link to TLC Travel Language Culture Network language exchanges, travel, immigration, employment, shopping, homestay and professional services

Link to Sentence Master English Writing Game that helps students improve English grammar, English vocabulary, writing phrases, clauses and complete English sentences.

Welcome to the Education Articles Blogs Websites Blog

Welcome to the Education Articles Blogs Websites Blog

Posts will include student, teacher, parent and school resources.

We will post complete articles when possible. Again the wife speeds up, to 80 mph.

The husband starts to press his luck: "I want the car, too." The wife still quiet just drives faster and faster. By now she's up to ninety mph.

Frustrated by the silence he says "All right, I want the bank accounts, and all the credit cards, too."

The wife slowly starts to veer toward a bridge.

This makes the husband a bit nervous, so he says, "Isn't there anything you want?"

The wife says, "No, I've got everything I need."

"Oh, really," he says, "so what have you got?"

Right before they slam into the bridge at a 100 mph, the wife smiles and says,

"The airbag"

**********

The Education Blogs in Canada Blog URL
http://blogs-in-canada.blogspot.com/

Links to our favourite websites:

ESL in Canada Directory
Directory of ESL English schools teachers tutors classes lessons university colleges high schools, Canadian ESL English as a second language study programs, education coaching, consulting services, resources, homestay, visas, study information and advice across Canada, North America

The Travel Language Culture Network organizes special member group prices, special events and activities to help provide visitors with both fun and educational programs. Evidence based treatment, education and residential care by properly trained service providers are required to help the 1 in 150 persons who have an autism spectrum disorder.

Recent Post:

Fomer NIH Head Says Question of Whether Vaccines Cause Autism Has Not Been Answered

Dr. Bernadine Healy, former head of the US National Institutes of Health, has claimed in an interview with CBS News that the question of whether there is a causal connection between vaccines and autism has not yet been answered. There is not yet enough evidence to say that there is no causal connection.

Dr . Healy notes that there have been no major studies of autistic children who developed autistic symptoms shortly after vaccination to see if there is such a connection. Animal Lab tests on mice and primates showing concerns about mercury and vaccine preservatives have been disregarded. Population studies do not test causation the indicate associations. Controlled lab studies are required. Dr. Healy also indicates that an Institute of Medicine (IOM) report in 2004 discouraged investigation of a possible link between susceptibility groups, autism and vaccines. Dr. Healy claims that the IOM report expressed a concern that pursuing the vaccine autism hypothesis would scare the public.

"I think that the public health officials have been too quick to dismiss the hypothesis as irrational," Healy said.

Go to the Facing Autism in New Brunswick Blog
http://autisminnb.blogspot.com/

*****

How to Add RSS to MyYahoo

(for the older MyYahoo version- New version is easier)

Go to the yahoo sign in page and log in.

1. The thought should include 1. a subject, and 2. an action or state of being.

Lets describe the different available subjects to be used in our example sentence.

You can use yourself as the subject of your sentence. You can use your brothers or sisters or any or all of your family members as the subject of your sentence. You can use neighbors, friends, people you know, even people you do not know as the subject of your sentence. In fact you can use anybody (living or dead) as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use your pet dog or goldfish as the subject of your sentence. You can use any (living or dead) insect, bird, mammal, reptile, fish, bacteria or any creature as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use your new toy, Sentence Master Game, computer software, hybrid car, house, office or space pen as the subject of your sentence. You can use any naturally constructed or man made items or objects as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use another person's new car, laptop computer, motorcycle or funny tie as the subject of your sentence. You can use any other person's naturally constructed or man made items or objects as the subject of your sentence.

Maybe you want to use your pet dog's possessions as the subject of your sentence. You can use any (living or dead) insect, bird, mammal, reptile, fish, bacteria or any creature's possessions or objects as the subject of your sentence.

You may want to use your actions as your subject of your sentence. You can use swimming or running as subjects for your sentence. Almost all visible actions can be sentence subjects.

You may want to use another person's actions as the subject of your sentence. Almost all visible actions performed by another can be sentence subjects.

You may want to use a natural process or an animal's or machines' actions as the subject of your sentence. Almost all visible actions performed by mother nature, all creatures and machines can be used as sentence subjects.

You may want to use invisible actions as your subject of your sentence. These invisible actions are also described as intangible actions. You can use your thinking or dreaming or wondering as intangible actions as subject of your sentence.

You may want to use another person's invisible or intangible actions as the subject of your sentence. You can use another person's daydreaming or fantasizing as intangible actions as subject of your sentence.

You may use your state of being as the subject of your sentence. Richard makes grammar fun — which of course it is! He also answers grammar questions on the Grammar Q&A forum, along with Rachel Spack Koch. Richard teaches English to adults at Lindsey Hopkins Technical Education Center, part of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, and has authored a number of grammar texts for teachers and students.

The initial posts: Thursday, January 17, 2008

Welcome to My Blog!

Glad you’ve come to visit my blog! I’d like to consider this my cyber-living room, so to speak, where we can have good chats to exchange ideas about any and all aspects of the English language: where it's been, where it is now, and where it's headed.

Some entries on the Grammar Guy Blog

May I Have a Word?

In his book Crazy English*, author Richard Lederer goes into some of the odder oddities of English. He pointed out something that has always stuck with me: “Why do we park in a driveway and drive on a parkway?” Yep, it’s funny, so we chuckle at the cleverness of his question and maybe grin sheepishly, but at the same time, I, for one, feel uncomfortable because I know I can’t answer the question right then and there. We’ll probably find the answer if we dig into the etymology of both words, but to come up with an answer on the spot? Yipes! Anyway, the point is that English vocabulary is always ambushing us like this. Hasn’t it done that to you?

Most recent post - Friday, April 18, 2008

We’re All Entitled

I’ve always found our most common titles in English quite amazing. Paper-based test (PBT)Toefl Tests are administered only a few times each year.

The PBT tests the same English skills as the CBT with some differences. The number of questions is higher in the PBT and the score scales.

The PBT Toefl test lasts 4 hours. Students can take the test as many times as they wish. However, colleges and universities usually consider only the most recent score.

Listening (30-40 minutes) It consists of three parts.

The first one contains 30 questions about short conversations.

The second part has 8 questions about longer conversations.

The last part asks 12 questions about lectures or talks.

Structure and Written Expression (25 minutes)

This part has 15 exercises of completing sentences correctly and 25 exercises of identifying errors.

Reading Comprehension (55 minutes)

It has 50 questions about reading passages.

Writing (30 minutes)

One essay with 250-300 words in average.

The final PBT score ranges between 310 and 677 and is based on three subscores:

Listening (31–68), Structure (31–68), and Reading (31–67).

Unlike the CBT, the score of the Writing section (referred to as the Test of Written English, TWE) is not part of the final score; instead, it is reported separately on a scale of 0–6.

The score test takers receive on the Listening, Structure and Reading parts of the TOEFL test is not the percentage of correct answers.

The score is converted to take into account the fact that some tests are more difficult than others. The converted scores correct these differences. It is part of my job to help ESL (English as a Second Language) students, immigrants, overseas company executives and managers etc. improve their overall ability to speak English with native speakers like myself.

This allows them to feel more at ease, gain more confidence in interviews and at the office, develop friendships and professional relationships quickly and also integrate faster in their new city.

for additional info....

Speak English Better Blog URL
http://speakenglishbetter.blogspot.com/

Speak English Better Blog Feed
http://speakenglishbetter.blogspot.com/atom.xml

**********

Education Articles Blogs Websites BLOG URL
http://education-articles-blogs-websites.blogspot.com/

Links to our favourite websites:

Link to ESL in Canada Directory of ESL English tutors, teachers, classes, lessons, Business English, Canada universities, colleges, schools, Canadian ESL English as a second language schools, programs, instructors, free ESL English lessons, homestay, education coaching, consulting services, student resources, information and advice across Canada, North America

Link to TLC Travel Language Culture Network language exchanges, travel, immigration, employment, shopping, homestay and professional services

Link to Sentence Master English Writing Game that helps students improve English grammar, English vocabulary, writing phrases, clauses and complete English sentences.

University in USA Blog

University in USA

There over 6000 universities in the USA.
